Review Biercraft Bistro - Vancouver

Was a spontaneous after work drinks session. Made it on time for the happy hour and was quite pleased with the service, price and quality of food. It's a beer place with a great selection but I was quite surprised how good the tacos were.

I really like this location. I come in every week or two and there are always new selections on tap....very nice selection of local brews and everything tastes fresh. Food and service are also great. See you soon.

Love this spot! Great service and very reasonably priced drinks. there was live music on Wednesday which really added to the warm atmosphere of the place. Also impressed by their ability to accommodate for plant based/vegan dietary restrictions so easily - will definitely be coming back!

The mussels were amazing! Our server suggested some French fries to soak up some of the mussel broth. That was a good call. The artichoke dip with taco chips was very good. The taco chips seemed home made and fresh. They were much thicker than your typical chips you would buy in a store. The selection of beer is outstanding!

The exterior renovation is very nice. I almost drove right past looking for the yellow building and sign. Much sleeker now. Loads of outdoor seating options which is very nice. Reliably good pub food. I had the beefy mac and cheese. Delicious and really stick to your ribs cheesy. The yam fries were perfect. My dining partner had his usual, the beef dip with a side Ceasar salad. It looked yummy too. Street parking usually not a problem. Great neighbourhood spot.

Good beer selection. Otherwise, expensive for what it is. $14.25 for this burger and salad... The burger on its own is $7 so this tiny little salad is $7.25 🙃

Had the smoked salmon bennies. 3/4 of the plate were tater tots, and they only served HALF a croissant with 2 eggs. The smoked salmon was minimal. It seems like they they’re trying to see how little food they can serve for the maximum price. Definitely not a good value. Taste wise, it wasn’t too bad but I won’t be back.

Happy hour beers with friends was nice but the service at this Biercraft was unfortunately really poor. 2/4 the key staff we interacted with were pretty passive aggressive, borderline hostile which was weird/unfortunate. We did not appreciate their attitude - didn't say anything not to sour our own group's mood, but that was just a really poor experience. Also the paper menus were dirty and the QR code didn't load up properly. Caught a minute or two of the live music before we left which sounded really nice.

BierCraft Bistro recently launches a new menu, and they are available across three locations – Commercial Drive, Cambie, and Westbrook Village (UBC). The original beer bar is known for its extensive selection of craft and imported beer, particularly the Belgian beer. Few weeks ago, I was invited to try the new menu, and I visited the Cambie location for its spacious interior and sun-laden patio seating.
Picky Diner
It feels nostalgic at Biercraft Bistro when it comes to the same ole awesome Belgian beers and the same friendly staff who genuinely welcomes you to the neighbourhood. However, the food menu seems a bit too ambitious, taking on too many world cuisines. We do not question anyone’s ability to pair great artisan beers with different cuisines in the world. But rather than being impressed with Dan Dan Noodles, Tuna Taco or Jerk Prawns, I desire a great bowl of mussels & fries from here, the classic that used to be best in the city.

Biercraft bills itself as Vancouver’s original Beer Bar and they have three locations across Greater Vancouver. The have an extensive selection of craft and imported beers from around the world, with an emphasis of Belgian beer. They recently revamped their menu, so I dropped by with my friend Rick to check it out.

I’m quite sad to see an historically lovely venue go so downhill after the Donnelly’s got their gross little hands on it. Nothing says “Belgium” like soggy fried chicken and sad nachos with gritty cheese dip.

Great find.
Staff are friendly, decor is unique & you get a side of popcorn (the special spice mix/seasoning will make you drool!) with your drink order.

My recommendations- Brussel sprouts hash with bacon is a definite must.

