Review House Of Dosas - Vancouver

Salman K
Staff is friendly and the order comes out fairly fast. Their paneer Dosa is really good. Overall a good place to eat, however it might need a bit more cleanliness as there were several used napkins on the floor that looked like they were there for couple of hours.

Awesome service by Savio! He was very helpful and friendly. He recommended the crab curry which was one of their daily specials. It was yummy but a little hard/messy to eat. Probably wouldn’t reorder if I’m dining in. Loved their butter chicken and dosa. It was our first time trying dosas and Savio helped us pick a good one. All of us loved the naan that came with the curries, too. We would definitely come back to try their other dishes.

I've tried Indian foods before and known what to expect; but Sri Lankan foods was my first time ever. It's a bit different and less heavy and creamy like Indian foods, It's more suitable to my healthy diet. I love the right hotness and full of flavors- definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver that I'll go for my comfort foods. The staff and ambiance were great and the host was exceptionally treated us really well. Thank you for a lovely evening with so much great foods !

Only thing here is like was service. Food was Okissh. Ordered two different dishes and I would give them 3 out 5. My this review is only based on these two dishes and overall environment at that particular day and time

Nice, homey place to try dosas and south Indian food. They have quite a bit of vegetarian options on the menu. The dosa itself is soft, and the filling is very delicious. There’s also three other dipping sauces that come with it. It’s filling too. Will definitely try their other foods next time.

Very bad experience with the food We ordered a lamb dish and parathas, there was more fat and less meat in the curry and found a hair as well. Tried talking to chef and he was very rude about it. Front service was good though Never going back to this place ever.

I had their special of the day. Curry $11.99. It was pretty much the same as ordering dosa but it came with naan. Chai tea was was good.

Came here on a date with my husband and our seven year old tagged along. Our son had the mango juice which he liked but I think the mango lassi (yoghurt smoothie) would have been even tastier. My husband loved his paratha (flaky flat bread) with curry sauce. The chicken curry sauce was so yummy, kinda sweet. I had the seafood dosa (indian style crepe that's huge and often rolled with a filling inside. It was ok. A bit too calamari for me, but I'm sure the other dosas would have been great. Warning that somehow the filling in dosas often are super spicy, more spicy than the usual curries. They had cricket games playing on the TVs. I don't know anything about cricket but it looked interesting. Waitress was super nice. Will come again on a Monday when all dosas are only $5.99!

Super busy and super tasty. After the delicious appetizers got inhaled my mixed seafood dosa arrived. Light and airy with spicy filling and 2 spreads which added a whole level of richness to the deliciousness. Supposedly had fish, shrimp and other seafood in the potato and dal filling but it seemed to be missing in action. One person beside me had lots of chicken in her dosa while the guy beside her had almost no chicken at all though they ordered the same thing. Shared the best fresh gulab jamun I ever ate, topped with coconut (and I've had a lot over the years). Deep fried balls soaked in syrup can be a bit sweet overwhelming but so yum. I look forward to returning and trying another kind of dosa.

Was recommended this place by my friend while I was visiting Vancouver and it exceeded my expectations! Not only were the dosas amazing, but I ordered the Butter Paneer Masala and it was the best one I've ever had, it was very flavourful and authentic, and the Paratha was amazing! The staff were very friendly and recommended places to visit in Vancouver. The owner was very friendly and provided amazing service. I would definitely recommend House of Dosas for anyone looking for authentic Indian Food.

Delicious food! I had the masala dosa. Golden crispy crepe with potato filling. They customized my potato filling to my liking with some added spice. If there's one thing that makes them so authentically South Asian, it's the hospitality. The staff are so friendly and accommodating.

Went on a Monday night and discovered their $5.99 dosa special. All evening there was a lineup out the door. This is the best meal deal in town. My palak paneer dosa was delicious and their chai is heavenly on a cold day!

Ordered the lamb dosa today and it was delicious. I would like to go and try some of the other dishes for sure with a few friends so we can share and have a taste of the other menu items.

Friendly helpful staff. Made us feel welcome. Explained that i couldn't have anything to spicy. They recommend what i had was just DELICIOUS. When next i visit my daughter we'll definitely go back.

Happened to be run by our friend. Even though I have a lot of good things to say, I recommend you to go, eat and make your judgement!

One of the most delicious food I've ever tried. They are super busy on Mondays, but still gave us wonderful service! I'd like to give 6 stars!!

Back in the capable and loving hands of Raj and Marjorie, newly renovated, and just as delicious as ever! Healthy, gluten-free South Indian cuisines right here in Vancouver.

Amazing food, very clean newly refurbished restaurant, very good service where even the owner is present in the restaurant, and interacts with you to explain the culture behind the dishes being served. I enjoyed watching India playing cricket on TV. I highly recommend House of Dosas.

We ordered gunpowder dosa and madras dosa (both chef’s special). Both were accompanied by tomato chutney, coconut chutney, sambhar, vada and idli. The portion size were large and food was fresh and served hot. The good thing about the place is it’s open late nights. In terms of taste the food was average as I have had better dosa’s in past. But I would like to go back and try something else.

This is an amazing place whenever you crave for great dravadian delights! I simply loved the “gobhi 65” its a must try! Great starter, very crispy, a very good options for all the vegetarians! It was served with chilly dip and had a fusion flavour of indo chinese food. <br/>Uttapam was equally good, sambar was just perfect with the blend of spices, sourness, and that signature aroma.. <br/>At a very low price u can get amazing dosas(crepes with potato filling) served with great sambar and delicious coconut chutney! <br/>Mondays are the best time to go there for dinner as they have special deals on this day.

Stumbled upon this place by accident and were surprisingly pleased with what was on offer. The variety in their menu struck us and their daily specials looked enticing as well.<br/><br/>We started with the basic idli, vada and plain dosa. The food was excellent and quite tasty, relative to the standards back in India. It was nostalgic to experience the Limca soft drink experience here.<br/><br/>For the main course, we decided to go with the crab curry special that day. It was served along with rice, a special type of bread (malabari paratha) and the gravy was damn delicious.<br/><br/>Service was fast. Staff were courteous and willing to help. Ambience was minimalistic and the focus was firmly on making it a memorable experience for their guests through their food. Highly recommended for authentic South I dian and Sri Lankan cuisine without burning a hole in your pocket.<br/><br/>Food: 5/5<br/>Service: 4.5/5<br/>Ambience: 3.5/5<br/>Value: 5/5

I think this is a great place for Indian food and it has become a spot for Indians to hangout .. and most importantly it is open till 3 in the morning.

