Review Wallflower Modern Diner - Vancouver

I absolutely love supporting small businesses and especially those that are gluten free however this restaurant was fairly average, nothing too special. Had the GF WAFFLES: which were fairly small and seemed like they just took them out of the freezer and let them air thaw - they didn't come plated hot. However appreciated that they served them with the maple syrup and butter on the side. Also had the GRILLED TOMATO & SPINACH BENNY: as with the waffles also came out less then warm (almost room temperature it seemed). Fairly average flavours as well.

Went here for brunch. Was a good vibe inside. Unfortunately our food didn't come out hot, which was disappointing as the flavours were tasty and would have been even better. But a nice spot with lots of tasty menu options.

AMAZING. Love this place, perfect for celiac, vegan and vegetarian. The portions are a bit small but the prices are really cheap! Maximum is probably 20$ for an entree. And happy hour is 3-close every day! Lovely staff :)

A quirky and nicely sized spot for comfort foods and happy hour drinks. Lots of vegan and gluten free options availible. Unfortunately, not as good as it used to be.

I’m surprised to read the view previous to mine had such a bad experience. This was my 3rd time visiting this place and I’ve always had great service! They staff is super friendly! All the GF options are great for all my friends that are celiac. The food here is also great. Good portions! Just look at the chicken club sandwich I had, a thick juicy piece of breast in it!! But on the other hand my fries were soggy. Not a big deal though.

My go to spot for brunch to then go onto happy hour. Vegan friendly and also choices of meats so good for all peoppe! And they've got the best mugs ever. Also nice vibe and nice art on the wall! Definitely reccomend!

#sorrynotsorry … I don’t even have energy to write a 1 star review! Everything was below average… service, food… omg the plates were so unclean! I had the pleasure of eating the worst poutine in my life! And the kale salad… need I continue this tragedy 😭 OK enough said!

Loved the vibe and drinks. The mac and cheese surprised me! Didn't realize it was vegan until I started eating it and definitely didn't taste cheese - I don't know what the alternative was but it was tasty! Will be back during my next trip.

Perfect place for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters. Great place for my family and I to eat so it can cater to everyone. Love this place can't recommend it enough.

Here for the second time today and we fell in love :) great vegan (and omni) poutine, awesome vegan pina colada and now we're just waiting for probably even more awesome burgers and sandwiches. Might come back tomorrow for the vegan Mac n cheese before heading back home totally recommend this place for anyone who wants to go a bit further off the downtown tourist rush into more alternative settings

Family of four enjoyed our meals - meatloaf wellington; bacon cheese burger; mac n cheese (sub-not vegan cheese) with chorizo and the beef stroganoff. Everything was excellent including the service and pretty reasonably priced for what you get. We will return.

One of the very best spots for brunch on the northern end of Main Street, off Broadway. Those bennies!

Great service. friendly staff . Our meal was wonderful. The variety of vegan and non vegan menu items was great and the burgers were perfectly cooked

My very very very favourite eating place in the whole wide world, zero exceptions

Fantastic hole-in-the-wall breakfast. Wish more options on the menu: more fruit dishes, non red-meat dishes and drinks.

Best dinner I've had in years !! Seriously I am always dissspointed with vegan food at restaurant but this was so fantastic that I'm telling everyone and such care taken by staff I've never been asked , do you have any allergies? No I don't but thanks got caring. We will be back

This is a popular diner located on Main Street, right near Broadway. They have a menu, a large portion of which are vegetarian/vegan, although they do also have meat dishes for carnivores like myself. I had their Canuck Burger with Fries. The burger itself was quite good - I quite enjoyed their meat patty - the fries were strangely dry, however. The prices are a little on the higher side. The food took a while to come out, but the server was quite warm and friendly. While the diner didn't blow me away, I think it's worth a visit, especially if you're vegetarian/vegan.

The Canuck Burger and Fries ($16):
3.5/5
This contained bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, and mushrooms, and comes with your choice of pork & beef patty, grilled chicken breast, or beyond burger patty. I, of course, had the pork & beef patty. The burger wasn't particularly large in size, but still pretty satisfying. Although the patty was a little dry and charred on the exterior, it was very tender and juicy on the inside. The bacon provided a great bit of saltiness. The fries were crispy, but strangely dry.

Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 3.5/5
Service: 4/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Burgers

This is a really beautiful restaurant as the interior design is quite unique and definitely adds a lot of character. The service is really polite and friendly and truly cares about your needs (especially since you can get anything turned vegan or vegetarian). I really enjoyed my eggs benedict and tried to not be so critical to other places I had had since I wanted to try the way that they made it. It was truly wonderful and I was full, the prices were very reasonable and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

NEVER GO TO THIS RESTAURANT. We placed an order for pick up (the waiter on the phone was condescending to begin with) and because our order was 'large' we were charged a gratuity fee...like seriously 6-7 dishes is considered large enough for a fee. We went in to pick up the food and asked why we were being charged this amount and the waiter said the tone of the question was "aggressive" and that she felt "insulted". That is pretty pathetic, that she could not even answer a simple question. She pinned me as the one at fault, for just asking for an explanation. We called for the manager, and he too was just as rude as the waiter and did absolutely nothing. He did not care whatsoever. You're in the service business guys, learn what that entails. We have eaten in restaurants in New York, Boston, all over Europe, and never have we been met with such harshness from restaurant staff. They seem to just want to squeeze every penny out of you. The manager and waiter that we dealt with should really take a lesson on proper mannerisms. Please NEVER visit this restaurant, save yourself from dealing with this.

140 characters summary: I can't wait to come back to try the rest of their menu. Must try their peanut butter syrup. . I frequent Main St. quite often and I've never been to The Wallflower. To be honest, the first time I heard about it was fairly recent so when my friend Meredith suggested that we go there, I was down.

Location : 99 B-line bus to Main street (Vancouver)
Ambience: loved d wall paintings (apparently you can buy them if you like them)

Food: Best place for vegetarians/ vegans. The Moroccan wrap with red kidney beans stuffing served with soup of the day( which is amazing) is so good !
The vegan cheesecake has a coconut base which I loved the most being a coconut lover .
The Thai kinda veggie dish served with ur choice of bread is not bad !

