Review Cibo Trattoria - Vancouver

Dejan Ratkov
We had a company meeting in Vancouver, finally first time after pandemic, and this was a great place to meet and celebrate the occasion Colleague who lives in Vancouver booked this room, and in this setup it could accommodate a good number of people (in our case 12) Food was delicious, however their portions were on a bit smaller side. Also, service for the separate room was good in terms of 2 people covering the event, however I found them a bit slower than we would expect.

🍝🍝🍝🍸🍸🍸 I can tell our chef really puts passion to his cuisine. He ensured our service was top notch. I wish I took better photos. I love our pasta dishes. Thank you Jesse !! Really pleasurable experience in a small and romantic restaurant. I will recommend this to friends.

The menu looked limited but turns out they do a TON of specials including vegetarian options, and not just for dinner! 2 of us has a special and both were so yummy! There were only desserts with espresso in them, and the chef made me an off-menu custom dessert. It was AMAZING and fast. We’re from out of country and Jordan (our server) was so helpful in helping curate our plans for the next few days - where to go but spend less time / where to hit that wasn’t on our list. Hotel Moda is great, the coffee shop in the AM is great. Cibo food, dessert, service is great! Townie or visiting 100% recommend. Wish i could have brunch but we fly out Friday 😩 For a delicious and quiet weeknight dinner definitely stop by!

Came here last valentines for their special course meal. Really good food, great quality and absolutely love the atmosphere. If you’re still looking for a Valentine’s Day date this is definitely a must try!

Cibo is the best yet lonely restaurant in Vancouver! Cibo is an Italian restaurant with unbelievably delicious cuisine! If you pass by the restaurant, you are most likely to not choose to eat or drink there because of its decoration and how it looks! Yet, you must try it and you never regret it! 🖼 The decoration is so warm & charming. Ventilation is cool and patio is also a smart option! 🍱 I can’t emphasize more on the food quality! We couldn’t believe how four different breakfast options taste completely different and all super delicious! You will definitely understand that there is a chef behind! Someone professional is behind the scenes! 🌿 If you are so picky, go for classic benny and the Sicilian ones as the manager suggested them and they were cool. The sausage used in food is like no other and tastes awesome! ☕️ The coffee is of high quality as well and don’t miss that. Enjoy the uniqueness!👌

This is more a 4.5. When we first got in, we were all blown away by the beautiful and eclectic decor. It felt like an art piece. We were pleasantly the only diners for a late brunch and came specifically for the build-your-own mimosa, although we were warned that Prosecco might be sold out. Nonetheless we would have been happy to try a wine flight alternatively but our server worked her magic and managed to organize it for us! We all ordered mains but ended up sharing the tiramisù stuffed French toast as our dessert and hands down, this blew our minds - absolutely delicious! Overall it was a really unique and fun experience to build our own mimosa and prices were such a great value for downtown. The highlight that complemented our whole experience was our awesome server, she was down-to-earth, super funny and went out of the way for us. Would definitely go back!

The calamari was our appetizer and I would say it was good. It tasted very fresh but I just wanted a little bit more flavor. It was definitely nice to have the fish as the main focus but I still think they could of snuck in some more seasoning. Desert was fantastic, lemon ricotta cheesecake...Delicious! Crunchy almonds on top, just ridiculous!

This is a lovely small restaurant, though with a brief menu. Our dinners were very good, but there were a couple of issues. Although our server hustled, it took about 50 minutes for our meals to arrive. The seafood pasta was spicier than expected (told that it was mild spice) and the only seafood was 2 prawns.

