We needed a stop off for something bitter after lunch (as one does) and hubby decided to push for something sweet too. Was NOT expecting this. The coffee was well made and delicious, the Chai Latte was also pretty bomb. But dang those doughnuts... Mine was freshly glazed and the apple and bacon fritter was incredible, not overly sweet but just scrumptious!
Sheepie and I have been coming to this cafe for a while. Sheepie loves donuts, so we started off with Timmy’s donuts. Then it was Breka. Then moved onto Cartems. Now it’s consistently 49th. He can’t get enough of them, lol. Forty Ninth Parallel Cafe & Lucky’s Doughnuts is a hipsterish cafe on the corner of Main and 13th. It’s always bustling with people chatting, on their laptops or reading a good book. I especially like the booth (which there is unfortunately only one of), that gives you a nice private table and seems to bounce of the sounds of the crowd away. The four sofa seats are nice, especially during the winter time when the fireplace is burning. It’s very cosy, but the noise level can be quite high for my comfort level, hence liking the booth and sofa area, not just for physical comfort.
The lucky’s donut is one of the best choices in Vancouver. And the coffee, food, atmosphere, seating and music are all good. We enjoyed a short break in 49 parallel at afternoon. Definitely I will bring my HK friends to there again.
There's a large variety of beverages.Almost all are great.
Ambience is great and so is the service.
Hygiene is well taken care of and so is the presentation of drinks!!
This coffee and doughnut shop has nice doughnuts. I wanted a cold drink as well, but they were expensive; nevertheless, they did have a good combo deal where I got a doughnut and a cold brew. I wish I could find cold brew in Abbotsford; it is a great drink for those who don’t really like hot coffee. The doughnuts are really tasty with just the right crispiness.
initially interested in finding this coffee shop because of the high zomato rating. the place is located on the hook, very strategic. and when it comes inside it turns out that the visitors are very crowded. with industrial design then selling all types of coffee from seeds to the coffee menu served, complete with a variety of choices of milk that we want like almond milk. all available here. besides, donut with a variety of flavors is served as companion friends drinking coffee to complement the character and taste of this place. we order various kinds of donut. and tastes good. but the latte that I ordered felt bitter on my tongue. and also that cool coffee machine with the brand name was caught my attention!
After dinner at Meet On Main, we decided to walk the food off cuz everyone was so full (but really we were looking for a dessert place). Anyhoo someone was craving for donut so we stopped over at 49th Parallel Cafe. We ordered the apple bacon fritter, creme brulee, and some kind of berry jam filling donut. Despite the excessive powder sugar on the berry jam filling donut, I actually thought it's the best donut out of all 3 and I'm usually not a big fan of donuts with fillings. It went well with the cold brew coffee too.
We finally have a chance to update our blog post on Forty Ninth Parallel since we last visited bout 3 years ago. I came on a Friday morning so it was not as busy as on a weekend. I was able to find plenty of seating to choose from. They also have several large tables outdoors too if you want to catch some fresh air.
I went there couple of times, coffee was good! Especially doughnuts was awesome!!! All of barista was friendly I love this mood! I recommend order to coffee with doughnuts. Chocolate doughnuts! Lol
Went here for hot chocolate and a donut for the first time. I really like the 70% dark hot chocolate. I think the donuts here are better then Cartems.
The doughnuts were amazing! We had the raspberry matcha and the blueberry peanut butter bismarck. The iced mochas were really more like an iced coffee with a touch of sugar and cream.
The best doughnuts in Vancouver. Pricey, but with good reason- fresh flavours with the best ingredients. The interior is gorgeous, cozy and bustling. Kind of wish they served a wider selection of beverages such as caramel macchiatos and the like but can't argue with their brewed coffee and their cold brew-- all great quality. Will be back and will definitely recommend to anyone looking for a doughnut, a coffee, a beautiful place to study or just catch up with a friend.
Quite possibly the tastiest donuts ever! The lemon meringue was my favourite, followed closely by the mango passion filling with raspberry glaze. can"t wait until I eat these donuts again!
