Review Birds And The Beets - Vancouver

My second time here! A cozy and small cafe in Gastown. ✅ The atmosphere is nice to spend some time with friends and have fun. 🤵‍♀️ You won’t have much contact with the staff as you pay & take your own food & coffee. Anyway, they mostly look neutral to you. Not positive, not negative. 🍞 Before leaving, don’t forget to buy their sourdough loaf. Its fantastic as they cook it inside the store fresh. 🥪 Definitely order Turkey Sandwich as a good option by which you also can test their sourdough. ☕️ The coffee is good, yet not superior. Good to try. Enjoy!👌

Great breakfast, avocado and egg in toast. Delicious bread. Turkey sandwich was full of flavour. Coffee smooth, just beautiful, green tea delicious. Love the vibe if the place and staff really friendly. Thanks. Would definitely come back. Just visiting.

This is a small cute cafe that sells sandwiches and coffee at an affordable price (for once). I got the tofu banh mi, which is a great vegan option and is $9. The sandwich is a good size and should make you full. The flavour was good, I think they used hoisin sauce and a good amount of pickled veg to keep it refreshing. They used a rustic bread over the typical baguette, which it more of a wise sandwich and less crunchy. I do wish that the tofu was thicker, but that’s about it. Unfortunately I didn’t try their coffee, but I do appreciate how they serve both normal and sparkling water. I also like how everything on their menu is under $15. I’ll definitely be coming back to try other items next time!

Awesome cafe & wine bar in Gastown with a selection of coffee, salad and sandwiches. The breakfast sandwich was very big, tasty & great value. I the evenings this spot turns into a cosy wine bar and In the summers you can sit out on the street and enjoy and excellent selection of local and other natural wines.

One of my favorite cafes in Vancouver 💕 I love miso barley bowls, especially grilled veggie, and pickles are the super nice. The ricotta cheese sandwich is amazing too🤍friendly staff, reasonable prices, cozy interior, sunshine, and a good mood

Great atmosphere, music, and amazing Tofu sandwiches. Baking out in the open is probably inconvenient, but really adds to the feel of the cafe, and the drip tray for the water taps are some plant pots!! Great spot

Ambience was great, as was the sandwich I had. Took a bit to get a seat but it seemed more to my bad timing on arrival. Mix of a coffee shop and restaurant as a number of patrons sat way past finishing their meal or coffee to work or read.

I loved the ice latte and the breakfast sandwich had a perfect scrambled egg —Really calming environment, not too loud while I was there, and I loved the ambiance of the corner seat by the front window. Would definitely recommend for brunch in Gastown! Would note though that while there are charging outlets the wifi is a bit spotty, so maybe not the best place to study.

The best vibe in the city. Coffee, food and music are so on point. For me, the perfect trifecta.

Had brunch at Birds and Beets a couple a week or so ago and meant to write a quick review. The brioche with the avacado and poached egg was really good! The roasted vegetable added that extra special zing to the dish. I was really hungry and it was really filling and delicious. The staff were super friendly and efficient. I loved the space, brick walls, the fresh flowers and fresh brewed coffee. I would go back. Loved it!!

Sandy was quite tasty and they were pumping music through vintage Bose 501s...nice work!

Food is as fresh and clean as it gets! We love this place for brunch! The only downfall is the coffee, needs improvements..

This place is under a residence and the staff here like to play their music very loudly in the early morning. Just because you're a business does not exempt you from Vancouver city noise bylaws and I'm going to call the police every morning from now on as asking you folks to be courteous and respectful has gotten me no where

Unreal how disrespectful they are of the people living in the building. Doesn't matter who pays more for rent show respect

The Birds & The Beets is a cute little café located in the historic flatiron-shaped Hotel Europe in Gastown. Given the triangular shape of the building, the shop fronts on both Powell and Alexander Streets (but the main counter area is near the Powell Street entrance). With summer now over and the Vancouver rain starting to return, I picked The Birds & The Beets as one of my final staycation visits for September. Since they open at 7am, this made the perfect place for me to visit for breakfast.