We had an enjoyable Italian dining experience at Cibo Trattoria.<br/><br/>Buon Appetito!<br/><br/>Focaccia Bread<br/><br/>Bread is served with olive oil and vintage balsamic vinegar. It was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside.<br/><br/>Cannelloni di maiale<br/><br/>Cannelloni is a cylindrical type of lasagna and baked with a filling. The stuffings include braised pork and ricotta. Its Tuscan kale puree goes well with the Focaccia bread. Their pasta dishes are small and served as a second course.<br/><br/>Tiramisu<br/><br/>It was presented like an ice-cream sandwich. It was very tasty!<br/><br/>Cibo Trattoria is located in downtown Vancouver. It is attached to the Moda hotel at 900 Seymour Street, Vancouver BC. This was the starting point of our adventures on the Dine Out Vancouver Preview Tour. This restaurant is located in the Hotel Moda, a boutique hotel on the corner of Seymour. Cibo Trattoria is the sister restaurant to UVA, a wine bar that basically shares the same space in another room, so it’s a little confusing at first to get your mind oriented to the space.

Interesting how diverse the reviews are. The negatives seem to emphasize cost and "unhurried" service (sometimes to the extreme). We ate here for the 1st time using a Groupon. We left impressed. Not that it was all flawless (despite very few diners (Tuesday, lunchtime) service was a bit slow). And they delivered my wife the wrong dish! However, that gave us another complete meal to bring home (it was dinner), and they were gracious and apologetic about it. Now, the food: their foccacia is lovely; fresh, hot, with a hint of spice and first-class parmesan cheese on it. Beautiful balanced flavours. Following that as an appy was their polenta "frites". Polenta is nice, fried polenta is twice nice, fried polenta with a diverse herb dipping sauce in great olive oil: thrice nice. That the sticks were flawlessly cut (details matter at this price point) and served straight from the fryer - extra credit. <br/><br/>Continuing our carb orgy, pappardelle with wild mushroom sauce (mostly morels, I think) was the lighter of the two (well, three including the mistake). In contrast to others who have written about slow service, this took about 5 minutes from order to table. My choice was spaghetti carbonara: I think of this as a super-creamy, super rich, eggy dish. Their version was actually rather meaty - brunoise'd pancetta perfectly bound in the creamy sauce. In addition to the unexpected "pancetta-ness", there were two flavour components I wasn't expecting. One was red-pepper heat, subtle but definitely present. The other was sweetness. This could have been from the cheese; it could have been some additional ingredient. Can't decide whether I welcomed it - might have to try again. I've forgotten the name of the "extra" dish we got - medium/broad noodles (fettuccine?), veal based ragu. Nice but not as good as our other choices - but the price was right!<br/><br/>The dinner menu looks awesome. I'd go with the veal cheeks. <br/><br/>The server and manager were both gracious hosts - the manager's demeanour showed definite pride in the place - he wasn't a braggart but clearly pleased with the restaurant. As far as other comments about the decor, I thought at the time "it's nice this isn't so polished as to be pretentious, yet has some visual appeal". I looked up "trattoria" - "less formal than a ristorante, but more formal than an osteria" - I think it fits.<br/><br/>Some here were annoyed at the water charge. I agree. Vancouver tap water is just excellent, and the $1/person charge for XYZ water just seems like a money grab.

Average for this genre. The service was very slow here. My halibut was over cooked. The sauce with kalamata olives were good and I enjoyed the slight hint of Spice in the brocolini. The restaurant was empty and unfortunately, I get why. With better option nearby such as Italian Kitchen or Pentola, this place either needs to improve quality or give the restaurant decor a face lift.

I stayed at the Moda over the Easter long weekend and was consistently pleased with the quality of service and the food from their thoughtful and well executed menu.

Nice location, great service and decor. Food was tasty but a little underwhelming for the price. We went for brunch and it was pretty quiet. I would come back to try their dinner options.

This is my all time favorite restaurant. I love their food and wine. I never get disappointed when I go there everytime. They have a large selection of wines. Robert, the GM always well explains and suggests the wine based on my preference and my budget. This guy is awesome.

