Review Jolly's Indian Bistro - Vancouver

Corbin Saleken
I love Indian food. I've eaten at numerous Indian restaurants in the city, and Jolly's is by far my favourite. I eat here/get food from here at least once a month. Everything is astoundingly delectable (seriously, just thinking about it makes my mouth water). His naan is particularly great.

The food is astounding. The chef here loves his job, you can actually tell in the dedication he puts in each dish. And he prepares everything by himself! I cannot recommend this place enough. Your taste buds will thank you for such a treat. Seriously, go there, try any dish, and you'll fall in love with the place. The ambiance is very nice as well, and it's not expensive.

Used Groupon. Awesome deal. My son loves the food. Was here back in 2016. Wow. Good good food and service

This place is a bit pricier for the quality of food, although it’s probably due to the location. I’d say food was decent, but lacked (hot) spice and was a bit sweeter than what I’m used to. I did like how the food didn’t seem too oily. Although I’m not of Indian origin, I do feel that there are more authentic places you can find in Vancouver. This place was pretty average, so I wouldn’t really recommend coming here unless if you’re craving Indian food and it’s convenient to do so.

No value for money tbh. Don't order 'spicy'. The meaning of spicy is to simply add red chillies to the curry.. for the life of me, I don't get it. Anyways, the curry was so-so and so are the appetizers.. loaded with sauce and quite messy. I do not recommend if you need authentic Indian food.

The restaurant was busy when we got there. There was only one waitress and she was overwhelmed with take out orders and dine in customers. It took a while for us to get served but we understood the circumstances. The owner came out to the kitchen and helped. But the food was excellent and we got a few extra items of food for our wait. Once the rush was over everything calmed down. By that time we finished our meal, were the last people at the restaurant. The rush was over. It was only a two hour window. Overall the food was excellent and we had a great meal. I gave it 4 stars because of the wait.

The Rogan Josh had plenty of spices to start a Bollywood party in my mouth. Wife thought it's a bit salty, but my less discerning pallet thinks it's just right when complemented with naan or rice. Lamb was really tender, no chewy bits. I do prefer cuts with a little bit of fat. Our order was more on the lean side. It came with two small containers of basmati rice, lightly dressed salad and chick peas which was really good. We ordered the amritsari fish and coconut shrimp. But since our order was for to go, the food lost some their crunchiness due to the air tight containers and steam. Fish was flaky and well seasoned, same goes with the shrimp which was not overcooked. Both came with potato patties and a slice of lime. They cook their naan last after all orders are ready, so it stays fresh and hot. Naan was soft, chewy and very warm. It was coated with garlic butter on side. We enjoyed our meal and had plenty of left overs for later. Serving size was just right, price was average. Appetizers are less $10.

Very cozy and nice Indian restaurant. The service was quick and the staff very nice, not overwhelming like in some places where they come around every 5 min. The butter chicken is not much in quantity indeed BUT it is really really good!! The naan are so good too! We went on a Saturday night around 8pm and did not have to wait for a table. I recommande that place 100%. Prices are fair too.

Sunday evening & needed a place to eat. Jolly’s was recommended by a friend around a year ago but hadn’t been in this hood for a while. <br/>There was a table free so I was seated right away. I was charmed by the decor, rich colours on the walls and the ambience. Made me feel I was on a getaway far from home. Staff were very attentive. <br/><br/>I ordered a stuffed naan filled with cauliflower as an appetizer. It came quickly and OMG it came with the Delhi 6 Daal-seriously the BEST Daal I’ve ever had in my life. <br/>Then butter chicken with salad, rice and naan. All wonderful. Two pots of a ginger spiced chai tea and I was stuffed. And my bill came to only $23.09! 😍 <br/>I cannot wait to come back and bring my friends. Next time I will have the Delhi 6 Daal Entree and I want to try the Rosewater Vanilla Milkshake. There are at least 7 things on the menu I’m looking forward to trying! <br/>

This place is great. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, and while the servers can sometimes seem overwhelmed, the service is generally good.<br/>We usually order a meat thali (a meal combo), which has fantastic value. It's about 20$ for 3 dishes of curry, a naan, a samosa, a drink, and a dessert. We usually split it between the two of us and still have some leftovers.<br/>It starts out with a big samosa covered in chickpea curry and mango chutney. The samosa is hot, crispy, and flavourful, and the chickpea curry is also very tasty. All the dishes are also very good; the thali comes with lamb curry, chicken curry, and butter chicken. All are delicious, but the lamb curry is my favourite (I even like the butter chicken, even though I'm usually not a fan). You get a fair portion of each dish, and all of them are flavourful, with high-quality meat and an appropriate level of spice (we usually get a level 2 or 3). The naans are soft and fresh, and the rice pudding you get for dessert is very nice too! You even get a beer included with the meal (which I sub out for an awesome mango lassi since I don't like beer).<br/>Whenever we go there we get a great meal at a very nice price, in a lovely little restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. I basically have only good things to say about Jolly's, and if it were closer to my place I would go there all the time! I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice Indian restaurant.

