Review Oyster Express - Vancouver

Michelle Hillock
If you're in Chinatown and crave oysters THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO. I've been here a number of times over the last 5 years and haven't been disappointed. The oysters are fresh and service is genuine. They usually have a handful of different types and can describe them to you. Fresh shucked in the restaurant. Plated on a bed of ice with grated horseradish. Cocktail sauce, Mignonette sauce, chili water served along side. They have happy hour!!

Fresh & delicious oysters!! Can’t compare with other oyster restaurants for this quality and service! Oyster shucking skill is one of the best I ever seen at the restaurant - clean & not damaging oyster meat. Highly recommend!

DAMMM!!!! I finally came here and love the happy hour! I got two dozen fresh oysters, fries, and I especially love the deep fried oysters!!! Cool place to chill and have a alcoholic beverage, or a 100!!!

5 . Five ! Five stars ! What a delightful little not so hole in the wall on the wrong side of town place. On the edge of china town which would seem like the middle of no where, then you walk in… woot woot woot oyster heaven , served up by a duo shucker and server, fried oysters were crispy and yet so juicy and the half shell selection was delightful fresh and came with the expected accoutrements. For a little hole in the wall Oyster bar on the edge of town. Chinatown. I didn’t want to leave. Fresh beer and an interesting take on the bubbly. Love this place.

Family owned oyster bar . The place is small in chinatoen . The couple has run the business for 10 years , a lovely couple . The oysters are very fresh , will definitely recommend friends here .

Their oysters are always so fresh and plump! Love the $1.50 happy hour deal pre-covid, now post-covid dine-in at $2. Had nanoose bay and pink pearl today. The pink pearls were HUGE - fresh, plump, sweet, and a great deal even outside the daily happy hour price. The staff is knowledgeable and they rotate the daily oysters so you get to try different kinds on different days. Their sides are also yummy, especially yam fries. They pair so well with oysters. My go-to spot for oysters in Vancouver 10/10!

Enjoyed 2 dozen oysters of 4 varieties, all were fresh and expertly shucked. The white wines were amazing, I sampled 3 varieties and all were excellent choices that would please many pallets. For those not into raw oysters, the fried oysters, soy chicken wings and fries were all hot, crispy and well seasoned! Already planning a trip back with girlfriends :)

Friendly and intimate place for tasty and fresh oysters! Happy hour(s) a must. My wife and I tried both raw and fried and were thoroughly impressed. The yam fries also went down well. I really can’t fault this place!

The oysters are the reason to go here. They are excellent, and they always have a $2 oyster that is fresh and tasty. This is a place for those who chew, for celebrating the slimy brine of the mollusk. Reid is the go-to oyster expert, but seriously, go for the oysters. Good bear and wine list, and a full menu of other stuff but don't worry about that, just go for the oysters.

my favourite place to have oysters in the city. Very attentive and knowledgeable staff, excellent service, and master shuckery! I give it an extra star for having found a pearl in one of my oysters! Now to complete the necklace! see you soon, Oyster Express!

Excellent experience for our birthday night, super friendly staff. The owner came out and said hi. Before we left they brought us a shot on the house. Will 100% be back with friends And bathrooms were clean! That's a plus. Lol

Freshest oysters with a huge selection, knowledgeable staff. Every oyster is shucked by Shawn with care prior to serving. I was going to be selfish and not praise this wonderful place (cause it's hard enough getting a seat today as it is) but it deserves to be praised.

It doesn't get any better. The owner is there every day quality checking every single thing. The servers are all absolutely wonderful, they know what they're talking about and they're off the charts friendly. I come in from langley EVERY chance i get because... Well... YUM. It's decor is awesome. Homey and cozy but clean and tidy. Plating is great. Soup is great. Oyster selection is KILLER and freshness is beyond compare to anywhere I've ever been. Fried oysters also amazing. Mussels are amazing. I have yet to try the grilled cheese... I sound like an Oyster groupie so im gonna stop now. -religious and exclusive Oyster eXpress lover

Thank you Shawn for the superb service and fresh oysters. Visited twice with family and friends within 2 days and both days were very satisfying. Will be back when visit Vancouver again!

I really enjoy fresh shucked oysters. They’re not something I eat every day, to be sure, but they’re nice to have as a treat every now and then. You might remember when I last wrote about the “buck a shuck” special at the now-closed Merchant’s Oyster Bar on Commercial Drive. Today, we’re heading over to Chinatown for Oyster Express. And yes, I realize how odd that sentence may sound.

