Dunn's poutine is the best poutine I've ever had!
Smoked meat +poutine Super fast, friendly service and cool jukebox
DELICIOUS SANDWICHES WITh Very spicy Filling ....Chilli mayum sauce was perfect in combination with Smoked meat sandwich...Very nice interior
Dunn's is a delicatessen that first opened in Montreal in 1927. They turned into a chain and now have seven locations in Quebec, one in Ontario, and one in British Columbia. The specialty of the house is smoked meat and they're very likely your best bet for authentic Montreal smoked meat outside of Quebec. The Vancouver restaurant is located downtown and the entire place is an ode to Montreal with it's iconic signage, exposed brick walls, and Montreal-themed photography and artwork. It certainly feels "newer" than the homeland locations (because it is) but a similar vibe can be found here. Founder Myer Dunn's photo is right there on the wall!
We visited on a Friday evening and were seated at a table by the window atop red and black chairs - their signature colour scheme. The servers are friendly and the menu is extensive and pretty well matched to what you'll see on the menu in Montreal. Although I did notice that the prices seemed to be a bit higher.
Here's a little bit of smoked meat snobbery for you: In Montreal Dunn's is viewed as more of a "chain" and less as one of the top places to get smoked meat. Not to say that their product isn't good, but I wouldn't say that they're on the same level as Schwartz's, The Main, Lester's or Smoke Meat Pete. That being said, having any sort of representation all the way over on the west coast is exciting.
For those who know, the only acceptable beverage to order while eating smoked meat is black cherry soda. Anything else and you're doing it wrong! Thankfully the Vancouver Dunn's is aware of this and I ordered a Black Cherry Fountain Soda ($2.50). It's the house wine of Montreal delicatessens!
For our appetizer we instantly ordered up the Latkas (Potato and onion pancakes with sour cream - $4.00) in the "add on" size. These were okay enough. Certainly not up to the caliber of the latkas at The Main in Montreal, but better than nothing. They just didn't seem "homemade" enough for me. I found them a bit too dense, although they were fried and seasoned well. There was no option to order apple sauce with them, which is a bit of a misstep.
They also have Matzoh Ball soup on the menu... I'm curious as to how that goes over.
My husband and I decided to share the Smoked Meat Poutine (Made with hand cut Kennebec fries, fresh Canadian cheese curds covered in our original BBQ beef gravy. We make our gravy in house from scratch using roasted beef bones and our signature barbecue spice mix. Served with chopped smoked meat - $13.00) also known as the Dunn's Poutine. This poutine was very good and very legit. The fries were wonderfully golden and crispy, yet had just the right sogginess after sitting in the gravy. It was exactly the right crispy to sogginess ratio. The cheese curds were on point and plentiful. First of all, they were cheese curds and not some other blasphemous type of cheese (if you are ever served poutine with anything other than cheese curds, you aren't eating poutine). And the sauce brune (as it's called in Quebec) was quite good with a bit of spice. You can tell that they understand the importance of getting it right. And of course the finely chopped smoked meat on top was piled on thick just like it should be and was full of flavour. I would say that this was a near-perfect specimen.
We also shared their signature sandwich: The Best Reuben in the City (Hand sliced smoked meat double stacked in dark rye bread with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing - $16.00) with a Dunn's Original Putters Deli Dill Pickle ($1.00). This is what you come for. At first glance, I was loving the heaping amount of sauerkraut and oozing Swiss. The smoked meat itself didn't appear to be stacked as high as you would get it in Montreal but what really counts is the taste. And it tasted pretty good. The meat was juicy and flavorful, boasting that signature smokey-spicy-savoury... special flavour that is unmatched anywhere else. It might not have been quite the same as in Montreal, but for being all the way over here on the other side of the country, it tasted pretty convincingly like authentic smoked meat.
The pickle was also excellent. Exactly what you want it to be. (They also have something called a "Dill Tomato" and I want to learn a whole lot more about that.)
It may not have been an absolute perfect experience. But let's face it: Vancouver is just about as far away as you can get from Montreal without leaving the country (4,500 kms away!). The fact that Dunn's is here, among the sushi and vegetarian food is at least something. I wonder if the cooks at the Vancouver location are sent to Montreal for training? I would assume so! Plus they serve breakfast on the weekend. Come home to the rich bread-cheese-meat eating that Montreal teaches you to know, love and crave.