I got the special on Tuesday which was any koutho roti for $9.99. I got the lamb. I never are this dish before. Texture was OK. Flavour was ok. Portion was good. Nothing too special.<br/><br/>I disagree with the 4+ rating.

Great Dosas with many varieties for both vegetarian & non-vegetarian. They have a special on Monday night . All dosas is $5.99! Your opportunity to try other dosas that you want. They have variations of spicy that you can choose from. Service is good & staff is friendly & helpful. The dosas are nice, hot & crispy when they come out.

2.7. The quality of food has slipped over the last couple of years. When we went they seemed to be understaffed as there were only two servers for the entire restaurant. They were very friendly, but it took awhile to get to us which was expected. We had gone back a couple of times, but unless things start to change we will not be returning.

What a fantastic place for dosas, they’re also open later than most restaurants and they have the most yummiest South Indian food I have tried! So much to choose from and each dish, each preparation tastier than the last. Love it, can’t wait to go back!

Ordered delivery from here 3 times. It is inconsistent. Usually get the chicken biryani. Some days, there is a very generous portion of chicken meat while others times there aren't. I also didn't get an egg in the biryani before. The naan bread is very delicious and so are their dipping sauces. I wish they would be more consistent though, which is why I'm giving them 3 stars!

It's seems like a small family run place. We ordered chicken 65, a lamb dosa and a fish vindaloo dosa. They asked us how spicy we wanted and we told them very spicy. The chicken 65 was well fried and the chicken was tender but it was not really chicken 65, the chicken 65 is always tossed in ginger garlic- curry leaf based- masala which this one was not. <br/>Anyways the biggest disappointment turned out to be the Dosas. The Dosas were really below average. We used to get better dosa at our college mess compared to this. First everything was missing salt, two other people asked for salt so it was not just us. The sambar, if you could call it that, was just flavored water. The chutneys were just meh. The lamb dosa had tons and tons of potatoes with few small bits of tough lamb mixed in. You could feed that seafood dosa to a vegetarian and he would never guess that they had fish cuz the fish was blended in with the potatoes If we didn't know that we ordered seafood vindaloo dosa we would have never guessed cuz you couldn't tell fish apart from all the potatoes. Also vindaloo is a very spicy vinegar based curry which this was not. The potatoes mix for both the Dosas tasted same (just like mashed potatoes) . We asked for spicy but everything was just plain bland. <br/><br/>I guess this place is more for non Indian people who have never had a good dosa before, but as an Indian this is a average dosa at best. Having said that it is cheap and affordable and tastes ok so if you like cheap filling food then you can try this.

I’ve only had dosas twice before, so I am not a dosa expert, but I do know tasty. The dosa was crisp and light. The fillings savoury, flavourful and fresh. The coconut based condiments refreshing. The staff was efficient and friendly. Our food came quickly, but we did not feel rushed. We has the eggplant and cauliflower/potato; both delish. I would go back again and again and again. Hope you like it too.

Great food. I got the experience of having my food, straight from my grandmother’s kitchen. The pure authentic South Indian food in the city of Vancouver. The kind of service here is really very good. The restaurant staffs over here, keep their customers happy and satisfied. Special thanks to Wasam and Shilpa, they are one of the staffs in this restaurant. Their service and approach are par excellence, no more words to say about them. House of dosas is totally meant for its food and hospitality.

I've been to this restaurant many times over the last few years and I've only had great experiences. Everything I've ordered has been hot, fresh tasting, and well seasoned, both when dining in, and when taking out. A must-order dish is the fish pakora; lightly coated white fish accompanied with the most delicious spicy, slightly vinegary sauce to dip. The staff are always very friendly, courteous, and you can really tell that they're trying to make your meal as enjoyable as possible. The dining space itself is very clean and feels warm and homey. I can't say enough good things about House of Dosas. It's the perfect place to enjoy an affordable (but awesome) meal!

We ordered chicken dosa, medu vadai and chicken biryani here on our visit today. It was very crowded, and there was a long queue of people waiting. Luckily a table for two was there and we got it. The food was served pretty quickly despite being so crowded.<br/><br/>The food was decent, the chicken dosa could have been crisper on the outside, and the chicken masala inside wasn't up to the mark. It had a bland taste, no salt or no spice. Medu vadai was decent, it was not at all crispy on the outside as it should be. The sambar and the chutney was okayish too, can be improved a lot I felt.<br/><br/>Only saving grace was the spicy chicken biryani, which was yummy, the chicken pieces were succulent, tender and moist. The rice was beautifully mixed with the spices, and the chicken. The additional curry and the raita that was served with biryani age adds flavor to the dish. <br/><br/>Overall 2 for the efforts / service and the ambience + 0.5 for the chicken biryani<br/><br/><br/>Edit: I found it’s good to visit these place when it’s less crowded.i ordered rava dosa and veg pakora this time which was quite good to what I ate last time. So I am changing the rating to 4.