Bottom line: This is a pretty great place to chat. There weren't too many TVs which can be a distraction for some people. Service was great, the beer selection was phenomenal, and the popcorn is a nice touch. I've heard good things about their food too so I'll have to try that next time. . Out the door price: $40 including tip

Kicking off Dine Out Vancouver this year for us was Biercraft Bistro. I had always wanted to try Biercraft but always forgot about them, so when I saw that they were participating in Dine Out and offering a $30 menu, it was a go!. Biercraft Bistro’s pre-meal snack was seasoned popcorn!. The appetizer version of Biercraft’s Salt Spring Island Marinier Mussel and Kennebec Frites was delicious. I couldn’t stop slurping up the garlic, shallots, white wine, fresh herbs, monte au beurre broth but boy was it garlicky! There was so much garlic AngryRussian actually thought there were orzo in the broth 😂!
Nosh And Nibble
One-liner: A very filling $30 Dine Out Vancouver option with some of the best service during this busy season
Highlight: Duck Confit
Recommended order: Duck Confit, Bouillabaisse, and Chocolate Torte
Would I go back? Yes.

Check out my blog post for the full review!

Food here is always good. The seafood is always cooked perfectly and not over seasoned. Never had a bad experience here in terms of service or food quality. Price is reasonable.

Pretty cool place , round the corner I had the burger and it was great . Though it is a Belgian place most people were having the regular beer like corona or budwieser ..

It was my husband birthday. He picked this restaurant so he can drink different beers. They don't accept reservation for 8 or more after 6pm so we had to come early and save 4 seats thats coming at 7. 4 of us first start drinking while waiting other 4 to come. The waitress is nice. The food is actually so so. To be honest, it's my first time drinking french onion soup and have no clue it should be salty LOL LOL its soooo salty. I had to get my husband to drink it all. I had veggie sandwich (didnt take pic of it) , it was not bad. Too bad they don't serve yam fries.

Lots and lots of choices on Belgian beers. I asked for a recommendation on dark beers and the waitress made a good suggestion. I liked it. Their burger is really nothing more than ordinary, except it's on the pricier side for just a plain burger.

My partner was overwhelmed by the choices of beer! After the arduous decision making process, the beer was a real treat. The waitress recommended the Flemish mussels and they were fabulous. Then came the Mac and Cheese and the Bouillabaisse. The serving of Mac and Cheese was small and contained more meat than we expected. The Bouillabaisse was tiny with a couple of prawns and a few bits of fish. With it came a bit of oily melba toast which was slathered in a garlicky paste and was inedible. We had to order a serving of bread to soak up the liquid.

The menu states that you will get $3 or $4 rebate if you order a main dish and a side. The waitress refused as the discount is "being discussed" by the manager.

Great spot if your dining with your dog by your side, on the patio of course. Great selection of Belgium beers. Parking is plenty in the day, night time may be a challenge. Food is good.

Excellent selection of beers from around the world. Mostly European so if you are looking for local brews it's probably not the best place for you. Food is pretty good but a bit overpriced for what it is

This is my first online review for any place - ever! But after the service my wife and I received today, I felt obliged to write something.

Walked in and one of the bartenders said sit wherever - okay, no prob. Then it went all downhill from there… First server (there were at least 5 I'd say) eventually got around, after maybe 10 minutes, to giving us a drink menu and three food menus. After looking through the menus for 10+ minutes or so, my wife decided but I'd been wanting a sampler but couldn't find it on our 4 menus. So I asked another server if they had samplers. She said they did and that she'd grab me the 'sampler' menu (don't know why we weren't given that from the get go, but anyway…). Finally, 10+ minutes of her walking past us, not to mention the other 4-5 servers walking past us (our table was right next to the busiest area where all servers walk between the bar and the main seating area) pretty much doing nothing minus wiping a table and pouring a couple glasses of water, we left - and will never return

Great food, better beer. BierCraft is one of my favourite places in Vancouver. They have a great selection of really tasty food, and their beer selection is second to none. I do find the prices a little high, but it's certainly a place that I will continue to visit.

Saturday night with friends we were seated quickly, amazingly friendly staff, very helpful with suggestions. We ordered appys everyone was excellent. Fish tacos, chicken wings, lettuce wrap (pulled pork), frites. Great selection of draft beers. Great experience. Will definitely be back.

These guys are awesome. I went in late on a Friday night and had an amazing experience. the staff are welcoming, friendly, kind, and helpful. i will definitely be back. i will definitely be recommending this place.

