Review Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant - Vancouver

W Lyons
Visited for dinner with a party of 5. The staff were very attentive. We ordered the sweet and sour pork, beef, mixed seafood chow mein, and shrimp and pork fried rice. It wasn't my favourite Chinese food spot, but the fried rice was really good. Overall, it was really pricey for the amount of food we ordered. The dim sum is probably better!

Great Dungeness crab!!!šŸ˜ It was 3lb and the price was $27 per pound(probably it varies everyday). Before cooking, the staff showed me the live crab to confirm if it is the right size for me. I was happy to see the fresh crab and it took about 25mins to cook. While waiting, we ordered seafood fried rice and soup dumpling. For some reason, we could not find pricing in the menu. šŸ¤”But we just ordered. Seafood fried rice turned out to be the best choice ever. The amount of seafood is so generous, and I loved the fish roe topped on the fried rice. The portion of the fried rice was also satisfying(good for 3people). Soup dumpling was disappointing compared to the one at Dynasty. Dumpling was already damaged before we ate. šŸ˜”So we could not enjoy the soup in them. However, when the crab was served, we forgot about the dumplings. The crab was deep-fried and it was full of crab meat. The crispy toppings on the crab was great. It did not ruin the natural crab flavor. I mixed the crispy toppings with the seafood fried rice. It became more enjoyable. After the satisfying meal, we ordered Mango pudding that is shaped as a wholesome corn. Even when it was served, I doubted if it was really Mango pudding, and after a bite, I was like "How clever!"ā˜ŗļøā˜ŗļø It was a real pudding and real Mango pieces were in them. And the milky sauce came with Mango pudding was also good. From now on, this place will be my spacial go-to restaurant !! I will come back with my loving ones ~šŸ˜Š

Every one of the dim sum items we ordered were very tasty. We only had a few plates, so I havenā€™t that much to go on. Service was good and thereā€™s parking underground.

Dim sum is expensive, but dinner is very reasonable. The food is tasty, there is a small parking lot downstairs, if you are early, otherwise, street parking.

This always had been (and still is) my ā€˜go toā€™ favourite dim sum place to take out of town guests and friends. They have really stepped it up since Covid and are top notch when making sure customers stay safe. They check for ID & proof of vaccine. In addition, thereā€™s a thermometer to check your handā€™s temperature. Not sure how that works. There are many pros to this place: - Good quality and fresh food (the 4 of us pigged out on 16 dim sum dishes!). Group favourite was the crab claws and eggplant. - Tables are socially distanced from other tables - Good ambiance - Service is prompt - Complimentary parking is located downstairs with elevators taking you directly upstairs - Reservations are available Note: the corn on the cob photo is actually mango dessert! Delish! Definitely come here if you enjoy dim sum and/or want a great experience. You will be impressed!

First time at Sun Sui Wah, and it was a good experience. Everything tasted very good except the taro squares. Service was good and everything was clean and neat.

We had a great experience here! Mistakenly, we didnā€™t make a reservation but they managed to squeeze us in! Because it is seafood specialized we opted to get a lot of shrimp dishes which were so delicious. Another favourite was the BBQ pork buns. We would come back!

Food, while certainly not bad, hasn't been as good as it was in the past. That 's not a diss at this place... Just an observation. It still is quite busy and they serve up most of the classic dim sum dishes that you'd expect.

The seafood was delicious. Reaaaaally delicious. And the service was excellent. Prices a tad higher than I'm used to though and unfortunately the sweet and sour chicken wasn't amazing.

The foods was good but the service was bad. Very typical of Chinese restaurant.

Enjoyed fantastic dim sum. Courteous, quick service and nice atmosphere.

My friends and I have a standing monthly date to come here ....... Excellent food...great service...it's busy especially on Sunday for 11am so reserve... you will not be disappointed!!!

Never coming here again. Food's ok, nothing special. Tried to make a reservation and I get no reservation policies, but to tell a customer that yes they take a reservations, but for the time that I want I still have to wait or better yet, if I came 2 hours before my reservation I would definitely get a table is moronic.

Like being in Hong Kong. Great food, great service.

Seafood. Roast Squab all very nice. Price mid to high great value for money.

Once you sit down, they will bring a hot tea and will charge automatically!! Beware about that! They do lunch til 3:00pm but once clock passes 2:00pm they are trying to rush to clean the table and want u to leave asap! You can find lot better dim sum restaurant everywhere in vancouver. This place is just one of them... Nothing special. Their review on the yelp is not quite accurate...

