Review Sal Y Limon - Vancouver

Ok..we are semi regulars here. Repeat customers. HOWEVER...WHY?..WHY TACO GODS? WHY!!!? beef tacos..amazing as usual. Fish tacos? Where's THE FISH??? Just look at the photo. The salsa container is a tiny container. THE FISH piece hardly much larger than that container!. Come ON Saly! Customer pays for FISH give them FISH..not this tease of two small bites per taco. SUPREMELY underwhelmed we got shortchanged on the fish amount in the fish tacos. NOT COOL at the ALREADY rich prices we pay to eat at your place. We expect better from you Saly!!p.s..look at my last photo..it's fish taco from TheFishCounter on Main..now THAT'S a fish taco people! The fish piece is bigger than the corn tortia!!

Always a fave spot for mexican food in Vancouver! So glad they have more locations now! The food is amazing as always but my fave are always the tacos - Al pastor, carne salsa and the fish are always perfect! Wasn't too busy for lunch today but you dine in or takeout so it's quiet convenient. Make sure you try the horchata or the coffe+horchata they're so good! My only warning is that the parking lot here is tiny so try to find parking in the neighborhood and just walk to it!

Ordered takeout. Vegetarian burrito, extra spicy and a burrito bowl. No utensils in the bag (which I put on the order) so I won’t know how the burrito bowl is until I get home. No spice in my extra spicy burrito, pretty much barely any flavour at all. Underwhelming to say the least. I’ll never go back, not with choices like Tacofino around.

Best and freshest Mexican food I've had outside of Mexico and California. Super friendly staff and beautiful decor.
Maddie Cruz
I wish I took a better angle of the burrito to show that it was 80% cabbage, some rice, meat and beans. I was basically only tasting cabbage. Literally any fast food burrito would beat this and for a cheaper price. The ceviche was very disappointing. I paid $8.50 for a half filled container and three tostadas. There was barely any seafood and like what someone else has said, it was just tomatoes and onions.

So very, very good! Very generous burritos and delicious guacamole! Super taste, great choices! We look forward to coming back and dining at the restaurant. We had pick up and it was packaged professionally and warm when we got it home. Quick , easy and such great people ! Looking forward to dining in and having a beer and trying more from your menu. Why have we not been here sooner???

Used to be very good restaurant. Now there’s a huge decline in quality. The tacos are overfilled, soggy and it seems they use canned pineapples on their Al Pastor. Adios.

The food is great as always bur customer service really poor, the cashier in the front is like a robot she said that same line to all the customers, for here or to go , she can say how are you? How is your day going, what can I get you today, welcome to sal and Limon but noooo same line before she even say hi

Delicious but very inconsistent product. The three times i’ve been I’ve ordered the same thing and gotten something different each time. First time was the best burrito I’ve ever had, ever. Hands down But then the next time it was wrapped the wrong way so all the meat was at one end and all the cabbage and sauces were at the other. Pretty big mistake on a burrito and not great to eat tbh. This time there doesn’t seem to be any cheese or the sauces in it and i had one bite that i had to spit out because it was literally 7 big slices of pockled jalepeno and nothing else. No salsa it seems? Could see tomato in it last times..... I get people make things differently but these have been three VERY different burritos. All tasty though except for the one that was wrapped the wrong way and the stack of jalepenos. Had I not had mt initial experience I wouldn’t have come back but the first one was sooooo good! It was odd too cause it was while they were really busy and the mistakes have been while they were slow. Fast service (maybe too fast with the mistakes?). Self serve limes and delicious hot sauces. If they made it so I could actually know what to expect when I order I would give it six stars. Edit: went back again wosrt one yet. Just a mess, not wrapped tight at all and all rice and beans and literally no cabbage. The burrito isn’t even fully wrapped. Instead of round it’s like they folded it in half like a cross between a quesadilla and a burrito. This isn’t because it was too full either. And the cheese i paid extra for is in a giant ball at one end of the burrito..... It’s just a loose sloppy piece of shit tbh. 4 for 4 with wildly different products received. Dunno if i’ll go here again now. With some portion control and proper training I’d have come here all the time.

I wrote a review on Sal Y Limon three years ago when we first tried this place, so I thought I’d write a revisit post. We’ve been here countless times since my first post!

My daughter placed a phone order, to be picked up. It was a birthday order. I went to pick it up and it was chaos outside, no staff member to direct people to which lineup. After 30 minutes I got inside. The guy on cash asked me for my “number”. I told him I wasnt given a number but I had a name. He gestured to the bags of food and said I needed a number. I told him to forget it, as he was so rude, went home and phoned. The person who picked up the phone hung up on me. This restaurant is offering 50 percent off to health care workers, and treated me like crap. We ordered from Las Tortas and had our order delivered within 30 minutes. So long, Soly Limon. What a disappointment. Your neighbour, Lyndsay.

Heard lots of good chatter about the Mexican food here. Unfortunately I wasn't too impressed with my burrito as the shrimp was overcooked. Flavours in general were good. Burrito portions were more than sufficient. Quick service style where you order and pay for the food first and they will bring the food to you. Go early as seats fill up quick.

