Review Grub - Vancouver

I would begin by saying that the experience is mind-blowing. The soup of the day, and not to mention the French toast which was my favourite, immediately raised our expectations for the rest of the meals. The seared scallop was delicious and light. I like how the rice that came with it has a lot of veggies and a spark of spiciness and juiciness when bit into. The pork belly was cooked so well that it was crispy and the fat just melted in my mouth like a dream. It will take too long to describe every dish but every dish didn’t disappoint and this is the type of food that you could feel the chef’s ingenuity and creativity. We were really pleased. It is a rather small restaurant but definitely a hidden gem.

Came here for dinner before our 80s dance night. They saw our outfit and played all 80s tunes for us! Love that. The menu has lots of vegan and gf options. The food and service was amazing. I can’t say enough how everything just tasted great and it was such a wonderful experience. The place is small but so cute and the decor is great for photos. I highly recommend coming here.

We were blown away by our experience here. They are serving absolutely incredible food in an unpretentious way, and the menu is enticing with interesting and sometimes unusual flavours. The food is cooked to a very high quality and the price is more than reasonable for how good the food is. It has to be one of my new favourite restaurants in Vancouver and one which I'll readily recommend to others. I really can't wait to return!

One of my favourite meals and experiences in Vancouver. This chef owned restaurant did not disappoint with any dish we tried. Between 4 of us, we tried 10 different dishes and all were delicious! Some group favourites were the mushroom toast, the sable fish and the onion tart. The cork fee was around $25, so we brought our own wine. There was one super efficient server working a fully packed house and she also handled all the bartending, we were all super impressed. I can't wait to go back!!!

I'm so glad we stumbled upon this place! The service was down to earth and friendly, and the food was outstanding. Everything we tried was so delicious and the portions were perfect for us. Also the Lavender Sour is now one of my new favourite cocktails.

Last minute choice, great decision. Small but really stylish and interesting space (great bathrooms!). Diverse menu with something for everyone. Friendly service, tasty and well-priced food - will be back!

Great place on main Street. Small store front with a small sign. We were looking for a place for dinner and almost walked right by. When you walk in the light is low and there is a small bar and tables. Decor is minimal. The secret, is there is a small patio in the back it's covered and has heaters. U almost feel like u are sitting in a fun backyard. Menu is small but focused. Great options including fish, lamb, Riley, venison. We had shared the pork belly appetizer, venison schnitzel, and lamb. With a toffee pudding at the end. All the food was excellent and well portioned. Lamb was slightly more done than we would have liked but still delicious. Bar menu is like the food menu, small but deliberate. We had a nice bottle of kettle valley Pinos grisio. Price point is probably $$ to $$.5. Our dinner and drinks with tip was about $160. Take away the wine and it was about $80 which i felt was reasonable for the amount and quality. Our server was a good dude, blonde lean guy, knew the menu and made great recommendations. Good for family dinner, business, friends, or date night. Would go back .

Lovely!! Went here with my family and couldn’t be happier. The service was fantastic and atmosphere was light and fun. I had the steak with potato pave and peppercorn sauce and it was unreal! I also tried several of the other dishes from other people in my party and they were all delicious. Highly recommended for a more casual but still delicious evening out.

Beautiful restaurant. Nice for a date or special occasion without costing too much. Menu has something for everyone. We ended up getting the three course meal for the price of a two course. Meals were all tasty - but not quite a 5 star. Cocktails were nice. Our waiter was doing the whole place himself and was very friendly and sweet.

Grub is a small eatery on Main Street that’s been open since 2007. It’s funny because I’ve often driven or walked past this area of Main Street and have never even noticed this restaurant. Run by Chef/Owner Ling, there’s a surprising well-rounded selection of options on the menu with 95% of their produce supplied by their farm in Langley.

Fannypack and I celebrated my birthday a little late this year as we were both busy but we made it work. Grub on Main was my final choice as it was out of downtown and their menu sounded yummy, although what you see on their website doesn’t necessarily reflect what they’re offering at the moment.

