Review Yamato Sushi - Vancouver

Tiffany Thornton
I recently moved to Vancouver and live right near Yamato sushi. I thought I would give them a try, however this is the third time ordering and so disappointing. I ordered the salmon Maki tonight and clearly it was rushed. The Maki rolls were all coming apart and the presentation was terrible. I think this is the last time for me ordering from Yamato. Vancouver is filled with great sushi spots ! I look forward to supporting others that take the time to deliver quality not rushed .

Nice, fresh sushi. Good value and portions. Our favourite is the spicy tuna roll. The miso soup was also nice. We like to grab sushi from here and enjoy at the park across the street. If you’re on Davie and feeling like sushi, it’s always a safe option to grab a quick bite from here. Service is quick and friendly. Thanks!

Ordered in person and not on an app which usually in other restaurants would be prioritized, been told it would take 20-30 minutes. A group of guy who ordered 5 minutes before us got their food in 15 minutes while we waited for over 45 minutes. And drivers kept picking up food for delivery. If I knew it would've taken that long I would've just gone somewhere else

This place, as of the time of writing, is takeout only. What I liked was how fresh everything was. The wait was not long and they kept to their stated time for pickup. Although, I can see how it can get super busy and stated times for pickup can be delayed even to the point of frustration. I don't expect sorry's or extra food when it has been delayed, even alot. That's fine. This is a grab and go place and all I care about is the food portions and quality at the end of the meal. Nothing else. The food is good quality. It is also big portions. This does not come without a cost. They have raised their prices and getting a good and big portioned orders here will add up on the bill so another expectation that it is not going to be the cheapest place for sushi. Overall, I would still recommend this place for any sushi-goer even if the communication may not be the best when putting in special requests or wanting to put in a complaint due to other factors. If this is a big concern, I would order through a third-party such as Doordash, Uber eats, etc. in order to get those concerns dealt with properly. Ordering over the phone will present risks but you'll save a few dollars I guess.

Currently take-out only. Prices are a bit higher than previous years, and the lower prices was one of their high points. Now they're actually a bit higher than most places nearby. Sushi's decent.

My friend Daniel and I have a little ritual where we order sushi from here every month or so. We’ve always been loyal customers (for years now). We’ve recommended Yamato to everyone. But tonight was just brutal. We spent over 100$. We ordered 2 pacific rolls (basically 40$) - we received only one roll instead and half of the roll wasn’t even cut. I have a terrible intolerance to spice so I asked (nicely two or three times in my order) to have the wasabi & ginger on the side. They did that thankfully but half way through my one roll I realized they had wasabi smushed into the roll which sent my taste buds to hell and back for 20 mins. We asked for no mushrooms or zucchini in our yakisoba (and apologized for being annoyingly picky) but zucchini was in it. Daniel just found a hair in his roll and what seems to be a fish bone (?) in his box salad as I’m writing this. Everything was just terrible - yakisoba is dry, the rolls I did receive (the ones not smothered in wasabi) tasted old, I don’t know what’s happened here if they switched owners or what..definitely never ordering again. Our orders have been consistently slightly messed up here every time but the food was so delicious we shrugged it off. This time was just too far though. If you have an allergy, if you have preferences - don’t order here. It feels like they were frustrated with my two requests and effed our order in spite.

Very last minute order. Very quick. Fresh sushi. Great food and delicious! Will definitely order again. Highly recommended.

This restaurant ignored my serious allergy after multiple attempts to bring it to their attention. I called ahead of my order informing them of my allergy and asked for safe options. Over the phone they were unhelpful, but I took what little information they gave me and went ahead with an order. On the order I made it very clear that I have a serious allergy. I asked for cross contamination to be avoided, and any gluten containing ingredients (I am celiac) to be removed. However when I took a bite from my food, it was battered (not stated on the menu). This will result in me being very sick for multiple days. I called them after to inform them of the issue, and the manager was very rude and failed to apologize. They refused any refund and hung up on me before coming to a solution.