Hands down my favourite dim sum in Vancouver. Which is saying a lot...

Food is good and services is good too! The Peking duck is one of my favourite and "dim sum" is delicious!

I do not support shark fin soup!!

Animal cruelty to the max. FUCK this place.

If you grew up in Vancouver and you are Chinese, chances are, youā€™ve been to Sun Sui Wah for a wedding/baby celebration/any celebration etc. Soya sauce chicken: We werenā€™t planning on ordering this, but the waitress recommended it and said it was one of their best dishes. Well, she was right and we all enjoyed it! The chicken was well marinated, very tender and juicy.

4.3. Definitely one of the, if not top Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. We have been here for both dim sum and dinner, and found both excellent. Service is always top notch. You are paying for quality here, so be prepared to spend! Also, get here early if you can because it is always busy.

I honestly forgot to take photos of the food until dessert (tapioca pudding with red bean, which looks gross but donā€™t let appearances deceive you). C&J kept me liquored up all the way through, and I was kept busy with eating and conversation. There were the usual dishes of lobster, chicken, fish, at a Chinese full course meal. C&J added on sweet and sour pork as one of the dishes, which was unusual because it had lychee added into it. In my drunken haze, I remember that the chicken skin was very crispy, and the fried rice and yi mein was not too oily.

Very slow service / had to ask for 1 thing several times from different people
Decent food/ nothing memorable
Family friendly
Convenient underground parking available
Average price
I've been here for both dim sum and dinner and they're just mediocre
If i had to choose 1 dish : durian pancake wrap (dessert)
Would I go back ? Maybe in a blue moon

I remember a time when this place was at the top of its game for Chinese fine dining. Dim sum draws a crowd here, but dinner over the last few years just wasn't satisfying. The service has dropped alot too.

This place is known for large banquets for weddings.
For the price you pay, it's really difficult. If the food was good years ago, I'd be happy to pay for quality. I still think western lake is winning. Lowers prices with a higher quality in food and service.

I came here for a wedding dinner reception. The food was really bland. Seafood is fresh but missing a touch of seasoning. Overall food is alright but I'm missing the "satisfaction," if I'm going to pay premium prices.
Had a gatherings Ā - a total of 4 people on a busy Saturday afternoon. Ā We ordered many dims sums such as : Prawn Dumplings, Pork Shrimp Shiu Mai, Beef Ten Tripe, Squid & Pig Skin (just a few small pieces of pig skin - a bit disappointed for this one), Pan Fried Sticky Rice (very good), Pan Fried Rice Rolls w. Soya Sauce (very good), Thousand Layer Sweet Cake (good). Ā Most of the dim sums were above average.

We order a plate of Buddha's Fried Noodles - this one was not good. Ā The noodles were too hard & not tasty, though lots of Siu Tong Veggies but just a few Buddha's veggies.

Overall comments Ā : Ā good and clean place with high ceilings, services were attentive; food was above average. Ā A good Dim Sum Restaurant to go if you do not want to drive to Richmond.

Had a good time where, servers were patient and friendly and accommodated for my vegetarian family. Food was good too, but had to wait for a table even though we made resos early.

Sun Sui Wah and Kirin serve the best dim sum outside of Richmond. All the dishes we got were very fresh and delicious. The shrimp spring rolls were definitely the highlight of our meal.

When the to this Chinese restaurant on weekend afternoon, it was busy, had reservations, short wait, got a seat, ordered rice flour rolls, steam pea leafs, spear ribs, lotus leaf wrap, steam bun, mango wrap dessert, all were good, the total came to $75, this place is good but pricey, recommended for special occasions.

Something about cold winter days and dim sum. I prefer Kirin over anything else in downtown, but that place without a reservation will most likely put youĀ atĀ 45 minutes wait. Ummm no thanks. The trick is to call ahead of time to reserve a table, I just always forget. Dimsum at Sun Sui Wah is pretty decent, we actually ordered three more dishes but I forgot to snap some photos, I was already enduring a food coma at that point. The restaurant is moderately large which is good for accommodating bigger groups. The service is good & fast. The quality is up to par with other dim sums in the area. I frequently dine here for family dinners, I don't find anything that special here besides the fact I don't have to wait for a table! Our meal was around $60-70, pretty standard for a higher-end Chinese restaurant.
Amanda Pang
They have a lot to choose from, and there are a surprising number of vegetarian options. The place also has a giant TV, which is pretty nice entertainment while you enjoy your food. I though the food was too oily, but a lot of Asian places tend to be quite oily. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Anyone who would look for dim sum in Vancouver knew where to get it at: right here. Sadly though, things have changed and not for the better. The service seems to have gone downhill, last time we went we were completely ignored and they were slow in changing the plates. Loved coming here esp when guests came from out of town but it seems the chef has been changed?

