Review Mean Poutine - Vancouver

Jeremy
Mean Poutine is one of the top choices for poutine in Vancouver. While they do offer hot dogs, and I have frequented this place ok sever occasions the point one has always been my go to. Place is busy on nights when the Granville strip is lit up. Definitely worth checking out after a night out on the town.

This poutine is the best I know :) southern BBQ and Fried chicken my favs

The Poutine here has been voted in the top of Vancouver's restaurant charts for years now, and once you try it for yourself, you'll understand why. It's literally a hidden gem, disguised as a little cubby in between two restaurants on Granville & Nelson. It's a family run business, and these ladies are pandemic all-stars - they stayed open throughout the entire pandemic - and that kind of dedication to a business that you're passionate about should say enough about the upstanding quality of this unique, eclectic little 'hole in the wall'.

Update May 14 2022: gave it another try… delicious! But they now charge 50 cents for green onions Update Feb 23 2021: went there today. had it to go and now that I'm home, the lady didn't put enough gravy, not enough cheese. they were so much better pre-COVID. not worth the $8 I paid for. I started to go to Mean Poutine after my favourite poutine place changed hands. mean Poutine is fabulous. The ladies behind the counter are always smiling. It is a family business - mother and daughter look like sisters; there may be others outside the family. I order the classic poutine and they put green onions 👍👍👍 I’m not sure what other flavours taste like. If you like my post and photos, please give me a thumbs up 👍 Thanks.

Wanted to grab a quick Poutine on the way home and stopped here. Signaled the lady behind the counter that I wanted to order. She was on the phone and gave me a quick hand signal that she was on a call. I waited 5 minutes and since she didn’t seem to care about me waiting I ended up walking next door to "The Moose" who served me a delicious poutine to go in 5-7 minutes 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ordered the Mexicana and the Southern BBQ and was not surprised the Southern BBQ tasted absolutely rancid. The "pulled pork" must have been cooked earlier and left out during the day because as soon as I started eating the meat, something was just off. This establishment is hit or miss. Save some money and just get poutine from Costco since thats where the fries come from it seems.

Worst customer serivce ever! Me and my friend waited in the line for 15-20 minutes, when we were about to order we request the lady to change the gloves as we're allergic she denied and said she just sanitized the gloves. Literally, She just took the cash from us with her gloves on. We were like WOW Actually this is not the first time it happened! they're always rude but we always go to this location becoz that is the only one in downtown and we like poutine . This time we didn't get any food bcoz the lady refused to change her gloves

Website said they were open. Yelp and Google said they were open. Walked half way across Vancouver to get there only to find them closed. As I was looking for another poutine place, a person I'm assuming was the owner showed up and I asked if he was going to be opening. His response was "read the sign. It says closed"

Mean Poutine deserves 11/5 stars. Been coming here over years and it is consistently the best Poutine I've ever had, specifically the deep fried chicken Poutine! John the owner is a great dude and it's always a blessing to see his smiling face serving the warm heavenly delight that will melt your taste buds off into orgasmic bliss with the perfectly rationed crispy fries, cheesey curds of delight and just the right amount of stomach warming gravey. Whichever version you get, you're mouth is garaunteed a good time. MEAN P 🖤❤️🖤

When in Vancouver, you have to try poutine, said by everyone I know... OMG, was this so yummy. Perfect fries, covered in perfect cheese curds and gravy, topped with a huge portion of bacon, grilled onions and chives... one word... NOM!

