Wonderful local spot with super friendly service and great coffee. Beautiful and cosy interior design with a rustic feel.
Black Rook Bakehouse is a small unassuming little bakery that I could have easily missed if I hadn't heard about it online while looking for places to have cake (I'm always on the look out for cake). The place wasn't busy when I arrived there (10:30 am on Sunday), and I was greeted by a friendly young lady. Being a chocoholic, I was disappointed to see that they weren't offering any of their chocolate cake varieties that day. They did have a red velvet cake however (named "Molly), which I got instead. I also had a bacon and cheese croissant.
Bacon & Cheese Croissant ($4.5): 2.5/5 (4 if it wasn't a croissant); The first thing I have to mention is that the croissant was surprisingly heavy. Although it looked to be about the same size as a regular croissant, it weighted at least 1.5x as much. Unfortunately, as a croissant, it was not very good. It had a more bread-like texture, and was not flaky and buttery as a croissant should be. I did enjoy the taste; I just think that it should be called a "bun" rather than a croissant.
"Molly" Red Velvet Cake ($7): 5/5; Although the price is a bit high, the size of the slice was generous (not as big as Trafiq, but definitely much larger than Sweet Obsession). As for the taste, I have to say, I absolutely loved it. The cake was very moist and tangy, with a perfect amount of delicious cream cheese frosting (and what appears to be bits of cranberry/raspberry).
Even though the croissant was disappointing, I did come to the bakery primarily for their cakes, and I left happy. Although Trafiq still ranks at the top of my list, Black Rook has certainly found a spot in my sugar-loving heart. I really hope that they will be offering some of their chocolate varieties the next time that I visit.
I just would like to mention that the bakery has a funny way of naming their cakes by giving them people names like "Harold" or "Chester" (and in my case for the red velvet cake "Molly"). I don't know the reason behind it, but I thought it was quite cute.
Delicious, very buttery pastry. Sipping your Salt Spring coffee surrounded by rustic furniture and nice music make it for a lovely experience.
My friend and I decided to visit Black Rook after The Red Wagon for dessert! The bakery is very open and seating is spaced apart nicely, the decor is super cute to! Service was great, the lady was really nice and helpful in helping us make our decision...
Cozy place. There bake goods are so good. Such a comfortable place to sit and have one of there great coffee. Lots of pillows to lean on. Such friendly staff.
You have to go there!!!. Twice this week and Wow, great baked goods and the bread....well get there. they go quick and I see why. They have my business!!
A bakery like you'd find in a small town.. Homestyle baked goods. The variety is amazing! Becoming very popular with local restaurants who order their desserts from Black Rook.
Special Take Home to the Kootenays. Down in Vancouver for the big American Educational Research Association conference (12,000 academics downtown!), I stopped by my favourite bakery in Vancouver, had a piece of pear, walnut & blackberry pie, and ordered 4 brisket and stout pot pies (the most amazing flavors!), a rasberry/rhubarb pie, and 4 fabulous cheese croissants to pick up on my way home several days later.
My partner had invited 4 friends (I had two extra of the brisket and stout pot pies I had been saving in my freezer) and we all went down to the Little Slocan River spot at our home, by the garden. With table and chairs and the heated up pot pies and the great salad the friends brought over, we had our first outdoor evening of the 2012 season. The delightful flavours and a couple of bottles of wine and the finally changing weather made for a perfect evening, Thanks to Karen and Dana at the Black Rook Bakehouse for their great food!
We had two mornings of croissants and tea, and just finished up the last bite of pie yesterday. Still the best crust, several days later. Melt in your mouth!
A tasty SOB. The SOB brownie is one tasty SOB. It allows Lopan to live out some earthly pleasures. Lopan cares not for North American styles cakes, but the cake was pretty good and not too sweet. Lopan will return
My new favourite. Try the Chester - you won't be sorry !
Finally I got to enjoy the beef brisket n stout pot pie. Very nicely made with lots of good flavored and fatty beef. Crust was flaky. I also picked up a apple cheddar croissant. I was hesitant whether it had apples in it because when I took a bite, I saw nothing but cheddar. Yep, they were there after finishing the 'dessert'. I hinted some saltiness in the croissant, it balance the sweet apple and aged cheddar. Definitely return...