May seem a bit pricey but food is worth it !

Mount Pleasant is a super hip and happening area and Wallflower Diner contributes well to the entire scene. Once again, I had heard about them on You Gotta Eat Here! and have been looking forward to trying them out ever since.

We visited early on a Friday evening and the place wasn’t too busy. Their purple neon sign makes them unmistakable to find! The space is simple and cool with a neat black and white floral mural on one side. Our server was friendly and the overall vibe of the restaurant is that it’s a casual spot that is welcoming to everyone. (By “everyone” they mean omnivores, carnivores, vegans, vegetarians, and celiacs - there is delicious, edible food for everyone!) It’s a great place to keep note of if you have friends of varying diets.

We sat near the front in a booth by the window and began to look over the appetizing menu. I noticed right away that the music was really, really good. It was all upbeat and fun stuff from the 80s and 90s. I started with a Caesar (Vodka, clamato, worcestershire and tobasco - $6.00) to drink. This was a really good straight forward caesar. It tasted great and had a nice kick to it. I liked the seasoning on the glass rim and I loved the garnish of two giant olives. They also offer a vegan version made with tomato juice instead of clamato.

On the show I saw them make the Meatloaf Wellington (Meatloaf, bacon, puff pastry, vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy - $16.00) and was instantly sold on trying it. However, there is a bunch of stuff on the menu that I would be very interested in ordering in the future; such as the Beef Stroganoff and Grandma’s Fried Chicken. Plus they serve brunch every day until 4pm and I am totally down for that! Meatloaf wrapped in bacon wrapped in pastry can only be a good thing. They make the meatloaf with ground beef and pork, ketchup, pickles (yes!), hot sauce, coffee, and pickle juice (double yes!), among other things. Then they wrap the loaf in bacon and wrap that in pastry... And I can’t think of much else that sounds more delicious than that. Thankfully, it tasted just as good as TV made it sound. The meatloaf itself was tender and super flavourful. The pickle flavour completely came through in a delightful but not overpowering way (although let’s face it, there would have been no such thing as “too much” for me). It was all balanced so well between the meats, vegetables and sauces involved in this creation. The bacon was crisp and so was the light golden pastry. The textures were so excellent and I would absolutely order this again. Plus the sides that were included were fresh and tasty as well. Loved!

In the mood for dessert, we chose the Waffle Banana Split (Gluten free waffle, fried banana, peanut butter syrup and 2 scoops of Say Hello Sweets coconut ice cream - $10.00). I also really liked the sound of the Ice Cream Sandwich (made with a peanut butter chocolate cookie) and will probably try that next time. All I needed to hear was “fried banana.” And “peanut butter syrup” didn’t hurt either. The best part was the fried banana for sure, all warm and caramelized. The ice cream was very nice and certainly didn’t seem to be missing anything in the dairy department (even though it’s dairy-free). I found the waffle a little dry and lackluster, but the sauce punched things up a lot. A good dessert to share.

I really liked this place. It’s a cool and cozy neighbourhood joint. The use of pickles in this place is A+. I like their interesting food ideas and the prices are reasonable as well. It’ll certainly be at the top of my list when I need a place that is accommodating to various types of diets. No bland food in sight here!

Only vegan restaurant I would eat at. I must say, the food and service here was great, by far the best vegan food I have ever tried. I found the burger and vegan chili fries to taste perfect! Like a little broccoli man dancing about in your man. If vegan food isn't your thing, they do offer non vegan food and those were quite good as well. Cheers!

The car-free day on Main Street drove us further from our intended vegan destination. I truly believe that such days actually increase oil consumption and gas emission, instead of its intent to decrease it. Especially by those who know not of it, circulating the neighbourhood trying to find parking and getting caught up in additional traffic congestion. This was my case. And being stalled in two pile ups had us travelling further down Main Street destination, towards downtown. (Majority of the vegan friendly restaurants seem to be located on Main.)

I actually wandered in here once before, months ago, just for a drink while waiting for a ride. I had no idea I stumbled upon a GF gem until yesterday! I googled the place and not realised it was the same one until I walked in. The atmosphere was fantastic and so inviting, even despite my being by myself and certainly one to not enjoy solo outings. I had the salmon benny and a side of poutine. For one, all salmon bennies should have capers, and the Wallflower got this right. But more importantly, GF poutine!! Having a frier for just fries, and using cornstarch rather than wheat flour should be commonplace everywhere because it yields better results - GF or not - so thank you Wallflower, you have seen the light. I'm going back, hopefully soon, and definitely with friends next time!

Here's the thing, the food was good, it was satisfying, tasty, filling, good vegan comfort food. That was great, what wasn't great is that when we got to the restaurant we stood inside for 5 minutes before a server even acknowledged our existence, then they took 15 minutes to take out order, and it was another 45 minutes before we got our food, which is rather unacceptable
Bhav
This place used to have amazing food, I have lovely memories attached to it. However, it is not worth the wait anymore, 20 minutes to get a table, 35 to get food and 20 minutes to get the bill. If you are hungry and expect to eat within an hour, this isn't the place.
Jelizatin Eats
We came here for brunch with a group of friends. If you're a fan of, caesars, make sure to order one because they are spicy and delicious! However, we felt the food was very average. The waffle was very stale tasting and the caramel sauce that came with it was way too sweet. The eggs that came with the benedicts were hard and didn't have the soft, mushy texture that we're used to. And the poutine was really hard to eat, we definitely do not recommend it.