I had that cappuccino, H had the kombucha, and my mother had a drip coffee. Mother and I both had the avocado and poached egg on toast, H had the breakfast bun with pork. Such tender flavourful pork. Such soft, fluffy brioche bread, baked in house. Ask me for a place to brunch, and I would choose the Birds and the Beets again in a heartbeat. Deliciously overpriced.

Owners, Matthew Senecal-Junkeer and Trevor Pruegger took over the old Sea Monstr Sushi spot (across from Soft Peaks Ice Cream). We have been looking forward to this restaurant’s opening. The decor looks like something out of a Pinterest board.

Great sandwiches and friendly staff. Prices were reasonable too.
Had the fish sandwich, jar of pickles, and brioche toast. Everything was really good. Will definitely return.

Bird & the Beets is a cafe that is located in Gastown and they serve up coffee, sandwiches, breakfast and other snacks. We came here on the weekend have a few bites and coffee. One thing I love about shops in Gaston are that beautiful brick walls. It adds so much character to the space. By the counter, there is also taps for water. I love pouring my own water, its so much fun. I’m pretty weird.

Ordered: Macchiato & Charred Veggie Sandwich

Space is comforting, a type of rustic natural warmth oozes from the interior. Lots of bricks, wood, light and plants.

Coffee was well made. Excellent temperature with smooth foam and well balanced milk to coffee ratio.

Sandwich was surprisingly delicious. I wasn't thinking it would be terrible but it definitely exceeded my expectation for a sandwich at a café. The veggie sandwich I got had roasted squash, a decent spread of hummus, lovely purple pickled beets (?), apples and a vibrant green pesto. The sandwich looked super appealing and tasted even better. Bread was fresh, beautiful crust and crunch, soft interior.

This place is on top of my list for go to cafes in the gastown region.

Good sandwiches for lunch and a great open space to gather with a few friends, hang out for the afternoon and enjoy some good food. I enjoy that they change the menu up and the dishes are simple yet flavourful. The price is a little higher than it should be, for lunch servings at least, but as a whole experience, it's worth it.

Sucha an amazing space! A unique combination of a flower shop and lunch spot. Large open windows allow for great light and an opportunity to people watch on the busy streets of gastown. Their sandwiches are to die for! This is a go to if you are in vancouver

This is the most inviting and beautifully decorated Cafe I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I am so drawn to it and will most certainly be spending a lot more of my afternoons there! Great service, lovely coffee and the space is immaculate. Well done guys!

I really like the decor, nice open windows and pretty plants. They also have plugs so you can probably sit and study here for hours. The tea looked pretty and the flowers were natural. No sugar added, and felt like fresh quality flowers not like the typical tea you get in the stores. The brioche tasted freshly made and was warm, chewy and the apple butter on top was just the right sweetness to go with the brioche.

It is a beautiful space and is very tastefully decorated. From what I gathered ahead of time, they also make their own preserves and bread, which is something I was looking forward to. In addition, they also carry the excellent teas from Cultivate and serve kombucha. Needless to say, I really wanted to love this place. I brought my friend here for lunch a couple of months ago and we both promptly ordered the poached egg with avocado mash...

What followed was one of the most bitter gastronomic disappointments. Atop a thick piece of uneventful toast (akin to those you see in some Bubble Tea joints), there was a generous serving of cold, mashed avocado. The poached egg followed with a serving of house pickles.

What was so unappealing to my senses was the unsymbiotic relationship between the egg and avocado (two of the most decadent ingredients that could have been so harmonious together). The gooey mix of the super-soft-boiled slimy egg white with the fridge-cold avocado was nauseating and frankly felt unsafe to eat, as the whole sandwich tasted cold and soggy; I will not make the unappetizing analogy of what this conjured up in my mind, but I am certain, I will never order that dish again - it was repulsive. I was so disappointed.

The only reason I am giving this place a 2.5 rating is because it is local and chic; but honestly, I am not sure I will be back!