Close to the Orpheum theatre, located in the Moda hotel, this small room, serving simple and tasty Italian fare is great for a pre-theatre dinner ($35 for the set menu 5 to 7pm) or a relaxed multi-course evening. Chef is Neil Taylor, formerly of London’s

Cibo Trattoria is located in the chic boutique Moda Hotel next to UVA Wine Bar. The restaurant seats 40 and has a cozy dining atmosphere that is intimate yet casual. We love the window seats pouring in with natural lighting and the high top wooden tables by the fireplace. Would you believe it if we told you, we’ve never been to Cibo before?

Poor food, overpriced. My wife and friend had the "brick chicken" that was full of fat and dripping in oil. A tough green stuff tasted like kale, and there were no chanterelles as stated in the menu. They were $30!<br/><br/> I had the risotto which was tasty but a very small portion and absolutely nothing else, no crusty bread, not even any decoration.<br/><br/>The bread that was served consisted of four, very small cubes of plain focaccia with "olive oil drizzled over top."<br/><br/>They even charged for water, even though we also ordered over-priced wine and beer!<br/><br/>Not at all impressed.

Not vegan friendly.....and very expensive. First of all I would like to start by saying the staff at this restaurant were superb, caring and knowledgeable. They are well a cut above the food served.<br/><br/>I found the food to be very ordinary in flavour, small in portion and at times miniature, like the 4 tiny cubes of focaccia served as the bread. I had spaghetti Bolognese as it was one of the few dishes I could order that could be made dairy free. I am thinking the cheese would have given it more flavour as I found the sauce without much flavour other than the meats used.<br/><br/>The chef appears to be of the butter and cream school of cooking. Therefore, although the restaurant is attentive to gluten, vegetarian and so forth, it is not the place to avoid dairy. There were few entrees I could choose. There was not one dessert to be had that did not include dairy.<br/><br/>I found the prices very high for all the portions. I believe this is due to the prime location of this restaurant.

Meh..just okay. This place used to be so good, but now I feel like over the years it has become just average, not bad thankfully. I wish it would step up their game to other Italian restaurants in the area. I would root for them, they have so much potential.

Most under rated restaurant in the city! I have been here a dozen times and it never fails to impress. The price point is excellent and the menu is varied and delicious. The wine list is extensive but reasonably priced. I can't say enough good things about this place

Snail slow service and super small portions..... Should have paid attention to reviews before making a reservation prior to Jann Arden at the Orpheum. Arrived at 6:00PM. Ordered a drink, starter and main course all at the same time!!! Took 45 MINUTES for a mai-tai to be mixed. Another 15 MINUTES for it to make it from the bar counter to our table not five feet away. The server kept on reassuring us our drinks were "on the way" until I pointed them out to him on the bar counter. Watery no taste mai-tai with NO dark run float. We're at 7PM. 10 MINUTES later the starter arrives. Server assures us main courses are on the wsy...7:10....7:20...7:30....7:40...ONE HOUR AND FORTY MINUTES AFTER PLACING ORDER...NOTHING!!! MAITRE DE comes to our table and basically lectures us on wanting to see the "opening act" (Rose Cousins - BRILLIANT singer-songwriter). Food arrives at 7:50. Almost TWO HOURS after placing order. MINISCULE side plate of pasta and another with spaghetti and ground beef - NO olives, NO paremesan, NO nothing. Maitre De has the absolute gall to say, "I'm sure you'll agree it was worth the wait." REALLY!!! Too bad this place will continue to do business because of its proximity to the Orpheum. TOTALLY SUCKS!

Loved our dinner!. Our group of 5 dined here last night and all our meals were wonderful. Smaller portions so I suggest a starter.<br/>I had a beet salad and the best breast of duck I have ever had. Melt-in-your mouth tenderness. We shared the roasted bone marrow, which was very unusual and very good ! The one Vegan in our group enjoyed a green salad with the cheese omitted, and a Risotto dish. They even served hot almond soy milk for his after-dinner drink. A nice touch is serving a choice of sparkling or still water automatically.<br/>I love the fact that it is quiet & elegant and you can have a good conversation. We were celebrating a senior's birthday and this was essential. Nice decor and warm fireplace. We will be back.