I was introduced to this humble place, when a coworker of mine came back during his break. With the alluring smell of a Southern BBQ Poutine, I was curious as to where he had gotten such a delicious looking meal. I asked for the location and felt a compelling need to visit. The location looked so small by comparison to many other restaurants and bars nearby, yet, it stood out from the crowd for it's cute banner over the top order window. The first thing I noticed was the music being played in the background. 99 Luftballoons was playing, taking me back to my glorified youth and nostalgia. As I had approached, a sweet lady had received me with a sincere smile, and asked me what I wanted. Based on what I had read on the menu, there was an abundance of flavors and mixtures that I wanted to try. Yet because I wanted the Southern BBQ, I ordered that instead of the alternative choices. The preparation took no time at all, as everything was kept warm and continuously supplied, with ingredients fitting any kind of Poutine a person could want. It was a swift offering, as in 5 minutes, it was ready, and a nice warm box was given to me with a plastic fork in the centre, and a napkin under the box. That woman's smile never left her face, as she gave me a meal that made me realize I've never had. MeanPoutine has the unique hours and times to be available in the darkest of night, and since it is brave enough to face the drunks of Granville, I can say that the food is truly delicious and quite filling. Nothing cures a hangover better than one of these boxes of your choosing. Even if you don't know what to choose, even the basic classic Poutine is good enough to satisfy you. One portion is always enough for me. Yet it always leaves me wanting to come back another shift at work, just so I can see that wonderful smile and great service that comes with creating the true Poutine experience. There has never been a better Poutine in my life than a MeanPoutine.

Had the Fried Chicken Poutine last night and I must say, it was awesome, and what a nice guy!! I'm from the UK and must say my expectations were certainly met!!

BEST POUTINE IN THE WORLD! BEST STAFF IN THE WORLD!!! BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD! I CANT GET ENOUGH MEAN POUTINE!

Quick and easy poutine. They stock your standard, plus stacks of speciality options. We came here to give some friends their first taste of poutine and it didn’t disappoint.

We got the Fried Chicken Poutine :) The fries were perfectly crisp, nice gravy. Liked the crisp chicken pieces in there. The cheese was enough for the poutine . The price seems fairly reasonable. Wasn't much of a wait and got our box/plate fairly quickly. We'd go here again if we crave some Poutine.

Lady there had pretty bad attitude. I hope she’s not the owner. Not the best place for poutine...very salty gravy and comes with little cheese curds.

Went on a saturday at 3pm. Ordered the Mama Meatball. The fries were eerily similar to those sold at the Costco food stand. There were approximately 5-6 pieces of cheese in the dish. The "sauteed onions" were almost raw; they had no colouring at all, and were in large chunks. The "sauteed mushrooms" were out of a can and cold; they had not hit the grill whatsoever. They had that liquidy, chewy appearance and texture of canned mushrooms. Bizarre. I don't understand why they didn't sautee anything. The gravy was fine. Very confusing poutine. It's like they just wanted to rush and finish making it, despite there being no lineup. It was really not good in any way. I absolutely will not go back.
Ian MacPhail-Bartley
Big boxes but moderate portions (especially for the price), fries were crispy but with barely any potato, and the gravy was way too thin and plain.

Have not tried other Poutine places nearby but this is far from the real deal. Good cheese curds though.
Sandra Yan
The poutine was delicious and portions were huge for only $10.
If you want good poutine, I recommend checking this place out! Even though its just a food stand area nearby the entertainment district, there aren't any seating available, but regardless the food is very enjoyable.
I haven't tried their hot dogs yet, so maybe that is what I will do when I go back.
Constant Cravings
Before catching the Deadpool movie (yay Ryan Reynolds!), my friend and I grabbed a quick bite at Mean Poutine. Located on Nelson and Granville, Mean Poutine is just a takeout window and there is no seating available. As their name suggests, they specialize in gourmet poutines as well as gourmet hotdogs.

Was walking along downtown and always curious about mean poutine, and maybe i've never had a great poutine before, but this one tasted okay in my opinion, the gravy cheese, and all others are definitely okay and the potato are definitely okay soft as well. the price though maybe it's a little bit too much in comparison for a poutine, but again it's downtown, and fritz is also good, but it's in the same ballpark in terms of price. good for quickbite but not for the price :(
Seb's Urban Adventures
I had the Mean Supreme and it's not that it was bad, but been from Montreal it just didn't taste like Poutine. My friend had an original and same result when I tasted it. Still was filling after walking out of the Club and we were happy to get something to eat.
Georgia
The fries weren't too bad. Although felt as if the veggies took over the whole box, not enough of the classic poutine in this aka the gravy and cheese curds. Wanted to try Smoke's Pountinerie down the block but winded down here instead.
Obese Child
Delicious poutine with fries that bite back! My only complaint is that the gravy wasn't as hot/warm as i would like it to be and that there were no seats so i had to sit somewhere else.
Kabir
Good poutine - but it is a bit lacking in cheese. And at the prices asked, you'd be forgiven to expect the place to have some seating available (or serve the food in biodegradable containers).

