Can't go wrong with Ramones, dogs and beer. The vegan wings are great and the vibe of the place is awesome. My literal only issue is that the casing on the dog was a bit tough but overall it was a great meal with good cheap beer.
jack daniels, the ramones and a chicago dog after a long day of bullshit. getting the wings next time.
the chicago dog was real good. good snap to the wiener. the relish glowed nuclear green. all good. eat here.
Atmosphere: Music was pumped way too loud, it was difficult to have a conversation without yelling and spitting. . Service: Meh. We stood at the door for a solid 4 minutes with the server walking past us 3 times without acknowledging if we wait or at least put us on the waiting list. We eventually went up to the counter and asked what the deal was.
If you haven’t watched Bob’s Burgers, you have to go and watch it now. Then come back and read this. It’s such a great show! It depicts the life of Bob and his family. They’re all a little zany and weird, but that’s what makes them so relatable. Anyway, like last year, What’s Up? Hot Dog! in Vancouver transformed their diner into Bob’s Burgers from the show! I didn’t get to go last year, so I made sure I squeeze a visit into my schedule this Halloween.
Aside from its catchy name, their colourful decor, and the humorous sandwich boards; you come for their hot dogs, which are all those things, and just as fun. The restaurant’s yellow awning asks you, “What’s up? Hot dog!” As their hip level signs challenge how cool you use to be, while trying to peer pressure you into coming in for a drink, and then luring you in with the promise of rare Pokemon. Though I am sure all this gets updated and changed around often.
As for the actual grub, their custom-made beef hot dogs from Two Rivers are fairly pleasing going down. The Matt and She's hot dog (with mac and cheese, bacon bits, green onions, and black pepper) was everything. It's simple but delicious and comforting. It's no wonder it's their best selling dog.
We went to a totally fun Ukrainian Dim Sum Pop-up tonight at What’s Up? Hot Dog! on Hastings near Nanaimo. Hosted by @whatsuphotdogvan, with food by Mike Scorgie (@scorgiesown), and some front-of-house assistance from Sarah from @communitypizzeria. It was one of those great, street-level events that are happening all around you if you keep your eyes open 😉
Love the food quality here. I had a Chicago Dog (in my opinion the pinnacle of Hotdog Technology) and Waffle Fries. The only thing I can say is DDDAAAMMMMNNN, that was a F#$%king good hotdog. The fries are a thing unto themselves.
You just have to ignore the lame hipster vibe.... Luckily the staff are actually friendly enough to overcome this. It would also go much better with beer...
DOn't miss out though, this is completely worth your $$$
What’s Up? Hot Dog! is nestled in the former Master Chef location along East Hastings Mike looks around at WUHD in wonder. He used to hang out with friends at Master Chef back in the day, tucking into an egg salad sandwich, picking at homemade fries, sipping a coke from a can. We’re a long way from Master Chef in this newly redesigned, retro diner playing punk music.