Finally I got a chance to try this restaurant with my friends tonight. Here is how I rated this restaurant.

Ambiance:
The environment and atmosphere are quite comfortable. The wall has wall paper within interest patterns. Each table has a candle and candle holder. There are not too many tables in the restaurant but the quantity is good enough for a small restaurant. The counter at the back of the restaurant has interest displays and wine bottles on the walls for decoration.

Food:
We ordered three dishes of food: onion tart, steak and duck. The quality of their food was above average. The presentation of each dish was quite appealing and colourful. For example, the dish of meat had some colourful vegetables beside it. Each dish smelt great. One score that got deducted was because of the meat such as steak and duck that was too chewy. My friend and I had to spit out some of the chewy part.

Price:
The pricing was reasonable comparing to other western or Canadian restaurants. The first page of the menu stated Grub Fresh Sheet. I looked at the price of each of the dishes on this page. I thought those dishes of food were the main course. Indeed the dishes on this page were appetizers only. When I flipped to the second page, the menu did not state main course or anything. Of course if I saw steak, pork, duck, Ling cod and etc., I would know and think that these food were the main course. Drinks and desserts were not listed on their double sided menu.

Service:
Our server was very responsible taking care of our orders, taking away the dirty plates and cutleries and replacing them with clean ones. The server did not interrupt us too much in between the meals. It was great and that was what I liked. Since the restaurant was not too busy, two servers could handle the traffic. What I found or personally felt about the server(s) at this restaurant was that they could be more friendly or have some smile on their face in front of the customers. If so, that would be perfect!

One of our favourite meals out in a long time. My entire family got the Lamb because it was so enticing. Service was amazing and we loved the ambiance of the place. We have been recommending it to everyone we know.

Service - 4.5/5
Menu knowledge - 5/5
Allergy accommodations - 5/5
Timeliness 5/5
Cocktails - 5/5
Ambiance - intimate and quirky.

I highly recommend you to get your grub on.

The service is terrible.waiting45 minutes for appetizer to arrive after ordering??? No explanation they weren't that busy at all.seemed like they were doing you a flavor buy bringing your food to you .hello your in the service business.with so many choices in this great city wouldn't you spend your money on a place with service like they actually care about your patronage.

Mouthwatering......every time. I've been here probably at least a half a dozen times and I have yet to be disappointed. I've enjoyed the vegan desserts to their triple A beef, to the fish & fowl - everything has been delicious. It is a bit cramped and I strongly recommend reservations. 2 Thumbs Way up.
Heavenlyfitness
Generous portions. Everyone ordered a different entrées, duck, steak, char, lamb. Cooked to perfection. There were no complaints.
Each one looked delicious, well presented. The Vegan dessert was big enough for two to share. I ordered the soup for a starter, it was big enough for a meal by itself.
Nice to get a bang for your buck.

Bad seafood. I had seafood poisin there a few years ago. i did call them to tell them no reply. i missed three days of work. they will never get my business again nor will i recommend it to anyone.

There's some skill here.. Went for the lady's birthday dinner. Very cosy and cute restaurant quite minimal. The tables were a bit tight, they could probably space them out a bit when they aren't full.

We both had the 3-course table d'hote, and overall there was some proper cooking that was refreshing to see in what I consider to be a mediocre food city. Everything was nicely seasoned, fish was cooked perfectly, meat was cooked perfectly, portion size was nice, dishes weren't overly adventurous but nicely balanced. The deserts were luscious...note that 3 courses is a lot.

2 Food complaints:

1. The entrees had cold garnishes which made no sense and detracted from the dish. Don't know how this crazy idea made its way to the plate

2. The presentation could have been a bit sexier...the food was delicious, why not make it look that way?

Great little place. We went on a Tuesday so that in itself was impressive and the dining room was full.

Thumbs up,, a few improvements and this place could have cult status.