I think I must have walked past this place hundreds of times but I finally stopped in and I loved it. We ordered some Matzo Ball Soup, a Californian Grilled Cheese, a Cuban Sandwich, some Pickles and some Cherry Cokes. Food was fresh and delicious and the Service attentive and friendly. Will go back for more.
Just stepped into a world of goodness🤓 Ordered a large "fat" meat sandwich and WOW it's beyond words the chef had a chuckle from the look on my face when the sandwich arrived, the cheesecake is amazing it's so smooth, the service is excellent all the staff extremely friendly i would highly recommend this place
I'm the type of guy that would love to have fatty pieces of meat every now and then. Here at Dunn's, there is an option to have fatty or lean brisket in your sandwich. The size of the sandwich is enough to make you full. I was a little disappointed in the poutine because all you could taste is the oil in the fries. There was a lot of dessert options so my group decided to try a few. I'm very picky with desserts and prefer lightly sweetened and not rich, so the desserts were not my favourite. Maybe for the sweet tooth individuals, their desserts might take your taste buds on a journey.
On Canada Day last year, my family and I ventured to Canada Place to participate in the festivities celebrating our great nation. One of the food stalls that we came across was that of Dunn’s Famous. We decided to go with some Canadian-inspired eats including a Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich ($13.50) and Dunn’s poutine ($10.50).
Fabulous smoked meat sandwich. I chose the medium cut of smoked meat to get maximum flavour without it being too fatty.
I chose the cut wisely. However, I chose the 4oz size which was too small for my lunch appetite. I should have had the 6oz or even tried the 8. My fault.
I wanted to try their poutine so I had an add-on poutine for $4. It was good. Again, when I return I will have the Dunn's poutine with chopped smoked meat to improve that experience.
Bottom line, I will return to Dunn's to try more of the menu. .
A rare trip downtown resulted in our first trip to Dunns. A nice environment with local historical photos on some tables and a wall of old kitchen items. Service was friendly and efficient. I chose the classic 6oz smoked meat sandwich on light right with hot mustard. You can choose how you want your meat lean, medium or fat. I chose fatty as I hate dry meat. Despite the name the meat had no visible fat and was very tasty and juicy. I really enjoyed this simple sandwhich which highlighted the meat. For a side I had latkes which came with a side of sour cream. They were thin and crunchy. I also got an extra side of their pickles. I loved them with a peppery aftertaste. Rainbow Crab got the Classic club. This included the smoked meat along with shaved house roasted turkey, bacon, tomatoes and swiss on light rye. She said although she liked the smoked meat, she loved the turkey. For her side she had onion rings which she said were crunchy but not much taste. We splurged and shared a piece of Dunns famous cheese cake. It was amazing. Rich but fluffy and not too sweet. Overall we hope to return to try some other sandwiches and one of their poutine.
The potato latkes had a good flavour that tasted like crispy mashed potatoes although I wish they had been a bit crispier. The sour cream on top made them extra good. Smoked Meat Sandwich. We ordered an XXL size (they don’t even have it on the menu) for impact and it definitely didn’t disappoint

Dunn’s Famous specializes in authentic Montreal smoked meat, an artisan meat product produced from beef brisket that is cured and spiced using old-world techniques before a slow cooking process. It is then steamed again and hand sliced to order, before used to create the iconic Canadian Montreal smoked meat sandwich.
Of course I had to try their signature item, so I ordered the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich. For the sandwiches, you can choose the size, cut of your meat, mustard, and any side add ons. I asked for advice from one of the servers (who by the way, are extremely well-trained and knowledgeable with the products) and chose the smallest size, a 4 oz meat sandwich, with a medium cut, and Dijon mustard. They use rye bread which comes from the local bakery, Brekka, so the bread is extremely fresh. All sandwiches also come with a pickle, which is refreshing to eat between the sandwich. The smoked meat is seriously some of the most melt-in-your-mouth meat I’ve had though. This is because Dunn’s offers the only hand-sliced Montreal smoked meat in Vancouver. The hand slicing is an art that takes years to perfect and allows the meat to be cooked for a longer period of time and it can be cut against the grain. This would not be achievable with a machine. With a medium cut, you get a mix of lean and fat meat, so you still get the perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Since the opening of Dunn’s Famous‘ first Westcoast location in downtown Vancouver four years ago, Dunn’s has been the go-to spot for anyone in the downtown core craving an authentic, high quality, slow-cooked, hand-sliced to order Montreal smoked meat sandwich. After a closure for renovations, Dunn’s officially re-opened its doors this October, with a newly designed interior which showcases its Quebecois heritage in a much bigger light.