Prices are very reasonable here, and service was great considering how busy it was. We feel there are better brunch spots around town; we wouldn't recommend.
Hungry Hungry Homer
We've been here a few times, the food was pretty good, but breakfast is hard to screw up.. be sure avoid the pretentious bearded Main Street hipster doofus that works there. He is rude, and clueless when it comes to customer service, he spent more time socializing than doing his job. We couldn't even get coffee refills until we asked for our bill! Probably won't be back.
Jason Lu
went here one time with my cousin who recommended this restaurant (she said this is a restaurant for vegans and those who eats all gluten free) the description she gave me was so good that i got interested in going and try it. oh boy, i was frustrated. the place was so small and we have to line up and wait outside, not clean but not dirty not impressive and finally after a long wait we were able to eat food not impressive, i didn't like anything that i ordered, have tried vegan food somewhere else and it tasted good but NOT in this place. wont be going back here.
NeverSayWhen
A cute little place that is consistently busy. Service is friendly and quick. The breakfast poutine was delicious and quite a large portion. We tried the raspberry pie (all their desserts come from the Sunflower Gluten Free Bakery) and were not fans. Our server asked for our feedback and did not charge us for the pie which was very professional and kind. Overall, it was a great experience, and I'd highly recommend checking it out!
SoulFood
Great brunch bennies, and super hospitable staff. I feel this place is known for its vegetarian/vegan options (which I don't doubt are great), but there were also a lot of dishes with meat so don't hesitate if you want to try this place as all are welcome here.
Naiomi
Brunch until 4pm is great. Had the crab cake eggs benny and it was delicious. I liked that the crab cakes weren't heavy and made with quinoa- what a nice twist to my favourite breakfast.
James
I came here with a vegan friend. He ordered some food, but I decided to pass on it and just drink as many $5 Caesars as I could until he finished. They make an OK Caesar. I was sort of eyeing my friends vegan chili fries though to be honest. It looked pretty good for something with a bunch of fake meat and cheese sauce on it. Maybe I will come back and try it some time.

*update*

I came back here again and tried those fries... they were really good. Caesars were still meh though. Changing my rating from 2.5 to 4.0 because the food is good and they have etch-a-sketch. Also the service is friendly.

Vegetarians aren't wallflowers at this hip joint. The menu has as many vegetarian and vegan options, while still offering plenty for non-vegetarians. Pop in for a hearty breakfast or sample a vegan version of Canadian classic, poutine. The atmosphere is great, the music eclectic and interesting, the wait staff attentive and friendly.
Jian Reis
Fantastic poutine, great beers, awesome service and some great, eclectic, game-themed decor. The menu is particularly vegetarian friendly, and the vibe is lively and friendly. Great spot for brunch.

Beermosas and tofu thai wrap for days. Easily my favourite Mount Pleasant restaurant and I go out to eat very often!

Plus the staff is amazing!
Marcie Dheilly-Sturrock
Absolutely the best restaurant I have ever been to.. I go there expecting to have one main course and always end up ordering another because I just cant help myself. I am a vegan and the vegan options are amazing !! I have almost tried everything vegan on the menu... delicious.
Amanda Pang
The prices were a bit on the high side, but the food was pretty good. I got the vegan hummus melt with soup. They were both quite flavorful, but they were really strong. The sandwich had a strong garlic taste, and the tomato soup had a strong pepper. It was a bit too much for me, so I wish I could've gotten a different side. I'm curious to try out other items (can't base everything on just one meal).
Brewji
Woo, got the 100th review! This place sucked balls.

I got their breakfast poutine. Let me tell you, I'm a biiig fan of poutine. This had awful written all over it.

I've never had a poached egg before coming here, but I have enjoyed my share of fried eggs with runny yolks most of my life. This egg tasted like iron mixed with blood. God awful. The Fries were soggy before the egg hit them, and the quality of the gravy was worse than those chicken gravy packets you get at the dollar store.

Needless to say, awful poutine for a worse price...and i couldn't finish it because the damn poached egg (who orders a poached egg? Seriously!!) Was all over the place, and ruined it.

My girlfriend had a chicken wrap, but it was nothing special. She says McDonald's or Tim's would have been better.

Don't believe what you see on TV, kids. The wallflower was packed with indie hipsters, but they got it wrong this time.

The only thing I'd want to go back for (everyone deserves a second chance, except Belgian Fries, they can rot in a pit), is their buttermilk fried chicken. You can't possibly mess up fried chicken. Right?
BW
Went for brunch on a Friday, the place was pretty packed & it wasn't long before people came & went. Ordered a chicken wrap and the order was huge !! Worth $11, included soup as well. The place is kinda grungy but also sweet:) loved the menu design & layout, seemed like they had a ton of options! Brunch is also everyday until 4pm!!
Joanna Butler
No words. Such yummy food. I know they have healthier options, but hubby loves the amazing perogies, I mean really, they come with bacon. And the Caesar salad is, well, as awesome as their normal salad! I love their Canuck burger, soo yummy--they make me accept the mushrooms as essential to the burger... I've had their daily specials, they're always top notch; their beef Wellington was so rich and flavourful!! And we LOVE their Apple Pie dessert thing as well as their incredible creme brûlée -- none have ever come close. Besides all this, the staff are quirky and awesome
Michael
Good food and friendly service. Had a really good veggie burger here, served on a soft herbed bun. There are a lot of veggie and vegan options, but they definitely don't skimp on the meat options. Good place for a quick bite before heading to the breweries and other fun activities in the area.
Vik
Not a bad restaurant at all. Service is quick and kind, but you hardly see the server much. Left right after the machine was put in our hands and had someone else thank us for payment. Food was good, portions were large, atmosphere was solid and the company was well rounded. I'd come back again to try their brunch.
Nosh And Nibble
Hey guys! Today we have a review of some comfort food from The Wallflower Modern Diner over in Mount Pleasant. With long brunch hours and a hearty all-day menu, do the flavours here inspire comfort or are the interior wall lights as bright as it gets? Read on to find out. Food:Team Tastic came here for a post-coffee dinner and we ordered the following:

Another casual brunch place. Seems like this area has a ton of them but this one is worth the wait. Attentive service, good prices and amazing food. They use good quality ingredients and keep things simple. I have never had a bad meal here, and everything is cooked perfectly. I love the selection of vegetarian and vegan options even though I am primarily a meat eater. Whenever I am craving eggs benny (which is often) this is my first choice.