LOVE this place! The food is simply delicious. Tonight I had the artic char on a bes of fresh pasta and mango salad and the pear strudel. Great prices and a more than average portion considering the solid quality. We also shared a punch bowl drink (6 oz total) with pimms and ginger beer. We will definitely be back many times!

Yum! We spend about a week each Fall in Vancouver and always research new restaurants. Grub was this year's big winner. Just what we like. Casual atmosphere. Unique and creative menu without being pretentious and of course, quality food to go with all that. Delicious meal--good steak, great rock fish dish. And scalloped potatoes to die for. Only note of disappointment was when the server told me the potatoes weren't really good for me. Who knew!
Hi There
Been here 5 times in 6 months. Great wait staff. Locally sourced delicious ingredients. Perfect presentation. Ample serving sizes. If I want to treat someone special this is where I take them. Avoid disappointment - make a reservation.
John Rudolph
Excellent. Oink! Thus place is a triple squeal and that's as good as it gets for casual but sorta upscale dining. Don't argue with me, just eat here. It's worth about twice what you pay which means that you can buck up for a BIG TIP as the service is worth it. If you don't eat here you are making a big mistake. If you do eat here you are my friend. Read other reviews for flowery descriptions of the food. I've had Michelin starred food and these guys keep up with it.

What a gem!! Amazing food but mediocre service. Food makes up for the service though. Definitely would recommend this spot to you.

Looked grubby but was great!. We have tried a few pretty good restaurants while vacationing in Vancouver the past few days. This one did not appear to be promising but we gave it a go. The service was good if a bit slow but the pace was dictated by the need for time to prepare the dishes which were excellent. A reasonable price for great food. We would visit it again and recommend it as well.

On the way down. I had a very good meal the first time I went to this restaurant not long after they opened. And the price was reasonable. Since then, each time I go back, I am disappointed by either the quality or the quantity offered (sometimes both) for the price paid. The food is still generally good and the service fine but this place has lost the edge it once had over its competitors by cutting dangerous corners.

I have seen that happening so many times in Vancouver: new restaurants attracting a client base with great food at good value for the first 6 months then switching to a more profitable scheme, i.e. decreasing quality/quantity while raising prices. A bizarre business model. Does it really work? Maybe over 1 or 2 years... then people move out and they are lost in the competition. May explain the huge turn over in this sector.

Can i get some service?. I have now been to Grub 4 times...let me rephrase: I have tried to go to Grub 4 times, but got turned away twice!! The first time I went here i was blown away, they're daily fresh menu was amazing, including a vegan option for me and lots of other options for my friend. So i rave about it to all my friends and tell them they have to go. I bring my fiance and he thinks its also AMAZING! well...the CHEF is amazing... the next 2 times we go there, they say they have reservations the whole night booked full...umm... okay? so It's 5pm (they open at 5) and you say you're expecting people at 6pm...you've reserved the entire restaurant with tables, and the hour before all these people come you won't serve us. Nice. The next time we go it was 9:30pm (they close at 11pm), we go for desert.. we get there and ask for a table, there are only 2 tables with people...and they inform us they are closing early and not accepting more guests...WOW! I was shocked. Is that even legal??? Anywho...if you wanna go for really great food and really HORRIBLE service then make a reservation and try it out. Or get take out? :D

Delicious, affordable, great drink selection with a good atmosphere. Can't ask for much more.

The grub menu constantly changes so it's always fresh and never stale. I just had the most amazing char dish with scallops and handmade pasta. Possibly the best pasta I've ever had in my life. A definite staple and it's no wonder why this restaurant is always so busy.

Flavour and value together at last! Top marks.

Just went tonight & we had the lam rack and salmon with the seafood antipasto to start and finished off with the pear strudel. Each dish was cooked to perfection and beautiful presentation. We are so full & will return soon.