UPDATE:<br/>After a pretty rough experience at the restaurant earlier this week, where issues in the kitchen resulted in some extreme delays (scroll below to my original review for details), I received a message from the owner apologizing for the bad experience and inviting me back to the restaurant for a complimentary meal. I took him up on that offer, and returned to the restaurant for lunch on Wednesday. Since I've already had their famous dosas during my previous visit, I wanted to try something else off of their menu, and ordered the Chicken Biryani (details on the dish below). The dish was delicious (and they are serious when it comes to heat), as was the dosa that I had tried earlier in the week. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. What really got me though was the owner's graciousness and dedication to his customers. Following this visit, my perception of this restaurant has completely done a 180. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for good Indian food, especially if you enjoy heat.<br/><br/>Chicken Biryani ($13.99):<br/>4.5/5<br/>This is the first time that I've actually had biryani before, and I've got to say, if all restaurants had biryani like this, then I really should order this dish more often. I really liked the basmati rice, which was a bit firmer and had more texture than the type of rice that I'm accustomed to. It was filled with various herbs and spices, and was very flavourful and fragrant. There was a generous amount of juicy, boneless chicken (I'm delighted by the fact that they use dark meat) that was well-seasoned and very flavourful, and also a small whole egg. Now, you get to choose the spice level for your dish. I initially requested the dish to be as spicy as possible, but chickened out (no pun intended) and asked for the 2nd highest level of spice instead. I had seriously dodged a bullet: the dish at the 2nd highest level of spice was already seriously HOT. In most restaurants when I ask for my food to be spicy, I usually get something that's just mildly tingly; here, I was actually tearing up and had to drink a lot of water and also use the raitha that they served the dish with to numb the pain (I wouldn't have been able to handle the highest level). They seriously don't pull any punches here, and I'm impressed. <br/><br/>Original Review:<br/>I really don't like writing negative reviews, but I've honestly had the worst dining experience in recent memory at this restaurant. I visited the place on a Monday, which is when they have a special where all of their dosas and uthappams were priced at only $5.99. Unable to resist such a great deal, I decided to order two dosas: their Meat & Mixed Vegetable Dosa (with chicken) and their Cheese Garlic Uthappam. The food took OVER ONE HOUR to arrive. I'm not exaggerating: I ordered before 1:30 pm, and it was well past 2:30 by the time my dosas arrived. I've never walked out of a restaurant before, but I seriously came close. I have no idea what happened, whether this was just a rare, unfortunate misshap or something common to this restaurant, but I was seriously ticked off. <br/><br/>The food, when it did finally arrive, did taste pretty good (details below), but honestly at that point anything probably would taste good to me. Although the staff members at the front of the house were relatively friendly and kept my water glass filled, and the prices are an absolute steal on Mondays, I'm seriously quite put off by my experience and will not be returning any time soon.<br/><br/>Meat & Mixed Vegetables Dosa (Chicken, $5.99 on Mondays):<br/>4/5<br/>This consisted of a long, thin crepe enclosing a filling of potatoes, peas, carrots (and some other vegetables) and chicken, and was served with three separate chutneys. The crepe was soft, slightly chewy, and quite tasty on its own when dipped into chutney (my favourite is the red one). There was a generous amount of filling, which was also very tasty: the food was well seasoned, with a slight bit of heat, and the pieces of chicken were very tender and moist.<br/><br/>Cheese Garlic Uthappam ($5.99 on Mondays):<br/>3/5<br/>This is an Indian-style pizza that's topped with garlic and cheese. Unlike Western pizzas, the crust was more fluffy and tender than doughy. I was quite surprised by the amount of garlic that was present; there were large pieces covering the entire top of the pizza, and the flavour did become a bit overpowering. I would have preferred more cheese (you can never have enough cheese) and a bit less garlic.

Service time: 40 Minutes for just plain dosa & 50 minutes for other dosas<br/><br/>Taste: Tasteless - no salt or spice.<br/>I had the paneer masala dosa. It was literally the potato filling with pieces of paneer and raw onions. The raw onions might actually have been the better part.<br/><br/>The paneer 65 was also bland and red - I am saying fluorescent. (See picture) <br/><br/>Ps. This was during a rather busy day.<br/><br/>Rather save yourself some time and walk a little further to some place else.

Open till late so that's a good advantage..their curry and rice combo is a good deal..found the the stuffing in the lamb vindaloo dosa really salty...

We are never afraid to try something new, and at the excited recommendation of friends we followed eagerly. Described as "Curries folded into crepes" is an understatement, but without a better choice of words to describe what a dosa is, this savoury experience should be done in person, not decided on a lack of a choice of better words. <br/>I ordered the fish vindaloo, and my wife ordered lamb vindaloo. Our friends ordered spinach and cheese dosa and the other was beef curry with onion dosa. Although all were excellent, the onion dosa pushed it beyond good into the realms of excellent.<br/>The dosa (crepes) are impressive and are beautiful as much as they are delicious. I enjoy quality more than quantity as long as the price stays within a reasonable budget. When we finished, we all had our fill and were impressed with the service; which was happy and prompt throughout, thus worth every dollar.<br/>If I had any complaints, it was with the lack of bigger pieces of fish in my vindaloo although I still found it to be tasty. The other issue was with the spinach and cheese dosa. Again it was tasty, the cheese used didn't seem to be very authentic. Paneer (or something similar) was expected, but it appeared to be cheddar (or something similar). However because this was my first time eating dosa, I could be wrong in the assumption that our expectations were correct.<br/>Will we return, YES. Our experience will be remembered and we want to build on those memories.

'House of Dosa' a name which stands its value. If you are in live with this particular dish, you will find a variety in this place. We need to wait for 10 mins as it was crowded. It is better if if you have a reservation. Food quality is really good and value for money. Their biriyani preparation was brilliant.

I don't usually write reviews about restaurants, but I was so upset with this restaurant that I felt the need to tell other wishing to dine in there. My friend and I had went to enjoy a good dinner from this place since we've heard many good things about this place but our experience turned out the complete opposite to what expected. We got seated in a long table setting (with little tables connected to eachother), so we had one of the little tables to ourselves. Others that were sat next to us were literally so close we were touching elbow to elbow. It was so awkward. We had ordered two appetizers (the masala dosa and idly) and then 2 Lassi (mango lassi and sweet lassi) as well as our main dishes to come after the appetizers. We were seated before the other two couples sitting next to us and they had gotten their drinks and utensils before we had. We obviously understood it was a rush and kindly let them know we were waiting on our drinks as well. Later, both the tables got their appetizers and we were just here patiently waiting for our own, because we aren't the type to bug the waiters while they're working. I myself work in a restaurant and was more patient because of how I've experienced busy days. It was a busy day, but they were plopping people anywhere they could find a place so they could give them cold food and shitty service and then expect tips in the end. Going back to our dinner, we finally received 1 out of the 2 appetizers and I had also asked the waiter if the other one was one its way as it had already been 25 minutes for us just waiting on our appetizers. She had assured me it was coming soon so we decided to wait for its arrival before we start eating, since I didn't want to be rude and start eating before the person I had came with had gotten their appetizer. It was 10 minutes already waiting for the second appetizer so we ended up sharing the one that we had in front of us. At this point we've been waiting 35 minutes for the second appetizer and we were quite annoyed that it hadn't come and neither did our Lassi drinks that we had ordered. The waiters came by with our main dishes and we were confused as to why the second appetizer hadn't come. One of the waiters told me that they could "leave the food in the kitchen until our appetizer comes" and this is where they were exceeding my tolerance. I told the waiter that we've been waiting 35 minutes for our drinks and an appetizer and we'd just take the food for now. They gave us our drinks in the middle of us almost having finished dinner and then the manager came with the dosa and said it would be on the house. We were not looking for free food, just getting our food on time would've been nicer than watching the people next to us eat and leave already. The manager tried putting it on our table but there was no room for the dosa whatsoever and he slid it on to the table next to us, who were very upset themselves as they had no room for their dishes either. When the table had left, the waiter came to clean the table and took our utensils along with theirs and had mixed our water glasses so we had to get new glasses(which took 5 mins to reach us). We had asked for two more roti which came to us in 15 minutes. This was absolutely the worst service I have EVER had. When it came time to leave, we asked for the bill and the waiter (who was rather rude and impatient) told us to go to the front, and I had said that I would just like to see it and he said go to the front. No manners and no etiquette. We went the front and when we got the bill, the dosa that was supposed to be on the house was still on the bill, and then I had to verbally explain to the cashier that their manager had put it on the house. When he heard it, he was giving so much attitude towards my friend and I. I did not feel the need to tip as the service was terrible, very terrible. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