The 1st time we tried this place with Groupon deal. Surprisingly, unlike many other groupon featured restaurant, Jolly's is serving good food. I guess it is the location that made them need to go through the discount service to find more customer.<br/><br/>The samosa dish is great as it comes with hot/ mango sauce plus chickpea. Ginger lemonade is not on the dinner menu but you can still order it . They used fresh ginger in it which I loved! If you dunno what to order, try the thali ; it gives you serval dishes on one plate.

So, before I start this review I will say Jolly's has good food, likely the best Indian in this part of kitsilano, however, what really brings it down a notch is the terrible service. As well, I will preface the complaint with the fact that my wife is a chef in the city and I know to not come in right at closing because that it a low class, uncaring move. <br/><br/>So, for the second week in a row I have had a butter chicken craving and jolly's is only a block away from my house, I have gone in at 9 -9:20 to grab an order of a staple, butter chicken, naan and rice. Both times I've been ignored by terrible servers for 5 minutes and then been told that they were closed will not serve me, even though they had clients in the dining room with fresh food being brought out of the kitchen. <br/><br/>Every single website with your hours, not to mention asking the servers personally, says you close at 10. I am not coming in 5, 10 or even half an hour before closing. Get it together, the service is abysmal and the staff are rude.<br/><br/>The only saving grace would be the food, which I have absolutely not received.<br/><br/>Frustrating to say the least.<br/>

Jolly's is one of my favourite Indian restaurants in town. It has a nice atmosphere, and the food is excellent. I recommend their thali plates - great value!

We went there before going to boat show. It took couple of minutes to get to a nice seat close to the window. Very friendly and nice staff. They were fully packed. We ordered one appetizer, butter chicken, beef roghangoosh the food was amazing but it came after 46'!!!! Damn too late. We could not enjoy the food at all cuz it was too late that we had to leave as fast as possible. If they could separate the service for take out, it could probably help a lot to improve their service. The food is highly recommended but the service needs to improve. By the way it's too hot there, wear something light:)

This place can be hit and miss sometimes but tonight's dishes were amazing. We started with pakoras, then Lamb saag and Ali gobi. Good flavor, great service and just a chill vibe all around. <br/><br/>I'd go back!

Really nice room with cushions and candles.  Lovely service and some interesting touches like, spinach salad with the mains.  The starter pakora was very different than any pakora I have had and it was delicious.  Big chunky thing with loads of fresh spinach surrounded by a pool of chick peas in a sauce which seemed to have mango puree in it.  Really good.  <br/><br/>Mains were very fresh and flavourful, but (and this is the big but!) really over salted.  The lamb rogan josh, in particular, was so salty it was, on reflection, almost inedible.  I say almost, because I did eat it because I was hungry and it was good, but kept feeling that it was amazing how much salt it had.  I'm no salt nazi.  I like salt, so this was pretty extreme and it was the only reason I would hesitate to go back, which is a shame.<br/><br/>To end on a positive, naan breads were excellent.  Fluffy, fresh and crunchy.

Wow the Samosa was amazing. We didn't expect for it to come with mango chutney. Presentation is great and food is delicious. Atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy and festive. They have comfy cushions and great customer service. It's $20 for a sampler, and you literally can try their most delicious foods. <br/><br/>I would come back again.

I saw a Groupon for nearly 50% off at this restaurant, and with the good reviews, I thought I’d try it out. It’s a medium sized restaurant which is decorated very nicely with lanterns, lit candles and drapery to cover those ugly ceilings that we see in a lot of the places here with pipes and unfinished look. The colours matched, and it was a warm soothing atmosphere.
Picky Diner
I took my mom to Jolly’s Indian Bistro after a walk at Khatsahlano Street Party on West 4th. After having such a wonderful dinner, I have to say this is so far the best restaurant I have found on GROUPON. Their dishes were fantastic, showing the masterful use of various herbs and spices in the spirit of traditional Indian Cuisine, as well as mixing in touches of contemporary elements, to enhance the overall dining experience. It was not merely Indian cuisine, it was also Modern Cuisine that is packed with sublime flavours of both complexity and refinement.

