By now, you should know I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to Malaysian places. But you never know until you try out a place right? We decided to check out Penang Delight Cafe with that in mind. They have a second location in Marpole. This PDC is located beside Aburi Sushi.
Salad...rice...and noodle. Malaysian style. Dishes run a bit small in size, but very flavourful. Try the lunch specials and avoid the dinner crowds.
This is my favourite Malaysian Restaurant in Vancouver. Eventho' prices are a little steep but food's great. Curries look like what it should look like back home, thick, strong & NOT watered down (at least that's what it was, when I tried it some time back), rendang's good (almost like mom's), KL Hokkien see is yummm, noodles in egg sauce is delish & Hainanese Chicken rice is good too. I would highly recommend this restaurant especially to anyone who wants to try Malaysian food, for the 1st time. Try the best & never look back, till the next best comes along. They also have another branch in Marpole, @ 75th & Hudson.
Marketed as an Express sister store to its main restaurant in Marpole, Penang didn't disappoint!
We visited on a early Sunday afternoon and the place was still busy with guests and many families. Quickly seated, the servers were able to greet us and carry a decent conversation. The menu itself was slightly intimidating as it features an assortment of dishes, making it hard for my table to decide! Without much experience in Malaysian cuisine, we decided to go for the staples of Roti Canai and Fish Ball Laksa. We also ordered a family-style Spicey Sambal Eggplant on the side.
The roti was served with a spicey curry dip on the side and it was definitely a good way to begin our meal. The roti had a slight buttery taste and didn't feel overly greasy with the curry dip either. The fish ball laksa features two types of noodles: egg noodles and vermicelli. The overall portion of the laksa was generous, but it definitely wasn't as thick and flavourful as the other laksas you'd find in Chinese or Hong Kong-style establishments. Likewise, I would've been able to finish a bowl of this laksa myself as it wasn't heavy at all. The highlight of our meal was definitely the Spicey Sambal Eggplant! It features pan-fried eggplant pieces with a little bit of minced meat and spices. It was the right kind of savory and we simply couldn't stop eating it!
Overall a great place for group lunch. Would definitely come by again to try more items from their menu!
Best Tom yum fried rice. I don't usually comment on fried rice but this one was amazing. The rice was wrapped around with an egg and drizzled with Tom yum sauce. Everything mixed together incredibly.
Amazing Malaysian restaurant. Visited this location numerous times and the food is consistently good! My favourites and must-orders: the laksa and roti. Always delicious! The chicken wings and satay skewers are quite good as well.
This is our go to Malaysian restaurant, especially when we are craving laksa and kang kong. When we got there we ordered the roti canai, the chicken wings, hainan chicken, basil chicken, spicy sambal kang kong, laksa, and the char kueh teow.
The laksa and kang kong are must haves, always so good! We would also recommend the roti canai and if you are looking for big chicken wings these are decent. The basil chicken was too sweet for our liking, and the Hainan chicken is similar to most restaurants. We had a disagreement about the char kueh teow, only because M doesn't like Chinese sausage, but J would eat it again and again. Also the white coffee was delicious!
No complaints about the service, but expect to wait a little for a table as this place becomes busy during dinner time. Price is average.
Penang Delight Cafe has two locations. This time we went to their location in Renfrew-Collingwood. It is a small restaurant, and it is a good place for small group of 4.
We ordered a full table of dishes, and we still want to try more dishes. Definitely, we will go back!
We tried Hainanese Chicken (海南雞). It is different than other restaurants. It is a Malaysia style Hainanese Chicken.
Food: 4/5
Services: 4/5
Special Features: Roti Canai (印度餅), Curry Laksa (咖哩啦沙), Hainanese Chicken (海南雞)
Nearby Malaysian Eats. The place was pretty small but luckily it wasn't too busy when I got there.
Had the Penang Shrimp Roll, Chicken Curry Laksa and the Kuih Talam. All very good though the dishes were a tad pricey compared to other Malaysian places I've been to.
Would like to check out their other restaurant which is surprisingly not too far from my workplace.
Authentic Malaysian Food. We love this place and go at least once a week. The food is consistently delicious. The staff are lovely. Our favorite dishes are the Char Kuey Teow, Penang Curried Laksa and Cantonese Chow Fun -all as authentic as we had in Kuala Lumpur. We highly recommend this place if you want good Malaysian food.