Dine Out Vancouver 2014. Leek and potato soup, greens, creme fraiche 3/5 - soup was like an onion soup.. a little bit on the salty side..a little too boring for me..not my liking<br/>salad of arugula, treviso, fennel, pomegranates, spiced almonds, goat's cheese 4.5/5 - right amount of dressing and freshly toasted almonds. Nothing to complain<br/>beef carpaccio, roasted squash, greens, mustard dressing +$5 3.5/5 - The quality of the beef wasn not that good. The beef was not tender enough to be called a carpaccio. There wasn’t enough dressing in the salad. The Vancouver Sun article talked about how soft the squash was. The squash was not as soft as I thought.<br/><br/>roasted steelhead trout, sunchokes, rapini, tuscan fish broth 4.75/5 - I asked for a little bit on the rare side. It was cooked perfectly! I wish I took a picture of that. The fish broth was tomato based and it was too salty for me. The rapini was sitting in the soup which made it too salty. I was surprised that our server did not give us a spoon for this. <br/>fresh tagliatelle, veal & pork bolognaise, parmigiano regianno 4/5 - My friend found the pasta too hard but I was fine with that. I prefer hard than mushy. The meat sauce was on the salty side but acceptable when I had it with the pasta. Reasonable amount of meat and cheese too.<br/>crispy pork belly, mustard lentils, roasting juices & salsa verde +$5 3.5/5 - the layers of fat were too thick. There was not much left. I guess some people might like that. The crispy skin was good but nothing comparable to the one from Meat and Bread. My friend enjoyed the mustard lentils more than the pork.<br/><br/>vanilla panna cotta with roman brandy & amaretti 4.5/5 - The alcohol made this so special. I really liked the panna cotta which was not too sweet.<br/>flourless chocolate cake, creme fraiche 3.5/5 - a little on the smaller size. The creme fraiche tasted like sour cream. That was a good match.<br/><br/>Service was good that good. I need to ask our server to fill up our glasses a few times. They were not keeping track of what kind of water (sparkling vs still) when they refill your glasses. You need to tell them explicitly what you want. I had high hopes for this dinner after reading a review in the Vancouver Sun. It was highly recommending for the upgrades. It really recommend for the $10 upgrade so 1 of us decided to go with that. It wasn’t worth it. I would be happier if I didn't read that.

Good food but I'm pretty sure that the staff are mandated to have fake accents.

Disappointing. I had been to the wine bar for pasta and wine before, and while I didn't love the atmosphere, the pasta was great and the location fine. Went back last night and was very disappointed. The service was ok, until the rush came, and we were without water refills or drink refills for over 30min (at least). When asking for recommendations on cheese etc, we asked for 3 various types but got 2 dried out hard ones, and one decent blue. My Jim Green cocktail was disgustingly sweet (I don't think the late great would have been impressed). I was told it was going to be "well-balanced". All in all, a bit overpriced and pretentious. I wish them well, but probably won't be back, even though I live close by.

Amazing pizza and pasta. Highly recommend for lunch to avoid higher prices.

Loved it!. Service warm, friendly and knowledgeable. food unusual but not weird and absolutely delicious. not cheap but not off the charts either. my daughter and I had a special evening where we felt well cared for a very well fed.

Dining Experience. This restaurant is way too pricy for the portion and quality of its meals. The meat/seafood entrees start at $24 and up then they charge you extra for the sauce which was an additional $7-10?!! The sauce is nothing more than a concoction of herbs and a few vegetable and sauces mixed together. I find it rather misleading that you have to pay extra for something that is under the entree heading. Halibut is on the dry side and there was nothing spectacular about the beets with a few sprinkles of goat cheese and tiny pieces of pancetta that it merits a $14 price tag. Coffee and wine were good but other than that it isn't worth the price.
Weisandy
Not Bad. A group of 5 for dine-out. The servers were very nice and polite. Also, personable and were knowledgable with the drink menu. The environment is calm and warm. The chicken liver is to die for. The risotto is too cheesy/salty and the pork is just okay. However, the chocolate dessert is truly the best thing on the menu. Would go again for drinks and dessert.