Very cozy and romantic. Food was awesome!

Meat Thali.... Massive and Delicious. Came with Lamb, Mumbai Chicken, Butter Chicken, Naan Rice Pomp Dessert. Family of three went couples of times to Jolly's.<br/>We all love the atmosphere and service.<br/>Food are hot and efficient service.<br/>although there are only on street parking and we do not mind to go back more dining

Decent food, Bad service.... This was our first time trying out this restaurant and I must say<br/>I was really unimpressed with their service.<br/>It began with bad first impression when we first walked into the restaurant.<br/>The door was open and I saw two waitresses looking at themselves in the mirror<br/>and just chatting. When we walked in, one of the girls said<br/>"We will be open in five minutes", and refused us to come in.<br/>This already gave me a slight bad impression considering that it was only less than<br/>five minutes to opening, they should have let us sit down and offered something to drink<br/>instead of having customer to come back.<br/>Now the experience was not all bad as the food was decent, however they are pretty slow.<br/>It took at least 40 minutes to get our first appetizers. Considering only one or two chefs working<br/>in the kitchen, and the restaurant was busy we waited patiently but I do not recommend you<br/>to walk in if you are SUPER hungry. Now this was the deal breaker when we were about to make<br/>payment. My bf purchased a groupon deal and the deal was "$25 for $50 worth of dine-in Indian cuisine for four or more". Before we ordered the food, the waitress asked us if we are using the groupon deal.<br/>Now, we were a party of 3, and when the waitress asked the question, we showed the groupon deal<br/>and she was aware that this was the specific deal we will be using. When we were about to pay,<br/>the other waitress came to take payment, and she said "this is for group of four, so we cannot accept this."<br/>This would have been okay as the groupon deal does state that it is a group of 4 or more. However,<br/>it did not seem justified as the other waitress asked us if we will be using the groupon deal and we<br/>even showed her this specific listing before ordering. Nothing was communicated to us when she knew<br/>there were only 3 of us dining as well. I asked the waitress the other waitress failed to inform that to us,<br/>and at the end of the day, their solution was that she assumed we knew and they only took half of our group<br/>on deal, and took $25 off this time and next time when we come back. I do not even want to go back<br/>second time to use the groupon deal considering their bad service. I do not normally post reviews, however<br/>not only me, but all of us were unimpressed with their overall service at the end of the day and I hope<br/>this helps to better their service for their business.
Haha
They are super slow!!!... Sitting for one hour without even an appetizer ready. Seems they have to serve one table completely before start to serve the next table. This frustrated me so much....

Excellent! Definitely recommended. Took my mom out for an early Mother's day supper and we were very impressed. Excellent food and incredibly friendly people. Eggplant masala was an immediate favourite and for desert, the ras malai was delicious. They were also happy to replace our orders when we forgot to mention that we didn't want cilantro. Never have we gotten a better vibe from the staff of a restaurant. It seemed to be a common theme but count yourself especially lucky to eat here if your hostess is a friendly, smiling blonde woman who looks you in the face.<br/><br/>Nick Knutson

Love the atmosphere. Bought a groupon for Jolly's a while back and decided to go before it expired and i must say their service is superb. I loved the atmosphere right when you step into the restaurant. the aromatic scent and the friendly staff made us feel very welcomed. We ordered the butter chicken and the cod curry which was delicious. however i wouldnt say the best. i still really liked the place though. i would still recommend Jolly's to anyone who loves indian food as much as i do.

Worst...... We were 12 people all together. Lets start with beginning. We ask serving girl for serting up the table but from beginning her response was negative. We had to talk with the owner and so called chef Mr jolly. Finally after 40 min she sets up.the table. Now starts the real story we ordered some starters. We had ordered 4 pakoras, 3 samosas and we got 3 pakoras and 1 samosa. Taste was really poor.I had tried pakora of vij's indian restaurant.this was nothing. Then we ordered main course. I still remember, we ordered it 8 30 and we got our food at 10..it ws. So embarrasing...People coming after us got their food earlier..Mr jolly U R toally IRResponsible owner. When we asked why is it so?? She says ur order is so big... DoEs it MEAN WE SHOULD GET OUR FOOD LAST?????? WHEN food arrived we had no mood to eat. He made all food in hurry. Evert thing we noticed was less in quantity and for sure worst in taste. All gravies were like water. Meat content was so less to be charged 15 bucks. On top.of that we ordered garlic nans and we had dry n old hard nans those....at billing time we got our bill 335 dollars. I knew where we were while ordering..our assumption was $250.. when i cheked our food. There were plenty mistakes. Even with take out, when we reached home i found there were no stuffed nans for which i paid 15 bucks. I strongly Recommend not to try this restaurant. owner looks selfish and trying to grabe as much as money possible. In busy times, I sae there were one girl outside and one Indian boy inside as his staff..how CAN U SERVE 25 PEOPLE WITH SO LESS STAFF. ??? I Will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN....NEVER EVER... THIS WAS MY WORST EXP EATING IN INDIAN RESTAURANT....