I rarely ever go out for Indian food but I've heard so many things about House of Dosas that I just had to try it! I've never had a dosa before but I'm quite the crepe lover so I knew that I would love it. They had so many varieties to choose from that I had trouble settling on one because they had so many vegetarian options but I finally decided to go with  the masala dosa which was filled with a flavorful, spicy potato mixture. It also came with a few dips to go with it. I would definitely come back and now that I know about their $6 Monday special? Definitely coming back on Monday next time!

Bad service. Huge cold paneer pieces in paneer dosa. Sambhar was like water. Undercooked dosa. Bland chutneys. Not a good experience. Never going back.

If you ever need a reason to look forward to Mondays, plan a trip to House of Dosas. During their Monday special, you can get any of the dosas on their menu for $5.99. My favourite is the palak paneer which is a cheese and spinach mixture. I don't think I enjoy paneer anywhere else as I do here. If you're completely new to dosas, you'll probably be amazed by the fact the crepe is longer than your plate! I like bringing newbies here just to see their shocked faces. Whichever filling you end up picking (and there are a lot of options), the fillings are always fresh tasting and warm. We also learned that their Uthappams (Indian version of a pizza) were included in the Monday Special. We tried the "401 Uthappam" and it was amazingly filled with rich flavor. New fave! Service is a bit slow even when there are little to no patrons in the restaurant... so bring good company and your patience.

We love this place. It's cheap and delicious. They have the best roti ever. Just came back and it was great. The staff are super nice and helpful.

House of Dosas is one Vancouver restaurant that is known for great late night eats and for being budget-friendly.  They have been around for quite sometime now as their Yelp reviews date back to 2008.  On Zomato, they are ranked within the top 3 most popular restaurants in the Kensington area.  I had heard about their Monday special where all dosas are $5.99; this has been offered for many years now since the early days of the restaurant.  Earlier this week, I made my to House of Dosas to indulge in their Monday special.

I don't know what the 65 is in "chicken 65", but is it ever delicious! I'm salivating just thinking about it. Spicy tender pieces of chicken come served with a sweet dipper.<br/>The dosas are light and crisp, you pick your filling with whatever you're feeling: different stews, vegetarian. The Chutneys are also great, my favourite was the coconut

This place has a deal of $6 for any dosa on Monday. And honestly, Mondays are the ONLY days I visit this place, but it's like EVERY Monday. My friends from Brazil and Jordan have grew a great liking to this place and being near to heir place, we go there almost every Monday. And after trying out different dosas, we all have settled on Cheese Pakal Dosa finally. Same order, every time... Service is good too, albeit a bit slow.<br/><br/>Food - 4.5/5<br/><br/>Service - 4/5 <br/>Ambiance - 3.5/5 <br/>Value for money - 4.5/5<br/><br/>Do visit on a Monday!

No doubts, the food is really good and a decent place where we can go eat midnight. But the last few incidents which happened in the past, I would like to share one of them. <br/>So what happened we called the restaurant at around 11pm and asked if they're open , which they replied they were open till 2am. We went there at 12:45 and they were like we're closed. Either don't give your words or manage how to run a business. We specially drove for 40kms to have it but they turned it down. And plus they never apologized for this and Again when it comes to customer satisfaction, staff is pathetic. They need to improve on it. Total waste of time.

J, P, S, and I came to the House of Dosas for a catch up dinner on a random weekday, after maybe a year of not seeing each other together. We ordered an appetizer and we each got our own dosa. What is a dosa? My description would be a thick, crispy crepe-like wrap filled with potatoes and meat. Paper Masala with the meat filling
Naoki_art
It's as good as people say. Their dosa is light, crispy and a perfect accompaniment to the stewed filling, in my case, the lamb vindaloo. The chutneys are delicious especially the red chutney which also provided the perfect amount of heat. Pakoras were well seasoned and spiced, crispy and light, and not at all greasy. Super friendly and fast service.
Morgan Jeane
Waited more than 70 minutes for our food, it was very busy but 70 minutes is absolutely unacceptable. Owner rudely forced us to sit back down when we were going to walk out after an hour of waiting.
Heat Freak
One dark (and decidedly unstormy ) night, I found myself at one of my usual late night haunts again – House of Dosas. We started off with the Paneer 65. Paneer 65 looks pretty angry with its vivid deep orange color. Unfortunately, the heat is hardly anything like that. Comprehensive House of Dosas review with extensive pictures and ratings on my blog mentioned in my profile.<br/><br/>While the Paneer 65 somewhat spicy, the heat is mostly missing. That does not mean it’s not tasty though. Moving on to the dosas, the visual highlight of the meal was the Chicken Masala paper dosa that my dining partner had ordered. Nearly two feet long, the dosa was longer than my arm! <br/><br/>My dosa was somewhat bland and despite the addition of hot peppers, was sorely lacking the heat that I craved. Same was the story with the Sambar – very watery and bland, it was totally not the thick, flavorful and most importantly spicy sambar that I look forward when I have South Indian food.
Titus Pullo
I've been to this place twice, first time without incident. After visiting India this year, I've been spoiled by 40 rupee dosas. However, the portions here are North-American huge. The food is tasty, and authentic. However, what was also authentic, was my stomach pain after my most recent visit. <br/><br/>The shrimp dosa turned my stomach into a House of Sadness for three days. It wasn't violent, but instead rather beckoning and mildly crippling. I was riddled with the kind of sadness that leads one to abandon teammates in DOTA mid-game. I might visit again if I gather the courage.

