Review A La Mode Pie Cafe - Vancouver

My favourite place for clam chowder. I love that they bake a pastry topping which adds to the flavour and texture. A bit pricey but totally worth the drive to Granville Island. My only complaint is the switch to disposable bowls, I found that the chowders were not as hot as they were when served with the porcelain bowls. I'm guessing the disposable cups can't be heated too high without melting?

I heard a lot of good things about A La Mode so I went there with my friends. Located inside the public market, it has a selection of sweet and savoury pies. We tried the clam chowder and beef stew pot pie. The clam chowder is creamy with delicious potatoes and baked. The beef stew pot pie has good quality beef with a wide range of delicious vegetables. The broth is very rich and the puff pastry is flaky. Each costs around $15 and I highly recommend to try it! Follow my Instagram @michocolll for more food review.

I had the salmon pot pie! First time I've ever had one, and it was so crispy and delicious! They've got a lot of variety and I really recommend this place!!!

Tried the beef pot pie with salad. It was a delicous, warm, good quality beef pot pie with carrots and potatoes. The combo with salad makes for a balanced meal. Great place for lunch or dinner. The puff pastry was buttery and flaky. Yum.

Seafood chowder 🐟🦀🦐 is so tasty 😋 and have a chance to try the seasonal dessert 🍮 chocolate and raspberry pie. The chocolate is so creamy and rich love it 😍

Got the chicken pot pie and lemon meringue pie. The chicken pot pie had a flakey puffy pastry and the filling was savoury with a hint of spice. The lemon meringue was the perfect balance between sour and sweetness and the meringue had a nice crust and creamy flavour. Would definitely go back here again

Yum! Salmon Chowder as a pot pie was cute and delicious. Salad on the side for $13.50 was yum.

Really great selection of pies and friendly service at the counter. We got the clam chowder which was very hearty and warm and went really well with the pastry puff.

This is a small shop in the Granville Island Public Market specializing in sweet and savoury pies. During my visit there, I had their Key Lime Sliced Pie, Chocolate Individual Tart and Macadamia Nut Tart. I initially wanted their Coconut Cream Sliced Pie, but they apparently didn't have any ready yet. Not wanting to have to wait 1 hr, I decided to get their Pecan Sliced Pie. I quite enjoyed all of the treats. Price-wise, I do find the costs for most of their tarts to be quite steep; however, I think that their Macadamia Nut Tart to be reasonable since the nut's expensive, and they really load a lot of in the tart. Now, I should mention that I probably got undercharged during my visit: the guy at the till seemed to have trouble when he rung me up, and when I got my receipt, I noticed that he charged me $5.60 for everything, even though the prices on the board for their Pecan and Key Lime Pies were $7.15 and $7.52 respectively. And...I didn't go back and correct the mistake (I'm an awful person :(). All in all, I'm quite impressed by the food there, and I think it's definitely worth checking out if you are visiting the Public Market.<br/><br/>Chocolate Individual Tart ($5.60):<br/>3.5/5<br/>Although the shortbread looked a bit blond, it was quite tender , albeit very crumbly. The chocolate ganache was quite good, melted in my mouth, and had a nice bittersweet flavour. I do find there to be a bit too much crust vs. filling.<br/><br/>Macadamia Nut Tart ($5.60):<br/>4.5/5<br/>This was similar to a pecan tart, except with macadamia nuts. The crust was tender and flaky. It was filled chock-full of macadamia, which were fresh, crunchy and had a wonderful rich flavour, and was coated in a thick gooey sugar. This is the first time that I've had a macadamia tart, and I seriously wish people would use this nut more often, its freaking fantastic! <br/><br/>Pecan Sliced Pie ($5.60, listed as $7.15):<br/>4/5<br/>The crust once again was quite tender and flaky, although I did find the outer edge to be a bit too thick and overbaked. The filling was gooey and had a great caramel flavour, and a very generous amount of pecans. It was quite sweet - I personally didn't mind, but I think it might be a bit too much for others.<br/><br/>Key Lime Sliced Pie ($5.60, listed as $7.55):<br/>4/5<br/>The filling was smooth, creamy and sweet, with a texture that's similar too that of a cheesecake, while the breadcrumb crust cut easily had had a nice, slightly moist texture. I quite enjoyed the whipped cream as well, which seemed to have a slightly tangy flavour. I did find the filling to be lacking somewhat in lime flavour: I would have preferred there to be a bit more tang.<br/><br/>Summary:<br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Price: 3/5<br/>Service: N/A<br/>Overall: 3.5/5<br/>Recommendations: Macadamia Nut Tart, Pecan Sliced Pie, Key Lime Sliced Pie