My husband placed an order and was told that it would take 15 mins for pick up, so he waited around until then - then they said another 15 mins, then another 20 min until more than an hour later, still no food. A couple order a few roles and they got their order before he did. What kind of service is that? And they wouldn’t even give a refund since the order took more than an hour of waiting outside. Not only was the service extremely slow, but they also forgot to add a side order that he paid for. I had to go and pick it up. Rolls are big, but quality isn’t great - it’s the same as jako sushi, poor quality. I will never order from Yamato again. Don’t order here.

The absolute best sushi restaurant I've ever been to! I've been a regular for 5 years since moving to BC from Ontario. Their sushi is outstanding! Probably the biggest pieces I've ever seen for rolls with lots of fish, etc not only rice. Also, it's always super fresh because they are busy all the time but never to busy to get a table. The staff is incredible and I feel like family and like they are my family 😁. If you haven't tried, you're definitely missing out! Always will be my favorite place to eat period!

I used to really love this place. Treated it as a hidden gem: good prices & really good sushi. Lately though, its been mediocre sushi & the prices are way too exorbitant. :(

Strange smell from the kitchen.... people keep moving trash bins around (in and out) when we were eating. Totally weird place. Will never come back.
Aya
My sister and I came in for the 22 piece special along with an additional roll. Decor was beautiful, service was quick and didn't at all affect the quality of the sushi. Our waitress was attentive although there were other tables and it was quite busy. All in all, a pleasant experience, especially for a sushi place downtown.

Went there last week and ordered their sushi box. It was a decent portion. However nothing really stood out.<br/><br/>Will definitely go back to try more of the dishes.

I am from Calgary, the land of beef, and garbage fish, so my expectations were low to begin with and I knew Vancouver would blow me away sushi style. But this place. Guys. This place. It’s amazing! Get the real crab California roll. It was ridiculously good. And inexpensive!
SoftRockin' Revue
Finding just the right balance between affordable and tasty sushi is one of those ultimate struggles. This challenge is made even more difficult given the usually higher cost of eating out Downtown. While looking for a decently priced sushi joint to dine at after work, one of my friends recommended Yamato Sushi. Located close to the Canada Line and having quick turnover, things seemed to be off to a good start!
Moods
Great little find on Davie Street <br/>Small but busy <br/>Food was inexpensive but very tasty <br/>It's a good vibe reminded me of good experiences in little resteraunts in Tokyo.
Jay B
The rating is mainly due to what you get for the price. There are significantly better sushi spots in the downtown Vancouver area however they come at a higher price tag. For budget sushi that isn't questionable or inedible, this place delivers. The rolls aren't the neatest (i.e. some of my rolls broke easily, not the prettiest rolls) but they have the taste you expect. I found their soy sauce to be too salty and overpowering - unfortunately it didn't seem as though they had low sodium soy sauce available. The prices have raised from what zomato has posted under the menu pictures but still probably the lowest I've ever paid for decent sushi.
Amanda Beals
I really love this sushi place! It's always delicious and the service is always really great. The restaurant is very small so I don't generally sit down and eat but when I do, it's always a good experience.
Julien Elleouet
Good quality, nice atmosphere, big quantity of food and REALLY CHEAP!!! The boxes are good, service is good and quick. A very nice experience!!
Crystal Wong
Great place. Nice and quiet and the sushi and sashimi were very authentic. I went with a friend and the service was quick and the wait staff was very friendly
Green Tea
The agedashi tofu looks nice - light golden yellow. Seaweed salad is okay. The toro, saba, and assorted sashimi are okay; doesn't look as good as the more expensive sushi places. For the chopped scallop sushi, there are lots of chopped scallops with lots of mayo and tobiko; but the portion of rice is small compared with other sushi places. The scallops didn't taste fresh; maybe that was why there were lots of mayo and tobiko. My friend and I were glad that we were not sick after eating their raw fish.<br/><br/>They gave us lots of wasabi and soy sauce for our takeout. The piece of lettuce, which was underneath the sashimi was fresh and green. They didn't really have service; they just asked for our phone number when we ordered on the phone without asking for our name. You can sensed that they really want to be as quick as possible. Their price is not cheap; it only seems cheap compared to other sushi places in Downtown.
Philip DiCiero
Great fresh and reasonably priced!! No mayo or other coverups for the sushi just great taste! Come early as this place is super small with only 4 tables and gets crowded at night.
Alan King Bowden
Great little sushi spot with creative rolls, good prices and large portions. <br/><br/>Tuna tataki was ok, have had better many other places. The Maki were huge servings and the sashimi was fresh and full of flavour. The special rolls all look amazing if that's what your into.
KoalaKouple
Quick, delicious, good value!<br/>It's a small seating area, but turnaround is quick so if you can spare 10 min wait, do it before you spend that time walking to a neighboring sushi spot.<br/><br/>Got the bento box (b) (beef teriyaki) and my boyfriend got the bento box (a) chicken teriyaki. We both arrived super hungry for lunch and left stuffed, great size lunch for 9$! It came with a miso soup and salad starters with tea. The box included 2 shrimp and 2 veggie tempura, 4 California maki pieces (with the pickled ginger and wasabi of course), rice topped off with chosen meat (they had pork available too) as well as these 3 little spicy crispy things with a full ... sorry I don't know the name of it! <br/><br/>In any case, I'd be back for another bento box! <br/><br/>