Best, best and best.. Best food,
The cook is a genius, new menu everyday, always creative and amazing, you can bring your carnivores, vegys and vegans friends, everybody will get something fresh and new.
Best price,
To the point I really don't know how they manage to make a profit. Wine and drink sales maybe? They have some very creative coctails and punchs, I love the Tommy collins.
Best service,
Friendly, laid back but efficient and very adept at navigating that narrow alley between the tables.
Very limited seating, very busy, book early and see if you can find this tiny place on Main!

First-rate food. This is the antithesis of would-be fancy restaurants serving cafeteria food: The cooking here is absolutely first rate; the menu is full of interesting things designed for a broad range of tastes and preferences, all of which seem to be well executed (between us, we tried a good range of them). There's also a carefully picked but reasonably priced wine list, and a similarly good range of bottled beers. And they are desperately keen not to have any of that fine-dining swankiness in the atmosphere or attitude, as the monosyllabic name might lead you to expect, and as the peculiar wall paper, the hipster staff, the formica tables and the chalkboard menus quickly confirm. This pose of down-home unpretentiousness might have been slightly overdone, but that shouldn't be thought a serious complaint, the overall effect is of a place that is brilliantly suited to really enjoying the eating of dinner.

They made a mistake by double-booking our Reservation and did not apologise for their mistake and instead blamed us. The manager was rude and the owner even worse--a total inability to resolve conflict.

Our favourite little place in the neighbourhood!. Over the last two years, this has been a favourite place of ours to eat. The menu evolves almost daily with a selection of entrees on the blackboard. My wife almost always gets the vegan option which is so tasty! In anticipation of the birth of our first baby, my wife insisted on eating there weekly.. with her being almost 2 weeks late, we had regular Friday night reservations for FIVE consecutive weeks in a row. Yes, THAT good. We've been back once since the little one was born and FYI, they're more than happy to accommodate strollers.
Jenn
So worth it. The food was so good. i love the salmon pizza with plenty of smoked salmon toppings which tasted so amazing. vegetarian option is very good as well. menu is creative and very similar to fine dining food. but the price is significantly lower and the portion is so generous. i'm a big eater but this is one of a very few restaurants where i couldn't finish the food as i was too full. just don't order too much food and you'll feel properly full and satisfied and won't have to spend much money.
Main Street
Good food but fix your debit machine already!. I like the food here, they always offer a vegan and a vegetarian entree. They play good music, it's not too $ and service is solid. But, I find it really annoying that every night they have a sign saying 'no debit', just hurry up and fix your machine--restaurant goers use debit...the world uses debit...you need to have debit!
K
Vegan option. Grub has a vegan option every day. At first it only seemed to contain vegetables, but I returned recently and I think their understanding of vegan cooking has improved. The punch is great too.

My fave. I love you, grub!

How I Miss My GRUB. Grub is my favourite restaurant in Vancouver by far. It has the whole package.

Atmosphere: Well put together main street hangout without the art-student pretencion the area seems to attract.

Service: Always perfect. Casual, professional and knowledgeable wait staff. Food comes out quickly.

Food: I've had some good meals here and I've had some GREAT meals here. The fresh sheet gives it a fine dining feel, as you know the chef has actually gone to the market and created something unique for that day. The fact that there's always a vegan, a vegetarian and free range or ocean wise meat dishes makes it a great meeting place for varied parties. The Tommy Collins is a must try for lazy Sunday dinners after hitting the beach.

Value: Is amazing. Try getting truffle oil quinoa or Free range NY strip loin with chantrelles for $15 anywhere else. Boston pizza prices for high end food.

Vancouver living has a lot of perks, but if GRUB moved itself to Calgary I'd probably just settle for prairie living.

Excellent Seasonal Specials. We tried the vegetarian and vegan specials, and they were both scrumptious. The vegan special contained stuffed pepper with mushroom, asparagus, eggplant, and soba noodles. The vegetarian special had roasted potatoes, bean salad, and a ricotta phyllo pastry.

The staff were laid back and unpretentious, but the food was fine dining quality.