Mean Poutine beer batters and fry their french fries fresh (about 15 minutes), leaving them crisp and airy with a texture similar to KFC fries, but thicker.

Late night revelers in Downtown Vancouver can always seek comfort in poutine at various establishments around Granville and Nelson. In the last while, I have tried Frites and Smoke’s Poutinerie which are both located in that area (though during the daytime). It had been a few *years* since I last visited Mean Poutine so I decided to go there for an updated experience.
Everything But Weddings
Mean Poutine has one of the best poutines I've ever had. I'm a poutine purist and don't really like too many toppings but their addition of green onions really adds an extra dimension. Their fries are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The gravy wasn't overwhelming and they were generous with their cheese curds. Not to mention the portion size is quite big. Perfect for a quick meal or craving!

Mean Poutine is located in the middle of Downtown Vancouver just off Granville Street on Nelson. Great place in the neighborhood especially when I was craving crabs. Poutine was great! The price is slightly high but you will get what you expect it. Menu board Order counter and waiting/pick up area. The staff was nice and friendly. Fried Chicken @ $9 Crispy fries, brown gravy, fresh cheese curds, buffalo chicken chunks Fries were crispy; lots gravy and cheese. The gravy was warm only. Wish the gravy could be hotter to eat with the cheese curds. The bite size of fried chicken was tasty and flavorful. Great snacks during the day and late night; they open till 4am Monday to Saturday. 718 Nelson St Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L2 http://www.meanpoutine.ca/

Gravy was Cold. Overall not bad...wish the gravy was hot. It wasn't busy. Had the Fried Chicken Poutine...portion was big enough for 2 people.

Vegetarian "hot dog". Stumbled across this literal hole in the wall while visiting Vancouver and saw that they served vegetarian hot dogs (fav food), decided to give it a chance even though it looked a bit dodgy. My friend and I ordered, she get's her poutine which she said was so-so. I got my hot dog, took one look at it and noticed something looked a little off... Just didn't look like your typical veggie dog. I asked the guy (who I'm also pretty sure was the owner) working behind the till if he heard me correctly when I ordered, he said yes it was indeed a vegetarian hot dog and he didn't see what the issue was. I asked to see the package that the hot dogs came out of and he rolled his eyes as he held it up - it clearly said 'veggie SAUSAGE' ...obviously much different than a hot dog. He continued to argue with me saying that it wasn't a sausage even though the package was right infront of my face. He was extremely rude, even raised his voice while continuously telling me that I was wrong and that a hot dog and sausage are the same thing. I handed it back to him and we walked away while hearing him mutter swear words under his breath. Worst service ever, clearly named MEAN poutine for a reason.
No Dessert Im Full
So goooood. All I can say is the Fried Chicken Poutine needs to be an option everywhere poutines are available. The bite sized chunks of battered buffalo chicken is so good, the gravy is tasty, the cheese curds delectable, although I could've used more, my poutines can always use more cheese curds! The fries here are awesome too, a light crispiness to them im going to guess from a quick dip in the deep fryer?

All in all, a must try for poutine aficionados.

Unreal! Hands down the best fried chicken poutine I have ever had! The green onions just make it even better! Super nice people! Must try if you are in Vancouver area!!!

Poutine on a rainy day. Not the most ideal weather to eat poutine especially when there's no indoor seating (only a long ide counter to eat on by the menu)

But as for the poutine, had the Fried Chicken Poutine and it was really nice, the gravy wasn't too salty and the fries are made to order which is pretty sweet.

Would definitely come back to try again!