was curious on how a sushi place in downtown gets so high rating and i've never heard much from my friends about the place either. so then, went here on a sunny day, and ordered a tuna salmon combo and a spicy salmon roll. the place is rather small and seems like while i was sitting in the place there are quite a few frequent customer who came in and have their food picked up. the server was japanese she was very attentive and friendly. thumbs up for the server. the chef and other cooks inside were chinese. the food came and the salmon and the tuna combo was just okay nothing to rave about, the sushi rice is average as well, the spicy salmon roll, they put the tempura crumbs inside as well which is definitely something different but at the same time, surprises me a little bit. overall i would say is definitely average, but for the price of downtown sushi hmmmm slightly not as recommended as there are many different alternative around.
Foodie In Vancity
Very affordable price but not worth it for the quality. It was also pretty hard to find being squished in the corner of the street. The service was not too bad but being so small, I felt kind of cramped. Overall, I might come back here again if I'm looking for something cheap and filling.
DanoRama
Sorta blown away how this place has a 4.0 total score. I mean it isn't bad necessarily for what you pay for, but the quality, service nor atmosphere demands more than a 3.0-3.5. Sushi quality was very average. Nigiri pieces were small and my tuna was a bit water logged. I did like how the rice was warm, however and my Dynamite role had plum sauce on it which was an interesting, but a tasty touch. They forgot to bring out my Amebi to the very end of my meal.
Natalie
Co-worker and I went here to pick up some lunch in here. Staff was super friendly. Place is quite small, so not sure I would eat in. But the food was ready quickly (we called ahead) and was delicious.
Pauleena Ling
Yamato has very limited seating in a small setting and seems busy at all times of the day, so unless there's only two of you I'd recommend takeout as an option. We've been here several times for the sushi (never tried the hot menu items) and each visit has been positive. Our recommendation is to try the Magma roll. Pricing is very good, with the bill usually adding up to about $25 for two (with tip included). This is a top pick for some affordable and delicious sushi in the Yaletown area!
Aloe
A cosy place to dine in during non-lunch/dinner hours, otherwise it's too tiny and busy to sit and enjoy a meal. Items à la carte are not particularly cheap albeit reasonably priced; but the bento boxes and sushi combos are very good deals given the portion sizes. Prawn tempuras are somewhat skinny. California roll is a bit disappointing. BC roll is impressive.
Gypsy Girl
I have yet to find a better sushi place with such inexpensive prices. It's not the highest quality ever but it's definitely pretty good. I often call in advance for their take out since they can have most things ready in less than 15mins. Every time I'm around there the place seems packed which says a lot for a small little restaurant outside of Yaletown.
Colin Houston
This is my go-to sushi restaurant. Outstanding prices, great tasting sushi, and the servers and cooks are such kind people. I've been going solely here for over a month now, and suggest the place to everyone. I'm sure you could find better sushi, but not at this price, and at this speed. The place is small and busy, but for take-out on an evening when you don't feel like you cooking.. you can't beat it. Its nearly cheaper to eat here every night than make your own food... 5 stars! Love Yamato!
Suraj Virk
I love the deep fried California roll. It is the best! The portions are very generous and they offer quick service. The restaurant is very small so I wouldn't recommend going with more than 4 people at once .They have about about 4 tables that sits 2 at each and about 6 stools (window & by the cashier).
Jon B
Typical hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant NOT owned/operated by Japanese people. This means that the fish is not fresh, service is not attentive, and the restaurant is not clean. How this place got a 4.0 rating boggles my mind. I wouldn't come back even for the nominal savings -better off going to Sushiville.
Chelsea B
The sushi was completely uneatable, the fish, fishy, and chewy. And the teriyaki  was just greasy.<br/>The tuna, had several bones in it.<br/>I would not recommend eating here, ever!
Idea Rabbit
We were on a rush, so we stopped by Yamato Sushi for take out. Not only that, I had never been fond of this restaurant (whenever I passed by), seeing how people were crammed into a closet sized room. Sheepie also was a bit claustrophobic, so it was good that we were only there to order. As I expected, the inside was super small. It was dirty and not well kept. The menu was quite extensive. We ordered the Box Special A $7.25 which came with chicken terikyaki which were cheap fatty chicken meat – the poor quality kind. The gyoza were not Japanese gyoza, but Chinese deep fried moneybags. The tempura, California rolls, small salad and miso were mediocre. Good price, but you get what you paid for. Would I ever return? I don’t think so.