Sun Sui Wah is a solid Chinese restaurant featuring traditional banquet style Cantonese cuisine. And while there were few outright surprising dishes, what was offered was cooked perfectly and in a fashion that does Chinese food proud. An easy recommendation for anyone in the area.

The taste was okay but not the best. Not really worth it, and not worth it at all for what you have to pay. Also I went home and had a nasty dump and lots of farts after. Definitely wouldnt go again. Quality has definitely dropped over the years

The Food tasted good, good sized portions enough to share for at least 4 people. Food wasn't oily which I liked. Would go back again for dinner there.

Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant is a long standing, well regarded Chinese dining spot, although other reviewers have indicated that its best days may be over and that there are better (and cheaper) places to eat in Vancouver.Ā It features dim sum, but also has a wide variety of traditional Chinese dishes.Ā This is a dominantly Cantonese restaurant, my least favorite style of Chinese cooking (more on that later). Ā

My wife and I went there for lunch with a friend and four of her relatives.Ā We had quite a few dishes:Ā Alaskan King Crab, Daikon Cakes, Duran Sticky Rice Balls, Eggplant with Stuffed Shrimp Paste, Fried Tofu, Hot and Sour Soup, Sesame Rolls, Short Ribs with Black Pepper Sauce, Shrimp and Chive Dumplings, Spicy Garlic Pork, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, Thousand Layer Cake with Egg Yolk, Steamed Prawn Rice Rolls, Fish Fillet Congee, Tripe with Ginger and Green Onion, SautĆ©ed Bitter Melon with Black Bean Sauce and Chicken Feet.Ā I thought everything, with the exception of the bitter melon, was quite good.Ā Others seemed to share my opinion of the bitter melon dish, since it was the only one not finished off.Ā Even the tripe was okay, and I donā€™t like tripe.Ā However, I found the overall dining experience to be somewhat less satisfying than I had hoped for.Ā Most of the food was somewhat bland.Ā Even the Spicy Garlic Pork had no kick to it.Ā Admittedly, I am a chile head and much prefer Sichuan cooking to the Cantonese fare we had here.Ā Having said that, this restaurant does serve up good food.Ā If spice is not your thing this is easily better than any Chinese place within 30 miles of my home city of Bellingham, Washington.

Overall service & quality have taken a nose-dive.Ā We booked 1130am but I had to fight for a seating at Noon.Ā Other angry customers were very confrontational, bad feng shui!Ā Then, of all dim sum items, their once-famous har gow (shrimp dumpling) was sour/spoiled, and we (for the first time ever) had to reject the order.Ā For their prices, the food is mediocre at best.Ā Table service was good - the server did not fuss when we rejected the har gow.Ā I used to bring my special guests here for a nice chinese meal, but not ever again!Ā Even for non-special occasions, I don't ever plan to come back.Ā You have been warned!

We eat a lot of Chinese food and I can definitely say that this is one of the best restaurants I've been to in awhile. The Peking duck was crispy and the lobster was fresh. I also tried king crab for the first time and it was amazing! Service was friendly and attentive.

The san choi bao (above) was standard but delicious. The hot and sour seafood soup was good rendition. Nice fresh seafood, nice balance of hot and sour without going overboard and becoming gloopy. The sweet and sour pork with lychees was damn tasty and Iā€™

Over-rated. We went with a reservation at 6 PM. We placed order of their famous pigeon but was told that it was not available. However, 1/2 hour later, we found that table next to us was having it. We asked the waiter, he said it needed to be pre-order. Isn't it shameful not to have what they are famous for right at the start of the dining time?
We order a typical Chicken Hot Pot which should be chicken in pcs with skin and bone but they only use slices of chicken meat. This is not what the Chinese Gourmet Chicken Hot Pot that we all recognized.
Service is good althoguh the waiter seems not too honest on the availability of pigeon.
Other food that we order is only in fair quality.