You vancouverites are crazy! It should be duely noted i take the holy trinity of fries cheese and gravy quite seriously. On desth row it would be my last meal. I was over here for a game and found myself craving poutine. Being an avid fan of LA belle patate in Victoria my instincts were to go there. Researching poutine online brought me to mean poutine a better rating than Labelle no way?! Fried chicken I gotta try this. So stoked to try this. Initial impression seeing fries from a frozen bag was rather tainted. I then looked down to observe the cheese curds. Small curds probably of the Kingsley variety That a&w uses. I see my fried chicken dropped in the deep fryer looks more like a bag of frozen chicken strips. I got the fried chicken and the other 2 I was with go the mean poutine an the philly. It did taste good but I couldn't tell the fries were beer battered. Didn't have the crunch or beer taste. If you are from Quebec and I search of squeeky curds and fresh cut fries go to labelle. I would each at mean pout in again but only if I'm in the area I wouldnt o out of my way for it. I also found labelled had better portions.. So more for my buck and better quality cheese fries and tastier gravy I think labele

OMFG WOW!. After working near this place for years, I finally got there when it was open... seriously, they do not stick to their posted hours, not by a long shot.

It seems the wait was well worth it though, this place is amazing! The poutine is nice and greasy, when paired with a hot dog, (also very well done) it tops the charts. OK, so you have eat your food standing on the street, but the Mullet band soundtrack makes you hardly notice.

Seriously good!

LOVE IT!. I'm a big boy and love my poutine...Mean poutine was awesome! I've had it in Quebec too so I know my poutine! :)

I would definitely go back and recommend!
Serena
First of all this place claims 'Best' poutine in town, based on my experience today I would have to disagree. Thanks for the craptastic veggie pizza dog with raw onions, hardly any tomato 'pizza' sauce, and cold uncooked veggie dog, which you charged me $2 extra for. Best fail in Vancouver should be your slogan.
FoodinYVR
Green onions??. The lady said the popular items were: fried chicken, philly cheese steak, mean supreme poutine, southern BBQ. The fried chicken is the most popular but it was disappointing. It was okay beer battered fries with little gravy and yellow cheese curds. The batter made it even more filling. My friend coming from Quebec said the cheese curds should be white instead of yellow. I really like the Mean Supreme which comes with a spicy kick. I really don't like the idea that it comes with green onions. It says nothing about green onions on the menu. Every poutine are prepared after the order was made. They did not have yam fries that day. She said they only have it when they are in season. When is that?? If I ever going to come back, I might try the Southern BBQ. I have a feeling that the meaty ones will be better.

YUM!!!. You gotta eat here!.... if your craving Fries or Poutine, you should try these guys!...Friendly Mom n Pop place, take out store front window, Hot beer battered fries, good gravy..... no attitude or too loud 80's rock music and disinterested employees like la belle patate on Davie St....I will return again and again!!!!

I had the classic poutine and it was way too salty and greasy for my taste.

We love going here! Especially if my bf and I feel like pigging out, mean poutine is the way To go! It's massive!! Fried chicken poutine is SOO good! Cheese, fries, gravy= yum!!

Took my little brother to Mean Poutine based solely on the "great" reviews... We are a couple of quebecker and we know our Poutine.. This was alright nothing too special.. Definately better than average, however, I would suggest La Belle Partate on Davie Street... Much better...(Sorry)

Comatose. Literally fell asleep for 5 hours after eating the fried chicken poutine. maybe it was the jet lag though...
Satanists_for_Veal
Fought through the drunken hordes on a Friday night for the promise of fried chicken poutine. The fried chicken Is just Generic frozen buffalo chicken strips, but the gravy, curds, and fries were good, the green onions were a nice touch as well.
Sasha
Love this place. I don't know if it's always because I'm drunk when in eating it, but as far as im concerned it's the best Poutine in Vancouver!