It's hard to sort through the endless sushi options in Vancouver, but this one is worth seeking out for a casual bite. This place is always super busy at lunch, people coming in and out for pick-up and can have a wait for a seat, but I find that it's always worth it! Don't expect frills, but you will get fresh, tasty sushi. Go right for the nigiri, sashimi or rolls. Fair price too.
Themortgagewhisperer
Every thing had gone down hill here!. This place has seriously gone down hill. They used to provide 10 pieces, then 8 and now it's down to 6. All 'at the same prices'. They now only provide a few chinzy packets of soy sauce, not the the plastic containers where you could mix in the wasabi. The packets are nearly enough. And the sushi doesn't seem to be nearly as tasty.<br/><br/>We're now driving over to Commercial Street for our sushi. Much better, far tastier and much more of it. Some of the best sushi restaurants in the city.
Vancity101
I found a staple in my roll!!!!! Be careful people! This is the second incident I've had with Yamato and the first review I'm writing on UrbanSpoon. I usually don't write reviews on restaurants as I don't have the time or the care to sit there and tell people about my experience. This however, is a safety issue! It's serious and I think it's important everyone is aware. I found a ball of paper in my gomae a couple of weeks ago aswell. Truly sad because they have great prices and the place is very close to where I live with long hours.

Disgrace to Japanese food. Not authentic all. Their "chicken massage" is plain fries chicken wings. Udon was overcooked and soft. Better sushi can be found inn the supermarket. Even though the place is run by non-Japanese, Japanese people would perform seppuku after eating here in shame and bow a thousand times in apology. Never coming here again.
Sheillabell
Bad customer service. Fast food service but every time I go to this resto, I feel the cold service from the server. I'm a regular customer who just lives down the block. Food is cheap and average. Sometimes, they cut you short on the sushi pieces. Today, the server rolled her eyes to me as she took my order. I've never done anything wrong but just to be the average customer who wanted to order take out. I will never order from this resto again.
Haruka T
I had been here twice. The first time, my boyfriend and I got takeout when it was really quiet. The second time, we actually ate in when it was busier at the bar.<br/><br/>When the place is quiet, the sushi is okay—decent—but when it's busy, the quality of the seafood really starts to go downhill. Sashimi that's not properly chilled enough, tamago touching raw fishes, raw fish touching the glass of the fridge, just to name a few.<br/><br/>As someone with a strict Japanese background and upbringing, I was not very amused. I don't mean to be prude, but I would rather make makizushi at home or go to an authentic Japanese restaurant where the staff aren't stressed out or a tad bit rude.
Travis
Great sushi, great price!. Vancouver is known for their great, but cheap sushi. This place may be small, but the sushi is amazing! I couldn't believe how fast my food came out. The portions are huge and at a great price - can beat it!
Jason
I like this place because I live right across the street, so ordering take-out is perfect for me. It's fast and cheap. The bento boxes always fill me up. Don't expect a gourmet experience or anything.
Asean Tee
My favourite.. I get this whenever I'm in the area. I compare all other sushi to Yamato. For the price and size, can't be beat. Never disappointed.
Hawkeye
Ok Cheap Sushi. Title says it all. Cheap and average.
Greedygreedyguts
Inauthentic Japanese not made by Japanese people. I don't know why this place was packed when I visited. Perhaps it was the dirt cheap prices, but that's what you pay for.
Leana Mod
Used to be so much better. Quality is no longer there. I've been a customer since 2009 but I can now say they've lost me and I will no longer recommend them.
Tiffaraydee
Visited this place on our last night in Vancouver, as it was rated #6 on urbanspoon for sushi in Vancouver. The place is small but cozy. The service by one particular person was horrible. She took our order and basically scowlled the whole time. The meals were inexpensive but not as fresh as one would hope (I guess you get what you pay for). <br/>Ideal for a students budget. <br/>Not ideal when you want quality.
Michael C
Cheap with a kick in my stomach! If you are picky about your sushi (eg: noir, sushi rice, etc), this wouldn't be an ideal place to go. Decided to have their Chirashi since haven't visited them for a while, and that's where my tragedy began... The fish were not fresh! And found my last piece of meat had rotten :S Their fish are usually okay, due to the among of customers...Might not go back anymore...
Janice Traub
Good value sushi.... If you are looking for inexpensive sushi and do not mind sacrificing quality (and your arteries) a bit this place is a good choice. The tempura is on the greasy-side (oil just oozes out of it), the quality of the food items is average (ok tuna, ok salmon), the rolls are not 'wrapped to perfection' .....BUT it is well priced for the quantity/quality and the service is super fast.... One thing I do not like though is that on the debit/visa machine as it automatically expects you to tip (before you have even been served your 'take-out' meal).
Tastyfoodie
Fantastic hole-in-the-wall. Checked it out last week mainly because I was famished and there was an intriguing line-up outside. There's always a lineup of people waiting for take-out outside. I guess that answers itself! I had tuna sashimi, rice, california roll, salmon roll. I was originally a little sketchy about the tune because I wasn't sure quality wise what to expect.... but it was great and the food was pretty clean tasting. I'm pretty sure the tuna was previously frozen as it was super super cold in the middle, but that's okay for me-I would rather have previously frozen fish than luke warm fish. No slime, no wierd fish parts (as I've gotten in other restaurants), hot fresh rice, good seweed (not awkwardly too chewy, just right), and the portions were awesome!! It was like good sushi in Burnaby, but instead downtown. I find too many places downtown are too expensive for little portions and so-so quality. This was not the case, I will be going back for sure! Mind you- the wait is around 15-20min so make yourself comfy at the Starbucks across the way or something. Probably phone in is best.