Correct. I have given Sun Sui Wah a 5. This may seem outrageous, but it is the best dim sum I have had in the city. I have eaten at most of the dim sum places in Vancouver, and while many have merit, Sun Sui Wah is consistently the best. Their food is great ā€“ everything from their springrolls (which will change your world) to the prawn rice roll (which I often find to be fishy, not here). The ambiance is great too, and even though it is a bit more expensive, I love how clean and fancy it is for somewhere I consider to be a casual dine. The staff are always friendly and tentative.

Our go-to dim-sum for many years. Apparently changed hands. Sticky rice filled with bland hamburger (no sausage or chicken); what used to be delicate little chive dumplings now big bland heavy lumps; some of our favourite items taken off menu. To compensate for the plummeting quality, the prices have gone up. So sad
Mikee
Disappointed. This is our usual go-to place. Heard they changed hands, and thought we'd check it out. Food was not to their usual standards, and although the wait staff has not changed their focus was on getting people out as opposed to service.

Food and service was not worth the price.

Very disappointed.

New owners?. Must be a under new management. Food took forever despite it being fairly quiet, servers never got the orders right. Their menu with pictures of what you can order doesn't match up with the fill-in menu item chart. The new food is inconsistent, bland and unfilling. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone anymore.
Dece
Real Talk. Dim sum tasted bland. Not a single dish stood out. The server loves to up-sell the squab for lunch. Realized it was leftovers from the night before because it was fried twice. Zero crisp to it what-so-ever but it sure looked deep fried. Unbelievable. Their Ham Sui Gok (Deep Fried Footballs) was just drenched in oil and it was unbearably soggy, nobody at the table could even eat it. As far as breakfast/lunch is concerned, I will NEVER come back again.

Rude services. When I called to make a reservation, the lady on the phone was super rude and literally yelling at me. The food is ok but the wait is always terrible. They need to hire better hostesses because if I am paying that price I would rather go to Kirin or Floata
Cindy Kwok
WORST SERVICE EVER. Ordered 7 dishes and our first 3 dishes came one at a time over 1 hour. Even before we sat down the servers were bad. Rushing us to order and slamming our dishes down and leaving. We ended up getting our cheque and leaving before our 3 other dishes came. To get back at us, they charged us extra for a soup we didn't order. $26 for watery soup that clearly wasn't what we order. I would strongly advise people NOT to come here.

Shark fin shame. We went to Sun Sui Wah last night and were met by protesters as well. I was shocked and appalled to hear that they do serve shark fin soup. I have eaten at Sun Sui Wah many times before and I had no idea, but we did not go in last night. I will not eat at a restaurant that is serving shark fin soup anymore than I would eat at a restaurant serving panda or tiger, sharks are THAT endangered. I like what the protesters were doing, anyone who actually cares would have turned away just like I did, so if your meal was ruined by people making noise I think you deserve it for giving them your money. As of last night, I have joined the boycott of Sun Sui Wah.
Mochiness
Say No to Shark Fin Soup, Awkward Waiters, and Bitter Atmosphere. I have only ever been to Sun Sui Wah once before my trip yesterday, and it was for a company Xmas dinner which was enjoyable. When my friends decided to come here for our one-month-late CNY dinner, I was highly anticipating our next get-together.

It started off awfully strange. Along the way to the restaurant with two of my friends, another friend texted me to let me know that he was already there, and to "beware the shark fin soup protestors". I was unaware that Sun Sui Wah offered shark fin soup, and I did not know whether he was joking or not. Lo and behold, he was right. As I neared the restaurant, there was a small group of shark fin soup protestors outside the doors holding signs and eliciting honking from passing cars. Alarmed and slightly embarrassed, we tried to sneak into the restaurant. We were caught, and they immediately shouted at us to avoid the restaurant, and if we do have dinner there, to tell management to take shark fin soup out of the menu. Slightly jarred by the confrontation, we said that we weren't planning on eating the soup. Again, they told us to tell them to take it off the menu. Hesitantly, we agreed.