Dined here for a friend's birthday during "Happy Hour." We ordered a dozen BC oysters, 6 New Zealand specials and 6 Japanese variety. The oysters were delicious. Prawn cocktail was okay. Friend ordered mussels in a butter based sauce and he enjoyed his dish. Their son ordered chickens wings and fries.

The food and the oyster selection and quality are the best I've had. There is always something unique for oysters, and the mussles arr fantastic. Service is great with knowledgeable staff, courteous owners and a very cool vibe, food and drinks are prepared with love and it shows. Recommend calling ahead during peak hours.<br/>This gem is a cozy retreat that I will retweet and re-treat myself to again and again.<br/>

Oyster Express sits on the corner of Gore and Keefer in Vancouver’s Chinatown. It is very small and easy to miss given the minimal signage. It has seats for about 30 but, maximum capacity, it would be rather close. It is quite plain and understated in décor, but is functional and comfortable. The staff is very enthusiastic and friendly and the whole atmosphere is welcoming. The menu matches the size of the place and, aside from the raw oysters, which are listed separately according to availability, there are only 12 items. You can get steamed or fried oysters, mussels, two types of clam chowder and, should you wish it, a grilled cheese sandwich, along with a good variety of cocktails and some 23 wines. On this occasion, I came just for the oysters… [

A cozy little place with delicious oysters! Although the oysters were the sweet star of the show, the side dishes (fries, clam chowder, & steamed mussels) were also quite satisfying. <br/><br/>5 stars for fresh food! 5 stars for the attentive waitress - especially since it was super busy!
Every Day Is A Food Day
The oysters on sale for the day during their happy hour were Glacier Bay oysters. They were $1.50 each. Their Kusshi oysters were also on sale that day for $2.50 so we got some of those. The Glacier Bay oysters were rather tiny but still sweet. However, we enjoyed the Kusshis a lot more. Much bigger and plump and very fresh. For the most part, the shucking was pretty good, but we still had a little bit of shell in some oysters.

I know, I know, who would've thought seafood and Chinatown?! Not the best oysters in town, but definitely a hip and cool new addition to the neighborhood. Happy hour is recommended, go for the oysters really because the rest of the food is just okay.

Very comfortable neighbourhood spot. Friends I have mentioned it have been hesitant, but those trepidations are unfounded. Fresh, clean and delicious.

So finally went here for a late dinner, and heard good reviews from 2 of my friends, got to be something. <br/><br/>all the oysters are seasonal, i tried kushi and jervis' oysters and paired with white wine. <br/><br/>first time slurping an oyster fresh, i had oysters before but it was motoyaki type, so the flavor is all overwhelmed by the batter and butter on top. while this one is fresh, and with a mix of tabasco, lemon and their own vineggar spice, the flavour of the oyster is really brought up in a nice way. <br/><br/>the lemon deaffened the taste of seafood/raw for most and the tabasco somewhat opens up the depth flavor of the oyster and their vinnegar like spice is more like a dipping sauce that compliments the depth flavor. it's all very good.<br/><br/>definitely a good first try, but i have no comparison in terms of oyster. do i like it? yes, am i able to know what's a good oyster? not really yet. for the taste i'll say it's good but the price is on the pricier side as well, but for fresh oysters i think it's still worth it, the comparison will be where in other places will be to get fresh oyster

What a cute restaurant! It's a small place located on the corner unit so it's super easy to spot! The staff are very welcoming and friendly. Deliciously wide selection of oysters to pick from and served fresh!! Fresh horse radish as well. Great sauces for you to pick and add to your oyster. Seriously, freshest oysters I've had!

Got there around 8pm on a saturday with a party of 5, and for such as small place we got a table right away. We got a great description of all the oysters on the menu, and missing happy hour, most variates were around 3-3.50 each, with the daily special at 1.95. The oysters were fantastic, with my favourites being the Raspberry Point from PEI and the Kaipara's from NZ. Apart from lemon wedges and freshly shaved horseradish and tobasco the oysters were accompanied by 3 condiments; a chilli vinegar, a delicious seafood sauce, and a spicy pepper vodka. We also split the mussels and candied salmon which were both excellent as well. The service fast fast and attentive, and all in all was a great experience.

Some of the best service I've had anywhere - and the food goes without saying. The service here is impeccable having an almost impossible mix of classy, friendly, and un-pretentious. The servers are happy to explain every oyster on the menu and if you have really technical questions the chef will stop by and explain the "why". I grew up eating fried oysters and there was always a bitter component that was rather gross, the fried oysters here have always been beyond delicious - not sure how they do it but it is greatness. I crave going back to this place every week.