Never a great food experience. The meatloaf was the saltiest thing I've ever had, the beef dip was dry & extremely tough, and the poutine gravy was cold and lumpy. These experiences are from 3 separate visits. Maybe we haven't experienced the full potential, as we haven't had straight vegetarian meals here, but I think an establishment that puts all types of food on the menu should be able to make those meals well. Maybe the chefs don't taste the meat dishes because they are all vegetarian... who knows. The service and drinks have always been fine, but the food has been terrible.

I wish the food was as good as the atmosphere, location and friendly staff... too bad.

The Wallflower is no wallflower. The wallflower seems like an ironic title for this outspoken environment. The food was a little surprising. It was different. The decor was basically pop art repeating its self all over the place. The server was intimidating with her tattoos but she provided typical service that you might expect. The layout inside was sort of interesting. Creative and casual. The bathroom wasn't very good. The prices were okay. There was definitely a tattoo theme among those hired to work there.
Sophie
Vegan magic. How do you make french toast vegan? Clearly with magic. It's hard to find good brunch places that have vegan options that consist of more than just a salad/ fruit. They did a great job creating dishes that don't feel like you're missing out on anything. Great service, but go early for brunch on weekends, as they get quite busy!
Syd
The best casual vegetarian/vegan joint. I’ve been a bunch of times now: had the veggie poutine (and breakfast poutine!) and lightening fries. All times I’ve been with meat eaters, and they've loved it too. Great comfort food.

Went there for brunch on a Saturday.
The staff had a bad attitude. They only serve drip coffee, I ordered the poutine Benny, it was horrible.. Undercooked potato wedges with gravy cheese curds and 2 poached eggs...$12... Holy... My Friend ordered the veggie burger.. She took one bite and that was it... She said it's awful. Never going back!

I met up with my friend for brunch. My friend had arrived earlier than our arranged time and had lined up to get a table for us. When I got there 10 minutes past 11am on a Saturday, there were still people lined up and my friend had just been seated at a table. The place was jammed packed. Like the Farmer’s Apprentice, every inch of the restaurant was utilized for maximum seating. I had the seat where people would walk by and they kept bumping into the bag or coat hanging behind my chair – a bit annoying. The interior was artsy with hand painted intricate designs on the walls. There were portrait paintings that hung close to the ceiling. Customers were hipster-ish and hippie like with tattoos, dyed hair and the guy sitting next to our table had his feet up on the booth’s seat. My friend had Earl Grey $3.50 (comes in individual pot), and I had the Chamomile $3.50 since disappointingly, they didn’t have Rooibos. A bit pricey for just a bag of Mighty Leaf tea bag. Our tea pots were full with hot water, and with how the pots were designed, hot water spilled onto the table as our server brought the pots. Pouring into our own cups, it kept spilling from the mouth, leaving a big puddle on the table – at least on my side anyways. Although both of our pots were the exact same type, her handle on the pot was so hot that it was impossible to touch it. Sorry, my pet peeve these days – tea pots that are dysfunctional no matter how pretty they look… It took about 35 minutes for our food to arrive. My friend ordered the Salmon Benny $13 with smoked salmon, capers, red onion and cream cheese, while I had the Classic Benny $10 with poached eggs, grilled ham, salad, English muffin, house made hollandaise sauce and diced potatoes. I just looooooove Bennys!! This one was very good. The eggs done the way I like it. Delicious sauce, and a nice touch of greens on the side. The potatoes were nicely seasoned. It was good portion and reasonably priced. Presentation could have u

Good. But slow. Had crispy chicken wrap and a poutine. Both were excellent. Good thing because it was a long wait.

Good food with bad service. My sister recently came home telling me about a server who confronted her for giving her a 15% tip instead of a 20% tip and told her and her friends not to eat there if they couldn't afford to give the gratuity.

Personally, I've eaten multiple times there and the food is nothing but awesome. The service is really slow and it took half an hour for our food to come out and our water was not refilled until after we asked for our bill which took another 5-6 mins to get.

Overall, I'd come come back but the service needs to amount to what the food is because they're driving customers away. My sister on the the other hand is probably too embarrassed to come back along with the five friends she brought with her. Her and her friends now avoid it and tell their friends not to go because of they way they were treated.
Klara Lee
Food is great here but service is a bit slow for a not very busy weekday.
SMG
Nice Place. Cool vibe, great food, friendly staff. Zero complaints and will definitely go back!
Veghead
One of the best vegan friendly spots. Such a cute atmosphere, alwways really busy so hard to get a good table, service is average.. but the menu is great.. i love that they have half the menu totally vegan!! and its all really delicious.
Jay
Awesome place but the coffee is the worst on the planet
Cheeseburger
Interesting place. Came here last night with my girlfriends as it has a decent sized vegan menu for one of my vegetarian friends. I was surprised by how tasty-sounding the vegan dishes were, being an omnivore and totally unknowledgeable about vegan/vegetarian foods. Ordered the beef stroganoff and it was quite tasty, although I forgot to ask for no pickles :(.

The decor is very hipster and laid back, and their brunch menu looks AWESOME. I will definitely need to return for that!! The only complaint/bone to pick would be the long wait for our food. That might have been because we had six people and they waited for everyone's dishes to be made before bringing it all out. Next time, I'm returning with less people!
Andrew R.
Not bad. Really enjoy that I can come with my GF allergy friends and vegan friends and all enjoy some comfort food. Sure the food doesn't knock it out of the park but considering the prices (not exactly organic gourmet food), it seems fair. I would come back again for a casual meal that is close to home with friends that can't eat as easily in any restaurant.
Bonnie Leverette
Meh. Went in today for a snack and ordered nachos with guacamole and salsa as well as GF mac and cheese.
The salsa was actually bruchetta I think, it was fresh, but it was not salsa. And the guacamole tasted strange, and I realized it had no cilantro/lime, but was actually avocado flavored with cumin. so it kind of reminded me of chili. But I couldn't eat it, it tasted bizarre.
The GF mac and cheese was appalling. It was actually penne floating in processed cheese sauce, they actually served the dish with a spoon, not a fork. I do love cheese enough for this insane cheese to pasta ratio, but not fake cheese.
I had a wonderful server, the atmosphere was great, the prices/options were even reasonable.
But the food was awful. I won't be back.
Gord
The Meatloaf Wellington is to die for. I saw it featured on TV on you Gotta Eat Here and thought it looked outstanding. It was better than outstanding.
Shelby
Not Great At All. I wanted to like eating here, as it was my first trip to Vancouver as a vegan. I didn't care for their 'vegan benny'... I can personally whip up something a lot better at home. I was really disappointed.
Eat
Not Mad About Bag of Greens. I think places like Wallflower need to improve the way they make and serve salad. Why am I paying for bag-o-greens on the side? I could do that myself at home. I like the food here once in a while, but I want a salad that was made with some love and dumped on the plate from a bag.
Ezra
Great options, great food. Fantastic food -- maybe the best I've had during my short stay in Vancouver!

