I came here with a Groupon, but I'm really surprised this restaurant was even registered with Groupon as it seemed pretty popular. It doesn't appear much from the outside, but when you step it, the interior is quite sleek. There is also a bar at the back of the restaurant for drinks.
I ordered the Pork belly with Ginger and garlic and my boyfriend ordered the teriyaki chicken dish. Each came with 3 side dishes: an egg, seasoned peas and pickles. It was definitely a huge meal! The pork was slightly hard to chew, but overall, the flavour was amazing (the teriyaki chicken was definitely a winner!)
This place is a must-go, especially with the Groupon. It's also in a super convenient location in Yaletown, so I'd absolutely recommend trying it out!!
I have tried Sushi Bella which is a decent sushi joint operated by the same owners so naturally I had to check out their latest establishment: Bistro Hatzu. We were a group of 4 and had the following: spicy chunky sashimi, ebi mayo, chicken karaage, I got lazy roll, rib eye steak roll, hot stone bowl and lastly steaky don. All were excellent taste and presentation wise. Portions are decent. Servers were attentive and friendly. As far as the style of the cuisine goes, its not traditional in the slightest so if you're an aficionado of traditional Japanese cuisine this place might let you down. However, if you just love reasonably priced delicious food you will enjoy Bistro Hatzu. Would I go back? Definitely.
Today I was invited to “Hatzu” for a media tasting like no other. I was the plus one to Jacqueline of @porkninja fame, and we were two of a panel of over 15 people invited to give invaluable feedback to the restaurant, in the form of a tasting panel. Our resulting feedback would be used to determine their newest menu, set to launch in the upcoming week.
I enjoyed the food here a lot. The sushi is a bit on the pricy side but that's ok. I ordered the Hatzu crunch tower and oh boy it was absolutely delicious! (and instagram worthy) Service was good for the most part but the waitresses kept coming up to us like every 5 minutes to see if everything is ok lol. Definitely recommended if you're looking for a good sushi place in the west end.
Japanese Bistro Hatzu is located on Davie Street Vancouver, which is across the street from the Greek Food Restaurant. We’ve been to this restaurant only once by accident. We actually planned to have a Greek Food, but there were so many people waiting outside the restaurant. In this way, we decided to find some other restaurant nearby. Japanese Bistro Hatzu is a few minutes walking and across the street, so we decided to go there. We arrived the restaurant right during the dinner time. The restaurant was busy. After a few minutes waiting, we got a table and server let us move in. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice and clean. All the servers were really nice and friendly. They all wear the uniform. When they saw you confused about the menu, some of them would come to you to help. We ordered Sashimi Don, Beef Teriyaki, and Tofu Teriyaki. The food came fast Sashimi was really fresh. Beef and Tofu Teriyaki were well cooked and tasted great.
We actually weren't planning to come here, but the restaurant we wanted to try was closed and this was close by. When we got there, most of the tables were filled and there was only space at the bar. But a few minutes later, a table opened up and the server offered to let us move, which was nice. Service overall was really good.
We tried the salmon battera, beef udon, and the ocean albacore roll. The size of the battera was quite large. I think there was too much rice with this one. But their flavours were pretty good and slightly different from other oshi sushi I've had. The beef udon was a good size and there was lots of beef. Only thing was the beef was still kind of clumped together into one piece. The ocean albacore roll was OK. I thought the sauce was a bit too overpowering.
Overall the food was good, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back. Some of the things on the menu are a bit pricier than other places for similar items as well.
Hatzu towers are strangely amazing .. they also happen to be their specialty. It might less in quantity but they filling . All the food is good . The service and place is also comfortable .
Small restaurant on Davie. It is more a fusion style of Japanese restaurant than a traditional one.
We ordered some rolls and some deep fried items, all pretty tasty.

I scanned the menu for things that looked like they would replenish my energy, and dancing shrimp seemed like a good option. The shrimp were meaty with a snap, and the truffle oil, balsamic reduction, and basil pesto blended well together. The creamy, savoury flavour of the shrimp was topped with a nice helping of bubbly masago
Sushi Bella is one of my go-to Japanese restaurant in downtown Vancouver and Kits area. This location is tucked away in the heart of Davie Street in the West End of Vancouver, Sushi Bella might go unnoticed amongst the raft of other restaurants that surround it, but once you try, I am sure it will be one of your go-to as well!
One-liner: A huge sushi menu with some creative and new ideas
Highlight: Volcano Tower
Recommended for: Sushi cravings that lean towards the creative side of maki
Would I go back? Yes.
Check out my blog post for the full review!
Previously Sushi Bella. Same owner, he just decided to open up this Bistro in the same spot. I really like Sushi Bella, this place was even better. The service here was behind superb. Sushi is very high quality and the presentation is great. I love all the creative fusion style items and countless dishes to try here. I had the volcano tower and belly to belly role. Finger licking good!