Fantastic, Real Quality. I've had the pleasure of eating and drinking almost everything on the menu here. The beer list is absolutely THE best in Vancouver, with constant updates, and the food is made with quality and creativity. The best mussels (huge and fresh) I've had in Van (although the size always depends on the season)...so if you're into mussels, it's worth your time. Also the non-pretentious atmosphere is refreshing next to the other spots that propound to be of quality.

Beers, beers, beers -- what else can I say?. If you love beer, you gotta love BierCraft. (I liked the name better when it was Stella's.) Every time I go in this one or its brother on Commercial, I basically play beer roulette. I don't know the differences between Belgian beers well enough to sound authoritative about them. But whatever I've ordered at Stella's/BierCraft over the years, it's been great. Especially the monkish brews. Food's decent too. Not spectacular, but at least as good as you'd expect from a gastropub, and superior to grunge pubs. This is a destination restaurant for the suds, though, not the grub.

Love the beer flight. Cheap way to try new beers :)
Jack777
Over priced and rude owner. Food was Ok but expensive, and drinks were pricey. But couldn't get over how badly this manager guy treated one of the girls working there. Pretty rude in front of the customers. Some not so nice people here. I'll give it a pass next time!

First visit to BierCraft Bistro, food and service was great! Had the Charcuterie and the smoked oysters were absolutely amazing! And the Mumbai chicken wings, best wings I've ever had! What more can I say, every dish we had was Delish! Definitely will visit again soon!

Great people, awesome beer, good food!

Good place but taquitos $12 for two? They tasted good but waaaaayyyyyyy over priced was expecting at least 4-5 taquitos

Great drinks, nice patio. Had a lovely dinner with my gal pal out on the patio on a sunny day. Tried the mojito which was super good with tons of fresh mint leaves and had the fish tacos and a bucket of fries for dinner. Loved the fries...crispy and fresh cut with skins; served with a nice mayo/chili dip. On a previous visit, I had the Drunken Mussels, which were really good too. There is a kiddie menu too; my kids tried the mac 'n cheese (excellent) and the fish 'n chips. The fish was fresh and delicious but the serving of fish looked kind of small. A great place for brunch, and a fantastic place to try beers. You can order beer samplers (tiny glasses of different beers)...served on a cool serving tray where they're all lined up.

Massive beer menu, with a nice selection of wines, too -- and a smart staff. Had a lovely glass of NZ Sauvignon Blanc, and a local beer: Central City (Double hop?). Both were nice. Clean lines on the beer, no doubt about it.

Tasty and creative appetizers too. Just got a few: edamame, beans, and poutine (not for me). All were good, but the poutine were really heavy, or so I was told.

Just love going to a place where there's more than a few beer options. The beer flight is cool too: you get to choose 4 different beers for around $10 (4oz each). We got this last time, but got a little tipsy cause it was so hot out and we hadn't eaten much that day ;)

Awesome fries!!

A really nice place to socialize, drink Austrian beers and eat. Fantastic food. Crowded lively atmosphere. One of my favorite Vancouver restaurants.

Totally Sucked!. Worst meal of the year. Ordered taquitos that turned out to be 2 fingerlings cut longways for $11. Would have been better off going to 7-11 where I'd geet 3 for $3. The fish tacos $12 were bland and the calamari $12 chewy with no batter. Furthermore the male server was not particularly attentive. Beer was good though.

Well stocked, good food, poor staff knowledge. Don;t get me wrong, the servers here were all very friendly, prompt, courteous and otherwise perfect. However, a specialty beer bar should have staff who are knowledgeable about the beer. I asked some very rudimentary questions about their offerings (e.g. which of these are "sours"? do you have a biere de garde?) and received totally blank responses. Even after the server went to consult a colleague, we were given no further information about the beers.

This kind of service contrasts massively with the Alibi Room, for example, which is a beer bar with some extremely knowledgeable staff. When you go to a specialty bar, the service experience should include some degree of confidence that your servers understand their product. I didn't get that here at all.

I rate this bar good due to the excellent range of beers, but I advise the owners to train new staff on the basics.

Good Beer, Invisible Cilantro. After a long walk up Cambie in the hot sun, we thought it would be nice to stop in for a pint at BierCraft. On a Sunday afternoon it was not too busy, and we were seated right away outdoors.