Came here for happy hour oysters for $1.50 each. My favourite kushi was also on special for less than $3 each. They were all very fresh! The England chowder was also very fresh tasting and not overly rich or salty. Will be back!

Highly recommended!!!. Enviroment is good for chilling. Food is surprisely good, fresh and reasonable price. Service is excellent. Will go back for sure.

Oysters, Oysters, Oysters. I had the deep fried oysters (wasn't in the mood for raw) and they were absolutely fantastic. They were crispy, juicy, had some spice in the coating, and were HUGE. The service was stellar. The server was super nice and was so patient when I screwed up paying with my credit card on the machine.
Cheese Me Please
Pretty good but you have to wait. The oysters here are pretty good, however, you have to wait a looooooonnnggg time to get them. Came in one night with a group of 4. We made a rather large order and waited probably close to 50 minutes until they came out. During those 50 minutes, we decided to order more since we figured it would take equally as long should we want more. The waiter informed us that the price per oyster was now more. It was a little strange considering we didn't go in during happy hour and were ordering off the regular menu. <br/><br/>Like the review below, I didn't quite "see" the fine print that the larger your order gets the higher the price of the oyster gets. Oh well.

Happy Happy Hour. Loving it with its happy hour and easy to park location, service is very good too. Tuesday all night is with happy hour price.

Went in for a buck a shuck, ordered 3 dozen for the 3 of us and it was good. When trying to order another 3, the price goes up to $1.50. Not sure where it's written but can't seem to locate the "fine print". Friendly service, good Caesar and an unexpected neighborhood. May stick with Joe Forte's though as there are no limits and the appies tastier.

Incredibly slow service. Wai.... Incredibly slow service. Order took more than 50 minutes to arrive. When complained to the server about it, he said "Well, it's happy hour." He did not sound apologetic at all. Very disappointed. Will not be returning.

Total Miss. I went today (June 19) at around 5:20 to take advantage of the happy hour buck a shuck. Sure, the server was nice, I got a seat quick and ordered right away (it wasn't too busy), but I never got to eat a oyster. Why? Because after 45 minutes of waiting, I just got up and left. I wasn't the only party who did so - the server said that the oysters were coming, and yes, there was a wait, but I didn't expect it to be an hour wait. When I flagged him down to ask about it, he replied that my oysters weren't even being shucked yet! I didn't even get to eat anything in the end... Had such high hopes, I'm super unimpressed.

Came here for happy hour and ordered a dozen oysters and the steamed mussels. The oysters were extremely fresh and tasty and the mussels were delicious, as well. It was our first time there, and we were so impressed. The quality of the oysters were better than Rodney's. The staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Definitely making this place our new go to spot for oysters and recommending it to everyone!

Loved it!. We in for Buck o Shuck -- soooo gooood!!! Limit 12 per person. Their homemade teas are very special as well :) The curry did taste like Glico or some other Japanese curry mix though. The staff was very friendly.<br/>We need more places like this in Vancouver. This restaurant is one of the many places in this area that are truly gentrifying the neighbourhood. I wish they would open late and have Buck o Shuck after 9, so I could go all the time!!!

Went in for the Buck A Schuck. I'm a fresh oyster first timer...so I was a little apprehensive, but now I'm hooked. For a buck a piece they were decent sized oysters! Watch out the place is small and gets extremely busy during Happy Hour, wait times to order can get long! Had the tomato based chowder, it wasn't anything special, prefer my chowder in cream base.

Ordered 6 oysters of the day and a pound of mussels. Very fresh, next time will just order oysters to try other varieties, there were 10 to choose from ($2.25-3.5) besides the $1.50 oyster of the day. Didn't expect it to be in chinatown, small place.

The buck a shuck happy hour is a good deal--4-6 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and maximum of six per person though. The food, however, was another matter. The Jamaican curry wasn't anything special and tasted like a mix--Glico curry but with pepper added. The mussels were big but tasted ordinary. The broth didn't taste like there was any wine in it. The accompanying toast was the kind bread you'd get at Safeway--mass produced and from a plastic bag. Quite frankly, we were very disappointed. I'd go back for oysters but I'd eat my dinner elsewhere. No beer or wine on the menu yet. Quite a limited menu.

Warm friendly vibe to new oyster bar in town. After spending a few weeks walking past the renovations, I couldn't wait to get inside and see what it was all about. Being new to this particular shell fish I was a little on the nervous side, however the presentation alone was enough to make me order three more before my plate had even hit the table. I can now say with confidence - I am hooked. I will definitely be back to this warm, inviting establishment and I will be spreading the word to everyone I know. If you are an oyster lover, be sure to check this place out!

