Review Greenhorn Cafe - Vancouver

Krishna Haridas
Cute little place for brunch in the West end. We loved the food and the laid back casual atmosphere of the place. The servers were friendly and complimented the chill vibe of the place. We loved all the dishes and the Vietnamese coffee we ordered, the drip coffee and hot chocolate were meh. I wish they would improve their reservation system as right now the only way to get in is to put your name down and wait outside the cafe until someone calls your name.

I came here with a group of friends for brunch on a Thursday. It can be a little busy because it’s so popular. And I see why! The staff is so attentive and helpful. We were recommended to try the Eggs Benedict, which has a couple of different options to choose from. I chose the Mushroom Benedict, half size. The price difference between half and full is not much, so I suggest just buying the full order (2 pieces) instead. Also ordered Vietnamese coffee (iced, also comes hot). It was pretty delicious as well and complimented my food well! Would totally come again. There’s a random dinosaur figurine in the kitchen if you can catch it with your eye.

One of the best brunch cafe I've ever been to! My Bacon Eggs Benedict were cooked perfectly. There was a little bit of a kick from the paprika powder on the creamy and savory Hollandaise sauce 😋 I got the full size ($15) and it was worth it! Servers were very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend you guys to try!

The mushroom Benny was phenomenal! I paid extra to add avocado on the side and the portion was super generous! The hollandaise was delicious and the coffee is great! Definitely worth a stop for brunch!

I had the salmon Benedict which was very fresh, delicious and flavourful! Good sized portion that will fill you but not make you feel gross. I also had the Americano which hit the spot! Kudos to the staff for their friendly service. The atmosphere is very cute with a nice decor. The restaurant is nestled away into a quiet neighbour hood which makes it a surprising find.

A cute little place tucked away. Their eggs benedict is the best I've ever had and the coffee is so delicious I bought a bag of beans to take home. Only thing I would say is that the place could do with being a little warmer as it did get a little cold in there.

Very very good coffee. BLAT was good value and very tasty. Pleasant and prompt service. Edit. Came back for a second day for brunch. Breakfast burrito with hot sauce was excellent. Fantastic coffee again and also a really good playlist. The Smiths, Souxie and the Banshees, Jesus and Mary Chain, Gay Numan, New Order, The Sundays. Wow! Who picks the music?

Cozy, relaxing and just pure simple but good. Had the best experience in this great coffee shop. The food was deliciously healthy and the cappuccino's worth coming back for. And best of all, the staff are awesomely friendly! Thanks Greenhorn :)

This is my fave coffee shop in Vancouver. I live in London, UK and every time I visit my family, I hang out at this coffee shop. Great coffee, artful baristas, smiley staff, great interior!

One one of the best spots in the neighbourhood to grab a coffee and a light meal. Great ambience, friendly staff and wonderful music.

Myself and my wife made this our local cafe while visiting Van for 2 weeks and loved the coffee and food. I have had the best coffee yet and I drink lots of coffee in fine cafes in Dublin, but Greenhorn has topped all expections not only with the coffee but also the staff who were excellent with service and the atmosphere in the cafe was really special! Well done guys :)

Fast, friendly service. Great space to bring a book and read and even interact with the kind people who patronize the greenhorn. My only suggestion would be to add some plant based options to the menu(if there are not any already).

My favourite place in town - we never miss it when we come to Vancouver.

It's not only about the java, it's about the atmosphere. Big chain coffee shops can learn a thing or two from Greenhorn. Enjoying your cappuccino sans the hustle and bustle is bliss for my taste buds and brain. Nestled in the beautiful and historic West End, Greenhorn hits the spot! And their choice in playing Soul Music is just the cherry on top. Or should I say the foam on my latte ;).

Great food, great atmosphere, great music. Love the ham and cheese croissant, the pain au chocolat and the quiches! In fact, I love everything in Greenhorn....

Tastes like coffee, drinks like tea. Keep up the great work! Greenhorn is inspiring.

3.6 /5 I didn't come for their baguette. It turns out the chicken baguette is my favourite. I also tried the waffle with berry sauce, not so sweet, but soft. I would recommend this place for people living close by or work there for a quick lunch.

Best 5 spice chicken baguette I've had yet. Had one yesterday and today for lunch. Great homemade lemonade. And of course the coffee. Will be returning for sure.