Inside the restaurant, the experience changed, but not for the better. The four of us arrived earlier than the rest (six people in all) and decided to order first. We first ordered three dishes: jellyfish appetizer platter, scallop and squid with vegetables, and duck with Buddha fungus (something along those lines). The waiter was surprised and asked if that was all we were ordering. We told him that we would order more later. He said that we had to order it all now to put everything on the bill. In disbelief, we consulted and added one more dish: rice with diced chicken and salted fish. His shocked reaction was very off-putting. "You like salted fish?!". I gave him a suspicious look as I asked him if he had anything else to say about the dish. He said no and took off.

At that time, we were already feeling pretty uncomfortable. The food came and didn't help much. The jellyfish was bland, and there were uneven portions of cold meat and bean curd. The scallop and squid with vegetables seemed like a regular starchy dish that can be cooked at home. The rice was ok too, but the fish tasted a bit too salty. The duck pot with fungus was unimpressive with tiny bits of duck some people did not notice. As we were eating, the same waiter came around and asked if we liked the dish, particularly the fungus. It seemed like it was hard to believe that we did. Not only that, but after we finished eating, he asked if we wanted to order anything else. What the?

I hypothesized why the waiter was acting strangely. 1) The protestors outside fouled the staff's mood. During our meal, they would get so loud sometimes that I think sometimes they opened the lobby doors to screech at us. 2) We were all young adults, 23-year-olds, compared to the other diners who came with their family or in their 40s. 3) None of the dishes we ordered were outrageously expensive, and we did not try their famous squabs.

Antsy, we all wanted to leave as soon as possible. Before we left, we were all given red bean soup, which had a hint of bitterness that humourously reflected the restaurant's atmosphere that day. Needless to say, I would not come back here again for the awkward service and mediocre food. And to shark fin soup protestors, shame on you. There are so many other less-disruptive ways to portray your message. As much as we disliked the restaurant experience, we did not tell them to take the dish off the menu in person. I will do it my way.

I only ever go for dim sum. Have not tried their dinner menu yet. Tips for avoiding a line up: get there before 11:30 and you will not have to wait for a table! Dim sum is good, not the best, but for some reason I still keep coming back! The servers and staff are friendly and professional. I have been lucky enough to get the small room everytime. It is much more comfortable than being in the main dining area with 300 other people. Would I recommend it? Yes, but be prepared to pay a little more than most dim sum places in Vancouver
Samuel
Dim sum and dinner. I went there many times with my family and the food is just crap compared to other Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. with the amount of money you spend at this restaurant you could get better food for the same price or cheaper.

Worst Chinese Food at Xmas Party. Our group of about 40 attended a dinner at Sun Sui Wah Dec 2012.
We were given an eleven course meal. First came the Hot and Sour Soup which was okay. Next the Lettuce wrap - okay. Cream Crab decent. Peppered beef which may have has 2 ounces of thinly sliced beef and lots of green and red peppers - very small dish poorly done. A chicken dish comprising of maybe a half a breast of chicken but lots of celery and onions - also small dish and tasteless. Sweet and Sour Pork - also a small dish and the pork was mainly grisle - yuk! Pan Fried Buck Choy with garlic - small dish but okay. Fried Green beans with pork - soft and soggy beans - yuk! Fried Rice - Bland tasting. Fried noodles which was made with cheap egg noodles (probably $1.49 a pack at local chinese stores) stir fried with soy sauce and sprinkled with Sesame seeds - didn't even touch it. Tapioca was the dessert which was decent.
I can say that at $40 per person for the food, it was a total ripoff. The reputation that this restaurant has for its food was certainly not evident when we were there and I and many of my friends will never return or recommend Sun Sui Wah - Main Street to anyone.

Service is okay. But food is delicious.

Worst Chinese Food!. Visiting Vancouver for a cousins wedding. Banquet was held here with a traditional 10 course chinese meal.
By far one of the worst chinese food I have tasted. Edmonton has better tasting chinese food and probably cheaper as well.
Was expecting more from this place since the chinese population is larger than Edmonton, but turns out it was bad.

This sun sui wah serves up decent dim sum...better than their other location in richmond. parking's a b*tch though.