One-liner: Undeniably a great standard for smoked meat sandwiches in Vancouver

By Nancy October 11, 2015 British Columbia, Canada, Canadian, Deli, Fast Food, FOOD, Vancouver No Comments. Dunn’s Famous Restaurant Vancouver, famous for Montreal style hand cut smoked meat sandwiches will be re-opening on October 9, 2015. Dunn’s was temporarily closed for short period to recreate an unique urban vintage-style delicatessen, alongside the traditional sit-down lunch and dinner options. We were here recently at the relaunch to give you all the juicy details.
This is the only restaurant in Vancouver that you can get real Montreal smoked meat prepared properly. Cut lean, medium, medium-fat, or fat to order. Sure it's not as good as the best spots in Montreal but thank you Dunn's for bringing this much needed meat to Vancouver!
Great portions with to die for tender meats! Service is a tad slow and prices are quite high for a "sandwich with fries" kinda meal.
Dunn's has just reopened after a facelift and menu overhaul so I thought I would update this review but keep the old one for posterity.
I have had lunch here two days in a row, first to get a smoked meat monkey off my back, and today to try a new menu item, the house made roast beef sandwich. First off, the new look is great and feels much more comfortable, casual and I think works much better than the darker diner lounge they had before. The menu structure had changed to a la carte with all your sides being add ons. I think this ends up making a sandwich with coleslaw and fries more expensive than before but I really like this change as it opens your options for the same price. Onion rings or fried pickles cost the same as fries or you can get latkes for a dollar more whereas before they were only available separate or as a 3 to 4 dollar add on. I'm happy to have my options open more than save another dollar or get coleslaw I don't really want.
The smoked meat sandwich yesterday was the same glorious sandwich as before. Maybe it was because I had been craving one for a week but it tasted better than meat I had at Schwartz's last year.
The roast beef I had today was moist, flavourful beef with a little hint of rosemary on a ciabatta bun with a slightly crisp exterior. A well put together sandwich that I thoroughly enjoyed as an alternative to smoked meat. I would have liked a little more horseradish but that could have been fixed if I asked.
I also ordered some fried pickles, heavily battered and nothing special. Honestly takes away from the deliciousness of the pickles here so I recommend sticking to the au naturale ones.
All in all, this was a really good change and I think I'll come back for lunch more often again, probably for smoked meat more than anything but I'm pretty curious about that wholely cow sandwich.

Prices are getting a little out of hand. I work nearby so I come to Dunn's only occasionally to satiate my smoked meat cravings. I almost exclusively get the smoked meat platter but I've watched it increase in price to the point where I'm not sure it's worth it.
At first it cost as much as a 8oz smoked meat sandwich combo which two years ago was $14. They increased it to $15 a while ago (I guess to cover those two extra slices of bread) but coming on today it's jumped to $18! It's good smoked meat but it's still a sandwich with fries and coleslaw. I don't know if I'll be back, feels like I should just buy the Schwartz's smoked meat at grocery store at this rate.
So to sum up, it is good thick cut smoked meat here but it's going to feel overpriced.
Ok but didn't live up to the hype. We were visiting friends in Vancouver who where raving over the famous meats at Dunn's. To be honest we were a little disappointed as it just tasted liked a corned beef sandwich with a copious amount of meat. The Poutine was nice. The service was quick but we were there late night and the only customers.
Sunday Breakfast. Came close to opening so the place wasn't too busy.
Service was excellent and I ordered the Smoked Meat Hash and Eggs done overeasy with white toast which was pretty delicious all around.
Also this restaurant participated in a Poutine Challenge and I tried their Pulled Pork Poutine, also well executed with authentic cheese curds and a nice touch with the coleslaw on top.