Best tacos, burritos and quesadillas I’ve had outside Mexico, which we go to every year.

We come here for dinner as a family 2-3/month. Staff are friendly, their operations are sustainable and food is fantastic, flavour full and reasonably priced. Highly recommend

I’ve been looking forward to trying Sal y Limón in Vancouver for quite some time. Literally translated to “salt and lemon”, I think it’s been all of the pictures of their tacos in social media that’s been driving my obsession. And as with most obsessions, I might have hyped myself a bit too much.

One of the best burrito spots in Vancouver. So amazing. It’s the real deal. Be prepared to wait occasionally but damn it’s worth the wait. Only wish there was one in Hastings Sunrise area

• located along Kingsway close to Mount St. Joseph hospital; also where Bale sandwiches is
• parking is extremely challenging in this area, I suggest to park on the side streets and just walk towards this place
• there always a line up in this resto so get ready to order what you want so it will be swift
• I love the fact that they have HORCHATA, my favourite drink. Traditionally made with rice milk, sugar & cinnamon. It comes in 2 flavours here: Cinnamon and Coconut. I have yet to try the Coconut, but will do next time
• Nachos: its huge, good for 2-3 people to share. It is good but I preder my sauces on the side and bot drizzles all over. I find this saltier than usual though. I would order the Jalapeños on the side too, its a bit salty for me
• Torta, Carne Asada: pretty good! I love the soft bun, flavour of the beed that is perfectly cooked and not overcooked. Again, I would probably ask the Jalapeños separately as it makes my torta saltier
• Super Veggie Burrito: super good, huge: I suggest to share as I don’t have that large capacity lol
• sauces from mild to spiciest available by the window, try not to waste a lot, just get what you need
• the place is packed, theres a kid’s play area which is a nice touch.
• service is good and fast

I enjoyed my meal. It wasn’t as outstanding as I had hoped but, not a place I would avoid either. Decent burrito. Good guacamole and salsa.

Very good food, affordable prices with a bustling ambiance. Ordered the spicy pork quesadilla and it was not only cheesy but the pork was marinated in lovely spices so everything had a nice balance of flavors.
Also, ordered a beef burrito to go and it did not disappoint the next day. The burrito is huge and packed with delicious spiced beef slices, rice, beans and cabbage.

The place was busy and a order at the counter and take a number kind of place so no comment on the service. Though about organization - it would make more sense to have the cutlery and sauces all in one spot as opposed to opposite corners of the seating area, but all in all this is now my go-to Mexican place.

This is one place that I'm not worried about recommending to almost anyone! It's the trifecta of tasty, inexpensive, and quick! There really isn't a better Mexican food joint that I've been too.

I normally order the burritos and the tacos but when I venture into anything else I'm also happy with what I get. The chips and guac are also a safe bet. They have a wide variety of sauces from peanut and avocado to some mega-hot ones.

The atmosphere is nice with art on the wall and he foods good enough that there are always some people around but not too busy as to have to wait very long (if at all) for seating.

3.6/5 Taco!!! You need to try these cheese added taco. I had a beef tongue taco, the taste was so good. Crispy at the edge, soft on surface. In general, it had everything I like. I'm not a big fan of taco, but this place is really good.

Phenomenally authentic Mexican food with vibrant decor.

Great tacos at a reasonable price. They have a huge selection of salsa you can add to your tacos. You can dine in or take out and it is a casual dining place - makes it very family friendly.

Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had!! Rivals my favourite go-to Mexican place in New West. Parking is a challenge! So many different sauce options- for free! Friendly and quick service. I'll be back!

Alas, I am back – but on the other side of the country, for now. I recently relocated to Toronto (like 6 days ago recently) and have spent the majority of the summer trying to put these plans into motion and get all the odds and ends of my life sorted out before taking off. Now that I’m here in the 6ix and feeling a bit more settled (although still searching for an apartment – Thank God for Air BnB). I figured I would finally … FINALLY … bang out the last blog post on Vancouver eats that I had in the archives.

Sal Y Limon is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Vancouver. Located on the corner between Kingsway and Fraser – across from Osteria Savio Volpe and Matchstick Coffee Roasters. This unassuming restaurant offers hearty burritos, tortas, tacos, quesadillas, huaraches, taquitos and more. Aside from the constant line up, this Mexican cantina is spacious. It is lively, welcoming and casual. There is even a kid play area for your littles.
AC
I didn't expect it's a self serve restaurant but it turned out okay. Line up at the front and grab the menu yourself to order. Lots of choices. Ordered 4 tacos, 1 burritos, 2. rice and 2 beers for the two of us. You then find a table and wait for your food. (They give u a number to put on the table.). Grab plastics cutlery, napkins and different sauces by yourself. Food was great. After your finished your meal then you return dirty plates to the station and threw away the rest of the paper container and plastics cutlery.
A side note: Nothing to complain beside they should consider to use reusable cutlery to protect our earth.
Fiona
Cheap tacos! Regular tacos are around $2.50ish. The specialty ones like shrimp or fish tacos are a bit more around $3, still a great deal. Love their horchata!! The churros have a chocolate center and they're HUGE. Enough for 2 or 3 people to share. This place is always busy. You order at the counter first then find a table to sit. If you're coming in a big group, you should arrive earlier to reserve some seats for your group.
Adrian Tavares
The food here is amazing. I stopped for a take away lunch during work and the wait wasn't too bad considering how busy they get. The shimp tortas is a 5/5 for me!