My favourite sushi restaurant. I do love Yamato Sushi. It is a very small restaurant in Yale Town, Vancouver. The portions are very good and the sushi is great. Compared to other sushi places we went to in Vancouver and around British Columbia is is very inexpensive.<br/><br/>My favourite at this place is the Tuna Sashimi. The pieces are huge and absolutely tender so they melt on your tongue. In a different review I read that they experienced the tuna to taste fishy. This was so not the case on the two occasions I visited this place. The roles we ordered were also good.<br/><br/>As mentioned before this place is very small and casual. You can also order as takeaway.<br/><br/>The waiters were a bit distant but not unfriendly.<br/><br/>All in all I love this place and think it is great value for money. I miss such a place in London!!!
No Dessert Im Full
Top Spot Sushi?. So theres no where to sit, if you can snag the bar stool spots along the window then your golden! But if sitting down at one of the 6 tables as everyone waits in line beside you waiting for take-out is your thing then your in luck. It seems like the take-out system here works well and is fairly efficient, we roll with salmon rolls, crunch rolls (cali roll with tempura bits), spicy tuna roll, dynamite roll, and tempura appetizer. It all was brought out to us fairly quick, and we proceed to cross the street to eat at a table in the park. It was all not bad, nothing special really. The dynamite roll had a ridiculous amount of avocado in it which was super super mushy. The pluses to this spot is, take-out is super quick, the sushi is decent, and the prices really are very good. Top spot sushi? meh....
Jonathan W
Great little restaurant. We stumbled across this place when looking for lunch. The place is quite basic surroundings, but the sushi was excellent and portions generous. Definitely worth stopping by if you are in the neighbourhood.
Andrew Brasuk
Staff speaks zero English, and frankly are downright rude. But if you ignore those facts, this place has damn good sushi in a busy hole in the wall atmosphere.
Bob
Excellent quality fish. Tiny place with lots of take-out traffic.
Hot Body Jason
Good sushi + small restaurant + high volume of people = fresh sushi. Probably the best sushi you can get "bang for your buck" wise.
Jonny
My favorite sushi place. This place has great food and great prices. I dont eat raw fish, and this place has plenty of selection of rolls and things that dont have raw fish. I find a lot of the downtown sushi places only have California rolls as the only non-sashimi option. The Kerrisdale and Victoria rolls are the best!
Dina
Can't get enough.. I love this place! I order take out from Yamato (limited seating) on a weekly basis.<br/><br/>The food is always fresh, ingredients flavorful and delicious and the prices can't be beat. By far my favorite "to go" style Japanese place downtown. It even beat out my old favorite in Kits!
PickyFoodCritic
Nice Presentation and Tasty!. Very small place, <br/><br/>Very nice food presentation. Tried 4 kinds of sushi so far, pretty tasty. They add their own sauce on top of the sushi so you hardly need any sou sauce!
Morgan Rae
Favourite Sushi Spot. Great sushi, quick, friendly service and amazing prices! I'm here at least once a week, often more.
Kimbotz
Great Yaletown Takeout!. This is my favorite sushi place in the Yaletown area. I have a stupid allergy to wasabi and they're always really careful not to put it in my orders at my request (80% of the time I request for no wasabi at other restaurants, they include it). The price is AWESOME for yaletown/downtown for the quality of their sushi.<br/><br/>Definitely go for takeout rather than eating in because it is small inside!