For starters, since I was in Canada, I HAD to try poutin. I split the vegan poutin, and liked it. It was interesting (different than the chili cheese fries of the U.S.) but tasty nonetheless. Really, the main course was the tastiest part though. The Vegan Wallflower Burger (with a side salad) was delicious and exceeded expectations. The portion sizes are more than generous, and I was stuffed after eating there. $11 for the burger, $9 for the poutin ($4.50 since I split it with someone) -- more than reasonable for a huge lunch. On top of that, the waitress we had was outstanding in terms of service (as well as her t-shirt, pictured in this review).

I highly recommend this place, especially for those with some dietary restrictions!
Food Fiending
This place is usually a miss rather than a hit - it is often understaffed. The food is poor, bland, uses cheap ingredients and is overpriced for what it is. Many of the servers are standoffish and abrupt. The floors, bar, booths are often stained, sticky, and dirty. The only thing going for it are cheap drinks. Come here for a cheap can but don't expect anything more.
Karin Weekley
The thing that caught my attention first, was how dirty it is. The fabric on covering the booths is very stained. The food was mediocre both times I went. I won't go back.
Tracy Rowand
Add some colour!!!!. The food is good but wow its not appealing on the eyes... had the duo of dips....beige, mushroom brushetta.... beige and brown..... A bit of attention to detail to what the plate looks like would be great as we do eat with our mouths and eyes!

Good options for vegans and gluten frees which was appreciated!
Ann
Absolutely TERRIBLE service! We sat ourselves after waiting for 10 minutes and noone had even acknowledged us standing there. The server then got angry with us for seating ourselves and told us we had to leave our seats. We should've left once noone even came to say "I'll be with you shortly" instead we were going to give it chance and just got a mouthful from the server.
Darin
Great place. I come here often. The food is so good and the staff are really nice - every time. A few more beer choices would be nice, but it's not important in there. I go for the food and atmosphere. Oh, and they don't take debit for payment, but they take credit. A little odd but whatever, I'll keep going!
Tamara
Great Options. Nice to see a menu with tons of options for vegans and Celiacs while still catering to us wheat-eating omnivores. Service is the Main Street standard of indifference, but they pay enough attention that I don't feel completely abandoned. Always enjoy my food there and prices are decent so it's a regular stop for me and friends.
The Transformer
Hothead vegan burger was great! Soup was truly terrible but there was no apology and it still appeared on everyone's bills. Service needs a polish, but overall it's great to finds a place with gluten-free, animal-free options.

Probably the worst service I've ever received. Only two servers (who were also playing bartender), with almost no personality.
The poutine was delicious, but tiny, and unfortunately terribly overpriced ($9).
The vegan shepherds pie was a letdown, had to smother it in hot sauce to give it even a hint of flavor. It came with a green salad that tasted good but was nothing but mixed greens and dressing. ($12).

Needless to say, this was not the best stop for food we've made in Vancouver. Won't be visited again by us!!

Awesome gluten free food. Bread is so soft and fresh. Gluten free icecream sandwich amazing
Jalil
Server was hungover so service wasnt exactly on point. Eggs Benny while overall 7/10 had to be sent back as it was over cooked.

Free corkage on the Tuesday was probably the most redeeming quality

Underwhelming breakfast plate. Came in here a couple of times for breakfast, not impressed and doubtful we will return. The omelette was a bit greasy for me, rubbery textured and sparse on filling, plus the potatoes were not evenly cooked and also far too sparse. They could have been great cause the seasoning seemed tasty. The vegan options are made with very, very low quality ingredients despite the price tag and something that can be thrown together in less than 4 mins in a pan. If you are gonna offer vegan options, make it worthwhile. I have had way better vegan breakie in Van. The coffee is very nice but we did not get a refill. Despite this, we were satisfied with the pleasant service although they could have used an extra set of hands. I also liked how the place is decorated. Now, can you tell me what is Modern about Kraft jams in packets? Or how is not accepting a debit card Modern? And why aren't the servers content with a 17.5% tip?

Celiac Friendly!. Very impressed with their gluten-free options. Most restaurants have a couple gluten free items, while this menu consisted of such a vast variety of celiac-friendly options (almost everything on the menu was gluten-free).

They seem very accommodating for a other food restrictions and eating choices (ie. vegan, etc). Definitely our favorite restaurant in the entire GVA.

Yummm. The wallflower is a cute restaurant with a huge menu that will suite anyone's diet; meat, seafood, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free. the price is decent and the portions are well sized and yummy. they have brunch until 4pm and my favourite is the salmon benny. their coffee is organic (from jj bean) and as you look around, you'll see that everyone has a different, unique cup. it's a nice touch. they're busy on weekend mornings/afternoons so get there early!

i'd recommend the wallflower for brunch or a dinner date (they have little candles on all the tables at night and nice music)

Good vegan breakfast. My husband and I stopped by on a trip to Vancouver. He had the BBQ veggie scramble, I had the vegan benny. Both were good - not amazing, but good for vegan food at a non-vegan restaurant.
Miche
Great brunch!. The vegan 'eggs' bennie is sooo good!
Tastebuds
A fabulous place for a butcher and a vegetarian to come together and dine. Yes, this is the situation I am in! I could tell you the ways in which this causes my spouse and I some issues, but after eating here- I was able to forget for a little while. The Cajun tofu appy was the BEST take on tofu I've ever had. Even so that the butcher at the table voluntarily chowed down. Vegan sheppards pie was reminiscent of childhood winter nights. The grandmas fried chicken, I am told, 'must have actually been made by someone's grandma' though I didn't check the kitchen. I'll be back very soon!