Formerly housing the popular Sushi Bella franchise on Davie Street, Japanese Bistro Hatzu is now rebranded name, opening its doors last month. Although both are Japanese restaurants but that’s where the similarities end. Hatzu is more bistro and casual style japanese dining experience with a modern but chic decor. The word ‘Hatzu’ in japanese means the first or first-born. The owners said the name reminds them of their reasoning behind opening the restaurant in the first place.
Sushi Bella is one of my go-to Japanese restaurant in downtown Vancouver and Kits area. This location is tucked away at the heart of Davie Street in the West End of Vancouver, Sushi Bella might go unnoticed amongst the raft of other restaurants that surround it. Bella Tower ($12) Fresh salmon & tuna tartar, avocado, crab mix, wasabi mayo & pesto. Really good with a hint of pesto on the side, though the combination of flavours sounds off it does really work!
Interesting rolls, beautiful, tasty, and unique. There are better sushi places in Vancouver, but they differentiate themselves with their creative rolls.
Atmosphere 1/1
Clean, modern, they have a sushi bar meets spa type of look going for them. The walls are azur in colour and it's a gem of a spot on Davie street
Service 0.5/1
Their service is a hit and miss - some days the server is very on top of things and some days you have to chase them down for water/tea, to order, and to get the bill. The servers are friendly though
Food 1/1
It's Korean sushi, and it's done very well! I love their playing, their portion size is perfect, and their fish always perfect. No overly frozen tuna here. I especially like their nigiri and their Asian dream salad (colourful and delicious). Their lunch combinations are always a good deal too
Price 1/1
Worth it. Medium towards higher cost for sushi but not ridiculous
Personal opinion 1/1
I often choose to come here for lunch as it's quiet and relaxing, it's a classy spot on Davie amidst all the busy family styled restaurants. The food is always good quality

+4.5
Great place, and they offer Gluten free rolls, soya sauce etc.
Most memorable was the Grouse Mountain Roll, and a dish called Bella.
So good!
Love this place! Great serv.... Love this place!
Great service, consistently high quality sushi and a lovely space. Ocean Dream roll is my favorite of the specialty rolls, but the menu offers all sorts of fun and creative variations as well as classics. A bit more expensive than other Davie sushi offerings, but well worth it for the quality of food, atmosphere and service
Very good. Starting to like this little chain. Trendy modern decor makes you think you're eating at a much more expensive restaurant. the menu is packed with good all the good choices you would expect in a fully stocked japanese restaurant as well. The Tuna Tataki was very good, loved the citrus in the ponzu sauce, it was seared perfectly. The paradise roll which consisted of wild salmon topped with mango salsa, alfalfa sprouts and ginger strands was good too (but for $8 there should be more salmon in it). The pork belly Kimchi was very good too. Solid spot.
Good Sushi with a nice atmosphere and great Service .... Went out late this Sunday night looking for Sushi and stumbled upon Sushi Bella on Davie as we were seeking shelter from the rain. The Service was great and attentive to our needs, as she noticed how much we both love the Ginger and she brought extra over a few times during the meal. The Green Tea was delicious and the starter Seafood Salad was a fresh and tasty sharing plate. We were more into Sashimi than Rolls tonite and were able to make a comparable substitute of the Mackerel on the Sashimi Platter ... That was great as we both do not like that particular fish. Enjoyed the evening, the food, and the Service. Will go back as they seemed to have some interesting quasi-Sushi type dishes I might like to try!
Not my favorite, but still like it. Heard from many friends that this Japanese restaurant was very good, I've decided to give it a try this afternoon.
Made an ordered of salmon sashimi, assorted tempura, original sushi pizza, and paradise roll. Everything was good except the paradise roll - the salmon was quite fishy, plus, really don't like the mango salsa - too artificially sweet, not too much mango taste.
Service was good. The 2 waitresses were very attentive and pleasant. Will go and try other stuff next time.
Always Fresh - Spot on! YUMMY
Nice, trendy atmosphere. Beautiful presentation, great service. the torched sushi was cool. for regular meals, i would still go to samurai down the street for the yummy big portions, but with out of town guests who want a beautiful setting/trendy ambience, i would go to BELLA instead.
We went here because of Urban Spoon, and because it is right across from our hotel! The food--amazing! Service--great! We would definitely eat here again, possibly even on this same trip. We are used to all you can eat places where we're from. Where you leave uncomfortable and pay a decent chunk of change for okay sushi. We left Bella full and satisfied with great quality food, and paid less than we would at an all you can eat. Highly recommended!
Best!. I try to come to Vancouver while on vacation every year with my partner, and we decided to try Sushi Bella at the Davie street location out based on the reviews we read online. I must say, am I ever glad we decided to try it out! This was probably some of the best and freshest sushi I've ever had. The toro sashimi just melted in our mouths, and the 5 rolls we ordered were amazing and very well priced, especially for the quality of the sushi that we received.