Translation or pictures please. Huaraches are ugly sandals in my world.
Don't order the rice and beans - there's a weeks worth of salt in them.

Tacos are good, as soon as I can figure out what other items are, I may try them too.

Great little self-serve Mexican joint tucked in the corner of Fraser and Kingsway. Lots of choices to choose from..was hard to decide!
Tried the beef, chorizo, pork & pineapple, chicken and fish tacos. For the most part they were pretty tasty but felt it was not worth it to add cheese for an additional 40 cents/taco. We ordered some without and you can't even tell the difference as you cannot even taste the cheese. The fish taco only came with a small piece of fish so that was disappointing. They offer a lot of sauces that you help yourself to which is great. The avocado and chunky salsas were delicious. Loved their tortilla soup! Tangy and tasty!

Parking is very limited here so park on the side streets.

Tacos are a food made for the gods, and sal y limon has appeased the deities themselves. Their tacos affordable, being priced at around 2-3 dollars and are jam packed with flavour. Their soft tortillas are tasty and accompany your toppings nicely. The condiments are bountiful and embody all of the levels of heat, from mild to flaming spice. They have horchata which is basically cereal milk and even have churros :O.The decor is filled with painting that exude mexican culture and the place even has a kiddie zone. I LOVE TACOS

Parking here is kind of a struggle, but the food is pretty good! my favourite would probably be the fish taco, its a must try but they have plenty of other options for everyone.

Love this place!! The food is reasonably priced, so tasty and the restaurant itself is great! Sometimes the line up can be 45 mins to get your order in, but I think its well worth the wait.

The intersection between Kingsway and Fraser is home to many popular Vancouver eateries. But one Mexican restaurant, Sal Y Limon, draws the crowds so much that they are famous for their line-ups. One lazy afternoon this past summer, my family and I ventured to Sal Y Limon for some hearty Mexican fare.

Very efficient and friendly service. Lots of choice on the menu and ways to customize your order. Great atmosphere and very family friendly. Food was good but not great.

Such great Tacos. Decent price and great quality. My partner felt there was too much onion, but for me it was great. Good selection of Mexican beers. The iced cold Modelo Especial went perfectly.

○order first and sit down/ full service not applicable
○good food/ my favourites are beef tongue taco and shrimp taco. I like the diabla sauce/ personally I think they got the best taco, haven't tried other dishes yet
○reasonable price for portion and quality/ I can easily get full off 2 tacos
○family friendly/ parking is definitely a hassle though
○would I go back? Yes when I crave taco

This place was quite full Saturday night. This is the kind of place where you line up first to order, get a number, and find your own seat and place the number on it.

There's a lot a choices on their menu. Except I think their vegetarian options could be better. I tried the grilled beef, beef tongue, and roasted lamb tacos. All of them come with onions and cilantro. The roasted lamb had the most flavour and was tender. The only bad thing was that I found tiny bits of bone in mine. The beef tongue was tender too but lacked a bit of flavour. The grilled beef was dry and tough for me. I wish they had marinated it in some kind of sauce. There are a lot of sauces that you can choose from and serve yourself. My favourite was the avocado one. Some of them were a bit too spicy for me. I also ordered an original horchata. This was my highlight of my meal. It was sweet and flavourful and had just the right amount of spices. This is something I would come back for. The lady asked me if I wanted the coconut horchata, so maybe I'll give that a try next time.

Overall, I was kind of disappointed with this place. Maybe it was my choices but I was expecting more. I would be willing to give it another try with a different item.
Stupidweeaboo
Amazing! They have a huge selection on their menu and the prices are so good. Parking can be a little difficult, and you might have to wait in line a bit, but it was honestly so worth it. Didn't give me the runs. 5/5
Joe
Amazing taco @ low prices. They have a lot different sauces that you could try. Extremely fast service. Will definitely recommend to others.

Booths? Half-booth along some walls.
When I dined: 3pm on a Tuesday
Noisy? Not really
Candies with your bill? No
Lives up to it’s name? There was salt on the table. I didn’t see any limes. Where are they?

Mexican food! This is the kind of place where you order at the counter and they give you a number on a tiny flagpole, then you find a table for yourself. In fact most of the restaurant is self serve with sauces, cutlery, water, etc. They have a Taco Wars best taco award on the front counter.

I ordered four tacos – beef tongue, slow roast chicken, slow roast lamb and pulled pork. Cheese on your tacos is extra (to the tune of 25-40 cents) and I decided to opt out. Next time I’ll add the cheese. How long should it take to prepare 4 tacos? It wasn’t busy when I visited but it still took 15 minutes. That seems like 5 minutes too long.