Shopping for children’s day party tonight<br/>I went to the public market with my husband <br/>Before shopping we decided to enjoy a light lunch at the pier area. <br/>There is a shop called a-la-mode serving soup and some small bites. <br/>There are various choices of soup for your selection. <br/>Mrs Liu’s Choice : cream chowder<br/>Sea view + Tasty Soup = perfect lunch 🉐<br/>I have already chosen onion soup for the next visit. <br/>

I eat the salmon pot and chicken pot pie, i can say is the best of Vancouver. Grandville Market is really full, but waiting for a table worth!!!

Average at best.<br/><br/>We got the beef pot pie and the chicken pot pie for about $8-$10 each. They're small in size and overpriced imo. Nothing special about them. Seating was also impossible to find.<br/><br/>Overall, good but I wouldn't pay that price for it.

At A La Mode on Granville Island, it's all about pies.  Available in savoury and sweet options, A La Mode's display case will put you in the mood for pie.

Absolutely mind-blowing salmon chowder pot pie!! Had it twice already! I most definitely will be back for more. Maybe the giant lemon meringue pie next time?

Top notch clam chowder man.  This place was legit.  I thought it would be a scammy $10 clam chowder gone wrong but it was actually very creamy with a sufficient amount of potatoes and clams, all covered up by a buttery pastry flake on top.  It was to die for, really.  I don't think I've ever tasted a clam chowder that good since Seattle Airport or in Pacific Wharf Cafe, Disneyland, Anaheim, California.

Overall. Very pricey place. Spent $20 on one chicken soup and two tarts. My soup to go was served in a coffee to go cup. the pastry top was popped off and placed on a few lettuce leaves and tomato with balamic dressing. Not very good presentation plus rude customer service. Its a shame because the dish is quite tastey and same with the tarts. <br/><br/>If ur going to stick with the prices then the dish needs to be presented and served in a classier way and cut the crap staff. They are obnoxious and dont care about their job.<br/><br/><br/>-----10 Mar, 2015-----<br/><br/>Pecan Tart. Giant soft pecans with yummy pastry dough<br/><br/><br/>-----10 Mar, 2015-----<br/><br/>Macadamia Nut Tart. Amazing!! Nice crunchy nuts not too sweet but tastes great with a coffee

I don't get it. Why do people like this place so much?<br/>Asked for "mushroom soup" which was told by a jewellery vendor there that it was good,<br/>and got soup in a coffee mug with pastry top (could have done without the top, just wanted the soup).<br/>Anyhow, the soup was milky/watery, not at all the thick consistency that I would have liked.<br/>On top of that, it clearly used canned mushrooms and tomatoes, didn't see any onions or garlic.<br/><br/>This cost me $8.80. *ouch* Lesson learned. HARD!

Pies are not that good. Beef pie was stew with a layer of pastry on top. Clam chowder was too runny with very few clams and potatoes, again with a thin layer of pastry on top. Pies are VERY overpriced and not that tasty. Much better options at Granville Island.