There are so many things I love about Vancouver. Ultimately one of my favorite aspects is its cafe culture. Greenhorn is the essence of this evolving culture. What's so unique about this spot and a growing trend in cafe culture is heritage home cafe conversions in suburb areas. This is what greenhorn is. It's got such a unique homely community feel. Large enough to cater to its growing popularity with a wide variety of cozy and modern hipster seating. I love the special touch at the bag which has a record player for music lovers like myself!

its hard for me to judge a cafe since the main reason to go, coffee, isn't something i enjoy. finding a cafe that serves good food along with great coffee, at an affordable price, can be a challenge.

for a weekend brunch trip, we tried two quiches, the coconut rice pudding, eggs benny and the shakshuka. over all the mains were quite miniscule for the price they were charging.

though the bennies and shakshuka both had two eggs, they must have been size XS. expertly poached and plated quite prettily, neither was still quite flavorful or filling enough for me to pay the $12 again. the bread served with these two dishes, was perfect though.

the quiches were a good though a bit more cheese could have be used for the kale/goat cheese option. $7 wasn't a bad price for these muffin sized brunch starters.

overall. the food could have used a little bit more flavor and quantity. even after sharing the food, we were still hungry and its not like the bf and i are huge piggies to begin with.

the environment and the decor though were wonderful arty/industrial. this may be a great environment for coffee or some time with a friend but don't go for a meal/

My first visit at this coffee shop in downtown Vancouver. Great interior design. Great baked goods. Coffee was above average. I ordered a cappuccino, a regular latte and a latte with almond milk. All of them were great and tasted smooth except that they were not too hot.

A lot of students or young adults liked to stay at the cafe for a long time. Some were studying with their laptops and reading. It was hard to get a table or seats and enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. I would say "to go" for my coffee.

Greenhorn Espresso Cafe Vancouver located on a quiet corner of Nicola Street and Nelson. I was first attracted to this independent coffee shop because of its decor and record collection. Getting to Greenhorn coffee shop wasn’t exactly easiest with multiple one-way, no exit and the business of Vancouver downtown. But it was worth the inconvenience.

There are some really striking moments in our weekly Search for Vancouver’s Best Coffee. That’s when we hit upon a coffee shop that completely surprises us and sends a jolt into our caffeine-fueled systems – which is how we felt on this milestone Stop 20 of our coffee search. This is when we uncovered the hidden treasure called Greenhorn Espresso Bar.

We drive around, circling several minutes around the convoluted residential streets near the beachy West End – one way, dead end, cul-de-sac, bikes only. If you can locate parking that’s not reserved for local residents, you’ll find it’s worth your time (and tested patience) to experience this beautiful and unique café.

Always limited sits and they never clean tables, so get ready to do it yourself. Coffee is good. They should fix ventilation, stuffy. Six more letters.
One of my favorite hidden cafes in the West End! Their coffee is amazing and the service is above and beyond what you would expect of your standard cafe. Prices are a little high on the food but their baguettes are worth the dent in your wallet! If you're up for trying something new for breakfast, you should try their in-house made Coconut Black Rice Pudding (pictured).

Wonderful coffee. Great food. Friendly service. Wifi :)

Latte was phenomenal! The carrot cake had a very sweet icing, but was good otherwise. The decor I was nice, with some awesome art and photos on the wall that I enjoyed looking at. Im in love and will be coming back to try the sandwiches!

A Hidden Gem with a neighbourhood feel. A rustic interior with highlights of wood everywhere, saying this space is charming is a bit of an understatement. The Eggs benny is amazing, the hollandaise is one of the best I have ever tasted, sooooo buttery. ham was perfect as were the eggs. The Americano was spot on as well. Prices seem super cheap! until your food comes you see that it is relative to portion... None the less, great spot.

Delicious Veggie Burger. Delicious veggie burger- fresh and grilled nice and crispy. Perfect cappuccino. The cookie (Chocolate? Molasses?) was so-so. Nice atmosphere.

I usually don't tip much for counter service (5-10%) so I didn't appreciate the automatic 15, 20, or 25% options that came up on the debit machine. I felt forced to tip even though I had not received any service yet- except for the girl taking my order. When my order came up, my name was yelled and I had to get it myself. Now why would I be paying 25% for that?

What this neighbourhood needed!. This place is a great spot for meeting up with friends, studying and meeting other people in your neighbourhood. Owners are really friendly too! Prices are on the higher-end but the quality of the food is good. Altogether, solid spot.

First time yesterday. Great atmosphere and nice staff. Finally some food and gathering on Nicola. Thanks for being there.

One caveat. Easy on the salt! The soup, quiche and even scone were heavy with salt. Btw, where do you find croissants that small?
Coffee Lover
Greenhorn! You have some of the loveliest staff and lovely dainty meals. I feel it's a tad bit over priced, but people are willing to pay so meh, who cares about that.

The only thing that concerned me was the number of staff were on and how many were that useful.

I ordered an Americano to go at 10am. I received my coffee at 10:20am. Only after I had waited that long had one of your staff members offered to help the poor barista who was clearly overwhelmed. I appreciate the art of making artisan coffee, however the wait seemed crazy for what was received.