Takeout: good naan considering it endured a 20ish mins walk back. Malabari chicken was very, very tasty: just enough heat for the mildly heat tolerant white person, and super fragrant with cilantro. Much "gravy" was sopped up with naan. Didn't care as much for paneer dosa. It was a mix of bland and very hot (the lentils draped over were quite hot). Admittedly also gets mushy after such a walk to the plate, so that part isn't their fault. I'd try more items.

The best Indian food...and I would know, since I'm Indian ;) There's always a long line to get in, the service is slow, and the restaurant is so tiny that the tables are only about a foot apart...but the food is still great!

Excellent food. Service was slow although very friendly (they were super busy). It was worth the wait.

Goid food but had to wait 35 mins for table. Service is slow

Love this place!. Wonderful food, (the paneer was perfect, and the okra dish was even more delicious the next day for lunch!) friendly (and fast!) staff and just a cool vibe! I can't wait to go back!

Yummy food, sucky service. The food here is good, no doubt about it. Very tasty but the service is seriously lacking!!! It took them more than half an hour to bring us our drinks, a bellini that is not frozen.. waitress explained and I asked if it was still pureed peach which she said yes.. OK, no biggy if not "frozen" BUT when it came, it had a peach cordial or something, no puree'd peach at all. When the food came, the waitress dumped and ran again. You could never get her attention to complain and we never were asked whether the food was good, whether our drinks was ok or anything. It was a little busy and two waitressses so at first I had compassion and felt a bit sorry for them but upon reflecting on the night and voicing my concerns to my husband later in the evening.. realized I was not over reacting. The service was exceptionally poor and we waited forever for our food.... <br/>Will I go back? NO I wont. The food is tasty but not worth the poor service OR the long waits! I cant remember when last dinner took an hour and 40 minutes... to have 2 entrees.

Not Jolly at all. Having had the worst Indian vegetarian food of my life last night here, it was a shock to see the positive reviews here. Something must have happened here. The dosa were the worst I've seen and tasted: mushy, a thick sweet crepe covered in a bland sauce. The same blandness and lack of character 'distinguished' the vegetarian thali, the accompanying naan of which was dry and slightly burnt. I will not recommend this muck parading as something it isn't and certainly will never go back. The server had a lot of attitude, and the overall experience was unpleasant. Crud rather than curd at this deplorable venue.

Great value. I ordered the meat thali, which included samosas, chickpeas, 3 curries, rice, naan, pappadums, beer and dessert for $20. They were very generous portions - i even had left overs after lunch the next day and there was no shortage of meat in the dishes. Having said that the quality of the sauces was only average, and VERY heavy handed on the salt. The samosa and the naan were both delicious. Still, if it's value for money you're after this is a good choice.

Best Indian in Van. This is by far my favorite Indian restaurant in Van. I've lived in Pakistan and India and love the food. The food at Jolly's is fresh, full of flavor and does not taste as though it was from yesterdays leftovers, as is the case with so many other Indian restaurants in the city. I just wish I lived closer !

Best indian food in Vancouver. I have been to a lot of Indian restaurants in Vancouver and this is the best! The food is authentic and delicious. It is also very affordable. The service is kind of slow, and I have showed up on a few occassions and they have lost my reservation. All in all though I will defininately keep going back.