Okay, easily one of the BEST coffees I've had during my visit to Vancouver. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I wanted to take home some of their coffee beans but needed them ground since I don't have a coffee grinder at home. They asked me exactly how I wanted them ground and helped me out with that. I got an iced latte and added a couple of pumps of their cane sugar syrup. So good!! I had to grab a couple of their Lucky's doughnuts and so glad I did!! My son polished off the long John while my other son and I polished off the lemon meringue! They're not overly sweet and the deep fried dough is done just crispy enough. I may have to go back for more. There's a whole leaf iced tea I want to try next!!!
Delicious doughnuts. Can't go wrong with any of their selections. Expect line-ups on weekends, service does goo quickly though. Fav: honey crueller, soft and light.
Lucky's Doughnuts is a popular and acclaimed doughnut shop that offer a good variety of unique flavours. I've had a chance to sample their Apple Bacon Fritter and Creme Brulee at their Main St. location.
Apple Bacon Fritter ($3.5): 3/5; The first thing that jumped out at me as I bit into the doughnut was how great the dough was. It was soft and fluffy with a slighty chewy texture. The doughnut was actually more savoury than sweet with the dough having a slightly salty taste that's further fortified by the bits of bacon inside and on top. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of flavour: apart from the glaze on top there wasn't really much going on inside the doughnut other than a few smal bits of bacon. Furthermore, although it's supposed to be an "apple bacon" doughnut, and I could not detect any apple flavour at all.
Creme Brulee ($3.25): 4/5; Again, the dough was fantastic. The doughnut was sweeter than the fritter, and was topped by a really nice, crisp glaze perfectly representative of the dessert it's modelled after. It also had a good amount of mildly-sweet caramel pudding. While the flavour of this doughnut is definitely an improvement over the fritter, I still found it to be a bit too demure.
Based off of my sampling, I do feel that the doughnuts are a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy their offerings overall and I will certainly be back in the future to try some of the other flavours. As much as I loved their dough however, I do wish that they could have been a bit bolder with their flavours. Those who like less sweet desserts will certainly appreciate these doughnuts more.
• for me, this is the best Doughnut shop to go to in the lower mainland!
• vast flavours to choose from
• different flavours to surprise you every time you go.
• try them all, you'll not be disappointed
• the lemon one is lemony, not too sweet, delectable
• my personal favourite is the creme brûlée, ohhhlala!!! Heaven, worth every single bite! The caramelized sugar, yum! The custard oohhh to die for!!! It's not too heavy, its heavenly I tell you! You can see vanilla bits in it. It is just soooo good!!!
• pair up your favourite doughnut with a cup of coffee or latte = satisfaction!
Atmosphere: This place is so packed all the time. It's loud inside too. Love the outdoor seating though. Service: Everyone is friendly here, I even got a wink from the guy handing me my doughnut. . Bottom line: This doughnut is heavy in weight, like damn... First bite was a legit wow, the peanut butter glaze is amazing and then the tart raspberry jam really kicks it up a notch. The doughnut is perfectly cooked, everything works. Check out my video below for more thoughts!
Cool spot, nice vibes in the place. Service staff is usually really friendly (I love this new friendly vibe in Vancouver). I've found the doughnuts are usually pretty good but sometimes they can be hit or miss - the only doughnuts I've found to be like this are the PB & J and Glazed. Their bismark or stuffed doughnuts are always on point though. I've had a coconut creme stuffed one topped with torched meringue years ago that I still drool over to this day.
Last week, I stopped in and was lucky enough to get one of Lucky's Limited Edition Sakura Blossom doughnuts. Not only was this doughnut one of the most amazing doughnuts I've ever had in my life (it was stuffed with a white chocolate match cream - zomg) but 100% of the proceeds of the purchase of the Sakura Blossom doughnut (on March 30th) went to charity - Dine Out for Life Vancouver, helping those living with HIV/AIDS. 12/10 it was SO good. The doughnut was fluffy and perfectly fried, filled with the most delicious pastry cream I've ever had (not too sweet but just right), and topped with a strawberry sakura flavoured glaze. It was heavenly. Honestly, if I knew how good they were - I would have bought a dozen.
I also picked up a bottle of their house-made Cold Brew and was pleasantly surprised by the taste and the amount of coffee in the bottle (easily 2-3 servings). Glad I went!
came here twice, once for coffee and once for tea...definitely try the coffee! I had the plum tea which I didn't find spectacular, but the coffee is nice and strong. I think the service is a hit or miss though, one time I had a smiley girl who was really helpful, and another time I had service that felt snobby and pretentious. The place is usually always busy but it's very cozy and bigger than the kits location.
