Review Bao Down - Vancouver

Joanna Dee
Went here for the first time and we ordered the bao flight, everything tasted very good except for one on bottom right (vegan one), it kinda tasted too oily but the rest were fine. The servings were great for sharing for sure. The second photo with poutine-like inspiration, we knew the fries weren’t fresh as we were told by the server that it took long because they ran out of fries. The expectations for the portionss they needed for that night business was underestimated as they ran out of pretty much half of the bao choices to choose from. Plus there was only one server. Very sad, she’s completey overworked. Could’ve been better if they have extra 2 atleast to give her extra hand. She took care the front of the house, server, drinks and cash and cleaning. Poor management, give her a raise!!

Great vibes, fries and bbq. They have alcoholic drinks but they have no problem if you tag along a toddler while dining in. Extraordinary service from that new Irish server in town.

We stopped when we heard the music but stayed for happy hour drinks and food. Friendly and welcoming. Great food. I ordered the Brussels sprouts (really!) and everyone at our table loved them. We ended up ordering more. If that's not a food testimonial, I don't know what is!

Great food, I always enjoy the Bao flight. However, like many small businesses in Vancouver, the management finds it acceptable to UNDERSTAFF so that there was only one person working front of house on a Saturday night. The server was clearly being overworked and resulted in slower service than usual. However, I've been here other times where they seem to have enough people working. If you can't afford to hire enough labor to run your business effectively, you should probably find another business model.

Damn... I used to love this place... Now it's just depressing. I live in the neighbourhood, support local business, and have walked by it reluctantly quite a few times lately, and figured, "why not? I ate there 100 times a couple years back, the foods gotta still be good..? Maybe?" Hell no. The place smelled like a moldy basement, which I only realized after I ordered. No staff, just Ed(the owner), who took my order, accepted cash payment, didn't wash his hands, and proceeded to prepare my meal. - Side note: to my dismay, I ordered a YVR and a side of fries. The YVR; priced accordingly. However, I didn't eat it, so I don't know if it was worth my $8. But... The side of fries; $7.95!! I paid for them truly out of sympathy for the owner. - The inevitable closing of Bao Down is due, and is a now hope for me. Please throw in the towel. Or at least wash it... oh, and PS. who even listens to music that loud while eating? I was there for 3.5 minutes and wanted to shoot myself. And I love reggae music.... You're welcome whoever reads this and avoids the disappointment I just experienced.

Only bad thing was the food took forever and it came out one at a time. Our first food came out 30 mins after we ordered. We had to take the rest to go because we spent way too long waiting for it. Only reason why im giving it a 4 star because the server was amazing! She was solo on the floor and still gave us great service.

Great drink selection, food was delicious. I've been to the other location by Olympic Village. Would recommend the Brussels sprouts (to die for). Went for a birthday and ordered alot of food and drinks, everything was great. Good music to add to the vibe as well (hiphop, rap, rnb). Very lively on Thurs, Fri, Sat, staff are friendly and fun making it an relaxed, yet upbeat experience. Would recommend for parties, happy hour, late night fun.

The first time i went was when they first opened and the food was good . The other day my friend and i went there cz she never tried it, we ordered the japayoki, the food came out so fast and when we tasted it the rice was hard, they cant even cook the rice properly, its uncooked. It so obvious that the food was microwaved and the food its not even hot. My friend says we shoulv'e just went to a fast food and bought burger lol.