Horchata is available and it comes in different varieties, including rum-chata! I had the coconut horchata and it was very nice, if a bit small.

The size of the restaurant is decent. The tables are small…and too close together in places. The ambience was fine. The music was mostly but not exclusively Mexican and it was at a reasonable volume. For some reason they had baseball on the TV above the counter. The decor is a lot of Day of the Dead paintings and wooden folk art. There is a children play area/stage but luckily there were no kids while I was eating, since the table I chose was directly adjacent.

Most of my tacos were delicious, but I would skip the beef tongue. I will definitely go back and try some more selections from the menu. And this time I’ll find those pesky limes!

Biggest Rave: I got 10 cents off because the clerk didn’t have change. Woohoo! At first I didn’t see the selection of sauces at the back. It’s not a bad place for them (clears up the front area) but I wish someone had pointed them out to me, as I had to search. There were nine sauces and all the ones I tried were delicious.

Biggest Rant: The lineup to order is super awkward. As soon as you enter the restaurant there’s a little cubby hole to the right where they’ve cordoned off a line, but as soon as you get through the door you’re already blocking the line. The first time I came in, I saw the queue and got in it, and I was the only one. Before I was even acknowledged by the staff, a pack of four crowded in right behind me and I immediately felt like I was at an Iggy Pop concert (note: I’ve never been to an Iggy Pop concert). I browsed the menu but it wasn’t an enjoyable feeling and I fled the scene, coming in a couple weeks later to try again.

Some of the best tacos I have ever eaten. All the salsas were awesome. Hot one was hot. Wish we had a place like this in Calgary. So fresh.

Something’s not right here…Sal y Limón in “Fraserhood” has been around since 2012 and has perpetual lineups, but reviews of them are all over the place. Some gushing praise, some bitter disappointment. I guess it’s expected with a place so freaking popular, that every Tom’s Harry Dick is gonna get on Z*mato or Welp and wax lyrical about those big burritos. Here’s my take on this place after eating seven tacos.
Justine
Their tacos are so authentic it makes you feel like your in Mexico. The art on the walls is beautiful and some of them are for sale. The horchata is amazing and they also have a rum version. Take out isn't as good as eating in.

First off, let me say the burrito I had tasted decent. Sadly, it was a chore ordering it.I went in there on a Saturday night, and maybe that was the problem. Super busy. I ordered a pulled pork burrito with cheese, guacamole and sour cream. I also very clearly asked for it without cabbage or jalapenos. The waitress confirmed this.So when it comes I immediately see cabbage on it, so back it goes after explaining to the waitress (2 more times) what I wanted. By the time it gets back to my table my friend is almost finished his meal.Lots of cheese, but the tiniest amount of sour cream and guacamole I've ever seen- and they charge extra for guac. There was a small amount of guac on 1/3 of 1/2 of the burrito. And the sour cream wasn't much better. Lots of rice, and not much pulled pork.It tasted FANTASTIC!! but the preparation looked rushed and the ingredients lacking.Too bad it failed so miserably in the service/presentation department.I may try the place again, but never again during dinner n a weekend.

When this placed was a small and humble establishment, they had really good carne asada—juicy and flavourful. I went back recently with my Mexican husband, and we ordered the carne asada tacos. This time, it was bland and dry. We were very disappointed as we had fond memories of this place when we drove by. Now we rather make our own carne asada at home.

This particular gem of a Mexican restaurant is located in Mount Pleasant. Along with some interesting Mexican fare are a number of sauces and some refreshing drinks. WARNING: The 'Diabla' sauce will blow you out of your socks, so be forewarned!

It would have been nice to have metal forks and knives because some of the food is very difficult to cut with the plant-plastic utensils, although at least those are biodegradable.

The only question on my mind in coming here was "does it live up to the hype? Hell yes it does ! This is one of those gems that I live for. Quality food that you literally can't get anywhere else. And a great atmosphere to boot. The real magic here is in the sauces they're all amazing and you have to try each one. BTW if you don't like spicy food, don't bother coming. They don't want your kind here. If you are one of thrse people you can also do the rest of us a favour and stay home and eat mayo on bread. Leave places like this for those who can really appreciate it.

半自助式墨西哥餐廳

Sal y Limon這名字發音是“Sal E Leemon”,譯意為salt and lime。

Beef Torta Ahogada $8.75 (是友人推介,餐牌上沒有的)

Super Sal y Limon Huarache $10.00
在墨西哥拖鞋烤餅放上雞肉、牛肉、墨西哥腸和芝士等材料,味道不錯但下面的烤餅比較韌,切開也要費點勁 (2.5/5分)

Pavo Con Tocino y Queso Torta $8.50

Queso y Barbacoa de Cordero Quesadilla $6.50
這名稱又長又難念,簡稱為Lamb Quesadilla。是用墨西哥玉米餅加入烤羊肉片和芝士再放到熱板上略為烤香,真有點像上海餐館子的牛肉捲餅 (2.5/5分)

Best Mexican food in Vancouver. Authentic as it gets in Vancouver (I am from Mexico). Great taste, variety all at a reasonable price. Always look forward to eating here especially the tortas. Keep up the great work Sal y Limon !!!!

