Review Juniper Restaurant - Vancouver

Amazing cocktails whether you're a gin fan or not! Server was very knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. Something for everyone from carnivore, to vegan, to celiac! Appreciates all the options and great dessert selection. Great atmosphere for girls' night or date night. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing spot! Food is fresh and exciting! Cocktails are also pretty great. Had the rum cake which wasn't great but everything else was amazing. Service is friendly and fast and their vegan dishes are very tasty. Will definitely be back!

The cocktails here were really outstanding! But what surprised me was that the food was super yummy too! We had the pork belly, bison and scallop which were all really delicious. The cheesecake we felt was really well balanced and tasty. The only think i would not recommend is the bread which at $9 for 3 slices of bread and 2 pretzel sticks that were just mediocre, it was really overpriced.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the food at Juniper. Their charcuterie board was alright but their risotto was not good at all. As for their cocktails, they were alright. Old fashioned was strong AF. The issue was that for a finer dining place, I sat in a chair that resembled a lawn chair or outdoor patio chair. The prices didn’t justify the experience for me.

This place is located in the new trendy part of China Town, well what is left of the 10 stores in China Town. Food is quite good but there is direct correlation in prices. service was also quite good. I would say if your going here with a friend look to spend $70-100. I would say this is a perfect spot to grab a drink and lay low in the dark ambience. The server was super awesome, she heard it was someone's bday at my table and presented them with a deconstructed apple pie. High five for apple pie

Amazing taste of every cocktail! Wide selection with all kinds of ingredients you can imagine. And menu is very helpful, explaining every details in cocktail, helping customer to choose.

We recently decided, that after years of focusing on finding the perfect Craft beer...that we truly miss a great refreshing cocktail. We had walked by Juniper before and decided to check it out. The atmosphere and decor is super chill and inviting. My girlfriend has recently gone Vegan so finding good options can be difficult. We had the Vegan board and their made in house breads. Absolutely fantastic. Now to the drinks...Gareth is a genius when it comes to his development of the extensive cocktail menu. We sampled all of the G&T's and then had him mix up a couple of new concoctions. He puts on quite the show, while engaging the patrons. Michael the manager between running orders to the tables still took the time to introduce himself..Well done... we'll be back.

The place is just ok because it is a bit over priced (definitely not $$ but $$$). The cocktails are ok, too much ice (see pics) and sweeter than usual. Had the albercore tuna which was good but not great.

One of my favorite places for drinks and this is one of the best places to try a variety of gin and tonics. My favorite is the Watchdog G&T (it's light and fruity). I've also tried the Juniper G&T and the Bear Paw G&T, both are also great but not as fruity as the Watchdog. Bear Paw has a lot of ice with it, which I'm not a huge fan. Overall, you can't go wrong with a bar that uses Fever Tree brand tonic :)

3.5/5 I came for their cocktail selection, and I didn't disappoint at all. I love their cocktails, especially the one with Canadian whiskey. Some dishes were too salty for my taste, however, the server was nice and asked chef to put less salt on my order. Overall, it is a nice place for late night hang out.

Late night eats with friends after a movie! We shared a few dishes and enjoyed our meal. Tacos and pork belly and a few appies. Nice choice of cocktails

Atmosphere: It felt loud and the chair I sat in reminded me of an uncomfortable lawn chair. The whole place had a posh vibe but the lawn chairs. Bottom line: We came here for the charcuterie board and it felt underwhelming. It was my first ever and I was expecting quite a bit for the $23. The shoulder deli meat was nice, grainy mustard was tasty, and the pickled veg was a nice touch. But the Tuna risotto... Tuna was good, the risotto was meh and it was a pricey dish. Highlights of the night? Probably the drinks, Grapefruit Mule was really good but their Gin Old Fashioned is a pass.

I happened to stop by at Juniper for a beer after traipsing around Chinatown on a hot afternoon. The place has a huge list of unique cocktails, a pretty decent wine list, and also a handful of craft beers. I ended up having two beers and, after perusing the menu, I decided to come back for a meal…

There's tons of great food and shopping in this area. Juniper is where you go for craft cocktails and late night eats. You MUST try their decadent cheese trays. I'd never had fish charcuterie but I'd kill to have it again!
Picky Diner
Our cocktail crawl experience at Juniper slightly suffered from the disappointment of the 42-dollar Huli Huli. If I could do it again, I would definitely rather have 4 of us order 4 different cocktails instead. As their snacks seemed quite decent, and I would probably come back to try their food next time.

My pick this year for my annual birthday dinner with Fannypack was Juniper Restaurant in Chinatown. I was intrigued with their huge gin cocktail menu and Fannypack sure sounded excited when I suggested the place so off we went!. Juniper Restaurant bar side Juniper Restaurant dining room

I love the abundance of Happy Hour options near my office. My coworkers and I wanted to grab a quick drink after work to celebrate the holidays. We headed to Juniper as they had a earlier happy hour than some other places. On their happy hour menu, they have:. They also have some food options too. I’m a beer drinker, so I got the Four Winds La Mason Saison on tap. The beer is part of Four Wind’s Notus Series, named after the Greek God of the South Winds, is a series of their low-ABV brews.