Matt
Best Japanese in the Area but go for take out. This is the best value Japanese in Yaltown/S. Granville. The food is really good, but the prices are amazing.<br/><br/>I'm sure most will go for the cheap sushi, but their Beef Teriyaki is actually my favorite dish.<br/><br/>Only knock is the seating area sucks: it's cramped and very cold in the winter. I recommend ordering ahead and getting takeout for sure!
Erik
Basic rolls were very affordable and quite delicious. Special chef rolls were also very good. The restaurant was a little cramped and there were occasionally some service difficulties, but all in all, this restaurant is a great place for a cheap and easy sushi dinner.
Edddieee
Great place for a quick sushi feast. Best spicy tuna roll in town. The staff are exceptional- super polite and efficient.
Foodie11
Best price, tasty no frill sushi. This is my go-to sushi place. Always fast, friendly, efficient. Sushi is good, fresh, and decently priced in yaletown.
Domestic Dreamboat
Best rolls!. Went here for supper on the first night of my Vancouver trip. Ordered 4 rolls to split between 2 people, but there was tonnes leftover because I didn't realize that the rolls would be so huge! I don't remember what any of the rolls were called, but they were all good. Only complaint would be that some had a bit too much sauce or mayo. But good place overall. It's a tiny place, and it was packed the whole time we were there, even had to squeeze 3 people in to a table for 2.
Mike
Best value you'll find in downtown. Great sushi, friendly service, and reasonable prices. The spicy tuna combo hits the spot.
Trudi Castle
Delicious food - the best avocado nigiri I have ever had! Good range of food to choose from, generous portion sizes too, even for someone with a huge appetite like mine! Small and cramped though, lots of hustle and bustle, definitely not a place to have a quiet night out. Eat your food and go! Or get a take out like most people seem to, judging by the hangers around on the sidewalk. Recommended though!
Kathrynredford
Authentic. It's much too small for how popular it is! It's perfect for take out and has great prices, variety and fresh ingredients. The service is efficient and consistent which I appreciate as it gets extremely busy.
Trinity
I like DAVIE ROLL. Place not but food is delicious, I like your davie roll, very special
Justine Wa-Lau Hsu
It's not bad. I think it's slightly better than your average cheap sushi place. It's quite busy so for take out I would suggest calling in advance to place your order.
Michael
Not to bad. Nice place but what blew the evening was being asked to leave no less than two minutes after settling our bill. We were about to exit but being asked to leave turned an evening of great food, good service into feeling disgruntled.
Raccoon
Delights for vegetarians too. There are many, many sushi places in downtown Vancouver. When I first arrived here, I wondered which one would be good on Davie Street. Almost by magic, a passerby pointed to Yamato and said, "This one."<br/><br/>It really is a great place - always bustling, so it's great to get take-out and bring it home. I'm a vegetarian, and there are two rolls in particular that I order religiously: yam and avocado roll and spicy tofu roll. Flavourful, beautifully done every time. It's heavenly. And inexpensive too. For such a busy environment, I find the service efficient and friendly.