We ordered the Drunken Mussels with sides of frites and bread, a pint and a beer cocktail.

The server did not seem to know a lot about beer even though this place touts its craft and specialty beer status. Under "Biere de Garde" on the menu, there were no bier de gardes and the server said that the person who wrote the menu probably used it as a "loose term to describe the beer", which does not smack of authoritative beer knowledge to me.

The mussels were tasty, but the menu had stated pilsner, lime butter and cilantro in the ingredients and when the dish arrived, there was nary a cilantro leaf to be found. When we asked the server, he told us it had probably "broken down" in the sauce. That must be some serious blending going on in the kitchen for there to be no visible evidence of cilantro left-- not even a greenish hue. He returned from the kitchen with a little pot of chopped up wilted cilantro for us to add to the mussels ourselves.

We would probably return for the beers that they do have, but only with prior knowledge of them gleaned for ourselves, and we won't order the food.

Stella's. Smoked salmon breakfast and Spinach feta omelette were good.

Great neighbourhood spot. Fun joint, great appies, good times, and love the beer selection!

It was super tasty...a little over priced. The atmosphere was not what we expected...it wasn't the pub we were expecting...rather more like a roomier bin 941. The drunken mussels were a tasty choice and we'll be back for the beer.

Try the mussels!. Great place for catching up with friends. It's not fancy but it has a solid menu, decent prices and the mussels menu is fantastic. Casual and great for drinks and larger portions.

It was great when it was stellas, but now the food is too over seasoned. My wild mushroom penne was way too salty, my date muscles were also really salty. Great place for a drink and dessert not the best for dinner any more =(

A restaurant by any other name..... Love this place, have since it opened. Order the lightly seared tuna--oh my! Service is impeccable (shout out to Jenn and Han). No matter what name it goes by, it's great.

Love for Stella's. The restaurant is much bigger than it appears from the outside. The service is great and the food is always good. Perfect for lunch or afterwork drinks. I've never been here for dinner, but I'm hoping to soon! I recommend the pulled pork sandwich, mac and cheese (may be only on the kids menu), and the mussles.

Belgian delight in our 'hood. Stella's is a short two block walk from our place and we find ourselves there often. It's a popular place to eat in the Cambie neighbourhood - usually when we're there it has the perfect mix of bustling, but not too busy to find a table.

The Belgian beer list is its claim to fame - it's like browsing a wine list and fun to order something different each time. They have mussels in 1/2 pound ($8) and full pound ($14) servings, and like the beers you could order a different flavour every time if you wanted - there are about 6 kinds. They're good quality, always piping hot and the flavour combos are imaginative without being weird.

Appetizers are also great - the bocconi salad, the beet salad and the arancini (fried risotto balls with cheese - yum!) are my favourites. We've ordered mains once or twice and they've been both huge and quite good.

Great place. Mixed clientele - young types, middle aged and up. Service is pretty good. I find the layout of the space a bit off for some reason, but that is only a minor quibble.

Surprised by the number of bad reviews. I've been there a few times and the food was pretty good.... not brilliant. But the last time I was there with family from out-of-town and we all loved it. Great food and really really attentive and helpful service. Thanks, Scot!!

Great place. Been to Stella's on Commercial, but this was the first time I tried the Cambie Stella. I loved it. Food was great and service was excellent. Really helpful and attentive and the food was served really fast and was hot and fresh.

We ate from the tapas menu and shared a bunch between the four of us. Mussels were really good. The fries are spectacular. The Indian chicken wings were fantastic. Only complaint would be that the calamari was a bit soggy and a bit oily, but everything else was really good.

We shared one really good dessert. It was the bread pudding and was a pretty good portion. We also had one bottle of wine and we were really satisfied. For that, the bill was a very reasonable $30 per person.