My 12oz coffee was in no way 12oz as it only took up half the cup.

You seemed to have had 6 people working yet I'm not sure how useful all of them were.

Perhaps a second barista, second machine or more functional coffee station is required.

I probably won't return for a coffee or lunch on the go, but certainly will return for an in dining experience. Perhaps I'll switch to a latte as those looked delicious and full to the brim.

A better behind the counter system maybe is in order for busier times.

These are the kinks with any new place. Love your front cashier, she's more than helpful, sweet and sincere.

Oh No..... One decaf coffee.
One chicken sandwich.
One wee (and I mean wee) salad.
$17.00

I never write reviews. I vote with my feet and go somewhere else: we have lots of choices, living in a big city... I was excited about Greenhorn: I read about it online in late December and thought, "Finally, a[nother] neighbourhood coffee place like Cardero Bottega, Mighty Oak, etc., that fills the void of the eclectic niche coffee shop but this time, in the West End..." Great.

Sadly, I am not buying it [again]. Anyone can be a critic: it's easy to tap and self-publish your like or, in this case, dis-like for something new and it's a known fact that people are more inclined to shout about the not-so-good, rather than the good.

Now that that is out of the way: Sticker shock is not something you associate with a café or bistro-style lunch. A pair of shoes, maybe.... a poorly thought-out shopping spree, yes. But a coffee and a sandwich? I was shocked, after ordering, to have to pay $17.00 for a regular decaf coffee and a roasted chicken sandwich (with the after-thought of-a-salad I was up-sold.) "I just had one!" said the girl at the till, "It was really good!"..... "I hope so." I replied. Yes, it was tasty, even though I bit into three olive pit remnants (I guess the harissa/ tapenade was house-made).
The coffee was good. Like lots of coffee here in Lotusland. The salad was fine too but that's about it... I mean, it. was. a. salad. But this place is way too expensive for it's own good. It will get better, I'm sure.

My .02 cents.

From the outside it blends in with the surrounding shops, but step inside and the high ceilings, massive red chandelier, distressed wood tables and stylish crowd scream Portland-cool. The light menu – handwritten on large rolls of brown paper – is classic with a twist: Belgian waffles with persimmon compote, sourdough grilled cheese with Emmental, oven-roasted tomatoes, basil and feta, plus baked goods including apricot pumpkin seed cookies. After lunch, grab a Moja coffee to go and pop up to the second floor for a peek at the shop’s art gallery featuring antique bicycle installations. On your way out, treat yourself to a bouquet of fresh flowers from the buckets displayed along the wall. Now that’s a one stop shop. —Lise Bouillard 994 Nicola St. Vancouver, 604-428

Let me start off by stating that I really, really wanted to like this neighbourhood cafe/espresso bar. When I first heard about Greenhorn Espresso Cafe, I was excited to see what it had to offer...

...quiche was really doughy, didn't get any brie at all, but there sure was a lot of ham and egg; soup flavor was really trace amts of curry, not much coconut flavor either

The latest hub for coffee addicts nearby, this neighborhood gem has been receiving quite the media attention lately, courtesy of Instagram. It’s a minimalistic space, pertaining a raw exquisiteness that is often exuded by most coffee shops as of late. Natural lighting and typical wood accents are what one can perceive stepping in. There is also a second floor located in the back, livened by vintage bicycles and quirky photos that compliment the neutral walls. It’s fit for those wishing to spend a little longer with their companions and to also escape the boisterous commotion in the front as a result of on the goers. Strangely, walking in, I wasn’t greeted with the smell of roasted coffee. As they do pride themselves as an espresso bar however, they must have some knowledge on what makes a good brew to achieve regulars already. The warm customer service and the rather wide selection of a menu will make this a local favorite in no time. Daily So

An interesting name with a bit of history behind it. Quaint little neighbourhood cafe located in the West End. See those love letters hanging? We were sort of in the area because we stopped by Michael's Flower shop to pick up a bouquet for I's birthday party. We wanted a quick snack and I remember reading about the Greenhorn Espresso Bar, they were featured in Vancitybuzz, and what intrigued me was that they had love letters on display written by their customers! I love it when cafes/shops include a bit of their customers into their business because it makes me feel like I belong with them. T, ordered a ice coffee and I had their latte. We both shared a croissant and a waffle and sat outside enjoying it. I love everything about the Greenhorn cafe - the inside with its wooden decor and the vases of flowers on the tables, reminds me of a love story in the making. I would love to visit again and try their lunch menu and the rest of their coffees. It's a perfect litt

A coffee shop by the neighbours for the neighbourhood. They take their coffee seriously and you can taste it.