Juniper is a unique cocktail bar & restaurant on Keefer street in Chinatown. They have an amazing selections of creative hand crafted cocktails with focus on gin and tonics by Shaun Layton (former head bartender at L'Abbatoire). This is a must go bar & restaurant for gin lovers, you cannot go wrong here! Dishes were tasty and well presented. Decent price and good service.
Visions & Actions
We were searching for a fancier place for a celebratory dinner when we walked past Juniper in Chinatown. The restaurant was in the gentrified part of Chinatown and was very popular and fully booked. Luckily for us they were able to squeeze us in since someone didn’t show up for their reservation. ✌️

We were looking for a reverse happy hour destination. That is when a restaurant or a bar has regular happy hour specials for after work (3pm to 6pm), and then again from late to close (10pm to 2pm). We googled and found a blogger listing her top favourite picks. When we got there we were sad to learn that this didn’t excited. There were no late night drink and food specials, and we weren’t getting anything for less by coming here after dinner. But given how lovely everything looked and how happy all those that were seated looked, we decided to stay anyway.

This place has amazing cocktails. I suppose you have to if you are going to plop yourself next to The Keefer and be remotely competitive. Prices are well inflated for everything here though. We had the perogies to nibble on with our drinks. Don't get them. Lacked seasoning, flavor and didn't like them pan fried. True perogies should be boiled and soft. Also, at $15, three perogies is an apaling gip. I'm sure there mains are better and would come back again to eat a proper meal. Actually the best part of this restaurant is their Scotsman ice machine, which as far as I know is the only one in Vancouver. Their ice literally doesn't melt. It's mind blowing and makes for perfect chilled cocktails! Wohoo!

The Rad-ish is the best G&T I've ever had. First trip blew me away: the pork chop and accompanying greens were delicious and perfectly cooked. Service became scarce as the room go busier. Second trip a few weeks later was a little underwhelming with small portions (ex. sablefish) and dishes either sold out or no longer on the menu.

Juniper - Chinatown, $40 Dineout

-$1.50/hr metered parking nearby
-skip the food, just come for the COCKTAILS.

Wing Sang Sour (whisky, lemon, toasted black sesame, ginger, mezcal, egg white)

Rating: A-

Notes: Fabulous harmonious balance of alcohol, sweet, sour, and aroma. A unique touch with the toasted sesame, as it is the main flavour tasted. The ginger and mezcal are expertly hidden in the background, I wished for more of their flavour in there.

smoked ling cod rilette, grilled sourdough, late harvest pickles

Rating: C

Notes: I dont' remember the ling cod being particularly smoky, just that it was overly salty. The picked vegetables were a nice counterbalance to that and the mustard seeds added another dimension. The sourdough bread was the pooper of the dish - way too hard, dry and excessively chewy.

Braised spiced beef (addition to the dineout menu)

Rating: D

Notes: Unsure if it was brisket or shank but it was very dry and chewy. Luckily the mash had some moisture in it otherwise finishing this dish would be murder. Flavour was bland and repetitive; it lacked any bold spices or engaging acidity.

pudding chomeur, caramelized pears, whip

Rating: D

Notes: very plain and boring. The cake was rough and basic. The whip on top was lukewarm and only added heaviness to the dish. Did they forget the caramelized pears on the dish? Likely, but even if they didn't; they didn't add anything.

Juniper is Shaun Layton's new cocktail bar/restaurant on Keefer St, joining Keefer bar and Bao Bei on one the best streets for drinking in Vancouver. Shaun left L'Abattoir to open a new bar which focuses on Gin and Tonics, the current rage in Spain and Italy. There are also great inventive cocktails at Juniper. Our favorite was the Wing sang sour with malt whisky, lemon, toasted black sesame, ginger, mezcal, egg white. This drink reminded me of the black sesame ball chinese dessert and was the best cocktail I've had in recent memory. The pistacchio daiquiri with rum, pistacchio, buttermilk, lime was delicious but perhaps a bit delicate for my tastes. If you stop by after dinner, you can't go wrong with the smokey Meat Hook (rye, house vermouth, maraschino, Ardbeg 10) or meditation-worthy Mr Bava (Bourbon, SOV Amaretto, Cocchi americano, aromatic bitters, Picard). Although I didn't sample the food, I am sure that the Pacific Northwest-style plates are stellar given Layton's background. Props to the awesome bartender Harry Dosanj for mixing some wonderful drinks.

Ambiance (8/10) Like the feel of the place, especially the bar. We sat in a felt-lined booth, which was cozy and comfortable.
Drinks (8/10) Really enjoyed my cocktail (The Brit - cucumber gin, black pepper and tonic). The pepperiness went well with the charcuterie, and I loved that they poured the tiny bottle of tonic at the table. Solid.

Charcuterie (7/10) Our party split some charcuterie, which was good. Pickled vegetables (which I assume they do in-house) were delicious. Really nice flavour from the pâté, though I found the texture to be a bit soft. I'd order this again.

Mussels (8.5/10) Mussels were great. Anything with boar bacon is great.

Gnocchi (8/10) Gnocchi with hazelnuts and sage was probably my favourite combination of flavours for the whole meal. I could definitely eat this again. Pan frying the gnocchi gave them great colour, but didn't do much in terms of texture.

Black cod (2/10) Unfortunately, this dish was a disaster. I would've given the restaurant a much higher rating overall, had this dish been better. It just didn't work. If I'm remembering everything correctly, it was perfectly prepared fish (bravo), with what I think was preserved lemon on top, served on a bed of lemon curd amongst grilled endive, duck fat potatoes and sea asparagus. The duck fat potatoes were delicious. The sea asparagus was delicious. The fish was outstanding. But bitter endive with sweet lemon curd... with grilled fish? When eaten with the preserved lemon, the preserved lemon was all I could taste. Totally overwhelmed the fish. Disappointing.

Overall, worth a try. I'll go back in six months, maybe. The restaurant is still brand new, and I'm sure they'll improve with time.