I've been here twice and it's always packed ...im not one for donuts but when I saw luckys donuts in the window for the first time I was ready to become a donut lover!
I order a almond milk late and a sour dough donut and I couldn't have been happier. First of all as a lactose intolerant I was happy to have 2 options of milk. Hemp and almond. I've had both now and am super please. Don't let the hemp milk get cold though cause it starts to taste funny with the coffee. Otherwise it's great!
I'm sure I'll be back to try another donut and have a coffee :)
There’s a pretty good chance that if you’ve lived in Vancouver for a while you’ve probably heard of 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters. They’re a dominant force in the city, and deservedly so. Creating some of the most accessible coffee from anyone here, their consistent roasting pleases a huge majority of the coffee drinking public, all whilst also creating some of the best damned donuts money can buy!
We had the apple bacon fritter and the salted caramel old fashion - neither donuts disappointed. They were dense and so good - perfect to go with coffee.
It's a great place to go and chill but that being said, it can also be hard to find a seat.
The doughnuts here never seem to disappoint me. I'd rather have a doughnut here over Cartem's any day. The doughnuts are full of flavour and you could taste the quality in each bite. This location has plenty of space to sit and crack open a laptop to finish your work/assignments.
These doughnuts will make you popular at any gathering or even at work. Try one and you'll see what I'm talking about. FYI - I like the Creme Brule Doughnut.
Well this is where my partner and I met so I shouldn't complain. The doughnuts are tasty and the coffee was great. I do wish it was less filled with people sometimes as its tough to find seats but overall that's a positive.
As you can tell by all my photos, I've been to 49th Parallel/Lucky's Doughnuts like a gazillion times. (Recognize my profile pic?)
The doughnuts are amazing! Safe to say they're probably the best doughnuts I've ever had to date. They are light, soft and the perfect amount of sweetness. They're flavorful but not so overpowering. I'm always excited to see what kind of feature flavours they come up with.
On my first visit ever, I tried the Venezuelan Coffee and have been hooked ever since. I'm always craving it and have yet to try any other kind of coffee there. Pretty sure I got a few others addicted to that coffee too.
Also want to add that the cups are the cutest and their coffee art is on point!
Lucky's Doughnuts is owned by – and shares – the same gorgeous, expansive space as 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters. We’ve reviewed their Mount Pleasant café before, as part of our Search for Vancouver's Best Coffee. But with National Doughnut Day coming up, we’re dedicating this post to profiling their huge spectrum of legendary doughnuts – sampling new flavours and revisiting some classic standards.Personally, just the thought of heading for Mount Pleasant’s Lucky's gets all pleasure senses in my brain firing like crazy.
Good donuts and hot chocolate. Personally the treats are too sweet for my taste buds, but on the same spectrum as most other donut franchises.
Love the doughnuts and coffee here! The doughnuts here are some of the best in town, our favourites are the peanut butter jelly and the matcha (seasonal).
When the weather is as dreadful as it has been, there’s no better place to be than inside of a coffee shop with a warm beverage and a treat in hand. OH WAIT, 49th Parallel can satisfy both of those things! Given that it was also still the Hot Chocolate Festival, they had some combos available to sweeten the deal (ba dum tsst).
Wonderful, big and yummy, Lucky's will forever me my favourite place for donuts! Not only is this a lovely place for a study date, it's also quite a roomy cafe.
Ok so I finally had some time to try this place out in the late afternoon. The latte was done very very nicely here, and I mean in flavor. I didn't expect a strong latte and that was a nice surprise...
Ok onto the donuts that people were raving about. There was a lonely solo banana long John just sitting by itself. I decided to take the last one... And jeez Louise that was freaking good lol. Then I tried the creme brule. Wow I didn't expect such a nice vanilla bean flavor filling inside, nicely done. And finally the mango... Shut the front door! My first ever mango flavored donut and it's a hit! 3 dollar ish donuts and up alright I can see why. Service was excellent and beyond. Lady was very friendly and socialized about my day and gave her suggestions. Ambience and environment very rustic contemporary. The patio has big seating. Just make sure you keep your dog on the sidewalk.