Always good been there twice also ordered out a few times Jolly has never let me down

An exceptional food experiance!. We've been to Jolly's several times and keep thinking I should post something on the extraordinary Indian food experience that is Jolly's. The awkward little wait space at the entry door is diminished by a 5 minute for a table and unrelentingly friendly service.<br/>IMHO nothing goes better with Indian than beer, I ordered a kingfisher. For those unfamiliar, most Indian dishes are served tapas style, although plates arrive with salad with a delicious mango dressing, and basmati rice. We ordered the Madrasi Prawns,<br/>Lamb Kabobs, and the Paneer Jalfrezi. The lamb was succulent, melt in your mouth, spiced to perfection. The Prawns tender, a little buttery perhaps? The Paneer is exceptional here. A little softer, not over cooked, vegetables al dente. The Naan is fluffy and arrived warm at our table. They say the key to Indian cooking is in the spices and here, Jolly is the great master. An exceptional food experience in a neighbourhood atmosphere. We'll be back.
Crystal
The service is SO slow!! (even with a reservation) Unfortunately this restaurant has great flavors/food, a friendly server, and enjoyable atmosphere... but the extremely slow service is why we won't be back. It has potential but definitely needs to invest in another server and a few additional kitchen staff! Price is very reasonable for the quality/value of the food, but I would rather pay more for efficient service.

Great Indian food, in fact dollar for dollar some of the best I have had anywhere in Vancouver. It starts with quality ingredients (hand butchered meats in-house), and finishes with great taste! To make it an even easier decision to spend your hard earned $ there...the owner is an amazingly nice human being. If you live close...go often, if you don't make the trek it's worth it!

Great food, loved it.. Food: 4.5/5<br/>Value for money: 4/5<br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Ambience: 4.5/5
Wild_fire56
The food was good but not worth the 30 minute wait for appetizers and and additional 20 after we finished the appys. They only have 2 wait staff who are usually too busy running around to even greet you until after you have waited 20 minutes or more for a table. There is also no entrance so you are waiting literally 1 foot away from a table who is trying to enjoy their meal. NOr worth it.
The_eugene
Alright but.... It took us over 40 minutes to get our mains on the table. We both had Talli plates, M. had the veg, I had the meat. It comes with appetizer, drink, dessert. Appetizer was samosa, fairly fresh, great flavour, and in a sauce with chickpeas that worked well, but the samosa itself was cold in the middle. The mains were average. The butter chicken was very tomatoey and had quite a bit of lemon in it. The lamb and chicken were pretty bland. Same was the story on the veg end of things with an almost burnt flavour on the gobi, and frankly nothing stood out as: "hey, this is good, if I came back here, I'd order a plate of this". On the bright side, their rose-petal milk shake is lovely and the mango lassi very enjoyable. On the not-so-bright, the drinks won't save them overall.

Jolly indeed!. Great service, excellent food all in a tastefully decorated space... what more could one ask?

Liked the food it tasted good but be aware this us very small place and they do not take reservations on weekends ! The wait was long when I came on a Saturday at 530pm waited for 45 min. There dis not seem to be any order to the line as they were taking my name down and the server never assured me who I would be after or how long the wait was. Although they dis feel bad for the wait so they gave all of us waiting in line a pakora to nibble on. The food is tasty but is pricy for the amount that you get. Would go again but maybe only on weeknight

Jolly Good!! Not so much. Good food, good service, pleasant environment, good vibes, jolly jolly good. Now, January 2014. We originally went to Jolly's by way of a discount coupon and we thoroughly enjoyed, so much so that we returned and took guests. Our opinion changed radically upon that final visit. The food was terrible, cold, old and very very late to the plate. It took about 45 minutes before we were served after waiting about 15 minutes to order. So an hour before the meal was presented. This is a small place. You can see the kitchen from any table. We waited and waited. Our two guests were hungry young men who were very appreciative of getting any food after such a long wait. The Samosas were just terrible, like dry dead pastry can be stuffed with stale cold and old veggies. Cutlery, plates and glasses were dirty. The time we invested on a Thursday evening in this fiasco compelled our stay. Finally we paid and left never to return.
Icis
Waited an hour after seating to get meal. All the server said to us was "I know you've been waiting for a long time, but we were backed up in the kitchen right when you guys came in. Your food should be out soon and it will be good." After another 15 mins our food came. Food was good but we waited so long for the food we didn't care since the table that came in with us got food half an hour before us.

Authentic Indian. Love the lamb rogan Josh.

Jolly's Bistro. A special find! Super food at super prices!