Good smoked meat.. A friend from Montreal told me that Dunn's opened a branch here and I had to check it out with him. The place was pretty empty, though this was Super Bowl Sunday and I was counting on that. Service was pretty quick to start, though it took a while before drinks came out - there were two servers so I wasn't too sure what the holdup was. Overall, I was disappointed in the service in terms of speed - they were cordial and attentive enough, but I feel that service took longer than it should. My other problem is that they messed up my order by ordering the sandwich instead of the sandwich + fries combo. Trying to make it up by ordering me a side of fries doesn't really work out when I end up paying more in the end (even if it's more fries).
As for the food, it's definitely one of the better smoked-meat places in the city. My friend from Montreal recommended getting the medium cut (they have thin, medium and fat), as the thin tends to get dry. It's a good choice, as the meat had a pretty good flavour to it. Fries were also pretty good; I compare them to White Spot's though they could've used a bit more salt.
Overall, I did like it. Prices are average, and the meat was good. My friend for Montreal said that this is pretty much the same as the Dunn's there, and I appreciate that kind of consistency.
Went here today for the first time.
If only I knew that it had been opened for a year already.
After numerous visits to numerous deli/ restaurants in town looking for a smoked beef similar to my experience in Montreal I think I found the closest yet here in Vancouver.
The texture of the meat was very tender, we ordered the medium fat, the portion was good.
The only comment that I would have, that would be considered remotely negative, would be that the meat could have been more flavourful. Not sure if it was the brining process of the meat which I understand was done at the HQ in Montreal, or whether it was during the steaming process which is done locally.
That said, I will definitely give Dunns another try in the near future.
Great service. Great cheesecake. even better than true confections.
I just got back from a two month work assignment in Montreal, where I fell in love with the smoked meat sandwich. This is the only place in Vancouver to go if you want an authentic version.I've tried Kaplan, Zakkos, Frenchies and Phat.None of them come close.
Finally. As close to Montreal as you can get out west.
Good went with medium fat Reuben. Great flavor, ridiculous size and amazing poutine.
Meaty sandwich with a side of bloating.. Undecided on what to eat, I suggested to some friends we should try Dunn's Famous since we were there already. Upon arrive, we quietly waited for a hostess to greet us. With only three other tables occupied, it seemed dinner on New Years Eve was quiet.
We sat down in a booth on the far end of the restaurant and waited for a server, she came with menus and glasses of water in hand. With these giant menus with pictures of what they serve, I choose the 6 oz Montreal smoked with a Matzoh ball soup on the side. Not ever tried Matzoh ball ever, I figured it was a doughy ball in a soup.
The soup was what I expected. It was a vegetable like salty broth with one giant floating ball. Soft and warm, it was like a 'classic Chinese soup dumpling' as my friend puts it. Over to the Montreal smoked meat medium rare, the meat was perfectly smoked. It broke apart as I chew and the sandwich was nicely fatten by it's on fat. My only suggestion would be a horseradish dressing or something else tangy to go with the meat.
Although the meal was good, I did have some sort of digestion problem. I felt extra bloated and gassy afterwards. I can't pin point what could have caused it. Maybe it was the side coleslaw?
I'd like to return for their all-day breakfast.
Closest in Vancouver to real Montreal smoked meat. Melt in your mouth delicious, as are the accompanying cole slaw and kosher-style pickle. The rye bread is okay - not great.
Great poutine as always....a must try

Had the poutine with meat sauce and smoked meat. Cheese curds also going without saying. Big portion but ate it all! So good!
As an ex-Montrealer, this place is the first to satisfy all qualifications for a genuinely Montreal smoked meat sandwich-hand sliced, lean/medium/fat , steamed meat, rye. They also have the strawberry-topped cheesecake, matzoh ball soup,& latkas. I had a smoked meat sandwich-fat. Extremely juicy meat! It beats Zako's, Kaplan's, Siegel's, Frenchie's.
But since Dunn’s is known for smoked meat, that was the way I had to go. I ordered the smoked meat sandwich combo with the soup of the day. Service was blindingly quick. I don’t think I waited more than five minutes before my order arrived.
Fresh curds, crispy fries of unanimous appeal are paired with gravy of a sweet flavour that can polarize opinions. The poutine is of decent value and worth trying, but you must get the deep fried...
You can choose if you want your meat lean, medium, or fat. I chose medium for a nice balance in the middle and I think it was a good choice. Everyone else chose it too. The meat was super tender and it just melted in your mouth.