Les. Last night a group of us (7) went for dinner prior to Stewart McLean's show at the Orpheum. We were designated as a "large group" (even though the threshold was apparently 8) and were forced to pick from a pitiful fixed menu.. not that it was busy.. we where the ONLY people in the place.. the waitress was surly and miserable through the entire meal.. we had to ask for EVERYTHING.. had we not continually flagged her down we would not have and a drop to drink.. the food was pitiful.. lukewarm, and obviously pre-prepared and sitting.. they were swift at removing things from our table, but glacial at providing us with service.. when one of our party went to the manager to express our displeasure at our treatment by our waitress his comment was a shrug and "oh, that's too bad"... he could care less.. unbelievable.. and to add insult to injury, they put on an 18% gratuity onto the bill.. I have NEVER not tipped, but I was going to last night.. and to have that right removed was unforgivable.. I will never return.. a horrible experience for us all. I would NEVER recommend this place.. Vancouver is rife with wonderful places to eat that are welcoming and hospitable.. this was the antithesis of that...

Watch out for the truffles fresh sheet. Came back tonight from Cibo Trattoria in the Moda Hotel. Another overpriced meal. Excellent food mostly, and deserving of the various awards it's garnered since opening in 2009, but the price tag was frightening.<br/><br/>Here's the damage:<br/>$5 Sicilian Pannelle (3 triangles)<br/>$8 Crispy Pig's Trotters (3 pieces plus token coleslaw-like salad)<br/>$5 Fried Egg and Tuna Bottarga Bruschetta<br/>$55 Truffle Quail (quail with some potato and, apparently, enough truffle to price it at $55)<br/>$24 Two glasses of white wine<br/>$8 Chocolate Nemesis "River Cafe"<br/><br/>After tax it was $119.84 !<br/><br/>The Pannelle was delicate and interesting to try if you've never had it before. Fresh from the fryer, it was very cripsy on the outside and spiced enough to be salty and tasty all on its own. The inside was hot and creamy with some rosemary (?). Overall, definitely finger food and not for the ham-fisted as you'd just destroy it. Pick it up not too close to the end or the crust will just snap off. When you bite, you can quite gently tear off a chunk.<br/>I would have to say this appy was the highlight of my night -- delicious, and with interesting, sharply contrasting, texture. At $5 for 3 wedges each about two square inches, it's the only item that I thought was priced fairly, or a bit underpriced considering how good it was.<br/><br/>The Pig's Trotters were fritters with chunks of reddish meat and other stuff inside. It definitely tasted like pork, but also had a fatty taste to it. Not too special here. The salad that looks like coleslaw had capers in it, and helped to offset the fattiness with sharp sourness. I recommend giving this one a pass.<br/><br/>The Bruschetta plates are single-slices of french bread maybe 30% bigger than your credit card and cut about a centimeter thick. Averaging $5 each, that's steep. I was intrigued by the tuna bottarga and ordered it. The fried egg was very conveniently done, with a yolk that was soft, but not so soft that it dribbled all over the place if you cut it -- which we did so I could share it with my dining companion. The red and grated bottarga (preserved roe pouch) had a hint of tuna smell, but otherwise predominantly salty. They could have just dusted the egg with fancy sea salt and it wouldn't have been too much different. At $5? -- Give this a pass.<br/><br/>My companion ordered just the wine and quail for herself. The quail was so small I declined to have any of it, so I can't comment. Hopefully she appreciated the truffles as it weighed in at a frightening $55. It's not on the online menu, but rather on a separate menu of truffled items.<br/><br/>The "Chocolate Nemesis 'River Cafe'" was a thin wedge of flourless chocolate cake, accompanied by a tablespoon of stiff sour cream. It was creamy, more like a ganache. Not the best I've tasted, but decent enough. My dining companion raved about it, however. At $8 it's not bad value.