Disappointed. Good:
-diverse menu with lot of fancier dishes
-decor was modern
-ingredients were super fresh
-good for groups
-underground parking

bad:
-waiting 45mins longer than our reservation time
-mediocre food. this was my first time here and i was surprised by this. friends who had been there before did mention that the food is normally very good but it seemed like they were having an off day. many dishes were not seasoned enough. 1 dish was way too salty.
-having a fairly large and very very loud wedding reception going on the same time we were there. 2/3 of the restaurant was blocked off by an ugly separator with peeling tape stuck on it. the volume level on their speakers was totally over the top. i think this wedding had a lot to do with our food not tasting so good with the more experienced chefs concentrating on the wedding party's food.
-service was attentive but hurried. soup and dessert were poured without due care so it was messy looking.
-a very tight parking lot overrun by pigeons. there is a lot of pigeon poop and a high likelihood your car will be pooped on

would i return?: yes
-since friends have claimed the food is normally very delicious, i would like to try this place again when there isn't a wedding going on.
-really want to try their dimsum

This place is horrid, we had to wait an unbelievable long time..... AFTER OUR RESERVATION TIME!! Absolutely ridiculous!!

Busy, is that a bad thing?. Good quick service once you're seated, sometimes a wait, regardless of reservations.., quality dim sum.

Reliably good.. I've been coming here for years with my family and each time, the food has ranged from good to excellent. Overall, I know that if I go there for dinner, I won't be going home with any complaints. There have been a few times when a dish came out overcooked, however, the staff never have a problem correcting any mistakes. The service is attentive and they always know when to provide new plates if the current one I'm using becomes dirty or too full of crab shells, etc.
Paprika
Too much going on.... I went here on a late Saturday afternoon with a party of 5 people. The wait wasn't too bad but they don't have a proper waiting area so everyone is just stuffed into one corner. When we finally were seated the waiter just threw us one menu and left and every time we passed the menu to each other he would come by and try to take the menu away. Was a little annoying. When we finally ordered the food took a long time to come and took a long time for our tea and water to arrive. The room was extremely cold, it was warmer outside. When our food finally arrived the place was so packed with people waiting that there were people standing around our table hovering over us as we ate. There were even people in the aisles of the dining area waiting to be seated just standing around watching everyone eat. This was extremely uncomfortable. The service was horrible, we had to stand up and wave someone over to get us our tea/water and to clear our plates because everything came one at a time with about 10 minutes in between. The food was decent but since it was so cold in the room everything cooled by the time it was ready to eat. There were about 3 things that we ordered that never came to our table. My favorite thing was the broccoli, short ribs, and the calamari. It took us forever to flag down someone for our check and even longer to check out. We spent a total of 2 1/2 hours trying to eat here. I will never return and if I do I will go during the week when they are not busy. The poor service and atmosphere made a damper on the food which should be the main focus.
Love Good Food
Great flavors. Was recommended by a friend.
New to Dim Sum but love it now.
I'm sure there are cheaper places to eat dim sum but not sure if there are better.
Highly recommended
Michaelr62
I liked the food and would go there again, we went on a Sunday and even though the place was full to cap we didn't have to wait more than 10 mins for seating

Fantastic.....perfectly cooked...met all of our expectations! We'll be back!
Jaymiesperry14
Tooo fast service. I ASKED THE SERVER TO SLOW DOWN ON BRINGING THE DISHES. In a matter of 30 minutes all the food was on our table getting cold before we could even attempt the 2nd dish. Possibly it was the language barrier, but he said ok and nodded his head.

Terrible Dim Sum. I was here last month with a bunch of friends for lunch. We chose this place because it was located at a central area of Vancouver. We have been here a couple of times, the previous times were ok, but this time it was just bad. The turnip cake we ordered was undercooked, and the soya sauce thick wrapped rice noodle tasted like flour. One of my friends asked for iced water, and there was a a small fly inside. The small egg tarts were cold when served and much of the things we ordered was below satisfaction. I will not come back to this place anymore for dim sum.

"B-food" ("B" for bland) not seafood. We don't eat Chinese food much because my wife is allergic to Bell peppers ("capsicum" in Australian parlance) and they're everywhere in Chinese cuisine. But a charitable organization (Little Mountain Neighbourhood House -- a worthy cause!) we favour was having a fund-raising dinner there. So we went, for the event as much as the food.

The eight items we had as part of the buffet weren't BAD; it's just that they were nothing special. Sun Sui Wah does shrimp well -- I enjoyed the shrimp balls, which had good prawny flavour and a nice rubbery mouth feel -- but the fish dishes were bland. Beef with onions was tasty, but it was beef! And onions! How could you go wrong? Overall, though, the food was typical under-seasoned Cantonese. Szechuan is more my style.