Good for dining out with vegan friends. Wallflower offers a good-sized menu with lots of vegan and non-vegan options. Our table had a vegan mac n' cheese, a peanut tofu wrap (which they'll make with chicken if you ask), and the hummus foccacia melt which had spinach, red onions and havarti. All the dishes were fairly tasty (but unless you're used to vegan cheese, the mac n' cheese does not taste at all like a real mac 'n' cheese dish). The fries were pretty bad, so have the salad or soup as a side for the sandwiches. Everything was fairly affordable, with dishes mostly in the $9-15 range. The service was friendly but a bit slow, so if you're in a hurry, you might want to go elsewhere.

Horrible Service. Perhaps the look and feel of the restaurant calls for a casual and laid back attitude. But that is definitely compromised in service as well. I have made an order and been totally forgotten for close to 45 minutes while customers around me were getting their meals before me, even though I had arrived and ordered much sooner than they had. When I approached the server about this issue he got back to me and said the cook dropped my meal and had to recook. That doesn't explain why the cook would continue to cook other people's orders and skip mine altogheter. I let it go and eventually the food came after a tremendously long wait.

I wrote an email to the manager so they were aware of this instance and the manager assured me no cook dropped any food that day in the kitchen as her own husband was the chef. Which only meant that the server blatantly lied to me in order to cover up his own forgetfullness. If you need to use a pen and paper to remember orders, then use it.

Will never go again. Wish that wasn't the case.

Three for Saturday morning brunch at 10, the wallflower was crowded. We were left standing long after a table became available and waited 25 minutes after ordering for our meals to be served. The staff were rushed, for sure, but didn't act like experienced wait staff. Lots of confusion, wasted time and abrupt handling of customers. I don't think they are bad people or lazy, but inexperienced and not well trained. On top of this, the food was mediocre, the ambiance crowded and noisy, and the prices were no less than many better restaurants. Sorry, Milestones next time.

Best veggie Shepards pie I ever had. Kudos to you guys. They carry New Grist gluten free beer as well, the best!!!

I took guests from Portland Oregon for an after midnight dinner(they'd just arrived in Van. after a long slow drive thru snow) and it was excellent. 2 of us had the Scrumptious Beef Stroganoff and the 3rd in our party was very impressed by the Canuck Burger. Truly Wonderful late night comfort food!

Loved it!. I'm vegan, my girlfriend is not. This is one of the few places that satisfies us both. The food is great and the staff friendly. As always, specify that you're vegan or gluten-free and the staff will take care of you with excellent suggestions.

I had the Hummus Melt - mmm! We pigged out on Thunder Fries - pretty decadent. My gf loves the Caesar Salad and speaking of salad, I love the dressing that comes with my side salads.

Had the new Meatless Loaf - very nice (I like more of a ketchup-y sauce, can always add some!) The vegan Nachos were great and my gf assures me the Poutine is delicious.

We'll make our way through the menu and see how everything else stacks up - cause we love this place!

Also, we went gluten-free for a week and they have some nice buns! Wish they would make enough to sell to the public.

I wanted to like Wallflower I really did. I wanted to like Wallflower because its in my neighbourhood and my girlfriend is vegan and they are one of the few restaurants in Vancouver that offer vegan options. The times I have been there the food has been alright, not worth what they charge but alright, and the staff are not very friendly. What has turned me off this place for good is the lecture my girlfriend and I received from the waitress on how we needed to specify that our order is vegan when we order because she didnt specify to the kitchen that it was and we received non-vegan food. Ok I can understand that BUT when we sat down my girlfriend asked for a vegan menu and pointed to the vegan side of the menu when she ordered. And on top of the rude lecture the food was kind of disappointing.

Beautiful place but it's not good!. I took one look at the menu and couldn't decide... not because they're were so many great options, because nothing screamed out to me as sounding good actually quite the opposite... they sound disgusting. all my friends had already ordered so i ordered a caesar salad and a poutine. it was the first poutine i ever had... i didn't like it. the caesar salad tasted like barf. the location of the wallflower is terrible, it's literally in the middle of the street.
Bagel Boy
Cool place, nice service, but not sure about the food. I love the room and the service is very nice, but not too impressed with the food. Had a burger which looked really good, but on tasting (ah yes, the all important taste!) it seemed the meat was actually some kind of concoction involving meat, but not pure meat itself. I don't know what was in it, probably bread crumbs and such, but it had a kind of pasty colour and texture. Just not a pure hamburger. Toppings were good, but couldn't get away from that strange meat.

Bun is whole wheat, which I don't prefer for a burger, but that's personal. Probably some people like it, but I don't.

The fries were a bit strange. Not home made and not deep fried. Not as awful as that might sound, but not great, just the same.

Another in our party had meat loaf. It also was rather pasty tasting and lacking a nice meaty quality. They just seem to mix a lot of other stuff into it. The mixed veg, which came with, seemed like it was from a frozen bag of veg. If it wasn't, sure seemed like it.

The place has a really cool vibe and nice service, so I really wanted the food to be better.
No Dessert Im Full
Avoid the cookie cutter beef dip, awesome hipster ambiance lol and drink specials too!
TLF
Great for vegetarians & vegans. Nice appetizers, and vegan(izable) mains. The mac and cheese was a bit scary though: a bit bland and gooey with so much vegan cheese. Still, the salads and starters were great -- maybe the most garlicky homous in the city. Did I mention cheap drinks?
Archaeologist
Decent food, and the service is almost there but needs some work occassionally.

