Review Kadoya Japanese Restaurant - Vancouver

Nancy Vũ
A wonderful food! My family was so happy with food and atmosphere here. The restaurant was not so bright and new modern but food was amazing. I was arranged a table near to kitchen, so i could see a small fridge where keep ingredients for Sushi. That made me so exiting. We really loved all food that we order. You should try “deluxe sashimi, it was so fresh and amazing”. Some rolls was impressive with decorations and quality. I’m sure be back here next time with my friends and family.

This place was recommended very highly by a friend of mine, so I finally got to try it out. One word: amazing!! Downright amazing food, decent prices, superb service. If you're in the area, check it out! My favourite is their all day lunch boxes, like the one I snapped a pic of. The best deals!

Great place for japanese food. The service is really good and the prices are accessible. 🍽 we ordered miso soup which is great, and the assemble sushi platter and the double spicy roll 🍸 we ordered a hot large sake and it was delicious 🛎 the place is small so it might get crowded 🚻 Bathroom is in tha back and you might think there are no bathrooms but they are only for costumers 🅿️ There is no parking

This was the first time for me to visit this place. Sushi was very fresh with really awesome sauces. One thing specialty is all staff welcome us with smile when we come in :)👍

Oh MY GOODness!!! This place is ONE OF THE BEST IN VANCOUVER in terms of bentos. I have a descriminating taste bud.... but the food here is just irresistably delicious. The sashimi was so fresh, salad was tasty, unagi and dynamite sushi were SOOOO GOOD that I had to uhmmm yummm! The tempura, nice and crispy. The friendly owner said their chef is from a 5 star hotel and she does the sushi herself with carefull attention. Im not surprised. Hmm staff are super nice and friendly. So I can only say, WE WILL BE BACK FOR MORE! The place is small so make reservations by calling before you go.

Very pleasantly surprised by this little sushi spot! The dinner box was a great value item - tons of food for the price! Sashimi was good quality and the special rolls were all very good. Friendly staff as well!

Damn amazing place for some authentic and fresh Japanese food! The flavor is definitely one of the best ever had in Vancouver and the quality is very good considering it is delivered food. Would go to the store later instead of ordering on Uber.

We stumbled upon this magnificent restaurant by mere luck. However, WHAT A GREAT FIND! The servers are incredibly polite and always helpful! The sushi rolls came before anything else! It was so quick and delicious. We ordered the Drunken Tiger Roll, Sunset Roll and my now, personal favorite: The Queen Roll (the green one). I seriously suggest coming here and try this food.

Hands down the best sushi in Vancouver! Even my friends that are not very fond of sushi enjoy the meals here and always leave stuffed. All the combos, specialty rolls, and gyoza are delicious with excellent portions!
Irene Hugh
picked up BC roll, wild salmon, tempura, nigiri sushi combo and ebi sunomono. The quality over all are very poor on the price. Specially the worst are the BC roll and wild salmon sashimi. Only cucumber and salmon skin in the roll and no taste. Salmon is too small and not fresh. Hope they improve the quality. Also, take out containers should be recyclables. Would Not recommending.

Came back after a year and was pleased to find that the quality's just as good as I remembered. I've had a lot of sushi in my life and the quality here is as good as can be found. I appreciate restaurants that remain consistent like Kadoya. Prices are affordable so it's a good place to dine on a budget.

Fresh, delicious food with generous portion sizes. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Love their Gangster Chef roll and Salmon & Avocado roll! Healthy brown rice option is available for all rolls and nigiri.
Sarah
Pricey but delicious.

The Crazy Girl roll’s each individual piece is deep fried and lathered with sweet chilli sauce. The philly cheese, avocado & sweet chilli sauce fit well together.

The Vancouver spider roll is huge but average.

The prawn/ebi gyoza is literally stuffed with prawn & vegetable filling.

My recommendation- the prawn gyoza!

• its the typical, nothing special as I taste
• Bento box ... mediocre, server even made a mistake of what I ordered but its alright, taste the same as other restos
• the rolls were good, the special ones—- stick to those... deep fried rolls are always the best!

It's a small restaurant but the food is wonderful!! There are classic Japanese dishes as well as quite a few original items that are unique to the business. Sashimi is the freshest with huge servings. Ambiance is simple yet very welcoming and cozy.

Kadoya started a new menu a few months ago and it's become my go to restaurant on Davie Street. They added so many great special rolls and lunch boxes. They serve lunch boxes until 5pm now and you can get tempura, teriyaki, gyoza, california roll, and salad in the cheapest box all for under $10! Among the rolls, the Davie Roll and Tuna Tataki roll are my personal favourites. Servers are friendly and awesome too. You won't regret going here for sure

WORST SUSHI DELIVERY EXPERIENCE!