I went here for the hot chocolate festival, and tried one of their doughnuts as well. I was thoroughly impressed with the quick service; I didn't even realize my drink was ready, hahah. I got a s'mores doughnut, which was very rich and smooth. The filling was amazing...I couldn't finish it, so I had to take it home and eat it over a week, haha xD
Throw Back Tuesday to last summer/fall. I stopped at Lucky’s Doughnuts for some of the best doughnuts in town, before going to H’s house, where he made fresh coffee with [a chunk of] coconut butter. Breakfast dates are some of the best ways to start off the day. I love coming in early when there’s nobody here yet, but usually it’s pretty crowded and there are no seats.
Such a nice surprise around the corner on a street packed with cafes. The doughnuts are amazing, the atmostphere is rustic and romantic in a way. My caramel latte today was just right.
Their coffee and donuts are always on point. I liked the passion fruit mango donut 😛 I just wanna eat all of the outside and then the insides and then lastly the donut doughy part. This coffee shop is a good place to go chat and meet up in but not as good for bringing your laptop/books. I got the Chocolate Festival "The Bees Knees" which was lavender hot chocolate with white chocolate-dipped lemon biscotti and housemate marshmallow.
Forty Ninth parallel are experts when it comes to brewed coffee drinks and doughnut goodness, but they are just as skilled when it comes to creating a mouth watering hot chocolate for the 2016 Hot Chocolate Festival! I had the Bee's Knees and it was amazing! I loved the creamy dark hot chocolate and the delicious lemon lavender biscotti's. The marshmallow was not my favourite, but the two biscotti's made up for it! Definitely check out 49th parallel for the festival!
What can be better than a perfect cup of Americano, a salted caramel doughnut and Dan Mangan on a cold Monday morning? Five more doughnuts to take home. The maple syrup doughnut has a wonderful gooey centre. This is worth a visit.
Coffee and doughnuts, what a pairing. The slightly new to Vancouver coffee shop 49th Parallel has married these two seamlessly. With the newly established Lucky’s Doughnuts within 49th Parallel, this has drawn in quite the crowd. I can completely understand why, with the Parisian influence within this bustling cafe, people have fallen in love. The teal blue walls, teal coffee cups, marble countertops and reclaimed wood detailing, the cafe looks like it belongs in a historically influenced area, and to bring it to Vancouver where there is so much action, adventure around the corner and passion is a great idea.49th Parallel’s counterpart Lucky’s Doughnuts offers a variety of delicious treats, all naturally made in house and sourced from local ingredients, the pink doughnut was simply amazing. 49th Parallel creates beautiful coffees with Instagram-worthy late art, a true must see if you are ever in the Vancouver area, and a frequent destination if you already live in the city.Go check it out, seriously you guys.
Been here 4 times because i really like their donuts. How their donuts compared to those chain donut stores? Less sweet, denser (in a good way), better quality ingredients (eg vanilla cream made with the beans not just extract), fresher, more expensive. Which means i will try to skip all other donuts until i am in the area to buy donuts from this shop. Btw, not a big fan of the coffee though.. To me it is bit on the sour and mild side. Just my personal preference is strong and no sourness...
The coffee is a bit bitter for my liking but the 'coffee donut' that was the game changer! Dipped in the coffee, this donut makes the coffee taste sooo much better! I also recommend the earl grey donut, I liked the balance of bitterness from the earl grey and sweet flavour.
What can I say, I'm a little bit in love with Main Street, which means that any cafe there has an advantage. This location is close to yummy restaurants, and a second hand book store down the street to bring some brain food with you. Also, because this place closes so late, it's always good for post-dinner noms.
Food/Drinks: They have a wide selection of teas--black, green, herbal, along with their coffee, if that's not your thing. Needless to say, the coffee is worth a try. The serving sizes are pretty big compared to other cafes, so you get your money's worth. The donuts, that's it's own story! Original, cinnamon, lemon poppyseed and the sweeter, jam filled donuts are great for all kinds of preferences.
Ambience: Big windows for people watching. Communal, bar seats, and individual tables available. There's also a pretty comfy nook for reading at the back. The space is huge, and is great to get studying/reading done. There are a couple of plugs if you sit at the communal table.
