Review The Poke Guy - Vancouver

Stephanie Chiao
I love love love getting poke from here. Friendly staff, ingredients are always fresh and portion are good. My favourite dressing is carrot ginger. Such good value compare to other poke places downtown.

Awesome little spot! Enjoyed some fresh tuna poke. Would definitely revisit again. Good variety of toppings and they have choices for those who don’t like seafood such as chicken and tofu!

Massive portions is right. I built my own tuna bowl and went all in with their toppings. The server was super nice, the tuna was fresh, and the bowl itself was delicious. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for something to satisfy your poke craving.

Exceeded my expectations! A large size portion of fresh and tasty ingredients. Got myself the Lomi Lomi Chopped Salmon Bowl and enjoyed every bite of it.

Perfect build-a-bowl vegan meal option in the downtown core. Cute decor, nice layout, effective and friendly staff, good tunes and great food. Plus, they have yerba mate!

portions were big! i ordered the snack bowl and it was huge. fish was fresh - i had the atlantic salmon and scallop. i have had better scallop at other places but this was good. lots of options for toppings, dressing and crunchy garnishes. all really fresh. speedy service. the spam musubi was sadly a little disappointing; the spam was a bit over cooked but rice had good flavour.

went to this place twice in one week! the staff are so friendly and helpful and the toppings are so fresh and delicious! I made my own small bowl and it cost less than $12

The line up is big and can be slow, but the food is amazing. Everything is fresh, tasty and the prices are reasonable. It's a small place but cozy, it's a little hidden, the entrance is not so obvious but you'll see it once you go down the stairs. 10/10 for the food and service

This place is amzing! Fish and all the toppings were very fresh and tasted great:) Price is good. Portion size is also very good. Very friendly staff. I loved every bit of my dish, especially enjoyed the giant chunks of mango and friend onion crunchy bits as a topping and the wasabi mayo that actually had a good kick to it. Delicious ! Will definitely go back next time I'm in Vancouver.

I've never had poke before so I went in with an open mind. I told the lovely lady at the start this and she gave me great advice along the way. Soon I had this large bowl filled with a million amazing ingredients. The flavour was different with every bite and there was not one bite I didn't love. I will definitely be back. Please open one in Langley!!

The poke is a reminiscent of poke we had in honolulu. Fresh fish, friendly staff/owner and generous serving. Sauce is just perfect amount and not overpowering the fish.
Kenneth Kam
Extreme long lineup during lunch time. Big portion seems a bit $, its bascially a dice up chirashi sushi bowl with more sides.

We were staying at the delta hotel around the corner and I saw thus place on Google maps. We went right when it open, thankfully because right after us, people just started pouring in. Their bowl was so fulfilling and so yummy. We came here for lunch on our last day and I was so bummed to go home just because I knew we couldn't come back for a while. If you're in town this place is worth going out of your way for.

Fresh fish and friendly people. I've had at least 2 dozen types of poke in my life and this place definitely is up there. Next time I would do fewer toppings (over zealous) and no extra sauce. Go before noon to beat the line up.

Came here for the first time late this afternoon for a healthy to-go meal to take to school. Staff were super friendly and helpful in deciding to get and explaining some of the different ingredients to the uninitiated. I got the "small guy" with ahi on salad, with some edamame, seaweed, cucumber, cilantro and pea shoots topped with the sriracha-mayo dressing and crushed wasabi peas. It was phenomenal, and all my classmates who felt gross and bloated from A&W, Tim Horton's and 7-11 were super jealous. This will definitely become my go-to place on school days!

Fantastic! Some of the best poke I've ever eaten. Can't wait to go back!

The staff were really friendly and helpful with choices. The atmosphere reminded me of Hawaii and great location .The food was delicious and amazing on the palette Really an enjoyable experience for my son and I. Will definately go again that's for sure.

Super fresh and tasty Hawaiian. Friendly crew esp with newbies like myself. Would happily have it for lunch everyday.

Loved the choices you can make to customize the size, flavors and quantity of poke you want.

Where's 6 or 10 stars?. Their POKE is the poke bomb. Customer service and attention to the fine details is where owners Angela and Jak excel. This is a must try and vancouver needs to support small business like this. Hurrah!
Carolyn Friesen
My third time there and just as delicious as the first and second time
Jonathan Pettibone
Fantastic- where has this been all my life? So many options and flavors.

A bit confusing to order for a first timer but delicious!

The Poke Guy stands out from the sea of poke restaurants in Vancouver because they are the first and only poke restaurant in Canada that is partnered with Ocean Wise. Their fish comes in fresh daily and because it’s such a perishable item, once they sell out for the day, that’s it!. In true aloha spirit, they are hoping to spread more joy with their newly introduced Breakfast Platters. These epic platters feature all the Hawaiian staples for breakfast – Kalua Pork, Spam, eggs and your choice of three types of poke. To add a fun twist they’ve also included savoury potato waffles and avocado flowers! For a sweet end, they’ve added Haupia Chia Pudding and imported Hawaiian Sun drinks straight from Honolulu to pair with this delicious breakfast.