Sushi Nuggets. I've been staying across the street from Yamato Sushi for the past 2 months and have been here a few times. Yes the restaurant is inexpensive and generous, but the quality of the sushi preparation is really questionable. When ordering sashimi, I'm given half inch thick rectangle nuggets of raw fish. On what planet is this sashimi? I've asked several times for it to be cut thinly, but I just don't think they get it. Sushi chefs will tell you that the taste of sushi is all in the cutting and this is not cut properly. <br/><br/>The restaurant also doesn't stock many common cuts of sashimi like Hamachi / Yellowtail. The selection is very limited. <br/><br/>They are always very nice and quick. The tempura is light and cooked perfectly. The food is inexpensive. But if you are looking for quality sashimi, look elsewhere.
Sunnys
Tiny place, great food.. Coming from Calgary, where the sushi is expensive, it was such a treat to find this place. This is some of the best sushi I've ever had and so cheap.
Denis Savard
So good and yet, so cheap!
Andrew Michael Scott
Best Sushi Spot! The best!. I have been going to Yamato for over 3 years and they have always been so kind and generous. One time, I forgot my wallet and they just got me to pay next time i came in. How great is that? The famous rolls are delish, and the bento box is my fave. Very reliable! They also always let me switch the cali roll for a yam roll at no extra charge. I love this place! Please go!
Stephen B.
Best in the Province. When talking value for money it doesn't get any better than this. Price very reasonable and the quality is excellent. Service can't get any better. Only place I've had better was in Singapore... And had to pay way too much. We drive in from the burbs for this... It's that good!
HeyHeyMyMy
Great food for the quick - the biggest Sushi rolls and very creative compsitions. Since moving to Vancouver I have been there so many times, I cannot count it. And my wife likes it, too. One of the first things we do when we are back in Vancouver is to go there and get the quickest service, the biggest and most innovative roll creations ever. Favorite: Stanley Park Roll and Salmon Teriyaki Roll !!!<br/>We noticed staff changes but are not sure about the ownership. <br/>Just don't drink the "tea" they are offering. You can ask for water as well.
John Tino
Awful! Looks like it's under new ownership and quality has gone downhill. The tako sashimi has the texture of vulcanized rubber, the eel was mushy, the rice is sour and freshness is a distant memory. It used to be my favorite place to eat. I didn't even eat half of my order! Fail!