Come on Zomato help me rate them a 1000.<br/><br/>When I was living in South Surrey, I would drive all the way with my cousins to House Of Dosas to satisfy our foodie souls.<br/><br/>The owner is a gem of a person. Handles business with love and affection. Knows his regular clientele and his staff is very loyal to him.<br/><br/>When I moved to 53rd and Knight, it was like a honeymoon because I was so close to the location lol. Hop on the bus with my roomie and head there to eat. The fact that they're open till late is another impressive rate worthy point.<br/><br/>Because I'm half south Indian and was away from mom's home made Dosas and idli for 5.5 years, House Of Dosas made me feel at home. Their dosas are bad ass and you cannot have only 1. They also have days where they have a discount on Dosas and those are the days we as students would look out for haha.<br/><br/>Lovely service, amazing food and easy on the wallet. What else do you want?<br/><br/>My favorite Chicken Dosa 😆<br/><br/>Can't wait to come back to Vancouver :)

came here to meet friends and i have no experience much on dosas, bread with meat or something like that but indian cuisine generally have lots of spices from what i remember and at the end of the meal i'm always overwhelemed by the spices that i'm eating the same dishes even though they mentioned it's different spices. so then, ordered a few dosas, and each of them even though does have a different flavour but at the end i still can tell the difference and differentiate from one to another. :0 each dishes have it's own strong flavour i must say. but each are still good on it's own as well. i guess any of the dishes that i will pick most likely i'll like it. the fried chicken is definitely good as well.

These guys are great, they are great with kids and have a great attitude whenever we come. Food is fantastic, hands down one of the very best in Vancouver

Dosa's are great, but not here! I got food poisoning so bad from the seafood dosa, I was sick for 2 days. When I went back to tell them, nobody at the restaurant cared! Years later, I returned with a friend...they messed up my order...which was already late and my friend had finished his food before I even got mine. Nobody apologized or cared. This place is packed because the food is cheap...cheaply made! Bunch of young locals saving a buck. Trust me, it's not worth it!

So went there to grab the Monday 50% off offer. We were 5 people so decided to order different dosas. Among all the dosas we only liked the gun powder masala dosa. Other dosas just had a different stuffing which was not that great.
Lower Mainland Muncher
Great hours! It's perfect for my late appetite. Their butter chicken is absolutely delicious. Portions are great to share. I tried their spinach and cheese dosa which came with a couple sauces that went very well with it. The service was very good both times I've ever eaten here.

I've bookmarked this place for years now and I finally got to check it out on Dosa Mondays! Hooray for $5.99 dosas! After reading many reviews, I decided on the palak paneer dosa (spinach and paneer) and chicken 65, and I'm so glad I did! The dosa crepe was nice and crispy. The spinach filling was delicious when topped with the spicy, red sauce provided on the side. Service was attentive even though there was only one person working in the front of the house and the place was packed! Kudos to that guy! Highly recommended!<br/><br/>

We decided to get take out from House of Dosas because we had heard good things about their food but bad things about their service. The place looked busy even at 5:30pm. We may go back, but it wouldn't be a priority. We'd recommend it for people looking for Sri Lankan food and definitely try some dosas.

Excellent food. The Dosa's were crispy and the Chutney's were pretty good too. Reasonably priced and good service. Will definitely be going back !
Lucky
Dosa was very good. Had podi dosa and uthappam. But for other stuffs like chutneys, sambhar, vada etc. Don't expect south indian taste. Not excellent, but good. Hospitality is great.
Kabir
Excellent food, and I love the fact that their plates look like plantain leaves. Not quite the real thing, of course, but it's the next best thing. And their weekday specials are amazing, as well! Definitely recommended...

Inhospitable staff in hospitality business !<br/><br/>Sorry to begin on a negative note but it needs to be emphasized that the service and attitude of the serving staff needs major renovations here. C'mon guys please buck up on this front because the food you serve is fairly good but kindly remember that yours is not the only place serving what you serve and there's enough competition around so here's hoping that you do realize the importance of being courteous and don't take your patrons for granted.<br/><br/>Coming to the ambience, its fairly basic and the seating alright. Don't think I need to mention anything more on the service.<br/><br/>Some of the good items I have had here are Chicken 65, chicken vindaloo dosa (spicy), masala dosa and the chicken biryani was good as well.<br/><br/>If I had to just rate on the food I would have definitely rated them at least 4/5 because the dosas are very tasty and the accompanying sambhar tastes fairly authentic. Haven't had too many dosas of this quality in Vancouver so a big thumbs up for the cooking staff.<br/><br/>I wish only if the front staff and a young fellow at the counter were doing their job as seriously as their cooks then it would just have been a perfect combination.<br/><br/>If you could neglect the rather indifferent attitude of folks all around then its definitely a value for your money place and huge thumbs up for the taste and authenticity of the cuisine!

I have heard a lot about the restaurant but it didn't stand to my expectations. Nobody greeted us when we entered the restaurant. The food is good here but the service is really bad. The person who gives the bill was not friendly at all, I asked him for menu card but he didn't bring it after few minutes I again asked him that too thrice but he doesn't seems to be caring about it and neither acknowledged finally we got up having dosa only :( wanted to order lassi but he hardly bothered. When I complained about this to him while paying the bill he said sorry out of formality which I felt was rude. The other person who serves the food was really very good. <br/><br/>I would give 4 out of 5 for the food and 1 out of 5 for the service.<br/><br/>Highly unexpected service!!!

