Recommended by a friend for authentic Japanese. We enjoyed our mix of food - sashimi, sushi and tempura. The fish was very fresh and sushi was tasty. I feel like it was a little bit overpriced for what we got. $40pp with one wine and we didn’t overeat. If you’re not on a budget and enjoy fresh seafood, I’d recommend this place. The servers were friendly and pleasant. Atmosphere was a little quiet.

This place truly is a hidden gem, snuggled within the residents of the South cambie area. I frequent here with a friend of mine, who is very loyal to their brand.

The cod is seriously to die for. Another friend of mine always gets their tamago. This place is definitely true Japanese cuisine. The prices are also very reasonable. Service is always very genuine.
This place is one of my top places for authentic Japanese.

Hachibei is a little hidden Japanese restaurant in South Cambie. I’ve been craving to try new places in town and I stumbled upon Hachibei. It was highly recommended by a few friends and I am a sucker for small authentic Japanese restaurants. The space isn’t very large, but make reservations if you have a large group. Since it was only myself and 2 others, we took a chance.

Hachibei is a little hidden Japanese restaurant in South Cambie. I've been craving to try new places in town and I stumbled upon Hachibei. It was highly recommended by a few friends and I am a sucker for small authentic Japanese restaurants.

Salmon Sashimi comes with 8 pieces and they use wild sockeye salmon. That colour is just beautiful and had a nice taste.

Steamed clam with sake was their special for the day and ti comes with a delicious broth and 6 pieces of clams. Very delicious broth and nice big clams.

Battera is pickled mackerel sushi pressed into a rectangular shape. It seemed like there was ginger on top of the pickled mackerel too.

Chopped Scallop Roll had large chunks of scallops and tobiko inside. Very fresh and delicious.

My favourite Japanese food in town. Authentic and delicious! Go a little early if you don't want to wait for a table as the place is quite small.

Hachi Bei is a tiny little Japanese restaurant that is snuggled in a residential area. They serve sushi as well as rice sets and excel at both. Their black cod is their star dish, coming with a huge portion of fish at a decent price. However it is oftentimes "sold out" so always have a backup order in mind. This trip they were sold out so we had to order alternative dishes. I got the yam tempura, and a bunch of sushi. The yam tempura turned out to be potato but it was still really good. The sushi was also outstanding, holding the same quality that you would expect to find at a fancy Japanese restaurants. Their rice sets are also good. They come with a whole plethora of sides, creating a complete meal.

We came here for a late dinner after a long day at the office. The menu is extensive, food is fresh and delicious. Surprisingly, the dinner combos came with many sides which made it quite a feast. The service is very friendly. I would definitely return.

The food here reminds me so much of the homey comfort foods found in the hidden alleys of Japan. Yes, the restaurant is Japanese owned. My wife & I come here a lot, it's as close as we can get to homecooked Japanese food. The teishoku are the reason to come. Teishoku are set meals which includes a main dish, rice, miso soup, and several veggie side dishes. Our favorites are the black cod (nice thick fillet), fried oysters, BBQ squid, and simmered mackerel. Everyone that I've recommended the simmered mackerel to loves it so give it a try. Though not a unique dish, it's seldom found in Japanese restaurants in this part of the world.

There's a small sushi menu, but it's not their strength. Stick with the teishoku.

Service is friendly, not fine dining standard, but this is just a humble neighborhood meshi-ya, or small eating place. When they're not too busy, my wife can even practice Japanese with some of the wait staff. But, it often gets busy at peak dinner time so come early or come late. Make reservations if you want come between 6-7. They are only open for dinner.

The service staff at Hachibei is very friendly, but they can be inattentive at times.

Their menu offers a variety of teishokus, ranging from fried pork cutlets to healthier options such as grilled mackerel. With the exception of the black cod ($23), the average price for each set is around $15.

For appetizers, we ordered a roll of negitoro. Fresh tuna. Green onions. Yum!

Negitoro roll ($3.75)

On to the main course…

BBQ Fish Teishoku ($15.50)

The choice of fish varies from day to day. This time around we had three choices: local mackerel, Japanese mackerel or Spanish mackerel. We picked Japanese mackerel because it had the least amount of tiny bones :D

Our food arrived after ~20 minutes of ordering. We didn’t mind the wait because the fish was grilled on the spot and served hot! As you can see in the picture above, you get a little bit of everything. This set was light, healthy, but also very satisfying (read: filling) at the same time.

Pork Ginger ($13.75)

In contrast to the grilled fish, the pork was definitely heavier in flavour. The combination with the ginger reminded me of Chinese pork buns (not that there is anything wrong with that). The salad consisted of shredded lettuce and mayo. It was very simple, but it cut down the fattiness of the pork. The potato salad was lighter than you’d expect because it had a kick of wasabi/mustard in it.

Between the two mains, I preferred the fish over the pork. (It’s probably a nostalgia thing).

Awesome authentic Japanese cuisine. There is no pandering to North American tastes here, and I love it. You must try the soft shell crab, and the teishoku seafood dishes. Large portions, varied items, deliciously seasoned and grilled. Their sushi isn't bad too, if you must, but I come here for everything else since it's uncommon to find any Japanese food other than sushi in Vancouver. A bit on the pricy side, as it's not a cheap sushi joint, it fills up pretty quick so get there early.