I came here for lunch recently and loved the lamb torta sub. The tacos were not that great but will certainly be back for the torta sub. It's juicey, tasty, good sized portion and hits the spot!

This place is a pleasant surprise. Definitely gives off the fast food ambiance which is not a bad thing since the service is faster. Tacos are a pretty good price at $2.25 each, it definitely doesn't need the cheese on it. My favorite was the pulled pork. I love the large amount of salsa options and I definitely liked the Chipotle salsa as a nice added flavor. It's a nice place to go back to for a quick bite to eat.

Been to many tacos places around Vancouver and this is still my favourite. It used to be more of a hole in the wall, but it has now been renovated and expanded, which is great because it’s much more comfortable to eat and hang out in. The prices have also gone a little higher from what I first remember but still the cheapest tacos I’ve found so far. I’ve tried most of their meat toppings and all are flavourful. I also like all the different sauces and salsas you can add.

Not a good experience at all. My boyfriend ordered the fish tacos which looked and tasted good. I ordered their cheese and pork quesadillas and they were not that great.. they looked alright at first but the taste was not so great. The pork was really rough and I literally had ONE small piece of pineapple.. ordered their tortilla chips and literally waited 20 minutes for them even after I finished my meal. Asked to cancel the order 10 mins in from waiting for the chips but the manager kept saying that it was "coming" and refused to cancel it. Dissapointed and won't come back for sure.

I have been meaning to come here for ages. Heard so much about it both through friends and zomato posts. I got three tacos. A lamb, a pork, and a chicken. All were great. I wish I got a burrito, but I wasn't hungry enough. Next time! This place was super busy FYI. Good luck finding a seat!

PS. They serve beer.
Chunky
Good flavour and atmosphere. I found myself wishing there was an option to have fries as a side. I found that meat was used sparingly but given the cost of meat these days it's hardly a surprise. Overall a good place for a quick tasty bite.

The Burrito Vegetariana is to die for! Delicious! Since I discovered Sal y Limon and went sooooo many times. Everything tastes great and the quality is very consistent. Also, top bang for the buck ☺

Ok the line up was huge here and I gotta figure out why. When I finally reached the front door I could hear bachatta music. Then I grab a menu and to my surprise cheap tacos. 2ish each, add 50 cent for cheese. Alright so I asked the cashier to give me his best. I got a slow roast pork and the fried fish taco and
...Oh my dear lord the fresh ingredients and that fish taco shut the front door... Best I say best in the city. This will forever be my taco place. I wish I got take out here for superbowl, just a few days ago. I'm definitely coming back! Service just amazing and fast! Huge kitchen team! Lots of art work on the wall. Positive experience and amazing lunch. Dude 6 bucks for my two tacos and I'm full.

Update: April 5 2016
I've had the tacos, now let's see what else they have. Gotta experience the menu a little more, take a risk right?

The Carne asada burrito is HUGE! This is definitely a share item. It is delicious!
The churros are awsome, they drizzle chocolate sauce all over it... Dam...

Honestly. There are about five restaurants in Vancouver that seriously sing to my foodie heart and this one just joined the ranks. You cannot get any more simple, authentic and delicious than this place for Mexican food in Vancouver. You can seriously taste the love on their food. Excellent prices, amazing homemade sauces and family owned delicious recipes. What else can you ask for! The horchata is a must!
TessaNickel
I love this place! Quick lunch,
Super fresh, and amazing Mexican. The closest I have found to the tacos I had at a shack on the Baja! My favourite taco place in Vancouver.
Greatfoodmediocrecompany
Sal Y Limon, I’ve heard so much about this place and finally I decided to give it a try. There’s always a line up here when I glance in from my favourite Vietnamese sandwich shop, so I decided to get there around 5. I’d suggest the same thing to anyone who wants to go here, the seating is pretty limited.
Lower Mainland Muncher
I absolutely love the horchata drink. It's nothing like I've tasted before. There isn't a lot of meat inside the burrito but the rice has enough flavor to make up for it. Shrimp tacos are my favorite. The carne asada had too much onions though.
Nicasegovia5
This is mexican junk food, I would not recommend it. If you could walk in to the kitchen you would know wht I mean. Keep away. Thera are other mexican restaurants in town that are much better. Thank you.

We were lucky to get to Sal Y Limon right before a massive lunch line-up formed, and with good reason; fresh ingredients, generous portions and a ready supply of beer make for the perfect place to take in a taco or burrito and watch the world go by. The fish taco is especially noteworthy - battered and deep-fried, crunchy and delicious.
Kristia Van Heerden
Tacos? Yes, please. Expect fresh, crunchy ingredients, flavourful salsas, a chilled-out atmosphere and Dos Equis. The burritos looked fat and gratifying, but I settled for vegetarian and portobello tacos and a beer. Not a terrible way to spend a Wednesday afternoon. Vegetarians are taken care of, although you'll be disappointed if you were hoping for a hearty bean dish. Jian Reis

Not worth the hype. I've had better tacos on Denman street. The beef Taco was quite good, but I also got the chicken Taco (dry and fairly tasteless), and my Chorizo Taco was God awful. It was red and undercooked-looking. It had no taste, like cold leftover ground ham from being on a pizza...except it tasted sort of cold. That was the last of the 3 tacos I ate and it left a disgusting after taste. The good? The beef Taco and the sweet diabla salsa (very hot!!)...visited here with Tam D

The bad? Service -- it took us from 5:30pm to 6:15pm to get 3 tacos and a burrito. We timed it because we were super hungry and needed to make the 19 bus after food.