Great Dosas ,,, better in taste and variety than that I got to have in India. Very creative mix of South Indian and Sri Lankan delight :) cheers to Raj for the great Hospitality :)

My boyfriend and I heard great things about this restaurant and we were pretty excited to try out it out. We walked in but nobody greeted us but understandable since it was quite busy at the time. We were seated and ordered the chicken65 which was really good and the texture was perfect! However I was disappointed in the chicken nando. The@ stuffing was too sweet and cold. The service was okay, wasn't that good. I would come back to try some other menu items but not anytime soon.

Surprisingly their chicken biryani is very good, it's made with the correct balance of masalas and well cooked chicken - served with gravy and yogurt.

Guys. There is a dosa place in Vancouver that might, for real, give some serious competition to dosa from India. The best way to explain what dosa is, if you've never had it, is to call it a savory crepe. It doesn't do it justice, sure, but maybe gets the idea across. It's crispy, it's savory, comes with a soft spicy filling, and an assortment of dips (chutneys).<br/><br/>I have tried their chicken dosa - safest option there, hard to go wrong with chicken - and the shrimp dosa - tastes very similar to the chicken dosa, only with shrimp instead of chicken. Everything else pretty much stays the same. I'd recommend both of them. Their dosas are pretty huge; I'd find it hard to finish one all by myself even on a good day.<br/>I'd also strongly recommend the chicken 65. Great stuff!<br/><br/>Pro Tip #1: Go on a Monday. They have $5.99 dosas on Monday. If Garfield knew, he wouldn't be hating on Mondays that much.<br/>Pro Tip #2: It gets ENORMOUSLY crowded on Monday evenings. And they don't take reservation. So what's a girl to do? Go there with a book or two, put your name on the list, sit down and enjoy the book(s) while you wait for them to call your name.<br/>Pro Tip #3: On days when you feel like having a bit of fun, try their paper dosa. It's gigantic. Go with an appetite.

If you have had good or even decent South Indian food before, this experience will be a major let down. Meat items are mediocre at best, if you have to go there, stick to veg. The food deserves a 3 at best but the service was horrible and impolite. I went on a Monday when they have dosa specials, we had to get up and go to the counter to ask for menus as we were simply being ignored... they seemed understaffed for the day. As for the dosa: a crucial thing that makes a dosa good is how fresh it is off the pan and I can't believe our dosa wasn't even hot and felt more like 'papar' which ruins the whole point of having dosa (the filling though was still hot). We ordered dessert (gulab jamun and ice cream) which takes very little time to prepare (assuming it's prepared fresh) and did not get served for 20 minutes... we didn't have that much time and decided to pay the bill w/o waiting for dessert. This seemed to have annoyed the server (who also seemed to be the owner), who had clearly forgotten to place the order for our dessert. Rather than apologizing or making up for it, he was outrightly rude. In a city where most Indian restaurant owners treat their customers as guests in their homes, this was disappointing and surely our last time here.

Classic! If you have not heard of or eaten a Dosa, you have not experience the complexity of India and savoured a distinguished part of it's countries cuisine. From the South primarily, this interestingly delicious wrap type food is both filling, delectable and extremely reasonable. Open late so mix up up and try a Dosa!

Great food. My favorite appy would be the manchurian chicken. Great place to watch a cricket game over a cold beer too.

I haven’t really been excited about the food selection around here since I got back from New York, but I started out this meal with a very loud, “MMMMMM!,” and kept it up through the entire meal until I’m sure my dining companions were irritated with me. It was impossible to stop but at least we were so full after the dosas that there was no chance of dessert.

House of Dosas (Knights Street and Kingsway), is another restaurant we frequent regularly. The ambiance is nothing to scream about and the service is often slow
Michael Kwan
"While it is true that you’ll find biryani and curry on the menu, it is perhaps more accurate to say that House of Dosas is a Sri Lankan restaurant specializing in the dosa. A dosa is similar in many ways to a French crepe, but you get a crispier texture and the filling is completely different."<br/><br/>Check the comment below for a link to the full written review.

House of Dosas is a gem!. I went to the House of Dosas on my birthday, and they treated us SO well. In addition to fantastic food, the service was awesome, the waiters were lovely, and the ambiance was vibrant. A fantastic place for a meal on any day, any occasion.
Looking For A Michelin In Vancouver
Good food. Somewhat a dive, poor decoration ,corner of a busy road, strange cricket on TV, but with very good food. Not only Dosa's but all the food. We always have the fried chicken, probably one of the best in Vancouver. Also good juices, more from Sri Lanka than India
Shussai5
Great dosas. Great masala dosa :)

Eat here!. Service is spotty, nonetheless, the most bang for your buck! Fast! Unrivaled flavour! Love it! I don't normally use exclamation points!
Rca.verma
Dosa just like ones you find in India. Went there around 2 am. And it was full of white people, mostly hipsters. <br/>Ambience was good, they were playing cricket on tv.<br/>Service was fast.<br/><br/>After reading all the good reviews I went there in hope that I would find some good Indian food in vancouver all the other places sell tomato pure with curry powder and call it Indian cuisine. <br/><br/>I ordered chicken vindaloo dosa and palak paneer cheese dosa. And we were served with our order in less than 5 minutes which by any standard is blazig fast. Dosas athough were a little cold to my liking and sambar was a much thicker than you find in India.<br/><br/>But that being said dosas tasted AMAZING!. Chicken vindaloo was a bit on the sour side but palak paneer dosa was on point.<br/><br/>Their chutneys were very flavour full with a good amount of coconut texture.<br/><br/>Luckily I went there on monday when all their dosas are $5.99! That is dirt cheap. Their regular prices are $10-13. <br/>I also asked for some extra sambar which they happily served with lots of extra chutney<br/><br/>One thing i really disliked was that they dont give tips to their waiters, all the tips go into the managers pocket. So make sure you tell the manager that this tip is for the staff not him.

Taste less now a days. Worst service, Taste less,They should improve their quality soon .Otherwise they are going to be out of business soon.

Dosa was good but panner dosa included just the paneers added in potato curry that usually comes with masala dosa !!
Cw
Home made cooking. The appetizer we ordered came fresh and hot out of the deep frier. The cheese & spinach dosa was delicious, and the mango lassi was rich and fruity. The server was super nice and courteous. One thing I would change is perhaps making the dhals less salty, but that's minor in the grand scheme of everything.