It doesn't matter what you eat here, you love it! Amazing little place! A must try!

Better than Great!!. GRUB was the perfect place for a nice, luxurious yet relaxing meal. The atmosphere from the moment I entered the restaurant was amazing. From the sunshine yellow booth styled seats to the abstract designed wallpaper it was very inviting. During my visit, my friend and I enjoyed their crab soufflé and their pancakes with pears. It was the first time I've had a savoury soufflé or pancakes with pears and cream cheese, and it was delicious. I stronly recommend this place to everyone...although it may seem a bit pricey but it is truly worth EVERY PENNY!!
I can't wait to eat at Grub for many many time in the future.

Grub Me Another Evening At Grub. A table of six ladies, freshly muddled and created beverages all around and delicious mains. Clean, bright, minimal and style conscious surroundings, with amazing wallpaper by Vancouver artist Lee Hutzulak. The cool thing about this spot is not only do they have a set menu of delicious options but the daily fresh selections on the chalkboard rule, with literally something for everyone. Daily meat selections, as well as vegetarian AND vegan! Finally a place where everyone can eat together!! So long as the vegan doesn't mind sitting across from the girl eating the rare lamb... :)

I had the vegetarian, which was a delicious and buttery crepe filled with beet, yam and goat cheese, on a bed of butternut squash and celeraic.

They are also now serving brunch, which will be exciting to try. The service was also super friendly and unpretentious, though a bit slow (there was one girl working and it was possibly an unpredictably busy Wednesday evening!)

It's my second time at Grub and I'll be back again. I'd rather spend $25 here on dinner than at a faux upscale chain like Cactus Club!

Tasty, clean, with quality.... What a surprise! Each well constructed dish we had was balanced perfectly -highlighting the inherent individual flavours of each item, yet not overly fussy, sauced or rich, but perfectly cooked. (wish the halibut could be a regular menu item, not just a 'special', as it was delectable) Loved the seafood salad - fresh spinach, smoked trout, prawns, gravad lax, strawberries and a passion fruit dressing that made a very lovely combination. From the very inventive alcoholic drinks (try the Casablanca) through to the dessert (a freshly baked fruit cobbler), each individual course was savoured and enjoyed!

Grub has a nice unassuming/ main street feel to it, and the food is amazing! We ate the veggie casserole and char, both were delicious, better than expected and well worth the price. The dessert cobbler was a nice finish to a meal that blew our expectations. Service was very good, friendly and quick. I highly recommend grub to any foodie, but especially the veggiterians and vegans as they have food for all!

First thing that makes this place great, is the lack of pretense, it's cool without really trying. Genuine, friendly staff. Off kilter arty atmosphere that's hip without banging ya on the head with kitsch or making you feel you need to be dressed in the latest (thrift store) fashions, i.e. you could bring Mom. The two of us started with the veggie antipasto plate, it contains the usual olives, ratatouille, cheese, hummus and veggie pate, but it is highlighted by the palate popping purple cabbage with fennel seeds (these would provide the pop). The plate has a nice variety of colours, textures and flavours and is a good value starter. Next was the "fresh sheet" pork tenderloin entree, quite possibly one of the most perfectly constructed dishes we've ever tasted. The escalating, yet balanced levels of sweetness from the braised cabbage to the sweet potatoes thru to the blueberry compote were countered by the bright green bitter rapini and then topped off by the oh so tender star of the dish, the moist pink pork tenderloin with balsamic/maple glaze . Just like this whole place, hearty, whimsical and real. Oh, don't forget to check out the sharing punch bowls, a signature drink if there ever was one and totally unlike the punch you remember from the senior prom. Excellent music selection, seemed it was alt rock circa 1979 this evening, The Replacements, The Clash, The Jam, Television, The Specials and Elvis Costello. An all around wonderful experience. Go to Grub!