A great place for Brunch. This is a wonderful place to go for brunch - GREAT food, paired with a cool atmosphere with wonderful service. I have eaten here over 10 times and every time have left with a smile on my face. The food is always fresh and the daily specials are always a treat. My favorite part is the selection of coffee mugs, I won't say more and ruin the fun :)

Left Wanting at the Wallflower. After reading some good reviews, we've been meaning to eat here for awhile, but had been put off by a perceived lack of tempting vegetarian options. This afternoon, with appetites and expectations high, we left our doubts at the door and walked into this little restaurant.
In the mood for a late lunch, we perused the menus. For a place that brags about their homemade burger, it's a shame they don't make one that's vegetarian. Nothing too enticing, so we settled on the tomato spinach eggs benny ($10), and the tofu veggie wrap ($10).
Settling in to wait on the comfortable bench, I looked around the half-empty restaurant. Cozy, nice- but kinda dark, the large front window the main light source. Hope I can see my food.
Our server slid a couple plates onto the table, and we got our first look at the food. Oh- I guess he forgot to put my hollandaise sauce on the side like I asked- no big deal, I'll try it anyway. Uhm, hmm. Shouldn't these hash browns be re-heated before they're taken out of the warming tray and served? Ugh, too much of this hollandaise, gotta scrape it off. To add further insult, the pasty little english muffin under it all wasn't even toasted. That really put me off; if I'm ordering an english muffin, it better be toasted. The salad was nice, and it was the only thing I enjoyed. In disgust, I pushed my plate away, only half finished.
How's your tofu wrap, I ask, and may I have a french fry? Weird, the fries are lukewarm and dry- maybe we should have gone to the Budget foods up the street, bought a bag, and cooked them ourselves. You're right, that wrap does seem kinda lame- boring 'ol pasty white tortilla. Try drowning it in hot sauce for some flavour. Isn't there a burrito place around the corner that does a much better job? Oh, I see you're not going to finish your meal either.
Our server went on break, I think, so we got up, paid the bill, and left our uneaten food on the table as a tip.
Next time we'll go to one of the vegetarian restaurants close by where prices are cheaper and the food is better.
Linnea
Gluten free menu!. Awesome gluten free menu, unlike any i've seen so far. Usually restaurants just advise you to order your meat plain, avoid buns, no fries.... BORING! Wallflower has buns, hollandaise sauce, poutine, crabcakes!! Awesome and great service. Happy Celiac
Agnes
Thank goddess. Someone finally produced a gluten free menu that is actually edible... The meal was delicious, the fried chicken with gravy and fries far surpassed what any celiac or wheat sensitive person could dream of getting in a restaurant. The ice cream sandwich - nirvana. Gluten free beer, such a lovely surprise. Now.... If my dinner partner and I had only been able to hear a word either of us was saying over the extremely loud crashing obnoxious music... Forget this place for romantic dinners, business discussions, or really anything conversational. Next time I will take ear plugs, go alone, and enjoy the food & staff in blissful ear-plugged silence.

Average to Good. Went here for br/lunch with friends from out-of-town today. I ordered the vegan mac & cheese (best part of the meal was the side salad), my husband ordered the spinach and tomato eggs benny and loved it (the egg was poached medium instead of soft - i.e. runny...nice!). Friends ordered the crab benny (ok) and the chef salad (pretty good). Three out of four of us ordered coffee which was just ok (even meh). We followed up with excellent cappucinos from Gene instead.

My husband and I will definitely be back (esp. for the benny).

Gluten-Free Pizzas on Tuesday. My girlfriend has a wheat-sensitivity so we were excited to see that Wallflower was offering gluten-free pizzas on Tuesday nights. From what I understand, they scrub down the kitchen the night before to ensure that on Tuesday there is no gluten contamination.

The pizza was excellent, and the gluten-free crust was tasty with a good consistency.

We also ordered the thunder fries - big mistake. It was huge, and fries don't make for great leftovers. If you're craving fries, stick with the half-order lightning fries.

Gluten-free friendly awesomeness. The breakfasts are delicious. they'll do an egg white poached egg for your benny if you have cholesterol issues (just ignore the butter in the sauce :P), switch out toast for glutenfree bread from kinnickinick, happily give you a pot of soymilk for your coffee, and not give you flack for asking about substitutions.

I can honestly say that this is the first place this allergy-prone person can head to and eat without feeling like a restaurant pariah. There were SO. MANY. CHOICES Haven't felt welcomed like this in a very long while.

There's a vegan and gluten free menu if you're so inclined. Just ask when you sit down. They've switched up their entire kitchen so that flour products don't contaminate gluten-free areas. WOOO!

I tried their omelette. For $7 you get 3 fillings (not countingcheddar, which is included), salad, toast (a tasty baby mesclun salad - not bitter and with a light and delicious dressing), and baked hashbrowns. I had shrimp, feta, and spinach in my omelette. NOM.
There's also fillings like cheese, olives, tomatoes, bacon, and numerous others.

My mum tried the crab benny. We were both surprised by the curryish cumin-ness, but it was delicious. It also came with salad and potatoes.

I highly recommend this place for breakfast in general, the quality of the ingredients, the service, and the attention to substitution requirements can't be beat. If you or your loved ones have allergy issues, it's even better.

(and the rotating art exhibitions on the wall are also quite wonderful)
Diner
This place is a ripoff. Agree with the previous posts how ridiculous portion you get for the 'high' price they charge. regardless of the small portion (I'm not kidding, SMALL), the quality/taste was crappy too. I would recommand foundation that's around the corner which is cheaper, and the quality is wayyyy wayyyy better. The taste is wayyyy better than wallflower too. The halibut burger I got tasted like plastic, and for a 12 bucks burger, I got extremely small two pieces (which adds up to a size of one chicken nugget) of fried halibut, a slice of tomoto and a piece of lettuce, and that's it, nothing else! Not to mention the bun was cold and dry. There were no sauce in my burger too. I've tried out many restaurants in vancouver, and wallflower, regardless of price, is one of the crappiest restaurant I've ever visited. Can't even compete with $5 foodcourt burger. The service so so, ambiance was so so too. overall, two big thumbs down.

Wallflower So-So. We recently joined Groupon (it's an online mass-coupon thing), and had purchased some tickets for The Wallflower so we decided to go (the three of us). The establishment is quite pleasant. Well laid out, nice nice photogrpahy on the walls (we were told that the art changes monthly, I think), and the waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and capable enough.