Best crossiant EVER!. A friend of mine bought me a piece of Coconut Cream Pie a few weeks ago and it was INCREDIBLE! Seriously delicious. I was intrigued, to see what else the Black Rook had to offer so I popped by on the weekend. I love the industrial, open kitchen and exposed ovens. I liked seeing all the measuring cups, bowls, trays and flour on the flour - it made me want to tie on an old fashioned apron and go behind the counter to help out. They played Etta James music. The all butter crossiant was perfect - truly perfect wish I had bought more than 2 of them.) We tried the ham & swiss cheese and the chicken, smokey tomato and the quiches and they were well seasoned with lovely crust. I bought the chocolate cheesecake, dutch apple pie and a slice of coconut cream pie for a dinner party and everyone loved each bite. I also tried the pumpkin loaf which was perfect with tea in the morning.
I hope this bakery is successful for a very long time.
God where to begin, AMAZING ! The concept of carrot cake with cream cheese icing with a layer of cheese cake in the middle is brilliant. Can't wait to go back and try the Black 'n Tan cake next. Check this great new bakery now.
I was supposed to make my Dad's birthday cake but ran out of time. Dropped by Black Rook because they are new in my 'hood. WOW! I was impressed by the variety and style of cakes, the ambiance and the service. Chose the Black and Tan. It was lovely; beautiful the look at, chocolatey and sweet, Dad said he could taste the stout. Will definitely be back.
Best cakes and pies in town!. We have eaten at The Black Rook twice. Both times the cake slices were substantial, delicious and moist. And the prices are very reasonable compared to what you pay at the other local cake chains. The chocolate stout cake I had today was excellent. Again, huge, moist and full of flavour. The coconut cream pie my partner had was equally good. Big slice, flakey crust (but not dry) and full of scratch made filling. Nothing out of a can or pre-processed here. The menu is limited to cakes, pies and a few pastries but I think this focus serves them well. There are so few places in Vancouver to get a real homemade piece of cake or pie. And at about $4.50 for the piece of pie and $5.50 for a big slice of cake, this is probably the best deal in Vancouver.
Delicious!. I dropped in here on a whim this morning - I live nearby and have been wanting to try this place out. I love the spacious interior and it's subtle rustic style. The lady who greeted me was super friendly and was happy to chat about the baked goods with me. There was no one else in there when I was there, and the selection of baked goods was a bit sparse - the lady explained that they had had a big rush this morning and were replenishing the stock as quickly as they could. I ordered a brisket and stout pot pie, a white chocolate ginger cookie (both items fresh and still warm from the oven!), and a slice of the Elizabeth cake. The brisket and stout pot pie, I believe, was the best pot pie I've ever had - the brisket was tender, flavourful and just a bit fatty, as good brisket should be. The sauce, or gravy, or whatever you call it, was amazing. It was packed with flavour and very tangy, almost like they had added a teeny splash of vinegar to it. I could probably eat one of these every day. The white chocolate ginger cookie was lovely - a perfect combination of a crunchy top and chewy cookie, with melty white chocolate chunks. I could have done with perhaps a bit more of a bite from the ginger, but that's just my personal taste. The Elizabeth cake, a multi-layered delicacy of Earl Grey chiffon, blackberry buttercream, white chocolate buttercream and coconut, was lovely as well. I will be returning to try some of the sandwiches they serve from 10 - 2 Thurs to Sat- pulled pork or brisket. I would definitely recommend this place - I see from their website that they'll soon be serving in-house breakfast and lunch!
Black Rook Amazing House. I can't get enough of their cheesecake lollipops. The service is great and I love their selection and they're just getting started!
Black Rook Bakehouse makes all their goods from scratch. They have some of the most drool-worthy pies and muffins I have seen in a long time! They have a large, industrial bakery where you can see everything. They have nothing to hide, and you can even see them baking when you're there.
It’s literally been months since Black Rook Bakehouse moved out of their original location on East Hastings. And on more than one occasion, I’ve had cravings for their Chocolate Brownie Cream Pie and Beef Brisket Pot Pie