Food is meh (honestly I've had better service and fresher tasting food from fast food joints). But, maybe it's because I'm brutally honest when I review things (not afraid to admit I like fast food too!).

If the service was better, they'd have a 3.0 / 5, but making us wait 45 mins to scoop meat into a tortilla (there were 4 small orders ahead of us)...not cool. Not going back!

Oh my god, best burrito! Easily as big as my face. Really good soup of the day and their tacos are fresh and tasty. Lots of options and clearly a hotspot as the seats are all filled all the time.

Yup. Top notch. Reasonable. Large servings. Great tasting. Fresh. A new favorite.

I have to say the same thing again because a review has to be 140 characters so...

Yup. Top notch. Reasonable. Large servings. Great tasting. Fresh. A new favorite!

Sal Y Limon is a nice bright place but gets crowded very fast. They have you place your order at the counter, give you a number, and then the servers bring your food to you later. When we went, the line was super long, and you had to wait for at least 7 minutes, before you could reach the counter.

My friend and I decided to order together so that we could try each others' dishes. We got slow roasted pork huarache, chicken and lamb tacos, grilled beef burrito with a soup and horchata.

I had never had horchata or huarache before, but man, were they amazing or what? Huarache was juicy, cheesy, full of toppings, and the pork was perfect. Horchata was cool, sweet and well who doesn't like cinnamon? It also offset the spicy sauces well.
Maybe instead of being the best taco place, it should be best huarache and burrito, because I didn't find the tacos that great - they were a bit on the drier side. They do have a great collection of salsa and other sauces, but I had a hard time finding one that was not fire-breathing-hot (it's the avocado one, in case you're wondering).
The soup that day was vegetable and chicken soup, and usually I wouldn't expect SOUP to be much to write about, but SYL surprised me here: it was one of the best soups I've ever had. Hearty, chunky and well spiced.

Now on burritos - they're HUGE and so full of the flavors of fresh ingredients. By the time we finished the huarache and the tacos, we were beginning to think we had over-ordered and ended up packing half of the burrito.

Over all, excellent place, would really like to come back for more huarache and horchata ;)

I ordered 7 tacos and only got 6, so that says something about the service. Overall, they seemed a bit dry and lacked in flavor, but I do like the variety of sauces they have, especially the chipotle one. The vegeteriano one I got tasted like cold salad, which I don't recommend getting, but the pierna and pollo tasted okay. Overall, I think I was just bitter from the long wait and the disappointment.

Better taco places in town. The food wasnt too memorable. Hence the reason I would only go back if there isnt a line up, but wouldnt wait to order.
This beats La Taqueira hands down!!! Their Vegetarina burrito was soooo yummy! I also had a side of their home made chips and tried five of their sauces (gotta try the sweet diablo!). The burrito was packed with rice, panela cheese, onions, zucchini and was so big I only ate half of it. The home made chips were very crunchy and full of the potato flavour but a bit on the oily side. Tip: go during the late afternoon, when there isn't as much of a lunch or dinner rush and the lineup is out the door!

I tasted the best burrito ever! I had their carne asada burrito and I was shocked at how massively big it was and how fresh the veggies and meat tasted. Wow! Loved every bite and I really had to work on the second half of the burrito because the first half was filling enough. Will need to come back to try an assortment of tacos. Amazing food, glad they expanded, lovely people.

Delicious authentic Mexican food. The line could get really long and the restaurant could get really loud when it's packed. We always get the al pastor, fish and carne asada. The cherry on top is the multiple different kinds of sauce. There is something for everyone. Go here for the food. It is not in the nicest area but good food and good value for money.

I've never had a bad meal here, the line ups have been much more reasonable since they expanded-- but no matter the line up, the food is so incredible that we never care. I love the flavour profiles they create, their house made salsas are incredible!! Love how they're willing to help you figure out what you don't understand on the menu, such friendly owners:) our absolute fav
Goodmealhunter
Mustang Sal Y you are top notch. This place never ceases to delight me. The wait is worth it and when you think a taco's just a taco, you take one bite and remember that their flavours are so traditionally good they're next level.

... And 3 words of wisdom for you... get the churros.

Tasty quesadillas and tortas. This was my first torta experience and it will definitely not be my last. Lots of vegetarian options and delicious guacamole. Plenty of seating in a fast casual setting.