Great food and service. A bit pricy but it's worth it.

Very good, very italian. This place seems to specialize in that clever Italian art of combining simplicity and brilliance. The options available to vegetarians were, on the occasion I was there, rather limited, but I understand the menu changes often so they may not always be so. Probably worth checking before you go, if that's a concern. Service in the restaurant was good (although, it had been much less good in the adjoining wine bar earlier). Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Stunning - Vancouver's Best Italian but Don't Tell Everyone. We visited last night. To get to the point - this place is OUTSTANDING.<br/><br/>We are on holiday from the UK and were delighted to find that the Exec Chef used to be at the River Cafe in London ( a favourite of ours in the UK).<br/><br/>His touch is clearly influenced by the River Cafe and there are one or two direct nods to his time there.<br/><br/>The quality of ingredients is second to none and they are treated creatively and respectfully.<br/><br/>I had some of their house made charcuterie which was sublime and beautifully presented.<br/><br/>I also had the house made cotechino sausage which was amazing.<br/><br/>Desserts were amazing - especially the River Cafe Chocolate Nemesis.<br/><br/>Wine list is well sourced with plenty of great BC wines.<br/><br/>Service was fantastic - our waitress relayed our comments back to the chef and we were invited to visit the kitchen and chat to the chef.<br/><br/>An amazing night all round. <br/><br/>PS Please don't share this with everyone. It's too special

... very creamy burrata w hints of truffle (truffle flavor not strong); good texture of the bread, crisp yet dense and a touch nutty; very flavorful olive oil...
J At Vanbrosia.com
... perfectly cooked pasta, a touch on the al dente side; good flavors, but needs more bolognese personally; a meltier kind of cheese would have been better for texture purposes but the parmesan was good...

... excellent flavor balance; well thought out dish - loved the fact that you can scoop up a piece of everything presented on the plate...

I love this dish, but it might not be for everyone; the 'crackling' actually has a cartilage texture, the way I like it.

I thought choosing Father's Day, for a dinner with the girls, would be a busy one at most restaurants. However I found my reservations moot as I entered "Cibo" at 7:30pm on a Sunday. I have been here once before, but now was specifically back to meet one of my guest's request for bone marrow. I remembered my first trip here fondly. After drinks at their sister and neighboring wine bar "UVA", I had walked a few paces, cutting through "Hotel Moda's" to reach "Cibo".   "Hotel Moda" is a boutique hotel, one of those stand alone and privately own, not a chain hotels. As a part of their business, aside from their two restaurants, they also have their own liquor store. There the same bottles they sell, they also serve at both their bistro and bar.   The restaurant was a space of corners and off sides. The bar is the first thing you notice when you walk in. But on it is not a bottle in sight, instead it is lined with glassware. Overlooking it is a collage of mirrors, the assortment varies in s

Located a block east of popular Granville Street and beside Moda Vancouver Hotel, Cibo - Italian slang for food or festive feast - Trattoria serves Italian-inspired cuisines using fresh seasonal ingredients from Vancouver. We started off at the quaint Cibo Trattoria for some white wine and canapés, such as the panelle (Sicilian chickpea fritter), various sourdough bites, and veal crudo, which I absolutely loved. It had a wonderful texture to it and the addition of parmesan was quite nice.

As for dinner, I had a fairly rich, delectable gnocchi (above) and a chewy but meaty aged strip loin steak (below) slabbed in horseradish, cooked very rare. My highlight was the fine and indulgent flour-less chocolate cake.

The first hint of the food quality was that the in-house baked focaccia was so perfect that we ate all four pieces of it within minutes of taking the first bite. And this was despite my resolution not to have bread because we had ordered two of the bruschetta selections and I thought that would be more than enough bread for one meal.

Overall, I really loved the room at Cibo, and the dishes were delicious and rich (bring some Rolaids for afterward).