Service: The baristas are pretty fun to chat with and make comments as they serve you your orders. :)
Transport: Very easy to get to. Take the 99 from Broadway, stop at Main then walk a couple of blocks.
Came to Van specifically for donuts. This pB&J was just what I was hoping for. Delicious. Friendly staff. Cute place. Cozy seats and real comfortable spot to chill. I shall return!
Great donuts. Pleasant and an inviting place. The only reason why I give it a 4/5 is because I find the prices of the artisinal drinks and pastries to be pricey.
I had the most amazing donuts here. The donuts are deceptively not sweet at all, which is refreshing, and contributes to a boost of flavour. The tea is amazing as well, there is a good variety of good teas. The atmosphere is casual, making it a good place to meet people, or have an evening social with friends. However I was not a big fan of the coffee here, it's probably a good idea to get suggestions when you order.
Food: 4/5 Service: 3/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 Price: Avg. $9/person
Return: Definitely Must Eat item(s): Apple Bacon Fritter !!!
I love their donuts a lot. Especially the Apple Bacon Fritter, it tastes Super Good! Indeed, every time i feel a little sad because i usually miss the Mango Square. it is not always available from the selection, but, i still come back with hopes :D
This is my favourite place to go to when I want something sweet to satisfy my cravings. I've tried different flavours but my favvv one is peanut butter and jelly! The dough is moist but I only wish the ratio of peanut sauce to jelly was a little more. Staff is friendly.
Great place to chat and hangout over a coffee and a doughnut (or two). The espresso-based beverages are always consistent. My go to here is the iced vanilla latte as it's just the right amount of sweetness (for me) and balanced throughout. Favourite doughnut has got to be the tiramisu one.
If you're looking for a place to study - this is probably not the best choice for several reasons. The cafe is consistently busy, so finding space can sometimes be an issue. There is limited Wi-Fi (unless you have ShawGo) and a lack of outlets, which makes sense since they probably don't want people sitting around for hours on end on one cup of coffee.
Overall, great place to catch up with friends or enjoy a good cup of coffee.
I love Luckys doughnut. Ever since I tired their doughnut I'm hooked! My favourite is mango passion fruit. Too bad it's off the menu now. Their creme brûlée is really good too. I wish their online order website work. Every time I tried to order online I always run into some glitch. Never works and I end up calling instead.
I was really lucky to get a taste of both the Blueberry and Matcha Bismark donuts today. My friend and I went halfers on both and decided we preferred the matcha as it had a great tasting citrus topping. The blueberry one was still good but we just appreciated the contrast of the match and citrus so much more. Looking forward to my next visit to try out a new flavour.
I'm a little bit mad that there were no flavors available other than the old fashioned ones when I went today. I was really excited to try the blueberry bismarck or the matcha white chocolate, but they didn't make any the whole 2 hours I was there! Other than that, I had the salted caramel, which was extremely gooey and delicious. I like that the salt wasn't overpowering, but I think the donut could have benefited from a crunch factor. Ambience is nice, but a little bit too loud for studying. Service was kind and prompt. Definitely will be back, hopefully there are other flavours available next time.
Great coffee, good quality! I love the donuts and the whole vibe of this place! Great place to catch up with a friend... when it's not as crowded.
Why I love this place: I love everything about them. The donuts, the drinks, and the feel
Would I come back: yes
Would I recommend it to others: yes! And I tell them to order the beignets!
Hey guys! Since National Doughnut Day (June 5th), Lucky’s Doughnuts has found new ways for donut lovers to enjoy their favourite dessert with 6 new summertime flavours and a great Baker’s Dozen Combo. Do these new flavours change the donut game or should you stick with your traditional Old Fashion recipe? Read on to find out.
Love coming here to have a coffee with a friend or even just working on some tasks! Their coffee smells amazing and I can only take so much of it so I make sure I choose some good coffee. Their almond pistachio croissant is oh-so-good. I can't wait to try more of their pastries!
Love this place. The coffee is good, donuts are amazingly unique and delicious. And the cups are just so darn pretty. But that is one squeaky, inconvenient patio door. Makes it hard to work there. Can we just prop it open? Can't wait to try their beignets next time!