Favourite indian restaurant!. The uniqueness of the Dosa and the quality of the food here is just great. I always go with a meat dosa typically a lamb vindaloo because lamb has a distinct flavour! the Chicken korma is always a MUST have here as well. The nuttiness of their korma curry is just right with a delicious sweet aroma. Its served with basmati rice as well as some delicious roti. <br/><br/>Every dish comes with a variety of coconut chutney dippi<br/><br/>As for service, the people always greet me as for I am a regular. I feel welcomed entering the restaurant all the time.

Delicious Dosa - Open 24 Hrs. Pros: tasty, good portions, good quality, lamb vindaloo dosa, eggplant dosa, get the "paper dosa" which is just an XXL dosa!<br/><br/>Cons: ugly bathroom
Saira Musharaf
Very poor service , we reached there with a wheel chair member. They told us that it is 15 minutes wait , but they accommodated 3 groups bigger than us who came after us ,by telling they will give us a good table after 45 min at the end of the resturant where wheel chair reached with great difficulty .

Worst South Indian food. It is the worst south Indian food I ever had in a restaurant. Dosas and the fillings are tasteless. The chutney is too bad. Service was crappy.

Good value on mondays!!. I enjoy coming here mainly on mondays cus they have dosas for $6.. it gets crazy in here onmondays u have been warned!! whenever ive been here on a monday always a long line up... also used to enjoy coming here after clubbing or bar hopping when it was 24 hours noe I think its oprn till 3 am which is still pretty good!!<br/><br/>I usually get the matter paneer (peas and cheese) dosa or the mixed veggie dosa.. heard that the eggplant dosa is good too. ive always been pleased eith the food they make it fresh just wish the dosa filling had more spice.. I love the chutneys that go with it delicious and homemade... really good portio. for $6 mondays. dont usually have the sambal (sp?) (the soup ljke stuff) that comes with it I find it a bit too exotic for my likiing cus im not sure what veggies and stuff are in it!! <br/><br/>also had the south indian doughnuts think they're called valdas or something its an appetizee and I fiund them pretty boring..<br/>had the veggie pakora which is mediocre to good but the tamarind chutney for the pakoraa was delicious<br/><br/>the papadum is the best ive had before<br/><br/>ive had the curry here too before with rice<br/>. let me tell u when I ordered it hot it was so hot I could barely eat iy<br/>. theres one other restaurant ive had this happen at in my life I can usually handle spice.. like I always order my food hot to extra hot when going to thai caribbean or indian restaurants and theyre usually not hot at all... again this is one of the 2 restaurants in my life it was a bit too hot for my liking<br/><br/><br/>I usually order my dosas hot though and they are not spicy at all... just the curry was<br/><br/>oh also the mango lassi was the best ive ever had but ive prob had mango lassi less than 15 times

Dosalicious!. My Indian brother in law recommend this place. I've only eaten there once but it tasted fantastic! <br/><br/>It took a little while to receive our order, but it was fresh and delicious. I tried various meat and veggie dosas and enjoyed them all. We also ordered a chicken appetizer that was superb! I hope to go back soon to try more. <br/><br/>The price was good, the decor is plain, and they can accommodate a reasonably large group.

This place was good until the cook left and owner is absent most of the time,. This used to be a good place ,specially on Mondays when the any Dosa are 5.99,<br/>but in the recent past the cooked changed here and I don t see the owner very often ,there is only one waiter so i makes the wait too long,so I dont visit is as often as I used to,but now I go to Dosa Corner @fraser/marine drive, behind the gas station which is opp super 8,the Dosa's are 5.99 all the days ,and the best Dosa's.

As a Londoner I know my curry houses. And this place does a mean Dosa :-) The sauces and accompaniments are all great with superb sambar. Definitely worth trying the Utthapam.<br/><br/>If you've not tried Dosa before, or South Indian food more generally this is well worth a try. Good value, great service and above all the spices and flavours are all there in the right quantities. Plus they show the cricket :-)

Great late-night eats -- but second visit in daytime.... It was almost 3 am. Stumbling around East Vancouver. Long wait for night bus. House of Dosas's bright lights beckoned. A few customers still around. Indian pop videos playing on the TV. Dosa flakes and crumbs all over the floor, aftermath of a busy night. Ordered the onion rava masala dosa to go. I sat and waited. The busser passed a sweeper over the crumbs. Food came after about 10 minutes. Sipped the tasty (included) dhal soup at the bus stop. Munched on the hot pastry and ginger chutney until the bus came. Got home, slept. Woke up with hangover and ate the leftover dosa filling with the coconut chutney (good, but I liked the ginger one better). Perfect Saturday night and Sunday morning.<br/><br/>[Fast-forward December 2013] Came for lunch on a Sunday with four friends. Had dosas and curry crab. Food was still good, but... We asked for one bill, but decided we wanted to pay separately. As he did the math, manager (owner?) told us no less than four times that we should have asked to have the bill split. Telling us once, maybe twice, would have been enough. Sorry we inconvenienced him. Maybe we'll just go somewhere else next time.

Another overrated place. Prawn Dosa 2.5/5 $5.99 - dry salty crepe + potato. There were barely any prawns. I thought the crepe would be crispier because they were able to hold up in other people's photos. I ended up dipping my crepe into the lentil soup. It was still big enough for me to save 1/2 of it for tomorrow's lunch.<br/>Mango Lassi 1/5 $3.75 - The cashier lady just poured it out from the fridge.Mango syrup. It was too watery to be called as a lassi. Overly sweet and I could not taste any yogurt too. I could call it a mango juice or something.<br/>I wasn't sure if I can order takeout for the Monday special. I saw a lot of people picking up their food when I was there.
Chicas
Food is good. Food here is pretty good but don't bother asking their for advice what to order. All the waiters do not even bother to recommend any food to you and they all say exact same thing "they all good". That's my only complain about this restaurant is the customer service not that great but the food is good though. I love their biryani. They make by far the best biryani in town.  Their dosa and curry are also very good.  My husband loves the kothu roti and that's what he always orders whenever we go there. They also give generous portion there and if you love spicy food, that's the place to go for delicious spicy food.

Not worth going

Best Dosa. This place has some of the best South Indian food around!<br/><br/>Don't worry bout the decor or the service the food is GREAT!<br/><br/>Monday's all Dosa's are 5.99!