I first stumbled upon The Birds & the Beets in the spring while it was still under construction. Situated on the edge of Gastown in the former Sharks & Hammers/Sea Monstr Sushi location, the coffeeshop/cafe finally opened its doors in the summer and I was eager to pop in for a visit.

An appealing and positively bright spot, The Birds & the Beets is an easy and inviting destination to spend your coffee break or any part of your day.

Been excited to visit this place since I caught word (through ig, where else) of its opening. I was finally able to check it out this summer. I'm a sucker for huge spaces so that's mostly where the 3.5 rating goes to.

Food/Drinks: Coming into Birds and Beets, you are greeted with the smell of freshly toasted bread. Though I didn't get any food this visit, I'd come back to give their limited, yummy looking (and drool inducing) menu a try. I had the iced soy latte, which didn't really stand out too much to me.

Ambience: YAY. Would be back for this for sure. When you first come in, the front appears small but lengthens towards the back and then widens to offer you a visual of polished wooden tables small enough for a heart to heart talk or meeting, and big enough to have a group catch up. The tables are well spaced so there's no danger of being overheard. Great for creative work. (or any work with tons of paper to lay out)

Also, it's located in Gastown, which it's a pretty hip neighbourhood to start with, with many other choices for food and drinks around the area to make it a whole day affair.

BONUS: They sell beautiful flowers by @wildbunch. And each table has simple flowers in brown vases. :)

Service: Not too bad. Nothing amazing the time I visited.

Transport: Take the Canada Line, get down at Waterfront Station. Walk down Water street until you get to Water St and Powell. It's right beside Bambudda.

What a cute little spot! They really care about everything they put out and their staff are so friendly! Oh and it they a sparkling water tap and grow their own micro greens. Yeah, you heard me! I wouldn't get their Madeleines tho, not my favourite

It's not easy working in Gastown without dreading what to eat every day for lunch. Everything around here is overpriced and/or not particularly "healthy". Today found this new place had popped up and gave it a go.

Ordered the Turkey ($9.5) and a small salad ($3) to go.

The salad is pretty small in portion... "kid friendly portion".
The turkey was deliciously tender and full of flavor; some pieces of fat werent trimmed off; awesome chewy bread with a smidgen of sourness ..maybe a sourdough? ( but definitely need some strong teeth to get thru the dough )... love the pile of beets.

Overall good sandwich, friendly service..but tag a side salad along, it does get pricey.

ROUND 2:
Came back next week and ordered the same Turkey sandwich. Originally I had thought this sandwich was a great healthy offering amongst Gastown's greasy lunch menus...not a fan this time around coz they've now modified their recipe. Previously, the naturally sweet, beet shreds had played 2nd fiddle to the tender roasted turkey but today, it's been replaced by a mound of deep fried shredded beets! My first bite had me digging thru the sandwich thinking i had been given a wrong order...it was just greasy and the bitterness (similar to deep fried shallots) just threw the whole taste profile off. Beets are meant to taste like beets, not shallots! The bread today was bit tougher to get thru also. Next time will try the pork.

Our Twitter feed had murmurings of a new food-and-coffee focused café that was opening soon – apparently they were serving local coffee by Bows & Arrows and Matchstick. My ears were burning and I was eager to find out their operating hours, but all I had was an address and no phone number. So a week ago, I found myself going old school. I carefully combed down my cowlick, shined up my shoes all pretty and politely knocked on the door at 55 Powell St., which looked like it was still in the middle of construction. A cute girl (who said she’s a girlfriend of one of the owners) got down from a ladder, wiped her hands on her jeans and told me they’d delayed their opening but would open soon, after clearing some permits.

Won't be coming back. I ordered the avocado and poached egg sandwich and the guacamole was an unappetizing olive green colour. The bottom brioche bun was gross and soggy. I told the barista about it and he didn't seem to appreciate the feedback at all. His response was "yeah?" Unapologetic and disrespectful. Talk about customer service.