The place was packed at 8pm on a Sunday night. No wonder, the food was great. New favourite restaurant when coming in to Vancouver. I enjoyed my beef burrito. My wife liked the tacos and is going to try the Hurachas next time.
Sal y Limón has a basically clean space but once it gets busy (around 6pm, maybe peaking at around 7pm or so) clearing tables becomes slower. This is in part due to the mess people tend to make eating the finger foods. Tons of used napkins all over the place. Clean-up is actually not so bad to do yourself, so if you need to secure several seats together, you can clear the tables yourself (there are tubs for dishes near the self-serve cutlery station) and wipe down the top with napkins.

Lamb tacos?! Sauces galore? When we heard this place served the best tacos, we were a little sceptical of the hype. Wrong. Sal Y Limon definitely lived up to the reviews. We are totally coming back for more!!!

I am going to be completely honest here - I have no photos of my lunch because it looked too good to wait. And we're talking about me (aka picture fanatic). Seriously this place is amazing. Not only do they have amazing service, but their tacos are incredible. My favourite was the deep fried prawn taco with salsa. And when I can say that a place has good guac (avocados are basically my religion) that's saying something. Recommend to ANYONE, ANYTIME, ALWAYS.
@annanguyen_
Why I love this place: cheap authentic mexican food! I love the deep fried fish taco 👌 so good!
Would I come back: yes!!
Would I recommend it to others: yes, however prepare for long wait times. Hopefully wait times are resolved since they expanded

After reading much of the positive reviews and blog. My interest peaked until I had to go and check out this place. I do love my tacos and hot sauce. As most had mentioned ... there was a line up. Line up usually means the place has good food or cheap mediocre food.
The wait for the tacos took over 40 mins.
They forgot my order.
Food was cold and salty.
Hot sauce was quite bland.
The Irony of believing in social media.

Hey guys! Welcome to a review of Mexican food in Vancouver. Today we have a visit to Sal Y Limon. Do the traditional pinche style tacos here promote a fiesta or is this just a spicy mess? Read on to find out. Team Tastic came here for an early dinner and I ordered four tacos ($2.25 each) as follows:

Atmosphere was fun and lively and the staff friend and helpful! The food was good, very nice! Liked the huaraches - first time I've had them. Very busy so come early! Thy have this Diably sauce - oooh soo hot! I am still sweating after a little taste. The lamb tacos were good too!

Good food. Service can be slow at times, but definitely worth the wait, some of the best mexican food in Vancouver.
B_b_babe
Amazing food, best tacos in town. Not only that but the waitors and waitresses are amazing, kind, comes and clean up the tables when its done and cluttered in the middle of the meal, respectful and proper. Always coming back.

Terrible service from day one. I had been going there for over 1 year, simple reasons, I like Mexican food and I live close by ( so I like to support local new business ).. from my first experience up to today, you can clearly get the idea that they kitchen system is terrible. The food can take over 30 minutes sometimes. I had owned restaurants and there is no way that kind of food ( semi-prepared Mexican food ) can take that long.. My last experience was the worse of all.. I called to place and order for pick up and was told they were busy so my order wold take 40 mins.. the owner sensed my frustration and he said.. "It's a restaurant, food takes time" and hung up on me .. so I called "Los Cuervos" and for a very similar order ( 4 Tacos ) , they said it will take 4 minutes.. and It did.. bottom line.. they know what they are doing and Sal y Limon doesn't ... yes, their pastor tacos are ( were ) decent.. but I'd rather go to other locations where the service is good and consistent ( trained staff, quick service, good food ) .. or even.. cook my own pastor tacos at home .. which are a lot better than theirs

Forget about Taco Bell and Taco Time. That's not Mexican food and I couldn't be happier than Vancouver has finally started to get some more authentic Mexican cuisine these last few years. Sal y Limon may not look the most impressive on the outside (random strip mall near a laundromat) or on the inside for that matter, but the tacos here are both amazing and an amazing value. The salsa bar is great too.

Ordered the fish taco and the al pastor (pineapple pork) and thought it was amazing. Incredible price and tons of super spicy sauces to choose from. The side chips as an add on were addictive.

Also ordered the huaraches , which I didn't enjoy as much since it has a thicker wrap. Sauce and flavour was also lacking for the Marina special that I ordered.

Overall I enjoyed the food and will definitely be back!

Quality going down. I've been here before in the past when they first opened and they were amazing - quality was up to par and the food tasted busy. But now.. I get it. It's busy here, and there's constant line ups and they're probably having difficultly with keeping up with the training standards of their new staff but I was super disappointed to see that my tacos were just gross.. I could barely eat them. Lifeless, soggy, oily and basically everything that makes this place any other taco joint now. Sad to say, but I think I'd prefer tacofino or La Tacqueria now.

Untrained staff have no idea what they're doing. Sorry to say but trying to phone in an order and speaking to someone who doesn't know English is frustrating to say the least. The person first asked me to phone back in 20 minutes because they're not open yet (even though it's after 11:30 - their normal store opening time). I phoned back and tried to place my order. I believe she understood but of course the order was lost by the time I got there. So I had to repeat myself all over again and they still didn't get it. Needless to say I still had to wait. What a waste of time. This place is busy and just not worth it when there are plenty of other good Mexican restaurants available. Learn to hire and train staff properly before putting them on the line!