Reserved a table for 2 - Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Ordered no. 10 Sliced Beef Teriyaki Combo Box; no. 40 Black Cod Saikyoyaki, and an order of no. 51 Salmon Sashimi.

Food was above average, a generous portion of black cod that was quite impressive.  Salmon Sashimi was fresh.

Service was attentive though busy.

A small but nicely decorated friendly Japanese restaurant.

Will go again.

Hello everyone! The other day my friends & I decided to try out a Japanese restaurant located on West 16th near Cambie. We went on a Thursday so it wasn't that busy, which was great! We didn't have to wait long for our table & also we were able to find tons of parking space along West 16th & on the side streets.  The interior is very small but not compact to the point where its unbearable. Its a very cute Japanese themed restaurant. They have numerous Japanese décor around the space and it made the atmosphere feel very comfortable. This restaurant is owned by Japanese people, unlike the Japanese restaurants we have around Vancouver right now which is mostly owned by either Koreans or Chinese people. Don't get me wrong, those ones are great too! But once in a while I love to eat from an authentic Japanese restaurant. First off, we ordered the Tuna & Salmon Sashimi plate ($15.00) which came with 4 slices of each. The sashimi was fresh and tasted great! Can't complain about sashimi :) The slices were cut up rather thick so I thought we got a good amount for the price! Next up are rolls! From left to right: Kanpyo Roll ($2.75), BBQ Eel & Cucumber ($5.50), Green Onion & Fatty Tuna ($3.95). I really enjoyed all the rolls! It all tasted great! My personal favourite was the green onion & fatty tuna! It was my first time trying a Kanpyo roll and it reminded me a lot of bamboo shoot. Kanpyo is actually dried long strips of gourd. It is a traditional Japanese ingredient and it tasted pretty good!

Very authentic and delicious!. I came here on a Thursday evening and it was busy. Be sure to make reservations if you can. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is kid friendly as there were other kids seated and we brought along our 3 month old. We had some raw oysters to start and they were fresh and juicy. My wife ordered the simmered mackerel teishoku and I had the breaded deep fried oyster teishoku. Both came with a variety of side dishes and everything tasted good. The prices are very reasonable and you should be quite full as the amount was just right for the both of us. I would come back and give their other dishes a try. Highly recommended!

Small cozy restaurant, in a quiet neighborhood. Plenty of parking outside. Opens at 5-9:30pm they have a variety of different types of food, but within each category, there is a limited number of selections. The sashimi was fresh and tasted good. Tried the salmon gyoza which is a unique twist to a classic favorite. The breaded fried oyster was good, too bad it comes as a combo. I didn't need the rice, greens and potato salad. The taste was good. I did enjoy that the rolls were not packed full of rice, allowing to taste the flavones of the ingredients. The price is comparable and like the fact they open on Mondays. Service was good and hey we're very attentive. Overall experience: thumb's up

Revisit. Haven't been to Hachibei in ages...and it seems as if more items are on the menu. They had a whole page of specials so I ordered the Oyster teishoku. It was a nice big portion with plump, springy fresh oysters deep fried in a crunchy panko crust, served with a tartar sauce and a tonkatsu sauce. It came with a lightly dressed green salad, a side dish of pickles, potato salad, miso soup and rice. I thought it was a fine deal. I think the sushi was pretty good but I am still partial to Shiro for sushi. I wanted to order the Dorayaki (red bean pancakes) but we were too full. Maybe next time. Kids loved the juicy chicken karaage (dark meat pieces) and the chicken teriyaki box combo was a pretty good deal with tempura, california roll, tender chicken with a not too sweet sauce, sprouts, spinach gomae, miso soup and fruit. We'll be back to try other items soon.

Cute Restaurant!. They serve a variety of teishoku, which means a set meal with rice, miso soup, main course and salad. I visit here really frequently because I can never get tired of the food, and it's quite close to where I live. This restaurant is small, but line-up is often not required. I have almost tried every teishoku they have, and it's always really amazing! Among all, I like the Tonkatsu teishoku, pork cutlet, the most. It is not oily at all but the flavour of the pork is still there, and I can never finish the whole meal without having one more bowl of rice! The potato salad served along the teishoku is really good too! One sad thing is that... it doesn't open on Sunday =(

Cool Teishoku Restaurant. I frequent this restaurant, so I would say I visit this place at least once a month. I love the tofu hamburgers teishoku they have there, it's the only place that serves it. It's a highly recommended dish. It also serves unlimited rice if you order a meal (teishoku). It's a small comfortable little restaurant.

This is not the place I would come to for sushi though. I think the teishoku dishes are the forte and would suggest you focus on the cooked fish like the mackerel and black cod I spied on other guests’ tables. I seem to always want what other diners are eating. But oh well—live and learn.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Hachibei. Long on my to-check-out list, but never quite enticing enough to warrant it rising to the top. In a quest for some good Japanese comfort food, we finally made the short trip out to this place. As you can see fro