Fried chicken on a poutine!!! Unreal and really good for you
Cheese Me Please
Mouth watering good.. I tried this place on New Years by fluke... there was a huge crowd in front and I wanted to see what this place was all about. The food was beyond belief amazing and I got to meet the owners, whose this huge guy and his dad. I ordered a chicken poutine and my friends ordered a bunch of their gourmet hot dogs. first off it was huge and smothered in toppings... every bite was just as good as the next. My friend ordered this hot dog with cream cheese on it called the zen dog.Their pizza dog and mac n cheese dog are also out of this world good. All in all, we go here probably every weekend. the best part... he is always open!

Mean Poutine is a take-out window serving poutines and hot dogs. There is a small counter on the left hand side where people can stand and eat. We decided to get the Fried Chicken Poutine, the Mama’s Italian Meatballs Poutine, and the Mac and Cheese Dog (As always, our eyes are bigger than our stomachs...Classic hot dog topped with macaroni and cheese It was a big hot dog with simply sausage and mac & cheese on top. Nothing too special, just as you would expect it.

We were starved so we decided to get a couple things even though I’m not the biggest fan of poutine. Mean Poutine has crazy late hours (11am-4am) so you know, at least, that they’ll be open after you stumble home from the bar. Definitely would be better after a night out clubbing and/or drinking. It did the trick for us after our uber long flight...

One taste was all it took and just like that, I was hooked. Standing outside the takeout window just after midnight off of Vancouver’s busiest party street, Granville, I could feel the magic in the air. The first few notes of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing cut through the cold night like a knight saving his damsel from having to make the harrowing intoxicated voyage home without sustenance. I knew something big was about to happen. To the left of the window, a menu features classic as well as the creative. With poutines like philly cheese steak, southern BBQ, fried chicken, mean meatball, and mean supreme, it’s almost difficult to make a choice. Philly cheese s

... Fried Chicken Poutine... not bad; fries not crispy, esp the bits that were drowned in gravy (they were still OK, but it wasn't crispy as advertised...), but the chicken was! (I checked before ordering), chicken was pretty tasty too, although it looked slightly over fried

I was meeting a colleague for lunch and we wanted to try something different. From our individual sources, we heard about a take-away poutine place that was not too far from the office.

...partially a small kitchen in the wall with a glass case. It's run by a nice lady who makes everything by herself and to the order (fresh).
Reviews By Wabby
The taste of the poutine was overall good. The portion was decent as well for $6 including tax, but I think I would have liked it even more if it had more gravy.
Simon
It's a take-out window! There is a counter on the left. For seating, you could sit on the nearby steps or the single bench up the block. The prices (as of the evening of Friday, June 7th) are 50 cents more than what's on the website. The cheese curds are out of a bag. Not sure how that would match up with your definition of "fresh". My Quebecois friend frowned that they weren't white, but yellowish. Although each poutine has a slightly different mix of ingredients on top of the basic $6.50 poutine, most of the time it doesn't really matter because the gravy smothers all the other tastes, unless you isolated them first (e.g., ate a meatball or a chunk of chicken instead of stirring your poutine together). Unless you are paying close attention to what you are eating, your order will probably taste like fries in gravy, plus a $2 or $3 side of whatever else you ordered. Also, the menu doesn't say, but they all come with a sprinkling of green onion. The fries are really decent -- beer batte

On the hunt for more awesome poutine, a VancityBuzz reader mentioned that an alternative to Fritz for late night eats is Mean Poutine on Nelson and Granville. They are just a small little shop, that offer a lot of different flavours, and the price isn’t too bad. Besides the Standard Poutine, they also have Fried Chicken, Philly Cheesesteak, Mean Supreme, Mama’s Meatball, Southern BBQ, and even Candied Yam Poutine. Or you can also build your own. You can get some Hotdogs too. I ordered the Classic Poutine and the Fried Chicken Poutine. The beer bettered fries are fried fresh, so at 5PM, I did have to wait about 15 minutes to get my order. Before bringing the take out to my friends place. I took a look so I can get fresh pictures. The cheese was already very melted, and a lot thinner than the other poutines we’ve had. Because of the batter, the fries kind of resembled KFC fries, where you could see the light airy batter bubble a bit and crisp up. These were quite a bit fatter t