Ordered delivery to St. Paul's Hospital on Tuesday night Oct 24,2017. Specific instruction to deliver to the nursing station on Ward 7A was clearly written on the order. The delivery person apparently did not understand how to ask for directions while in the hospital and somehow managed to get lost on the 2nd floor; when intuitively 7A should direct him to the 7th floor.. Being late for delivery is fine, as waiting is not an issue. What is unacceptable is that apparently his lack of problem solving skills led to his own frustration, which he expressed by shouting and causing a fuss at the nursing station where nurses and other medical staff worked, to the point where the entire floor knew a fuming delivery person was here.

What's worse is the completely trashed condition the food arrived in. I've never seen a sushi delivery where all of the nigiri were flipped upside down and all their toppings spilled over. Sauce was spilled all over the bag it arrived in, and the food was squished to one side, indicating they were carried sideways. The nurse that received the order (not the intended recipient, the driver was long gone by then) reported he was delivering the food with a backpack. The competency and attitude of the delivery driver and the condition the food arrived in made this a disastrous experience and we vowed never to order from Kadoya ever again and will warn all family/friends/strangers to avoid this restaurant at all costs, as they clearly do not value quality and attention to detail.

Decent sushi spot for large quantities while maintaining right quality. Many different big cheap rolls and large sashimi portions. The tuna tataki is absolutely huge.

Inexpensive, delicious, friendly service. I come here every time I'm in Vancouver. I've been here three days, and eaten here each of those days. So good!

Kings of deep fried and chicken!
Kadoya is really good with deep fried dishes as well as chicken dishes. I highly recommend Vegetable Gyoza and Yakitori!
Other recommendations are Aburi, Salmon kama, Kings Roll, and chicken teriyaki lunch box.

Really good value and top notch food. No wonder it's so popular!

The Spicy Tuna Sashimi and Spiky Roll will make your taste buds dance!
The portions are incredible and the cost is shockingly thrifty. I would recommend
you visit no matter how far away you are!

If you're in a rush the chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu don here are amazing as well. I noticed that nearly all chicken dishes here are super tasty!

The best sushi you can find downtown. The location is convenient and the prices are very reasonable as well. The bento boxes and the sashimi are seriously worth every penny. The rolls are also pretty neat and creative. Overall a fantastic experience.

I visited last week with some of my friends and colleagues for the first time then I visited again today. Both times I had such a wonderful experience! I'll list the reasons why Kadoya is so great:
1. The prices here are super decent compared to most high quality sushi places in the lower mainland. You can actually afford a high quality meal without burning a hole in your wallet and the portions are gigantic!
2.The taste of the food is absolutely wonderful! I could see why Kadoya has won so many awards and featured on TV before as they have some very unique and fresh dishes. The spicy salmon sashimi, tempura, and specialty rolls like the snow white roll are the best!
3. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly service. It's a little small compared to other restaurants but I felt like that created a very cozy feeling and as a result, the waitresses were more attentive and quick.

If you're ever in downtown, this is the place to go for sure.

Just the best sushi experience in my life! The prices were really affordable and the food was mouthwatering! The sashimi, kings roll, and spiky roll are the best here! Definitely will be coming back!

Walked in because of the recommendations and awards stuck on the window.
Salmon sashimi - very fresh, very thickly cut
Pork gyoza - quite ordinary flavour, nothing too special about it
Unagi don - not as good as those in Japan, but I'd say quite well done for its price
Though the restaurant is in need of a renovation/refresh; tabled and menus are a bit sticky. It feels a bit cramped and has a slight weird smell when I first walked in.

Rated it 3.5 for its price/performance.

Located upstairs with a view of the ocean. Really helps you taste that sashimi a bit more.

We ordered the katsu lunch box and a Stanley park sushi roll. Both of it was delish!! I'm not much of a seafood fan, so the Stanley park was perfect at not tasting too fishy.

Snow White Roll is my fave!. Been to both locations ( Davie and also the Denman location). Went there on a Monday ( they are closed). Went back another day and wow!. Love all the variety of rolls!. Great service and everything came out super fast. My favourite roll has to be the " Snow White Roll" which has coconut shavings on it. ( Must have for me). Prices varies but definitely worth checking out their speciality rolls. =)

Awesome sushi, great value!

Specialty rolls were very tasty and presentation nice. Service not too friendly and willing to serve

Nice!. Creative rolls, affordable prices, quick service, and large portions. What more can I expect? This place is seriously the best for North American style sushi.

Really like the place. Kadoya Sushi has some of the best rolls I've ever tasted. The sauces are really great and everything on their menu's quite good. Although the restaurant can get cramped sometimes, the service is definitely getting better so I'll keep going. Overall, a great place to try creative rolls.

One of the best sushi spots in town. Their tuna and salmon tataki are huge. Wild salmom sashimi also generous in portion. Some waitresses who worked there for a while are bitchy, but I see the owner has hired new waitresses and they are a great improvement.