The name peaked my interested, and the bodies waiting outside had me wanting in. This International fusion restaurant would be what I would describe as a hole in the wall on. A tiny space, cozy but too casual to be romantic. Each table was set up along the right wall, a line of booths in pale yellow with back supporting cushions to boot. The chairs were hard, and even with my best efforts I was unable to get comfortable in one. It didn’t help that the narrow space meant my seat in the isle continued to get kicked as servers and patrons walked by. The room was dimly lit, with little brightness coming from tea lights and low hanging balls above. The wallpaper was the most interesting, a unique pattern produced by stamps. Images of deer, a person made from fire, a naked man kneeling with a snake wrapped around him, a half man and half car, a microwave, and other things too intricate to describe. From a distance they looked like printed flowers. Though close up, they mad

Best entrees I have ever had in Vancouver, hands-down. It was just so excellent, moist, and extremely well-executed of excellent ingredients. Appetizers slightly disappointing and the desserts were pretty spectacular. Love the changing, seasonal menu.

The appetizers were a bit disappointing but the main course and the desserts were pretty nice.

Also a great place for vegetarians.

I’ve been to Grub many times now, and it’s never failed to impress. Definitely one of my top ten favorites in Vancouver. At Grub they have a small menu of tapas, appetizers and salads, as well as a daily specials menu. They usually have eight specials, four meat varieties, two seafood, a vegetarian and a vegan option. Each time I’ve eaten at Grub I’ve ordered off the board and each time it’s been amazing. There’s also a three course prix-fixe menu option which is an amazing deal; appy, entree and dessert for $32. Can’t beat that! Pescatarian Antipasto Plate I ordered the Ling Cod special this evening. It consisted of a seared ling cod fillet with shellfish filled ravioli in a lobster bisque with mango and pineapple salsa. It was perfect. Ling Cod/Seafood Ravioli/Lobster Bisque Vegan Summer Berry Cake with Strawberry Creme Chocolate Bourbon Torte Seriously, I feel like this place can do no wrong. Some of the tastiest, most well thought-out mea

At Grub the menu changes every night to reflect what is seasonal and fresh. The norm on their menu will always have a selection of meat, seafood, vegetarian and vegan dishes to choose from. Commonly, if it is a busy night some of their dishes may run out and you might be left with only the vegetarian option. Nevertheless, even if you aren’t a vegetarian you will enjoy their creation.

This little hide away caught my attention. A very obscured room with two black board on the wall. Beef/Pork/Lam/Fish…ha cute!

Lovely company and good food, what more can I ask for - probably more Sangria and dessert ha!

All in all, we quite enjoyed our dinner. While I would recommend others to try it, I do find Grub a bit on the pricey side. I compare it to Les Faux Bourgeois , whose entrees are mostly below $20, but the food and service were comparable to Grub, if not better. I'd suggest going with a bigger appetite and order the Table d'Hote menu. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

In some ways, it almost feels like Grub would fit in better in Gastown than on Main Street, but it still retains a hip neighborhood charm. The menu is constantly changing, aside from some of the main appetizers and thin crust pizzas, so you’ll need to come in and take a look at the chalkboard on the wall for the “fresh sheet” of the day.

The evening’s vegan dessert consisting of biscuits layered with fresh fruit.... – who knew there was a vegan friendly version of cool whip...

Casual. Ethereal. Excellent. GRUB on Main Street in Vancouver features a vegetarian and vegan dinner option daily, as well as a vegan dessert. I recommend this restaurant for date nights, out-of-town guests and dinner with friends. With its creatively divine dishes, GRUB offers the best vegan meal in Vancouver . :: Yam & cauliflower terrine ~ sweet corn, white bean and kale succotash ~ red beet, pear and spinach in maple vinaigrette… E X C E L L E N T ! 5 out of 5.

I was on one of my usual (and delightful) walks with the lovely Emme Rogers when we happened to stumble upon Grub , a relatively new (2009) wine bar/restaurant that I had been wanting to try for a long while. When I first viewed the room (late in 2009) I