We ordered the (listed as favorite to least favorite) Ocean Dream Roll, Bella Roll, Lady Mango Roll, Crunchy GoGo Roll, and the Harmony Roll. I don't think I would order the Harmony Roll in comparison to the others again as it was just okay, but for $6, it was pretty good! I also posted a photo of our order if you care to check it out.
I went to Ebisu on Robson last year and thought that the sushi there was pretty good, but I think I've found a new favorite this year. I'll be going back to Sushi Bella again for sure before I leave Vancouver. Oh, and the service was excellent as well. :)
There's a reason why it is so well lit.... Short: Beautiful plating, delicious food, fantastic service
Long: Exquisite. The food in itself is standard sushi fare, but it is fresh and what should be expected of a Japanese restaurant. The details in the taste are evident if you are being critical. The choices of sauces and mixes that are used (try the Bella tower and find it yourself!) may seem strange at first, it was delicious once we took our first few bites. Does the plating make a difference? Simply, Yes. The reason why there are so many comments on how the food looks is because there is very few options in Vancouver that offer the same experience. Each dish is plated spectacularly and was commented and enjoyed by my company.
As an aside, this is one of the first places where the manager not only greeted me and my date as I entered but also remembered our names when we left. Those are the details that make the dining experience enjoyable.
Would I go again: Yes. There's no doubt. It's fantastic spot for a date and casual enough to meet friends.
Great food & atmosphere!!!! They have fresh oysters - should definitely try ones with mango;)
Finally a good sushi place on Davie. Couple of friends and I went to Sushi Bella on Davie for dinner on a weekday night. The restaurant was busy (which is usually good sign for fresh food). We ordered Aloha Fish Tacos, Sashimi Nacho, Sashimi Sampler, Trio Agedashi Tofu, and Drunken Tiger Roll. Food is delicious and fresh. The server is attentive. The restaurant tables placement are not overly closed to each other. We had a great time at Sushi Bella, and I will definitely return.
I'm really happy about this place. I've been searching for a good sushi place in the west end. I will definitely come back.
Great Food! Great Service! Great Ambience!. Alike the other two Sushi Bella, food quality is of world class! Incorporating French into Japanese cuisine, all creative dishes wow me and my friends! Servers are very courteous and would fill up my tea regularly. No big wait for food! Price is reasonable. Great place for any occasion! LOVE!
Dishes are beautifully prepared, feeding both your eyes and stomach. There are three very popular locations around the city so you can enjoy it wherever you may be. I’m addition to the three restaurants, Chef Kabel of Sushi Bella has opened his forth, Blue Bella Seafood & Oyster, located on Robson street. If its a nearly as good as Sushi Bella, you are in for a treat. Lobster King Roll - lobster, avocado, cucumber, tuna tataki w/ roasted garlic aioli & garlic chips gh Crunchy Go-Go Roll – double prawn and yam tempura, avocado, crunchy flakes & chilli mayo Gh Bella Roll – real crab, beets, fresh tuna, wild salmon, ebi, hamachi &
I love the interior and decor of this restaurant. I became a fan of Sushi Bella from going to the one in Kits, but this one is one step more modern, and clean – simply because it’s clean. It’s nice to see such a beautiful restaurant on Davie st! They use my favourite colour teal throughout the restaurant – just lovely! I also love the branding (again), good service by all the staff, and they came to fill up the tea cups every so often. I got to sit by the window looking out onto Davie. It was early summer and it was nice under the still weak sunlight. We were seated by the door, and unfortunately, right outside were some bums smoking pot. Totally ruined the atmosphere. We closed the door for some time until it got a bit stuffy inside, but by then, they had stopped smoking. Teal coloured theme throughout interior Presentation at Sushi Bella is always considered well. It’s an artform in itself, starting from the unique names to their special rolls like “Dancing Queen” $12. For the pric

Sashimi is some of the best I’ve had here, it melted in your mouth. So fresh. Spider roll was great too.
Sushi Bella is pretty popular in North Vancouver. We have been to the Sushi Bella at Kitslano and now, it’s opening in Vancouver downtown too! Takoyaki Cooked octopus ball with fruit sauce, mayo, bonito, green onion It’s just ordinary takoyaki. Nothing special. Salmon Carpaccio Served with basil pesto & balsamic reduction with crispy garlic chips I always love their seasonings but this is not bad but also not impressive enough. Hawaiian Poke Fresh red tuna sashimi with soy and sesame dressing The display is lovely! The sesame oil smells nice but is too strong…it covers the freshness of the red tuna. Tuna Tataki Traditional styled seared tuna with our classic ponzu topping Not bad. Bella Tower Fresh salmon & tuna tartar, avocado, crab mix, wasabi mayo & pesto Very very tasty!!! It’s a must order at Sushi Bella, believe me. It looks wonderful and is very delicious. The seasonings are perfect. We all love the crab meat part. Garlic Sockeye Rock crab meat & shitake wrapped in fresh sock