This is my favourite restaurant for creative sushi, and so far I haven't found anything better. We've tried a number of their creative rolls - Canucks, Kadoya, Paradise, Dragon, Sakura. All were pretty good, but my favorite one is Canucks roll. I love the combination of spicy salmon and crunchy tempura and bonito in top. Today we'll be trying the Phoenix roll with pumpkin tempura and salmon. I'm really curious about that combination.

FARMED SALMON. Decent portions. Everything is swimming in sauce. Salads and rolls were kind of gross. I threw out neary 35 $ worth of sushi.
Saeryn Correll
Good value, okay food.. This place is usually busy with some turnover, so getting seated isn't too much of an issue. Service is attentive at first, but with only two people covering the space you don't expect much.
The food is good, though what stands out is the special rolls and the raw stuff. The cooked food sometimes leaves something to be desired, where the tempura has a bit too much batter to my tastes and the gyoza was very over-fried. Still, all-in-all it's a place worth going back to.

Hey not Bad!. The tuna nigiri's were probably the biggest I have ever had, huge slices of yummy tuna on them. The Chicken Teriyaki Don bowl was massive as well, I could not finish the entire thing and it was only like 7 bucks. Great spot to pop in quick and get some sustenance.

This is a tiny restaurant but it has some really different and unusual chef recommendations. We tried the paradise and pumpkin roll. Both were very delicious! We also had some wild salmon sashimi - ridiculously delicious! Prices were reasonable too.

Bad. The name is confused to people who don't know japanese in English writing, no explanation in english, that make people order wrong food. "don" , mean rice but in english don mean ntohing, after i ordered a don, i thought it a friend of udon. but i come out rice. and staff is not friendly. my friend said they try to force for tips. won't go back. and it a chinese run japanese restaurant, i want japanese run japanese restaurant.

Dinosaur!. The service leaves a lot to be desired, but that can be overlooked because the menu items are amazing and so well-priced! Try the chef suggestions if you're a newbie, but I like the dinosaur roll (roast duck and duck skin sushi. Refreshing, light, and under nine bucks.

Great food, Awesome Value. Since I moved to Vancouver I have been an avid advocate for Kadoya based on their amazing Spicy Tuna Rolls and unique little restaurant. I have since tried to find a sushi place that is at all comparable (given the prices).

The spicy tuna roll is absolutely amazing, the rainbow is also fabulous. Other awesome specialty rolls include the Canuck and Stanley Park.

Yes, the place is cramped with small tables and the service is not first class but it;s still a great place to dine in or take out for pretty cheap.

Now that I live down the street you can see me there at least three days a week. I am also disappointed when I convince myself to try a new place and have been repeatedly let down.

Try it!

Food is always consistent.... and delicious. This is my favorite sushi join in the city. Try the spicy tuna sashimi.

One of the best.. There are alot of choices in my neighbourhood, but this, in my opinion, is the one of the best sushi/sashimi choices available. I have visited probably twenty times and have never noticed any freshness issues with the ingredients, which can be a common disappointment with some of these small local restaurants.
Recently renovated, the interior is eyecatching and even a bit kitschy. A nightclub-like underwater effect is created with a genius combination of aqua paint, string lighting and currigated clear siding (sounds strange, i know, but check it out and you will be pleased). It almost makes your forget how unhappy the service staff seems. I've never been in the place when it wasn't absolutely packed, and still the service has always been pretty swift, but don't expect them to try to make you feel comfortable. Get in, order, eat, and get the heck out.
You will probably forgot about the interior and service pretty quickly, though. The food is brilliant. If you are a sushi nut like me, I recommend coming with lots of friends and eating family style. Order as many plates as you can possibly eat, and with as much variety as possible. Don't just stick to your staples either (I am addicted to spicy combos at pretty much any sushi restaurant I visit). Try some maki, rolls, sashimi, donburi, bbq, etc. I will say that all of the house specialty rolls there are a win in terms of taste and texture details (example: toasted sesame seeds add some outer crunch to the rolls).
Don't forget to pair with some kirin or asahi super dry!
Trinity
FOOD IS GOOD, SERVICE IS BAD. Tastes is good, but I heard the boss uses dirty words to scold employees in Chinese. Service attitude is poor

Simple cheap Sushi, done right!. Exactly as the title says - It's simple, to the point, North American styled Sushi, done just how it should be done.

Fresh, hot sushi!. My friend recommended this restaurant when he saw that it was featured on CNN.

so we decided to give it a try for a birthday dinner, and it was definitely a good choice...although seating was very limited and squished. not such an ideal place to dine out if out with a big group of friends.

nevertheless, the sushi rolls were amazing. their presentation was beautiful and the fried ingredients were cooked to perfection- not too much batter, not soggy, just right

the price is good, considering they are speciality rolls.
worth going down for

Terrible service. I actually like their spicy tuna roll. But after experiencing their terrible service i never went back.