Small little restaurant tucked in the end of rupurt and 22nd.
the owners very friendly and speaks cantonese to all his customers so not sure if hes malaysian.
food is pretty good here but the portions arent very big.
def worth a try if your craving malay food
What's not to love? Plus coupon for free dessert!. Where have I been all this time??? Just found out about Penang on Moeji.com so went to check it out. I'm not Malaysian so I'm no expert but I thought the food tasted pretty good. The roti was good, highly recommended. We had the sambal green bean, hainanese rice, rendang beef and basil chicken. Everything was tasty. My friend got a mango smoothie to go and she seemed to like it. Then for dessert, we used our coupon from Moeji.com - it was a wrap (kind of like a crepe?) with coconut inside. Pretty good for sharing as it's quite sweet so I couldn't eat too much of it.
This IS Malaysian / SE Asian food!!. So glad to have found this place. The few dishes I've had so far taste like the food in Malaysia / SE Asia, and far more authentic than Tropika or Banana Leaf. Tropika is a horrible imposter and Banana Leaf tends to cater more to the North American palate. That said, there is still some room for improvement but, still, this is the best so far!!
Expensive and Small Portion. When we arrived there were still a few empty tables up front but the waitress decided to seat us in the back of the restaurant. We didn't want to complain but it was really unpleasant to sit right by the washroom hallway and a foot from us was where all the dirty dishes were placed. People had to line up right behind us to get to the washroom.
Food: Small portions. A lot of dishes to choose from incl. a number of appetizers and desserts that we don't usually get in other malaysian restaurants. We ordered the beef rendang - ok but small portion. Hainanese rice - good but have had better ones. Rojak - pretty big portion for an appetizer. Cendol - pretty good, a little expensive. We also ordered the hainanese chicken rice.
Service - pretty hard to get their attention to get some more tea especially when we sat in the back.
One of the best Singapore/Malaysia food around. This place is a gem. Great food all around, from appetizers (prawn thingy) to main (KL Hokkien mee) to dessert (chendol).
I've tried Tropika, Banana Leaf, Tamarind Hill, etc.- I think this is near the top, if not the top.
Some desserts were a bit pricey, but taste good.
I went there the first time, and then again the following week, and planning to go again next week ;-).
Do I recommend it? What do you think?
Very good, and very fast. I tried item 14 and loved it.
Penang Delight Cafe is a great place for both lunch and dinner. The ambience is cozy and the customer service is exceptional. Some may find the prices to higher than average, but given what you get from the dining experience, I would say that it is worth every extra penny.
“Milo Dinosaur”? No, there’s no relation to the famous purple anthropomorphic dinosaur on tv… it’s really just an iced malt beverage topped off with more undissolved chocolate malt powder. It’s actually quite refreshing on a hot day due to the ice cream.
Colleen 'n I met up with my parents for dinner at Penang Delight. The restaurant is packed as usual, good thing I called earlier to reserve a table for 730. Unfortunately my parents were stuck in traffic coming in from Richmond, so I went in and moved our reservation back by 30mins. Not a problem and the owner was very glad that I did. lol My parents arrive just about 750 and it was perfect timing, however by 830pm our table was still not ready. So again, no biggie, but the owner kept insisting that he will give us drinks on the house once our table was ready. After a back and forth contest of 'no its ok' we gave up and said thanks, we'll take it.
My parents read about Penang Delight in a Chinese newspaper and suggested trying it out for dinner. I did a bit of research online and discovered a coupon on Moeji (complimentary dessert with purchase over $30) . I stupidly assumed that reservations were not necessary for Thursday nights, but I was wrong and we ended up waiting for almost half an hour. We started the meal with roti canai ($5.95), a must-order item whenever I dine at a Malaysian restaurant. This was done extremely well and the pancake had a crispy exterior and fluffy layers. I don't think the curry dip went well with it though, as the intense flavour completely dominated the delicate taste of the pancake. Due to my positive experience with pandan roasted chicken at SalaThai , I decided to try the pandan chicken wings ($5) here as well. The skin was nice and crispy with very little fat, and the meat inside was unbelievably tender and juicy. The pandan flavour wasn't too strong, but the slight hint of fragrance was good e
This moderate sized restaurant was very cute and nicely decorated. I especially liked the fake coconut tree at the front of the restaurant.
There were actually quite a few dishes that piqued my interest at Penang Delight so I wouldn’t mind giving them a try the next time I’m at the restauran
This time round, it was my turn to make the reservation. Some more, Ron and Nancy made me call Penang Delight to make sure they have all the dishes we missed the last time. So, I called them … twice! I need to make sure.