Really nice atmosphere too. I highly recommend this place for a fun, casual dinner with great service.
Raoul
Probably the most overhyped restaurant in Vancouver. Good beer selection. Thin and seemingly random wine list, and food that verges on inedible. Do yourself a favour, and pay a bit more at some place lik Chambar, where food, drinks and service are consistantly better.
Joshua Simmons
Unhappy, slow service, rude staff, over priced food which was poorly cooked. Don't go, total waste of money

Love it - was: disappointed. Update: (July 2009)

I went back in the last half of July and had a great time. Service was great even through the shift change. We sampled a broad range of dishes and I liked all of them (no wings though). No oysters on the half shell this day but no problem.

I am glad I gave it another chance.

-----------------
I could not wait until this opened on Cambie! It finally opened and I eagerly went planning to love it.

Went the other night & had the wings plus some imported beers. The beers were pretty good but I constantly felt we were being upsold by the server. The wings taste was pretty good but the wings themselves were the most irregular I had ever had. Because of this, some wings were well done others less so :(. heh
Kele Nakamura
Great food. Eat the wings for sure. Lots of good tapas. Lots o beer to choose from as well.

Had two beers the other night that the bartenders recommended me, along with some fries. The fried were nothing special, but both beers had two of the most unique profiles ever. Thumbs up the staff, who sure know thier product.
QuietQueen
Good food but the dessert was the best!. I realize that Stella's is known for it's beer and I had one (a Celis) and both my friend and I had the Angus Beef tenderloin. Both were good portions and the beef was perfectly cooked but the dssert was spectacular! Chocolate banana pudding with an espresso sauce and caramel apple crisp a la mode...shared and enjoyed by all!

...if you are into Belgian beers you likely won’t find a better spot in the city. Other than the beer, BierCraft is probably famous for its mussels, but we are busy trying other things so we rarely have mussels here. It was a bit cooler out than it has been this summer, so we decided to sit inside the restaurant. The popcorn they serve you (free) when you first sit down is so delicious, you have to be competitive to get your share: it was flavoured with a combination of cumin, chili pepper and chipotle. We had to get a second bowlful from the server. BierCraft has a wide selection of taps and bottled beers – with proper glassware to match – Lisa especially likes having La Chouffe Ale in a proper La Chouffe glass with the gnome (or tomte if you’re of Swedish descent like Lisa) on it. We choose to eat on their patio to see more sunshine. I was really satisfied with their service very fast and super friendly with all smiles.

Options, Options, Options~ When you want to visit a bar that offers over 120 different Belgium and craft beers, local cask pourings, a regionally inspired menu of tapas and bistro food, "Biercraft" is my recommendation. As their name suggests they do beer and do things with beer. Beer is their craft. They offer 20 beers on tap and over 100 in bottle. If you can't decide on what you want you can "choose your own adventure". 4 beers in tasting size glasses, served in a handsome wood bar. This is the popular option and with it you get more bang for your buck. You try a little of each before you committing. A great way to get someone who is a little set in their ways to try something new. Most exciting is their offering of beer cocktails. Drinks made with beer as a pose to the traditional spirits we are familiar with. The one I tried was their "Frulini". It is their take on the "Bellini". But instead of sangria mix and wine, a fruity light beer goes in as your alcohol. In this case it was

Biercraft is a great little joint with two locations that offer up a quaint patio setting, an extensive beer list, and some quality eats. Not much else one can ask for.
The beet salad joined Arnold Palmer - nice greens, crumbled goat cheese, beets and pecans with a light balsamic vinegar dressing.

But the highlight of the meal were the Fish Tacos - three very colourful tacos packed up with cod marinated in achiote and citrus, along with white cabbage and salsa and drizzled with lime juice and fresh cilantro. Excellent taste, not enough of them though.