Haute Bistro Fare Meets Indian Chic.. Nestled between nail salons and video rental stores on West 4th and Bayswater lies Jolly's, an unassuming little space full of big flavour. With only 6 or 8 tables, Jolly's offers a cozy and wam, albeit spartan environment. I brought a date here one night, and what I assumed would be a slow Tuesday night, the place was already packed at 7. The hostess assured us that we'd have a table soon enough, so we waited outside. A few moments later, the hostess brought us two plates of pakoras onto the sidewalk, courtesy of Jolly himself, thanking us for waiting. We were barely two bites into our delicious appetizer when we got our table. The menu is small, but one can easily find themselves idecisive at all the amazing-sounding items. The meals themselves were, just like the appetizers, delicious, with just the perfect amount of spice so as to not sear your palate, but instead tease it into submission. As we were just geting ready to leave, Jolly appeared from his modest kitchen and went around, asking people what they thought of their meals. I thought this was a great touch, and it's where the small boutique aspect to the restaurant really shines. Will definately return to sample more of his menu.

Hooray for jolly!. I love this place for their amazing naan bread, great service, solid wine offerings and cozy atmosphere.<br/>I've eaten their butter chicken every time I've been there and it's always creamy with a little spice and a ton of flavour. Make sure you start with the samosa, served on a bed of chickpeas it's a meal unto itself.<br/>Well priced too, with combos starting at $13 and great wines by the glass.

Worth a second try. I'm a huge fan of Rangoli's but not a fan of the line-ups...so I've been looking for the next best Indian restaurant. Our first experience with Jolly was a bag of mixed emotions. It took the staff about 15 minutes to acknowledge our presence but when they did they were friendly. They took our order quickly but we waited a long time only to find out that they hadn't put our drink orders in. Then about five minutes later, we were told that our dinner order wasn't put into either. So we sat there waiting in total about 40 minutes with only water. Jolly gave us two complimentary appetizers in apologies and the appetizers were very yummy although I wasn't sure what it was as the server never told us. When our dinner arrived, my prawn vindaloo was quite amazing but my boyfriend's butter chicken was really lacking. The sauce was great but the chicken was so dry, it tasted like rubber. Since he didn't want to wait again, he managed to eat his dish. Some of the food was good and so we think we'll give it a second try. Hopefully next time will be a better experience.

... we noticed that there were a lot of people doing take out and could see the kitchen rushing to fill these take out orders. Definitely looked like a popular joint for take out.

When I stepped into the restaurant, I instantly felt the "Indian vibe" from the unique decorations - nice draping clothes used to cover the ceilings and the detailed light. Our entrées came with naan. Oh my goodness, they was AMAZING! I loved it so much that we ordered two additional naans for $2 each. They were topped with sour cream and some spices and were super warm, fluffy, and soft. I ordered the hydrabadi biryani and chose chicken over lamb.

I thought the lamb and malabari chicken sauce was wayyy too salty so I didn’t like it very much. However the butter chicken was really good, next time I think it’s better to just order butter chicken instead.

..I didn’t enjoy the ambiance either. The room is very small and some of the tables look awkward right in the middle of the room. The service was a little slow and could be a little bit more professional. I just didn’t have a good feeling in this restaurant. It lacked refinement. And the food wasn’t up to par.

I haven't had Indian food for a while, so my recent dinner at Jolly's Indian Bistro was quite satisfying. The place was cleverly decorated with fabric to cover up the exposed ceiling. The drapes contributed to a warm and intimate ambiance as if we were dining in an elaborate Indian tent. I really liked the ornate lamp suspended from the ceiling. I started with a mango lassi ($3.50) as usual. It was quite thick, and I appreciated the fact that the glass wasn't completely filled up with ice. The waitress recommended the crispy prawns ($8.95) as a starter, but oddly enough the prawns were not crispy at all. Each mushy prawn was surrounded by a ball of dough with a texture similar to tofu or fish cake. Although I enjoyed the honey mustard sauce and the salad, I wouldn't want to order this dish again. We ordered 2 entrees to share, and each entree came with rice and salad. The goa fish fry ($15.95) was a savoury cod dish cooked in onion sauce. The fish fillet was very soft and I was happy t

If you’re wondering where to eat in Vancouver for good Indian, check out Jolly’s. The curry was rich and creamy rather than oily. The naan and rice were seasoned with fragrant spices. When your child says, “Yum, yum, yum,” as he eats and sticks out his full belly at the end of the meal, you know you’ve found a restaurant favourite.

Jolly’s is a fine little place on West 4th that makes fluffy naan and serves generous pours of wine. When the main reason for going out is a catch-up, those kinds of things are important. Carbs and alcohol are on the menu at any good girls’ night. Baby eggplants in a rich tomato curry to help you work your way through that naan are icing on the cake.

Like many places I seem to be reviewing, the biggest problem was the service. Two very similar looking waitstaff were serving us, without communicating to each other at all. When my friend ordered a vegetarian plate and was delivered 3 meat curries instea