Worst Dosa in Town!!. As i got your interest let me get to the point straight, i usually drop by house of dosas late in the night and unfortunately the food has declined in quality and quantity, i frequent this restaurant a lot for example myself and my friends turned up on the last weekend of october late in the night which is good as this is the only east indian restaurant to open around that time i ordered the usual dosa along with palak paneer and the dosa was literally burnt to the core along with the filling and i had to refuse my favorite dish and the soup didnt seem the usual as it was very diluted as that is not the case usually
Pinkfatboy
Pretty good value on the $5.99 any dosa Monday.
Phineaus Gage
Quite decent batter for the dosa light and crispy), service was friendly, place was packed, definitely worth the return visit.

No longer open 24 hours. Not sure when this changed but a note on their door says they stay open till 3am fri & sat, till 2am the other nights.

Love a Dosa!. This place is awesome. The food is so good and they have a dosa special on Mondays. Hello! I love south Indian and look for any excuse to go here, it's that good!!

Cigarette smell in food. We went to the Restaurant on sat night for this long weekend , ordered chicken curry and three dosas , the chicken was stone cold and the bread was black on onside and otherside was uncooked , the stuffing in the dosa was tasteless and there is a cigarette smell in it , before the curry used to be very good its my favorite , am not sure whether we will be going to the restaurant again .

WORST SERVICE, BAD MANAGEMENT. I was there a couple of weeks ago with my family on the weekend. The place was full packed. We waited 15 mins for the table after which we got our tables finally, The waiter was polite and friendly. It took them quite a while to take our order. But I understood it was nothing to do with the waiter, as there seemed to be only single person managing all the tables. The other guy who was sitting in the counter did not help the waiter at all and seemed not to care at all. <br/>However, the food was very nice. When we went to pay the bill at the counter, the guy who was sitting there called the waiter who is busy managing other tables. Instead of helping us out he was just watching videos on computer. <br/>This is quite unfair. It should come to the owner's notice. <br/>The owner who happens to be a very good friend of mine is not in town, and i that's why i suppose there's this poor management<br/><br/><br/>-----04 Apr, 2012-----<br/><br/>Not like before. I have regular customer in this place since they opened late ,i usually come late in the weekends,i was there last weekend , when i brought my friends who were visiting me from Calgary ,they were excited to eat dosa, the crepe was not cooked properly , the food was uncompleted , the filling was cold , my favorite appetizer is CHICKEN - 65 , the quantity was very less , i was really embarrassed in front of my friends, this is place used to be pretty good before but now i should say uncompleted ,, because this is not the first time this is the second time happening in this month. I hope they manage this situation otherwise i wont be going again .

Fantastique. Our late night go-to. Our after frisbee go-to as well, and they offered to sponsor our team! Biggest mistake they ever made :P

South Indian Cusine. Went with family to house of dosas in Sunday. We started with a few appies. The chicken 65 was excellent..even better then some I've had in India. We ordered a variety of Dosas. I had the prawn vindaloo, others ordered beef dosa, chicken palak dosa, paper masala dosa. All were tasty but we all thought that the spice level was very mild. It might be our fault as we did not specify to make it spicy. I would try it again and ask for it spicy.

Best Dosa in Vancity. House of Dosas is the best dosa restaurant in Vancouver hands down. The aloo golbi dosa is to die for. I also recommend the eggplant curry.<br/><br/>If youre a criket fan...this is also a great place to watch a game.

Great food. I have tried dosas before and this place has the traditional indian dosas which are served in southern part of india. The dosas are lite, crispy and tasty. They can improve decor and service, but people go to house of dosas for their food and their price. So overall it is a good place to try some south indian food.
Beline
Love it!. We love it here. I think of it as a dosas plus. Everytime we come here we are stuffed, in a good way, can't stop eating. I like the mango lassis here too.
Fizzy
Always great food!! The mango shakes are not as thick as I would like but the chicken vindaloo dosa was full of flavor and not too spicy.... My mom's dosa was good too!
James Ratcliffe
Great Dosas!. I spent 4 months in South India, and in that time I ate a lot of dosas. A lot. The dosas at House of Dosas are definitely as good as any I had in India, and the prices are very good. Great place!
Jimroz
It's a 24 hour restaurant it is an halal restaurant for anybody who wants 2 know but they still serve alchohol
VancouverSavvy
Must, must try!. It was my first time having dosas and they were so yummy. It's basically a giant crispy crepe with a curry like filling - you get to choose the cobination. Monday is dosa day, where all dosas are $5.99. If you like indian food, you will like this. I thought it would not be enough, but one dosa was very filling.
Eatliveburp
...we went to house of dosas (indian crepes) nearby and I am so glad we did. The service was very friendly. The place was clean and kid friendly. Yumjay ordered chicken biryani ( yes, he can eat biryani for all 3 meals:) ) and I ordered veggie kothu roti.
We Need More Napkins
The dosa is a strange, beautiful beast, one that you certainly don’t see rubbing shoulders with butter chicken in Indian restaurants of the West. It’s a (comically) large chick-pea crepe, which is crispier and more savoury than the traditional French preparation, similar in flavour to the crisp papadum. The first time one is presented to you, it’s visually perplexing and looks enormous, but that’s all part of the adventure.
Fong Chan
It was just alright, skin is nice and crispy. I bought the Lamb Vindaloo, wish the filling had a bit more taste tho.
Food Queen
A dosa is a thin crepe like roll made of rice and lentil flour. It gets very crispy and is slightly chewy.
Eating With Kirby
They have an amazing special on Mondays where all dosas are $5.99. Apparently, this special is so popular that lineups usually occur on Mondays! Dosas on the menu range from $7-$14 so the Monday Special is really a good deal.  R ordered Idli (~$3.50) as a starter and in case you were wondering what they are, Idli is a type of savoury rice cake popularized by South Indian cuisine. The cakes are made of dehusked lentils and rice, which are then formed and steamed. It tasted similar to Chinese steamed buns but with a grainier texture. I ordered the Seafood and Mixed Vegetable Dosa ($5.99) which came with carrot and coconut chutney as well as vegetable sambar.

An appetizer I quite enjoyed was the Uttappam. Very much like a non crisp version of the Chinese green onion pancake,