A few hits and misses on my part, but would try again!. First review. Haven't tried raw oysters before, and was rather interested in doing so when seeing that this place had just opened. The corner location is very prominent and used to be a mom-and-pop store that moved a block or so down. Extensive renovations were done to accomodate the restaurant and its rustic and antique inspired decor with a modern twist. As I went by myself on Thursday at 4:30 PM I was able to get two Summer Breeze oysters for a buck a shuck, and also ordered a oyster stew as a little filler. The chef was nice in giving me and a few other patrons an intro to the oysters that were served. The raw oysters were decent if it weren't for the horseradish/wasabi I inadvertently put on top (yes I dislike that). Can't remember the sauce that accompanied them but it tasted pretty good; sadly I didn't put more on the oysters (next time though!). As for the oyster stew, it took some time to arrive (no problem for me though) given that it was said to be made in-house and there is only one chef doing everything. It also wasn't quite what I had in mind. The chef likened it to a chowder, but it had a more runny texture and was less filling than what I normally associate with either a stew or chowder. That aside, it did still have 5 whole decently sized oysters within, and they did give a few extra crackers. For $9, it may be a tad high, but given that I had just eaten brunch a few hours earlier, it served as a good top-up filler. All in all the total was $12.32, which was handwritten as the new-ish cash register was giving a load of noisy errors to both the waitress and the chef when they tried to press some buttons. Overall, the service was very friendly, the chef knows what he's talking about, and the decor was pretty unique. The atmosphere was also welcoming and slow, although one can assume that that may change once this place gets busier given the "express" in the name. Although the price is a little on the high side, I wouldn't mind giving this place a second try given the various hits and misses on my part for my first meal.

Oyster Express is a little hidden gem located at the edge of Chinatown. After 2 dozens of fresh, creamy, and delicious Denman Island oysters, we were quite content and happy. Instead of trying other oysters on the menu, we decided to give the local scallop ($5.50/each) a try. Each scallop was served raw on a beautiful shell, and was a little smaller than I expected. It was not amazing but tasted very fresh.

... very cheesy but would have liked a stronger cheese flavor eg. blue or something equally forte; tomato and mushrooms a nice touch; bread was toasted well, lightly crisp on the exterior and soft in the center...

Their oysters are always gorgeous and perfect, no matter what their daily special is. At $1/oyster, it’s one of the best tasting and best deals in the city. I also love the casual caf

I would normally never go to it because I'm really not into oysters. I just don't have a particular appreciation for the various types and slurping it down with Tabasco or what not. So, of our party of four, only one person had the oysters. He's big on oysters, and was happy enough to make a second order of a half-dozen, so that's a good sign.

Anyways, back to the new restaurant that opened up last year… they had me at the name… Oyster Express.  I love me some oysters! Oyster Express is operated by  ex-Rodney’s Oyster House  shucker, Sean Chesney

After hearing Oyster Express has buck a shuck, my coworkers and I decided to come here after work. Its quite close to our office, so we just had to see how it compares to the other buck a shuck options in town. Oyster Express is located on Keefer and Gore. It’s a little hidden. The restaurant is a bit small, so it’s a bit hard to fit several large groups. The restaurant doesn’t have air conditioning, so the interior is very very hot. We came during one of the hottest weeks of the summer and it was a bit painful dining here, so we definitely needed to grab some cold drinks. I got the Philips Lager ($5), it was pretty good lager. Light and crisp. The buck a shuck oysters that were servered were fanny bay oysters. For $1, the size was great and the shucking was done superb. The oysters were mighty fresh as well. Your first dozen is $1, but after that, it’s $1.50 per oyster. Thats the downside of the buck-a-shuck here. You have a few sauces to dress up your oysters with - red wine mignonet

BFF recently informed me of this little place in Chinatown that has Buck-a-Shuck happy hour…and get this…it REALLY is a buck for a shuck!!!  Not $1.75, not $1.50, just $1!!!  When I heard of this, I quickly scurried Hitman to the magical Oyster eXpress with me. This corner restaurant has a very rustic log house interior…the birch color scheme a la Ikea is very pleasing to the eyes and brings a warmth…especially on a night like tonight when it was a huge downpour. Their Buck-a-Shuck deal is only during Happy Hour Tuesdays to Fridays from 3pm-6pm.  We arrived at around 5:15pm and were the only ones here on a Tuesday night.  A few more patrons came in afterwards though. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately.  Then we were informed of the happy hour (which we already knew about).  The buck-a-shuck oysters of the day were the Summer Breezes…small but meaty, and from just north of Fanny Bay.  Once Hitman heard of that he got intrigued and fired of