Meh! Huarache was dry and tasteless, salsas were ok but nothing special, I tried them all but none got my taste buds to say uuh! So good I want more.. Mm nah!

Not impressed at all. Went there last weekend, walked up to the counter to place the order and the first thing you see near the register is a tip jar, I do like to leave a tip, but not until AFTER I have had my meal. The woman that took our order was very abrupt...bordering on rude. When we paid for the food, she walked away without giving us our change...when our food was ready we were quite shocked at the small portions as well as the poor presentation. after eating....we were both still very hungry, but it was all we could do to actually eat the food. The only thing I can honestly say is.I would NEVER go back, not refer anyone there. I can't believe they are listed in Vancouver's top 7 Mexican restaurants!!! Disgusting!
Jim
Very average mexican place. As most of the mexican places in Vancouver, this one seems to be the same; plain and uninspired food.
Too bad as there seems to be a lot of potential, but if you crave for authentic Mexican food this is not the place for it. Try El Caracol from Victoria Drive, a way better choice.
Jamesto41
Twice in a week!. Since last time i been here they renovated the place. still pretty tight space. Dont remember the food being as good as these last 2 times! Had tacos and was super satisfied both times. Fish taco taste like a tastier filet-o -fish with fresh taco ingredients. Pulled pork solid, beef tongue solid. Guac was good price at $2. Lotsa sauces to chose from, Diablo gives a nice KICK to the tacos! Friends got the burritos and they had only positive things to say. Not that I care, but all the hipsters have invaded this restaurant! Always thought this was more of a shady area but times have changed. Prepare to not have seats as this place is busy. Very friendly staff and awesome selection of drinks. Mexican coke, vanilla coke, cherry coke, jarritos, horchatas...

Not amazing but.... I like the small business atmosphere and simple food. Plus it's CHEAP

This food is not Authentic Mexican Cuisine.. I am a native of Southern Californian living very close to the Mexican Boarder. I grew up on Mexican food and absolutely love it. My work sent me to Vancouver, BC and I long for Mexican / South American Cuisine.

My favorite is chiles rellenos. There is no place in Vancouver that offers this dish. I still have not been able to find a place that offers carnitas. Nor, crispy tacos. Tacos with a hard shell, not soft. Though, I do love both.

Sal Y Limon is no where near Authentic Mexican food, much less South American Cuisine in general. They maybe, maybe, maybe a bit closer to the chain in Southern California (a step up from a McDonald's) to Baja Fresh. But even the Baja Fresh chain of restaurants is extremely better than Sal Y Limon. Actually 100% better. Although I made the comparison with Baja Fresh because I can kind of see how the Sal Y Limon may want to expand itself.

I am really confused by all the hype surrounding this Sal Y Limon hole in the wall restaurant where you have to wait in line for an hour to get food that is really not all that great. From the people standing in line, they were all really hyped up to enjoy this food and some had been to Sal Y Limon previously and were boasting about it. Personally, I just don't understand it.

This isn't to say that a hole in the wall can't have the best food in town (because these are typically my favorite places to eat), but this place is a far cry from anything Authentically Mexican / South American. And, btw, there are differences in Cuisine between South American countries.

I have never, ever had carne asada with some whacky spice put on it. It is meant to have the fresh flavor of steak grilled to perfection, and not with a bunch of whacky spices added to it. Everything should be fresh.

Fresh Tomatoes, cilantro, onion, refried beans and mexican rice with really nicely grilled steak... no spices. The spices should come from the additional salsa, the salsa with all fresh ingredients. Got absolutely NONE of this from Sal Y Limon.

There Salsa in the big squeeze bottles is horrendous at best.

Oh, my Canadian friends, if I could just take you to Southern California, or just slightly south of the boarder into Mexico, you would find out exactly what you are missing and what Vancouver is VERY MUCH in need of... Good, truly authentic Mexican food! Sal Y Limon, I'm afraid, is not it...

Tortas!. Delicious tortas - highly recommend the "mega sal y limon" torta!!! Always a line, but moves pretty quickly.

The tacos are nothing to write home about.

Wow!. Get the lamb tacos. Best taco I've had in Vancouver so far.

Great food, great atmosphere! Best Mexican in Vancouver hands down! Will go back again and again

Great burritos. I tried at least a dozen Mexican restaurants in Vancouver, and I found %99 of them to serve mediocre food. In the best case scenario you get one good dish out of three. Until I discovered Sal Y Limone. This tiny place serves big Mexican flavours. The best burrito in town. Their sauces are house-made, their rice is cooked perfectly, and the chicken (I prefer the chicken to meat burritos) is tasty.
Dee
We've eaten here lots of times but yesterday was the first time we both had crazy stomach issues.Probably will go back but not for awhile.

Quality and value. The wait is worth it. If there's a lineup, it may take a while to get your tacos but I find no one seems to mind because they know they're going to get a great taco. Pepe and his team do a great job for good value. I even had them cater a party for us and what a hit - everyone was so blown away! Can't wait for the expansion next door!