There are seemingly many dishes on the menu that look yummy, and I really had a hard time deciding what to order. While we were trying to decide, we ordered a couple of appy's. We ordered some poutine, and some crabcakes. I don't eat fish, so I cannot comment on the crabcakes. The poutine, however, was ok. Not great, not horrible. Just ok. They make it with a chicken based gravy, so it might be a tad different than other places.

On to the main courses. My friend ordered the clubhouse that, when it arrived, looked quite good. Apparantly it was. Big chunks of turkey that they, apparantly, cook in house. He rather enjoyed it, and for the $12 it was priced at, the value was reasonable. My friend's wife had some kind of burger, and she didn't complain about paying $13 for that.

There were a lot of menu items I saw that I had an interest in trying. A pulled beef sandwich, a burger, a turkey dinner, the clubhouse, a fried chicken dinner....quite a few different things. After humming and hawing for a bit, I finally decided on Grandma's pan fried chicken dinner. This came with a salad and fries (I substituted mashed potatos). What a mistake!

The chicken dinner consisted of two batter coated, tiny chicken thighs. Before ordering it I had asked the waitress to tell me about it. I asked how many pieces?? 2?? 3?? Breast? wing?? She gave me one of those ambiguous responses that I really should have clarified, but I didn't. I think what she said was "there are no drumsticks". And also told me it was quite good.

The chicken flavour itself was mediocre. Again, it wasn't horrible, but I have had better fried chicken at convenience stores. What is really disappointing about this particular dish is the portion size. For the $14 it cost, it was a COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE RIP-OFF!!!!! I mean c'mon??? $14 for a scoop of paotatos, a small portion of salad, and two lame chicken thighs? For what you were paying, you should have received, AT THE VERY LEAST, half a breast, a wing or two...SOMETHING substantial. This was a joke.

For dessert we ordered the apple pie (enjoyable), and a strawberry waffle that we were told came with strawberries and ice cream. It was actually broght to the table with whip cream, and no ice cream. We had to ask for ice cream.

I may or may not go back. It's certainly not someplace that I would go to every day, and if I did go back, I would probably stick to a sandwich, or maybe a burger. But never again the chicken. That was, in all honesty, one of the most ridiculous portion sizes I have ever been given at a restaurant (for that kind of money).

YMMV....... (your mileage may vary)

This place is great. The special of the day Portobello mush and havarti spinach quessadilla suprised me with it's greatness:) nice large bathrooms and pretty waitress made it great!!

Vegan & Gluten free evironment. Well, maybe not all the affordable beer/drinks that the Wallflower serves is gluten free but there surely there are many alternatives - You'll just have to ask the server of the day.

The space is endearing and comfortable very much like their menu. What defines them most is their unique dedication to all types of artists in the Main Street Corridor. A great place to hang out away from your cozy apartment nearby, inviting your friends to your second home.

This place is great. Hone style cooking, friendly staff. The customer are the typical mainstreet hipster crowd, but otherwise, all around great eats

Good food and pleasant service. We enjoyed our omelettes. Food tasted fresh and bread used for toast was eceptional on the day we went. Our 7 year old approves too.

A friend & I checked this place out for the first time for lunch the other day, and I was reasonably impressed. Good atmosphere & good service + it is liscenced! The food was kind of average, but had a home-cooked feel to it. Will definately go back.
Loxy
I want to like it, but I don't.. I've given the Wallflower a few chances so far.. but keep coming to the same conclusion.. something that sounds like - "Meh". Meals have been below average (bland, generally) but not terrible. The price point is fine but not great. The service has been good, but not enough to make up for the other shortcomings. I will probably go back again, but I won't be surprised if it keeps coming in at a 4/10.
Chris James
I like the price and service. One of my favourite places on main st.
The Tongue
Great service. Random food. Had the feeling my mother was working in the back with her trusty bag of McCain French fries.
David Decolongon
...chicken was stupendously good. All fried chicken is tasty, but when you bite into these succulent thighs, your devotions to other purveyors of fried birds wanes. No bit of this chicken was dry, the skin was crispy, the gravy complemented it, it was not excessively oily, and each serving came with two pieces!

First off, the reason I "Like" The Wallflower on Urbanspoon is because I'm absolutely in love with the Hummus Melt. If they didn't have that, I would definitely "Dislike" it. Everyone ended up finishing their food and enjoying it. But I've heard there are plenty more other vegetarian restaurants in the city now. Surprisingly enough, the Foundation, which we were originally planning to go but decided not to because they didn't take reservations, was empty.

I fell victim to another "This place was featured on the food network!"...lol. I know, I know, just because a place was featured on TV doesn't mean they're good! Nevertheless, I wanted to check this place out! The Wallflower was featured on "You Gotta Eat Here!" basically Canada's version of Diners, Driveins, and Dives. Located on Main St, aka Hipster Central, their menu caters to vegans, the gluten intolerant, meat eaters, and everyone in between! Their daily specials! Wellington Meatloaf (2 pieces) $14 2/5 stars This was...meh. Considering that this is one of their signature dishes, my expectations were alot higher. The entire thing just tasted overwhelmingly like relish. And not in a good way. The relish favour was so strong it completely masked the gravy. On the up side, the meat was sufficiently tender. I liked how the edges were breaded and crispy. But other than that, this was a disappointment. As for the mash potatoes, they weren't whisked in butter, so they were a bit plain, but they were fluffy haha!
J At Vanbrosia.com
... loved the puff pastry crust surrounding the meatloaf that serves as the muffin; meatloaf itself OK, meat slightly 'loose'; eggs poached well but the sauce had a sour note that was slightly off putting; complements avg...

Just staring at this breakfast poutine is making my mouth water all over again! It is everything I like all put into one bowl, potatoes, bacon, cheese, gravy, and poached eggs. I love it! ...Their vegan Benedict is not what I expected, but I think it is still interesting and good to try. I really liked their vegan sausage though (photo below) it was spicy and really couldn't tell that I wasn't eating meat :) \