I'd eat here daily!. Are you kidding me?! This is a great sushi place! They have a really expansive menu and the most inexpensive prices I have seen. Take-out is a breeze (they gave me tea while I waited) and finding a seat for a small (4 or less) group is okay. The Spicy Tuna roll was really solid, the tempura ($3.50!!) was crisp and light, and the fancy rolls are varied and large. Yamato...!

Awesome, cheap eats. Great locale if you're in the downtown core as it's easily accessible. Although the specials are good, try the other rolls named after various Vancouver streets.

Good place for takeout, very fast, big portions, cheap, don’t expect gourmet sushi

The Dragon Roll consisted of unagi, avocado, masago and prawn tempura. The flavours worked nicely together and the tempura batter provided some crispiness to the roll. The sesame seeds helped accentuate the flavour of the unagi and although the mayonnaise was a bit thick in places, I liked how the roll wasn't drenched in sauce.

I love this place! If you ever want cheap eat in downtown, look no farther cause not alot of places offer a full meal for $6.25 and it is actually filling. They have like 5 different sushi special. The one I ordered is sushi special A, (California Roll / Yam Tempura Roll / Tuna Maki) which comes with a miso soup as well if that is your thing. (Alot of people don’t like liquid tofu soup :P)  I have tried other stuff from yamato other than their sushi specials. For the price you pay it is great!           Filed under: Downtown , Japanese , Lunch , Sushi Tagged: sushi

I think my initial impression of Yamato sushi from reading its online reviews was right. It was more similar to sushi town than it was different. It served large portions of inauthentic sushi that made me full, but that I didn’t necessarily enjoy.
Food Queen
Everything was really fresh and I enjoyed all of the rolls. Once again this is an amazing deal and two people could easily share this for a meal.

Yamato Sushi is a small place on Davie between Granville and Seymour St. I forgot to take a picture from outside, but it's painted in red and if you don't look carefully you'll surely miss it. The seating is very limited so if you don't have to eat in, it

Overall, the prices are great and the food is decent. You get what you pay for, so don’t expect this to be the best sushi you have ever had.

Yamato Sushi on Davie near Seymour is one of the many places here that have a very well priced sushi maki roll combo box. It's actually kind of funny, that the prices as you go south of say, well Davie, the prices on those boxes drop considerably.

As there isn’t much seating in this little restaurant, it’s usually best to try and snag a spot at the counter or get takeout. Yamato has a great sweet/spicy house sauce, and the best thing to get here are any rolls made with this sauce.

Jenkins and my search for cheap but good sushi eats has been well documented on this blog. :) One day, we were walking around on Davie Street in downtown looking for a new place to try out. We had noticed on several occasions that Yamato Sushi was bustlin

Yamato Sushi Restaurant is a tiny hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant on the edge of Yaletown downtown. Yamato has decent food quality and incredibly low prices. Carrotstop , a

I went to Yamato Sushi with my good friend Cisco Grajales III a few months ago, and I realize now that I never posted a review. All three of the Davie Street sushi joints (between Seymour and Granville) are good, but this time we just stayed at Yamato Sushi. The sushi rolls were very fresh and the specialty roll (avocado) was delicious. Overall, I would probably come back to Yamato Sushi, although I'm not crazy about it. I would probably go first to Mo Mo Sushi! Related posts: Restaurant review - Zipang Sushi (Main Street - Mount Pleasant) Spin Roll Sushi (Downtown Vancouver) Miko Sushi (Robson Street, West End)