Other reviewers have slagged the service. I thought Sun Sui Wah's staff were quick and efficient on a night when there were 300+ diners at the banquet (plus more with private parties.) The main room is nice, large, some Asian touches in the decor but not kitschy over-the-top. This is a big-volume place.

Overall, it wasn't bad, but there was nothing distinctive enough about Sun Sui Wah that would make me come back.

Ignorant People. First they were rude and ignorant, I am white and they treated us like dirt. They got our order wrong. The food was okay but for the price no way. It is not worth going to trust me.
Jackal
Food & service is good. But they rush you out as soon as they can. So they can seat another group of people. We'll never go there for dinner again. Same thing happened a few weeks ago while having dinner with another family. 70 min for dinner that time. If they had said 2 hour limit for dinner we would of booked else where.

Always A Delight. Not only does Sun Sui Wah serve great dim sum, it's dinner menu is equally, if not more, delicious.

The dim sum quality is comparable to that of Hong Kong's, the quality and freshness is always delivered.

As for the dinner menu, the roasted pigeon and the Alaskan king crab dishes are their forte.

Whenever we have guests from out of town, my parents always, without fail, bring them to this delicious restaurant.

Unbelievable menu and fine service. Don't miss the hot and sour soup. Enjoy.

Dim sum yum. This restaurant provides a great selection of dim sum. You can get dim sum almost anywhere in the city, but Sun Sui Wah has something that makes it tastes just a bit better than most other places. The food does not seem as greasy and it seems to have a wonderful fresh selection.

King crab delight. Although this is a very expensive treat i recommend everyone trying the king crab at least once! It really is there specialty and is so delicious. They cook it three ways for you. One is with steaming it with some garlic. Next, the take some of the crab and deep fry it with some hot peppers. It was surprisingly not oily. And finally they do a curry seafood rice dish with the remaining crab. Here's a tip: Ask them to cook the first crab dish (the one with steaming it with garlic) and use the "juice" left over to mix it with noodles. It isn't on their menu but they will do it for you! It's so yummy. Another must try dish is their squab! Another speciality. Everything else is so exquisite too but does not stand out as much as these too dishes. Also come back in June for winter melon soup season!

Delicious -- worth the wait. First off -- you WILL wait to be seated here for Dim Sum. There is no way of avoiding it. Sometimes I've waited 30 minutes, sometimes more than an hour. Plan ahead.

That being said, once you are seated, the food is delicious and table service is prompt. This is by far my favorite place for Dim Sum.

Hyped, but not without it's merits.. No, it's not the best dim sum you can find in Vancouver, but it is by no means bad, and they do have some notable dishes (namely, the steamed and pan-fried shrimp and chives dumplings).
The atmosphere and service are commendable, and if you're not there for the single purpose of analyzing the foods, yea. You can have a great time.

Overhyped?. I feel bad about having voted "do not like" when the food was decent if not good; but the cold (temperature!) room, the lack of attention, the lukewarm dishes, and the haphazard delivery of items from the kitchen didn't justify the reputation this place has for being an amazing dim sum restaurant.

Dim sum experience. I really enjoyed the food at Sun Sui Wah, but the service was extremely slow. There were two points during the meal that we were ignored for at least 30 minutes. They also forgot to bring out one of our items entirely. The food was excellent, but I think I'll go back on a day when it's less busy.

Incredible Service / Average Dim Sum. First and foremost, the service was outstanding. No fewer than 7 persons attended to our little party. All with the most sincere attentiveness to my tables needs.

As like many locals and visitors who frequent Vancouver often, we hobby in sampling of dim sum from the endless number of options in Vanc and the surrounding areas. This location was selected due to it's history and reputation.

Of the 10 different dim sum items were ordered, two were sub-par. The remaining were at best... average. Considering the price point, this made the visit disappointing.

The best? Not really. It's okay, but really over rated. I don't know how it gets voted best in Vancouver.

Typical dim sum, a little oily. My favorite thing here is the mango pudding. It has real pieces of mango in it, so it's really really good. Everything else here is very typical dim sum stuff, tastes good, but very oily.

Service was acceptable. Restaurant was really busy (but it was a Sunday). There are some hits and misses for the dishes but the overall flavours were pretty good.

The food arrived quickly and was exactly as it should be. My favourite, the shrimp dumpling, came out of the bamboo steamer without tearing and had massive amounts of shrimp.

I enjoyed our visit, though I've been to other restaurants that are cheaper, have more variety or more daring menus this was a solid choice and I would return. And so would my mom.