My friend also once told me when she went there with her friends, they ordered food and a pitcher of beer at the end of their meal. Right when the pitcher arrived, the waitress told them that they had to leave in 5 minutes because it was getting busy. So instead of taking the time to enjoy their beverage, they had to chug right away be4 they were kicked out. I mean, if they're gonna force them out, then they shouldn't have taken their last order. sheesh.

Meh.... It's not that the food is terrible but it's certainly not what I expect of sushi. I like balanced flavors. A lot of the rolls could use some acid to offset the fried flavors. And there is a slight sweetness to all the rolls that is off putting. If you like your sushi to have fresh, clean, bright flavors like me, this is not the right place. If you are a big fan of fried foods.....give it a try. I wouldn't go again though.

Excellent place.. It's my favorite Japanese restaurant in vancouver.

Food is colorful, great, well balanced, comfortable seats, nice interiors, and excellent service!

I recommend it for people who have business guests seeking Japanese food.

Best Maki Rolls Place on Davie. Everytime I have friends and family visit from out of town, they say, "we must eat at Kadoya before our visit ends". Their creative fusion maki rolls are always a hit and at a great price too ($8-9 per specialty roll). I highly recommend the Tuna Tataki. It was absolutely delicious. The sauce is so good that I keep it around to dip my rolls in. Some of my favourite rolls: Canucks, Phoenix, Alaska & Spider. Although it is a very small space, they recently renovated and it looks pretty nice - I do miss the old decor of neon comment signs all over the walls. They take reservations most of the time and is highly recommended to do so, or else you will find yourself waiting for awhile. The food comes up quickly as well.

Fusion sushi. "The apex of fusion sushi", as one reviewer described it, is only a good thing if you think a Canada Roll comprised of deep fried salmon, bacon AND (I kid you not) "bacon bits" is a positive development. Myself, I'm not so sure. Kadoya's claim to fame seems to be its specialty rolls (large, eight piece rolls priced between $7.95 - $9.95), and they were certainly selling lots of them last night. But almost every roll seemed to feature a deep-fried ingredient of some kind (which became the dominant flavour in each of the rolls we ate - the Vancouver roll, the Sakura roll and the Canuck), and much of the delicacy and aesthetic appeal of specialty rolls, at their finest, was really missing here. What is lacking in subtlety was certainly made up for in bulk, so if that's your thing you'll likely be very happy here.

Kadoya teetered very close to making my "Favourites" list, but ultimately has too much competition in the Lower Mainland to get there (try Daikichi on Marine Drive in West Vancouver for specialty rolls that really make the grade). It's a very credible sushi restaurant with fresh ingredients and no real problem, but nothing to travel across town for.
Loveoffood
Great good and price but just like to add that the menu posted in this site is outdated and everything is a $1 more
Ahead Of The Curve
Closed for renos until April 30. Too bad, I was looking forward to spicy tuna rolls tonight.
Archie Crisis
Great food, great service, never disappoints. The dragon roll and spider roll are to die for!
Gotta Eat
Lots of funky specialty rolls. As the title stated, there are a lot of specialty roll at Kadoya. Some are really good, others are questionable. The decor is not great, a typical Japanse restaurant, nothing unique at all. I liked majority of the rolls, not everything. My biggest complaint for this restaurant is the service, I really don't like the servers. They are rude and condescending, just take your food to go and you'll be fine
Idea Rabbit
The restaurant was small and cramped, with barely any walking space nor spaces between each table.

At Kadoya Japanese Restaurant on Davie Street, owner Lin Xiao takes the world of sushi to a whole new level by infusing colours, textures and flavours never before touched by chopsticks.
Trevor Amundrud
Not enough positive words in the English language to fully describe Kadoya, so let’s just leave it at saying that it is an absolute must. If you love sushi – or you’re planning on trying it for the first time – Kadoya is the place for you.
Yummo Ca
the sushi itself, though quite good for lunch doesn't have that nice dinner out level of flavour.
Michelle Clough
In a city filled with great sushi restaurants and high-quality Japanese dining, Kadoya still stands out to me as one of my favorite places to eat in all of Vancouver.
FollowMeFoodie
I've been to Kadoya a few times and I must say I'm quite impressed and obviously I do return. It's a casual unpretentious little eatery located on Davie and Thurlow and perfect for lunch or quick dinners. It's a bit cramped and seats maybe 30 so you want

This little sushi restaurant has to be the apex of fusion sushi.

I recently celebrated my 25th birthday, and what a day. First the Chairman treated me to New India Buffet, which was a delight, and then Ratbag suggested that we check out his new favorite sushi restaurant, Kadoya, on Davie St. We showed up around 6:30, a