Very slow service, pies are not good

Great Pies Wrong prices. Had the Apple Pie A La Mode, it was delicious! A tip for the owner... Please update your prices on your display boards. What we were charged WAS NOT what was displayed on the boards. It was more $.<br/>The workers there told us this was the updated price they were suppose to charge because the owner hasn't gotten around to updating her prices on the display boards. Again, Great yummy pies here!

Delicious tart!. I ordered a Bumbleberry tart at A La Mode on the weekend. It was absolutely delicious! It wasn't too sweet and the custard was delicate but still tasted like homemade custard from scratch. Working on trying all the bakeries in Granville Island, and this one is my favourite so far!

An Insult to Pies Everywhere. It was a beautiful day out today so my boyfriend and I decided to go to Granville Island. We came across A La Mode and I'm a sucker for savory pies so I couldn't resist. I ordered a mushroom pot pie to go so we could go sit and eat in the sunshine. What I received wasn't pie. It was a $9 cup of crappy mushroom soup and the top of a bun. As you can see in the photo, this could no way be pie so we went back thinking our order got messed up. Nope, it's correct it's just that bad. One of the worst dining experiences ever. Disgusting.

The girl at the counter welcome us with big smile. We asked some extra questions to make sure the food was vegan and she was very patient to answer our questions. She also made sure we ate eggs (because some vegan people do not eat eggs).<br/><br/>We ordered mushroom soup and spinach pie. Mushroom soup was out so we had to wait extra 10 minutes. We had no problem. We found the seat by the windows. It was hot when I received the soup. It had good smell. The mushroom soup was like a cream of mushroom. We crushed the warm and hot puff pastry into the soup. It was creamy.

Okay, well you know Dom and I. We finish eating at one place, walk a little whiles down and eat at another place. Well, to be fair, all of our other friends had a little dessert as well! Dom insisted that this place has the best key lime pie of life so pie? Okay, I’m in. Oh this place! I’ve been here before. I didn’t remember it as anything fantastic so I didn’t really have any expectations. The service was slow and unenthusiastic. That’s okay, I can overlook bad service for good food. It took about ten minutes for us to even get our order in! I had a  Lemonade ($3.95) . It wasn’t as sweet as I would have liked but kinda in a good way. It was pretty good with the pie and an overall good way to quench my thirst. Those fish and chips at Celine’s were pretty greasy I guess. Okay prepare yourselves for the best pie of life. We had a  Key Lime Pie ($5.67) . I thought it was the last slice left but after we ate, it looks like they only put one slice out at once. It was really, really good li

We wanted to have soup with the puff pastry on top so we headed over to à la mode. There is always an assortment of soups, pies, and other pastries on display here making it hard to choose which one to try! I ended up ordering a Chicken Pot Pie with salad and a slice of blueberry cheesecake.

A La Mode features list-fulls of sweet and savoury pies. I really did want to get my lunch here, but again with wanting to go light. He got the Salmon Pie ($8).

A La Mode specializes in pie, be it savory pot pies or dessert pies. Actually, pot pie is a bit of a misnomer, as the taste and presentation is often more like an incredibly thick and creamy soup in a bowl, covered with freshly baked pastry.
Kev Wu
The puff pastry on top was very light and fluffy. You might not be able to tell from the picture, but it’s very soupy, not what a pot pie should be like…chunky and full of stuff! Still, it had good sizeable chunks of chicken and mushrooms, and Kevin’s bee

A La Mode is located in the food court section of Granville Island. There is normally a line up when you get there. They serve a variety of pot pies. I tried the chicken pot pie and thought it was pretty good. The best part was breaking the crust in! It a

If you have been to Granville Island you probably have seen this spot. Deep in the corner of the Granville Island market sits this kiosk/cafe with the name A LA MODE. I have eaten here many times, I used to order the beef stew or the seafood chowder but I

One of my favourite stops for pie is A La Mode, inside the Granville Island Public Market and near the Edible British Columbia shop. They do terrific meringues and sensational pot pies. Do check them out sometime.