Destination was Stella's on commercial drive, only to find out that it was renamed as BierCrafts. Tapas to share included Sesame Tuna - black sesame crusted yellow fin seared tuna with wilted spinach (which was even tastier than the tuna). Fish Tacos , a favourite of my guest and part of the day's special, could not be ignored. Nicely presented and as much nice tasting. My guest also found out that the change in name has something to do with a bakery in Edmonton called Stella's who is forcing anyone using the name to ditch it. From sea to land we moved with the Beef Carpaccio - the crispy capers were the best of accompaniments that also included Spanish onion shavings and garlic rouille. The mystery of the name change continued - why a generic name like BierCraft to replace something as un

Spacious restaurant, tons of beer, not too busy on a Sunday afternoon. I don't drink beer, so someone else can review that. The house-made patty was what caught my eye and being veggie-curious and starting to be meat-guilty, I gave it a go. Garden Burger ($13 +$1 mushrooms +$2 soup of the day) House-made nut & veggie patty, citrus aioli, onions, lettuce and tomato As burgers go, the height and size of this one is on the larger side. Tall enough that you will probably not be able to fit it in your mouth. Often veggie patties are fake-meat soy or some bean thing, so this one sounded promising with the use of nuts. A bit thin, but texture was good with the grilled crust. Sadly, the patty (and everything, including my mushroom add-on) was overpowered by the curry used. Which makes it more like a curry vegetarian burger. It's still a reasonably tasty burger overall, but don't count on nuts or veggies from your patty to make any contribution. Nicely grilled bun complete with black grill marks but not overdone. Tiny amount of mushrooms for $1. I had to open up my burger and look for it. Not worth it. Medium bowl of soup for +$2 as a substitution for either fries or salad which are normally served with their sandwiches (normally soup alone is $6). On the Sunday I went it was a very thick and hearty stew-like curry lentil soup -- definitely helps to make this single purchase a filling meal. At $14, this burger is sort of good and bad. If you like curry, then the curry flavour might make this a nice burger. If you were hoping for a more gourmet experience with flavours of nut, veggies, tomato and citrus aioli, then pass. Curry is strong stuff even if you don't glob on so much as to make everything bitter. Aside from burger quality, $13-$15 gets you a decent amount of food, not just in the burger but with the +$2 soup addon. You can probably pass on the soup and go for the fries for a just-as-filling meal. Friendly, prompt service.

A maple glazed pork chop was the main associated with the Bococcini salad. To me this seemed a refined take on normally rustic dish. The pork chop was succulent, if ever so slightly overdone for my tastes,

While we were around East Van, brainstorming what we wanted for dinner, Tiff suggested we go to BierCraft Bistro since she was craving mussels. (Yes, I'm going to have mussels in every other post these days.) Since it's been on my wishlist forever, I happily obliged. So much beer to choose from! The thing is, Biercraft is known for Belgium beer... which I know nothing about. Apparently Canada's beer industry is "disproportionately domestic compared to that of other countries". Not surprised. So... I opted for this Belgium witbier because it sounds cool: Troublette . Apparently it's pretty famous. I enjoyed it as it was pretty refreshing, light, and slightly tart. We shared the fish tacos ($11) with achiote and citrus marinated fish, cabbage, salsa and crema, chimichurri, and fresh cilantro. This was surprisingly the highlight of the meal, I thought. The fish tacos were seared rather than deep fried, which meant no batter, just fish which was very well marinated. Actually, quite ge

Located on Cambie street, BierCraft Bistro is specialized in offering a wide range of Belgian beer, tapas, and European fares. I have to admit that I was somewhat intimidated to inquire about the beer list as I'm no beer expert and haven't got a clue. Nonetheless, our server was extremely friendly and informative in making several suggestions on the types of beer that would best suit our taste. Thi ordered the Maredsous triple, an abbey ale with golden and creamy body with a nice smooth finish. Pepe and I shared the Moinette Brune $20 with soft nose, caramel and herb undertones. It had a full body with a sweet finish and we really enjoyed it. Housemade potato chips to snack on while chucking down the beer. These are complementary, refillable, and..*munch munch.. super addictive! Since french onion soup is one of my all time favourite soups, I have to write about how good Biercraft's was. Made with emmental and edam cheese, and garlic crostini, the cheese was baked to golden brown, cris

While I'm totally happy that there are many businesses flourishing on Cambie Street (apparently, Biercraft being one of them), I'm not that happy when the establishment has really expensive beer. Maybe because (a) I'm not a beer drinker (b) I'm not a beer snob and (c) I am there just primarily for the food. I ordered a Biercraft brunch (scrambled eggs, potatoes and toast, $9.50). Since they didn't have hot sauce that wasn't Tabasco,