True enough, the smoked meat was really tasty and had just the right amount of fat, and it went well with the Swiss. I wish there was more cheese though, but it was actually a reasonable amount.

I’m actually not much of a deli person – now before you start gasping in horror hear me out. Normally if I’m feeling like something to eat that’s more “hands-on” I’d go for a burger or some chicken strips. Being so limited in my deli meat experiences, when Dee offered me a chance to try Dunn’s Famous, a restaurant since the 1900’s known for their deli meat, I just had to say yes!
I love poutine even if that means I have to eat my poutine WITHOUT cheese curds (I know, the purists among you will say that poutine REQUIRES cheese curds). Anyhow, poutine, Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, all of those dishes are pure comfort food. JT wanted some comfort food and he does love poutine, so I told him about Dunn's Famous (I had been invited to the opening but I decided not to write about it until I stopped by and paid on my own dime). An iconic Montreal smoked meat restaurant and delicatessen has opened its first western Canadian location in Vancouver. "Dunn's Famous" is a truly loved Quebec institution founded in 1927 by Myer Dunn. It uses traditional recipes that include unique brine, proprietary light rye sourdough bread and always hand sliced, prepared to order, your-choice-of lean to fat, double A beef brisket smoked for 17 hours then steamed for 3 hours immediately before serving. The first west coast location offers all the Montreal favourites; Montreal smoked mea
Best Montreal smoked meat sandwiches I've ever had in Vancouver. I've been here with work function and everyone loved it also after a hockey game and it was a great way to end the night. Really great food really good location for parties. Very nice staff
Great smoked meat sandwiches, large portions and excellent quality. Coleslaw and fries were also good. I wouldn't get coffee there again, as some of the single portion milk containers were curdled and ruined the coffee however the diner sincerely apologized and were looking into the issue so hopefully it wont happen to others. The coffee did look good before I added milk. Overall good service, good food and clean diner.
Y'know what, it's probably the closest sandwich that tastes authentic as if you were in Montreal..but in Vancouver. The price is steep, but the best bourbon sandwich is huge and is definitely sharable at $16. The montreal meat sandwich was also very good. We got medium lean and the meat was very soft and juicy. The order of the poutine was worth it especially at $6. We got our sandwich to go, but I think they forgot to include the pickles? I'd definitely come back for lunch
This was all of our first time here. I have to say, it's such a surprise I've never even heard of this place. It's a Quebecois owned restaurant franchise and is known for its meatful poutine and sandwiches.
The prices are pretty expensive, but then again meat is expensive. It's cheaper than some ramen and vegan places around the area.
The waitress was nice. She was very friendly. She even recommended one of the sandwiches. But I realized it was the most expensive item on the menu. I took the benefit of the doubt and took it as a genuine advice.
The food itself was so rich! They were ginormous!! I've never seen so much meat in a meal in my whole life (besides German food).
Unfortunately, they were all too salty. I'm heading home right now just dying for a drink of water from all that sodium and fat in the meat and cheese.
Nice place, but I'd only come to check it out once or twice for the novelty.
I heartily recommend their poutine. I had it as a main, generously topped with tender chunks of their buttery, soft smoked meat.
The meat went perfectly with the quality fries and squeaky curds. The gravy was freshly made too, with a rich, earthy flavour that can only come from slowly cooking meat and bone.
The whole combination was an absolute delight.
This is Canada on a plate!
I did intend on having a slice of cheesecake after my main, but the gargantuan portion of poutine had me so stuffed, I could almost feel the cheese curds coming out of my ears (and other orifices).
You can’t come to Vancouver and not have Dunn’s! We had the delicious poutine, the club sandwich with turkey and smoked meat, and the amazing black cherry cola. Very friendly service and you will not leave hungry. Will definitely be back.
Our server was friendly and efficient and the food really was great. We got the smoked meat poutine and a build your own sandwich as well as the fried pickles. Our friends got the beef poutine which wasn’t quite as good. I would say the place needs a really good scrub and some tlc. It looks pretty run down and grimy. Our only other complaint was that it seemed like it was being used as a hangout for the staff’s friends on this particular Friday night as several booths were filled with college aged students who didn’t seem to be ordering anything, just socializing with the staff. Again the food was great which accounts for the 4 stars.