I have heard many good things about Forty Ninth Parallel and Lucky’s and it has been on my list of cafes to check out for the longest time, however, it’s a long trek just for doughnuts and coffee so I never made my way out there. Luckily, my friend KitKat was there when I texted her about when we were gonna hit the gym later in the day and she started raving about this glorious earl grey lavender blueberry bismark ($3.50), which she graciously offered to buy for me. She went as far as saying that it was the most delicious doughnut that she has ever tasted (and I’m sure she’s tasted a fair share of doughnuts. Hahah)I was afraid that the doughnut would be placed in one of those paper bags that you would get from other doughnut places like Tim Hortons, but this lovely doughnut came in a box so that the icing on top wouldn’t get smeared everywhere.
It's donut time!
I have the yummy mango & passion fruit and P&B donut. Live very good. I actually prefer these donuts over Cartem's.
They know their coffee.. The baristas here actually make coffee properly, from the latte art, the difference between a latte and a cappucino, to what a real macchiato is. I've had a couple hit and miss donuts here, hence the lost star, but the last one I had (classic glazed) was so good with my iced latte. Clean, spacious, quick service, and a pretty great place to chill on Main.
Lucky's handcrafted doughnuts are made fresh daily and features local and seasonal ingredients. The doughnuts were absolutely perfect afternoon snacks on our way to Harrison Hot Springs. Happy sweet tooth!
I never say no to going here, and will come from afar to visit it. The space is big, the atmosphere is fun and the patio is nice when it’s warm enough! The stars of the show here are definitely the donuts and coffee. BEST donuts, and good coffee. Friendly, quick service too.
mom and i love dessert and have heard good things about lucky's donuts so popped into this shop for a taste of the ONLY donut she enjoys, the french cruller. french cruller ($3.50): this was quite different from your tim hortons cruller as it didn't feel like it was dripping with oil! the outside was a bit crustier but the inside was still soft and fluffy. icing onto was just drizzled (not the whole thing dipped) and was a good sweetness ratio. not the best donut ever but not bad either 3.75/5 overall: i would love to come back and try their other flavours (matcha bismark!) but i don't think i would pay almost 4 dollars for a plain tasting donut. bad choice on our part
Decent Donut. I tried their Orange Honey Pistachio donut and I thought it was good overall. It was very moist and I definitely tasted orange in there. I can't wait to go back and try their other donuts!
It's very busy! Getting quite popular but it's a good place fast service even when the lineup is backed out the door!
Lovely Treat. A chai latte and a maple bacon fritter is my idea of a perfect treat on a Sunday. Pure heaven!
Beautiful setting, beautiful coffee. Not really sure that we need a hundred and tenth comment on this place...!
But I was surprised by the amount of reviews focusing on the donuts rather than coffee. That was only the first page though... I'm sure there are many, many more with such comments. It seems like most people understand the bean quality at this place. The line separator at the front speaks to the popularity of this place...
There was someone constantly on till when I arrived so service was prompt. I thought it was cute how there is a menu on a clip-board attached to the front counter. With dietary restrictions I stayed away from the donuts, but enjoyed peering through the window into the kitchen where it looked action packed.
Had to fight a bit for seating, but enjoyed that there was a window bar. Also enjoyed the range of activity: from loud chatting to studying on computers. Feel like it would be an easy place to study comfortably, or a fun place to stop by after dinner.
Usually prefer a soy cappuccino at a third wave coffee joint like this to an americano, on account of the acidity. So that's what I got. It was really, really well-poured and delicious. I'd have to say that it was the best-prepared one I had on this excursion to Vancouver.
Excellent donuts. Not a fan of baked goods in general, and donuts in particular, but the donuts here are amazing. I've tried 1) chocolate oreo - good and not overly chocolatey-sweet - my chocolate-loathing friend enjoyed this one as much as I did 2) lemon poppyseed - my favorite! 3) PB&J - this is the size of two donuts, so definitely only order to share 4) orange pistachio - a little underwhelming compared to the preceding three options. I really like the heavy, slightly chewy dough.
Mmmm Salted Caramel. The Salted Caramel is to die for, the Mango cream is pretty amazing as well. All the other one were alright. I was not a big fan of the bacon apple one.
Great selection of coffee with pour over options. So nice to have a coffee made with love.