2016 seemed to be the year that poke took a real foothold in Vancouver with countless poke shops popping up all over the place. The problem, however, is that most of the places calling themselves “poke” shops really weren’t staying true to the original poke from Hawaii. To me, you need to have your seafood marinated in the special sauces to taste like the real thing… otherwise, you’re just eating sashimi. Fortunately, The Poke Guy seems to have figured that out. They’ve also figured out that, while toppings are great, the real star of the show is the seafood… and it has to be fresh. So don’t be surprised if they run out of your favourite dish because they don’t make huge batches… once they’re sold out – they’re sold out for the day.

Out of the half dozen or so poke places I've visited in Van, Poke Guy tops them all. Not only do they support the ethical treatment of seafood with Oceanwise but they season the fish perfectly. All the toppings are of high quality, they bring in fresh seafood each day and stay open only until they sell out (or 5pm if it lasts). The dressings are all made in house, I highly recommend the carrot ginger puree.

Normally I wouldn't tip at a DIY style restaurant, but the staff was extremely high spirited and helpful, they were more than happy to serve me and the other customers and didn't try to push drink sales or add-ons. Will be back soon!

I have never had a bad experience ordering here at lunch. Sure, it's busy and takes up my whole lunch break waiting in line sometimes but it is SO worth it because this place actually knows their shit when it comes to Poke. With their well seasoned fish, delicious toppings and a wide assortment the food always raises the bar for Poke in Vancouver. Not to mention, their staff is SUPER nice. The guy that scoops the fish at lunch is literally just the most passionate poke chef ever and the girl in the glasses who does cash is so sweet. They always give good recommendations to whatever protein you decide to get with your bowl. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.
Nom.nom.nom.
This place offers different daily features for you to pick then you select your base of salad or rice with toppings like seaweed, edemame etc. All in all is about $12-15 depending on how many extras you want. The fish comes seasoned and sauced which I found super salty. Maybe I'm biased because I see poke as just overpriced unwrapped sushi but this place isn't bad if you're looking for poke places to try.

It's not traditional Hawaiian poke, but its all we've got! The seafood here is fresh- I love the ahi tuna. It's a healthier eat out option for the health conscious peeps. It's definitely good, but for some reason...not memorable. Will I be returning ? Sure. But I won't go out of my way for it.

Summary: excellent service, good poke, large selection, great quality

Ordered: small spicy albacore tuna.

I was very impressed by the outstanding service at the poke shop. The staff who helped me was super enthusiastic and patient. He was very knowledgeable about the food and have me recommendations for what to choose for my sides.

Fair priced, satisfying portion. Their fish is all wild and marinated. Tons of sides to choose from. Love that you can choose regular rice, brown rice, or even make it salad.

Ambience and space was alright. It was situated half underground. The vibe was more for a quick bite.

Will definitely return though!

Staff is friendly and out of all the poke places I've tried this place is the best so far. The owner is very nice. Highly recommend this place for good Poke!

Opened just two months ago, The Poke Guy is another eatery supporting the latest poké craze in Vancouver. Located at 420 Richards Street and just about a block away from the Waterfront Skytrain Station, The Poke Guy offers build-your-own poké bowls. One notable mention about The Poke Guy is they are Canada’s first and only poké restaurant partnering with Ocean Wise. Hence, the poké they serve is sustainable. Yesterday, my friend and I visited The Poke Guy just about an hour before they closed at 5 pm.

2016 was the year of poke mania, which all these places that are either open or slated to open this year:. Ohana Poké (Richmond Night Market). Westcoast Poké. Pokéritto. Poké Time. This list doesn’t include existing restaurants that already serve poke. Oka-San Japanese Kitchen on Fraser comes to mind. It’s no exaggeration to say that poke is the most hyped-up food product of 2016.

Ordered the ahi tuna with one scoop of brown rice
Price $$
Not really filling.. quite a small lunch in my opinion..
Overall it tastes good! But kinda pricey
Constant Cravings
The Poke Guy is the latest newcomer to the poke scene. They are closer to Gastown on Richards and Hastings Street so if you work around here you don’t need to go as far for your poke fix now. They’re right next to a barber shop. This also used to be a waffle place that flopped. I had considered trying them but I was just put off by their lack of ambiance and decor and based on the pictures of the food, they could’ve worked on presentation more. Anyway, I’m glad The Poke Guy took over!
Picky Diner
The spicy sockeye, spicy ahi, and tako (octopus) all tasted very fresh, and the enhancements from pineapple, mango, seaweed salad, cilantro and the Furikake powder were all working together. However at the end of the meal I felt kind of meh. So I get it, a poke joint is pretty much like Chipotle, a fancy fast food joint with lighter and healthier options with quality ingredients. But I think if they can provide some more pre-designed creations rather than having the most of the experience DIY, it would be much more exciting. Value wise, I don't think I would pay more than $15 for this again - although it was not bad, it just didn't give me a lot of culinary excitement and pleasure.

SO I'm loving the whole Poke thing and this is the next on my list. A couple of things to be aware of:

1. You can't really see the menu until you get to the till. At this point, you've probably been in line for 15 min and it becomes a bit late to leave if you don't really like what's on offer.

2. It is Pricey ($22 for Poke and a coke... no joke)

So how is the food? Actually, it's excellent. Tasty, original and traditional all at once.

It's the other stuff that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Yum!!!! They just opened and they are strictly traditional Hawaiian which I enjoyed. Different experience from other poke places but still tasty. Decor is nice inside as well. Loving all this poke in the city! Can't wait to try other ones !