For me dim sum has a special place in my heart. Ā I have fond memories of taking non-Chinese friends to freak them out over chicken feet, goose tongues, and snake soup. Ā

...a favourite for my family and family friends (more than Red Star ) for dim sum as well as dinner. I prefer dinner over dim sum because the service for dim sum is horrible at both locations, unless I am with my family or at least 8-10 people in a room. Gain Wah has been a favourite for years.

Excellent quick service, tasty food, dinner for two for less than 2 sandwiches from a fast food place. That's if you have the heart to venture to Chinatown at night!

1. They have so many people working there that no matter how busy it is, you will get a seat in less than 15 minutes.
2. The food always looks fresh and is delivered within minutes of ordering.
3. Sticky Rice comes in 3 small rolls as opposed to one huge roll, making sharing much less messy.

A landmark on Main Street, I have been visiting Sun Sui Wah for over a decade now. It is popular for sure and line ups are long on weekends (but they do take reservations).Ā Over the years, I have seen it change from dim sum carts to off menu dim sum and from being exclusively Asian clientele to a real mix. Given a wide variety of dim sum dishes, Sun Sui Wah is best experienced with a large group to taste more options. Their root vegetable cakes are a must. And the standards - sticky rice, shrimp dumplings, BBQ pork buns, etc. - are extremely well done. Gai lan, though, is greasy. As a group of five, I managed to experiment with some novelty items... ... be able to pass on some other novelty items... ... and try some desserts (taro cake - yum). Alaskan King Crab season seems to be getting shorter and shorter every year in Vancouver. I think Iā€™ve heard itā€™s because most of the catch winds up going to fuel the huge market in China.

The place was still pretty empty even though it was already 6pm. After an hour rolled by, the restaurant was pretty full! Quite promising on a tuesday night! =) Alright, looks like there was a real reason why Bao wanted to come to Sun Sui Wah, Alaskan King Crab !! lol! I'm not much of a seafood person, but I decided to be a sport and try it out. Bao swears this place makes it the best lol! I think it might be partially because he knows one of the waiters here. Service was impeccable! =) Here's the crab that was brought to our table. We ended up getting a smalle

Sun Sai Wah has a longstanding reputation with many accolades and reviews, etc. Love it or hate it, it's just dim sum people, and it's allll good. I went bonkers over the mango pancakes. Fresh mangoes and whipped cream bundled up in a light crepe. My heart rate just increased. The baked tapioca pudding requires advance notice because it takes time to make, but it's worth it. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like tapioca. It's red bean, tapioca custard, and a boa loa bow top crust. For those in the know, that would be my attempt at saying "pineapple bun". These Chinese buns ar

I love Dim Sum. It's the perfect way to gather a gang of good folk and sample a wide range of snack-sized plates. There is a catch, however. Much like grocery shopping, if you do it on an empty stomach, you may buy too much. With four empty stomachs, it's inevitable. Sun Sui Wah is amongst the vanguard of Vancouver Dim Sum restaurants. If not the best, it is certainly one of the most popular. On a Sunday afternoon the place is teeming with several hundred diners and a small army of servers. Upon entering the room I was stunned at the sheer size of it and the vast amount of people. Luckily, one of my friends keeps his head shaved so it wasn't a problem finding our table. Gotta say, so far that's the best reason for keeping a clean melon that I've come across. Along with a colorful, pictorial version, there is also a menu checklist. With no time given for pleasantries or excess chit-chat, the list was attacked with abandon. I got me some serious, very hungry foodies here. First up, one o

Reputation is a funny thing. Through various means, usually newspaper reviews, internet forums, or word of mouth, a certain establishment develops a particular reputation

There are many many Chinese restaurants that will serve Alaskan King Crab. You can easily get almost 2 dozen ads in the Chinese newspapers during the peak season. Each of them will try to outdo one another. Some by offering lower prices. Others by seeking different and novel ways of making it. It is bewildering exercise trying to decide which to go to.

The dim sum quality was top-notch and the price was much lower than we all expected. The only sad thing was that I couldnā€™t eat one of my favourites - wu kok - as they had run out!

This trip, we hit the Vancouver location of Sun Sui Wah so La Verne could compare it to the Richmond branch. According to La Verne, the Richmond location is clearly superior. That's not to say this visit wasn't without its highlights. Among them:
