Review Fable Diner - Vancouver

Jacqueline Cullimore
Great and reasonable spot for breakfast! Coffee was really good, and the service was excellent! The “basic” breakfast was perfect and we appreciated being able to have avocado as a side option instead of meat. It seemed as though everyone else in the restaurant was having a milkshake so we are planning to return another day to give one a try! Recommended!

Our server Maxwell was absolutely amazing! Great service and their entire vibe really made our dining experience fantastic. Super relaxed and bright bubbly energy. Keep up the amazing service! Food was really delicious and one of the better diner meals I've had in a while. Almost reminded me of a well cooked home meal, great job kitchen team!

The food is great and the ambiance was lovely! Service was really friendly but very inattentive - we both finished our water and coffee pretty quickly, and they were never refilled over a full hour meal. The set brunch menu on weekends is really good value with a full meal, coffee, and a cocktail or milkshake as well as a tiny little scone and cookie.

Edit: Someone was nice enough to follow up and advise my contact information was "Lost". Not sure how that happen considering i emailed them a picture but whatever. The food really is great here and for the most part I've never had a problem with the customer service here. So I've amended my review to reflect my satisfaction. I order take out from these guys all the time. Have never had a problem with them or customer service. So it was surprising to say the least to find a metal paper staple in my kids French toast. I feel extremely lucky I was so attentive when cutting it up. This staple was on the underside of the French Toast and stuck right into the bread. Had I not cut it in the right way, I would have never noticed because it was so close to the thick crust. Now I did call right away and the manager that took the call seemed very apologetic and asked me to email them a picture. She assured me they would review the picture and get back to me about how they want to rectify the situation. At the very least a refund was in order. But did they email me back? Did she phone me back after carefully asking for my name and phone number? That would be a negative on both accounts. So it's safe to say I'm extremely disappointed. I did email them once more before posting any reviews to advise them I was going to do so. Do better please in communication and follow up, I understand mistakes happen in the kitchen..... but as management this lack of communication is a failure on you part imo.

Good food and decent service. The coffee was pretty good. We had breakfast with nutritional bowl and French toast. Both were tasty!

A delightful diner, great decoration, everything really cute. Great service, my food had a little problem but they solved quickly. I had the hot mess customized on lettuce wrap and green salad and it was incredibly delicious. My husband ordered the pizza burger, which is out of their menu but they’ll still do it for you. Very good experience!

I feel like this place has gone downhill since the last time I visited. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken burger again and the portion is smaller and it wasn’t crispy. To be fair, the food is alright but it’s Vancouver and there are better options. Also, the seating area by the exit is a terrible place to be with frequent blasts of cold air hitting you.

Had the huevos rancheros and a side of rostis, which were good overall. Nice place for brunch and a reasonable price overall, as I shared with my wife due to not being too hungry. Would go back if I’m in the area and want a reliable place for brunch.

Finally got a chance to pop in here for a bite last night with a friend. The West Coast Toast was exactly what I needed for an evening snack, super tasty, light and satisfying. My friend ( Mr. Picky Burger Guy) ordered the Broadway burger minus the kimchi and loved it! The side of tomato soup was also a hit and I think he may have wanted to lick the bowl. Our server Cass was fantastic and happily accommodated our need for a sundae without strawberries. After a quick chat with Ben they came up with a delightful treat full of ice creamy goodness that went above and beyond. . Thanks Fable Diner, I'll be back and I'm bringing friends.

Just wanted a quick bite, so had the tomato soup and it was delicious and filling! Attentive friendly staff.

I came in late the other night, staff were friendly and I enjoyed a burger. Thanks kids

Line cook eating with bear hands when cooking soggy pancake half a slice of bread wtf sour cream on a deep fried brick of potatoes 20 bucks for breakfast should have waited the hour and went to the walflower across the street.

Comfort food was exactly what I wanted and needed. Grilled cheese on sourdough with a giant bowl of tomato soup was exactly what the doctor ordered ! Bonus: seeing tv personalities from Once Upon a Time.

Fabulous food with top-flight service. Very creative & delightful combinations of flavours. The lack of that 5th star is because hollandaise made with olive oil is NOT hollandaise. Tasty, but a tad mayonnaisey, and NOT hollandaise.

If you haven't tried Fable yet then this restaurant is a good introduction on what type of food they serve. I am a fan of fable and another fan of fable diner now! Next on the list is to try Mission which our server mentioned to us. Nom nom nom!

Service was good nice waitress 👍 Had the truckers breakfast .. had poched eggs with bacon and a hash brown and 1 pancake. Eggs were luke warm .. bacon was mostly all fat one big chunk , hash brown was different not the greatest tasting and pancake was cold and hard .. would not have that again but will try a burger next time .. My mate had the sausage and it was very unpleasing tastes way to much tyme or oregano ..? First timer but will try again 🤘

Comfort food with a conscience (traceable and local as possible). Clean design, clean room. Delicious food. My kids totally love it and not just because of the decadent sundaes.

Great food, fast service and friendly engaged staff make this a very welcome addition to the neighbourhood! The Reno Burger was a wonderful homage to the old Reno Cafe that use to be here. Will be back!

Brunch at Fable. The rosti! Yumm♡. Service was good, attentive but not hovering. Definitely do Fable again.

My daughter and I stopped into fable for dinner. The staff was attentive and super friendly. My picky kid ate all the broccoli with her grilled cheese. She said they perfected it!! I was so happy with my corn. So Delicious! You must try it! I will certainly be back again. Thanks for a great experience

The best burger of the year! Coming back soon/before NYE!

I went to this diner only this year during at night and lucky for us, there was no line up because it can get busy during breakfast to lunchtime hours. I also love that they’re open late for a diner and we can also enjoy dinner menus. I thought the service was amazing! The food was unique and delicious. Our top favorite was the pulled pork with kimchi pancake. The smoked albacore tuna salad with eggplant chips was the second on the list, it’s something I could have everyday and not get tired of. I loved it a lot that I went back the next week.

We came here for Valentine's Day and we ordered the set menu. We had soup to start, gnocchi and ribs as our mains, and for dessert we had chocolate cake and a deconstructed strawberry crumble. The food was excellent, the gnocchi being our favourite. The price for the set menu was very reasonable, however we felt the service was lacking a bit (did not refill our drinks, brought our order to the wrong table). With that being said, we would still recommend.

It’s been a few years since our first visit to Fable Diner. We came here with a group back in 2016 when they had just opened, you can read that review here. Fast forward to present day, we were looking for a place to have dinner one evening that wasn’t one of our usual places!. After some browsing, we decided to come here because the fiance loves the tomato cheddar soup and I would finally be able to try it! I’m happy to say that my digestive issues have temporarily subsided so I need to take advantage of being able to eat dairy.

Why are there so many flies? Their dishes are creative and interesting. But price is too much compared to actual portions of food. I was disappointed. Good hipster vibes. Our server was friendly.

Fable Diner is a modern take on the diner concept brought to you by the same people who brought you Fable Kitchen on West 4th. Walking into this location at the corner of Main and Broadway, there’s no denying that the appearance harkens back to the diner vibe, complete with booths with old-school countertops.

At my grandmother’s age she no longer likes eating Chinese food, so my family has introduced her to hamburgers, and she has taken to them it like fish in water. So to avoid another dinner at a chain restaurant serving her new favourite handheld, I suggested we try somewhere different. We all gathered at “Fable Diner”, where they too offer hamburgers.

This is an upscale diner located on Broadway and Main serving up a menu of traditional diner food with a more modern twist. During my visit there, I got their Baked Mac and Cheese, which I added Bacon to for an additional $5. I initially wanted their Nutella French Toast, but unfortunately they were out (some guy in front of me apparently got the last slice), so I ended up going with my second choice, which was their Roasted Duck Pancake, which I added an egg to for $2. The food was very tasty; however, I did find their portions to be rather small, especially for the prices that they were charging. The service was uneven: the servers were very friendly at first, but towards the end of the meal, they seemed to forget my existence and it took me 15 minutes to finally flag one down and get the bill. All in all, while I did like the food in this place, the prices and uneven service prevents me from giving this place a full-hearted recommendation.

Baked Mac and Cheese + Bacon ($13 + $5):
4/5
This came topped with breadcrumbs, green onions, and goat cheese. The noodles were perfectly cooked for me, being sufficiently tender but still maintaining some chew. I loved the sauce, which was rich and thick, and coated the noodles well. The goat cheese also lent a nice saltiness. I also really liked their version of bacon, which wasn't really bacon per se, but rather chunks of tender pork belly. I did find it to be a bit underseasoned, however. The portion was pretty small; more like a side to me than a main.

Roasted Duck Pancake + Egg ($15 + $2):
4/5
This consisted was topped with pulled duck, kimchi, onion, sesame and kewpie mayo. I loved the pancake itself, which was really soft and fluffy, and was of a fair size. The flavours of the toppings were just fantastic, and a perfect blend of savoury and sweet. I did find the portion of duck to be a bit stingy however. I added a poached egg for an addition $2, but to be honest, I'm really not sure if it really added all that much. While I certainly did enjoy the dish, I don't think it's better than the pancakes from Red Wagon, which is cheaper and comes at a much heartier portion.

Summary:
Food: 4/5
Price: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Roasted Duck Pancake, Baked Mac and Cheese

Eggs Benedict is huge and all the elements were seasoned really well. One egg was a little overcooked. The milkshakes were phenomenal and not too sweet. The duck kimchi pancake was well balanced and perfectly composed.

Fable Diner is located on Broadway and Main Street. It is one of the popular restaurants at Mt. Pleasant.

We came here because of the reviews. Incredible food! Excellent services! Great atmosphere!

We had a Roast Duck Pancakes. It was flavored with kimchi and green onions. We added $1.50 for an egg on top. It was delicious!

We also had a Truckers Breakfast. (eggs, potatoes, toast, pancakes, bacon and jam). Overall, it was a solid breakfast choice.

We definitely will go back to try their Milkshake and Loaded French Toast.

Food: 🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽 Must Try!
Service: 👩‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳👩‍🍳
Price: 💲$20-$30 for two
Presentation: 📷📷📷
Parking: street parking
Would I Return: Yes 🙋

Explore the menu: Roasted Duck Pancakes, Truckers Breakfast

Bottom line: I've walked past Fable multiple times and I've tried to come here several times aswell but always to closed doors. Today, I finally had the chance to try Fable with my friends. I had their Happy hours specials and added a side of fries which actually worked out to be the same as none happy hour prices. The burger was good, their Fable sauce was delicious. Fries are extra crispy and there's a hint of banana or something... maybe it's their oil. I saw a fried chicken burger come out and I may need to order that next time.

One of my favourite places to eat. Great atmosphere. Simple food with beautiful presentations. Very generous portions. I cannot stress how fresh the food is here. Excellent service!

The famous Chef Trevor Bird of Fable was present crafting up a delicious and wonderfully entertaining Westcoast paella featuring Kyuquot Sound Sablefish, Fanny Bay Mussels, and Pentlatch Seafood Clams.

Delicious brunch food with a twist! I got here at 11am on a Saturday and there was quite the lineup. I didn't want to wait so I opted to grab 2 seats at the bar instead of waiting 30 mins for a table.

The brunch menu is one page and everything looks delicious and the servers are all very friendly. Good portions and speedy service.

Sausage & Egger Breakfast Sandwich:
Overall delicious - the house made sausage is peppery and not that greasy. It tastes great as a sandwich but if you were to eat it piece by piece it would be too salty. I also enjoyed their potato rosti which was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and well seasoned.

Roast Duck Pancakes:
Sweet and savoury with a kick. Very much fusion and great if you like Korean-Japanese-Chinese-Canadian food! Totally worth trying! It comes topped with cilantro and green onions which I know not everyone would want but tastes amazing here.

1. I heard about Mealshare a few days ago, and their fundraiser, Tonight for Tomorrow, happening on May 10, 2017. Basically, you eat at one of the participating restaurants, and they’ll donate $1 for each $1 spent to provide food for youth. Simple as that, right? I’m always skeptical about non profits and how much of the proceeds actually go to their cause, but this seems pretty legit. I’ve been to a only a few restaurants on the list for their fundraiser, including Fable Diner:

Today I wanted to celebrate a early lazy morning with my girlfriend. We never had time and today we managed to squeeze in 45 mins here at the diner.

I love fables concept from farm to table. I've always wondered how they would interpret diner style food here. My girlfriend and I was very excited and had high expectations. From the hostess to the service at our table, front house service is excellent. As for the food, wow it was very memorable.

I had the duck pancakes. Savoury duck, kimchi, fried sunny egg on top, it was incredible. The pancake itself wasn't heavy. I didn't feel gross and greased out. The fermented spicey cabbage really cut the fat of the duck.

My girlfriend ordered the pull pork bennys. Holy shit the biscuits were delicious. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Amazing prep skills, cudos to the chefs in the back. We both loved their hash browns so much. I ordered an extra and I love how they garnish with sour cream and onions.

I would definitely recommend everyone to try this place once. I've fallen in love. This place is one of my top diner places to go on my list.

For those of you who ride along the 99 B-Line on a daily basis, Fable Diner might have caught your attention the past year. Fable Diner, is a modern diner joint occupying the former space of the recently closed Reno Diner at the corner of Main and Broadway. Operated and owned by Chef Trevor Bird (who also owns Fable Kitchen in Kitsilano), both establishments focus on a farm-to-table concept emphasizing on local and sustainable sourcing.

It was a great day to have a few mimosas with the girls and some brunch. I've heard of Fable but not Fable diner. My favorite part was no line up!

The quality of the good was pretty good and next time I'm getting what my friend had. I ordered hash and eggs and added beef brisket, my friend got regular hash and eggs and my other friend got roast duck pancake! Mine was pretty decent but that duck pancake looked amazing!!! Mimosas were good but next time I'm getting a boozy milkshake :) They looked to die for.

I'll be back here for sure as there were other menu items I really wanted to try. The place had a good vibe with good service. I love finding small gems like this and I hope next time is just as good!

A few years ago I went to Fable Kitchen for dinner and I was impressed with their food but it’s not a place I can visit often. I was delighted to hear that they were going to take over the space where Reno’s diner used to be and turn it into a more casual and affordable version of Fable Kitchen but with a diner feel. After trying out a free yoga class nearby, I headed over for dinner. Fable Diner is conveniently located on Main and Broadway.

Fable Diner opened last year and they took over the space of Reno’s, which was previously a diner. It is located at the Lee Building at the corner of Main and Broadway. I enjoyed their first restaurant – Fable, so I really wanted to come here for brunch to try their interpretation of diner food.

It was my birthday week that day and one of close friend decided to take me out for dinner. Thank you my love! It was not our plan to eat here. We were just walking around East Broadway and passed by this Canadian diner. He checked the menu and thinks it is worth a try. I was really impressed when we went inside. The place is very fancy and modern diner. The diner was also busy that time but lucky that we got a good seat immediately. When our server found out that it was our first time to the diner, she explained a lot about their food and which one is good. She was actually a sweetheart.
Picky Diner
The FD Burger is super tasty. The patty was not tightly packed, which very much gave a proper diner burger's texture. Usually I love my burger patties tight and thick, but somehow the FD patty got away with the incredible flavours. I almost wanted to say it was not 100% beef. Maybe there was pork, veal, or cheese in it? The fat content that was grilled properly is the source of that winner flavour. While I just couldn't figure out what it is, I found it quite ingenious. Maybe it is just another piece of magic.

I came here for brunch. At 11am on a weekend, the place was bustling with a lineup outside the door. Fresh ingredients and classic brunch menu with a twist. The price is a bit high for the neighborhood, but quality of food makes up for it. I enjoyed the West Coast Toast with an egg, but found the portion to be a bit small for brunch, would've liked to see a little more, either as a side or just give more toast/egg? The fried chicken on the fried chicken eggs bennie was delicious, juicy inside and lightly seasoned crispiness outside.
I definitly would come again and try out more items on the menu.

We showed up a couple of minutes before 9:30am on Saturday morning and there was already a line outside (restaurant opens at 9:30am). The line moved fairly quickly as they sat everyone inside.

We ordered
1) Bennies - hollandaise over fried chicken with gravy on top of scones
2) roast duck pancake with kimchi, kewpie and an egg.

Each plate was $15 but they were delicious, full of unique flavor. The fried chicken wasn't greasy but still crispy on the outside despite covered in sauce.

The service was friendly and the waitress always made sure my coffee was topped up.
It was a lazy weekend morning, and I decided to go for brunch. I’m not actually a brunch kind of person, but I enjoy it once or twice a year. We decided to go to Fable Diner, on East Broadway, just west of Main street. There was a line up outside, when I arrived, and we waited about 10 minutes for a table.
Natalie
Came here on the weekend for brunch and it was quite busy. We got a table for four in about 10 minutes, but when we were leaving, the wait looked much longer. Overall the service and atmosphere was good, but the food was OK.

The highlight of my meal was the pumpkin pie milkshake. My friend ordered it and let me try. It had just the right amount of spice and sweetness. For brunchfast, I chose the roast duck pancake and added an egg for $1. I think all the components of the dish went well together. The only downfall was the amount of sauce. Kimchi is already pretty salty and then there was the addition of a sauce that made the dish too salty. It started to overpower everything. If it wasn't for the sauce, I would have definitely enjoyed it more. For dessert, we shared the pumpkin mascarpone cheesecake. It had a similar flavour to the milkshake and was tasty too. I don't know if I'll come back, but I think it could be a decent brunch place; especially because it is easy to get to with transit.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, even if you eat it late at night. There’s just something magical about some sort of pork product accompanied by a runny egg and a slice of toast. It doesn’t need to be particularly fancy to be fantastic, but it sure helps when you use quality, locally-sourced ingredients and prepare them in a more imaginative way. So, we made our way over to Fable Diner for Sunday brunch with our expectations high and our stomachs growling.

Was looking forward to trying this diner since being a fan of the fable restaurant. I thought it was pretty average at best. We ordered the FD burger, Korean chicken leg, a peanut butter shake, and chuck Chocolate bourbon cake. Quite honestly, the burger was ok, nothing memorable. Chips were good but my girlfriend said they were too salty. Next the Korean Chicken leg, it was ok as well. I was for some reason expecting this to be a fried rice dish since it mentioned kimchi fried rice. The serving was quite small on the rice, maybe 2 tablespoons. But I had more issue in the that it didn't really taste like kimchi. Just some crispy bits of fried rice. Last was the dessert, this was my least favourite of the night. It was a special so if I remember correctly, it was chocolate Bourbon? The cake itself was dense but moist, coffee cake or pound cake texture. Icing/frosting didn't melt in the mouth, not even sure how to describe it as flavor was practically nonexistent. Overwhipped dollops of cream, to the point where the fat solids are starting to seperate with a noticeable mouth feel of butter.
Bourbon caramel (?) is this where the bourbon was? I have no clue. I can't remember the taste of it, so it wasn't a very good caramel. A thicker, less runny caramel would be better, so that it will be able to stand out but still meld in with the flavor of the cake

Pros... the peanut butter shake was awesome! Defiantly would come back for that. The space itself was quite nice and modern diner feel. Plenty of room.

Side note, the waitress did offer to trade the dessert with something else. But we declined

Loved Fable in kits, decided to try the fable diner with close friend before he left for McGill. Interior was very simple and comfy. The menu was quite different from fable, and very interesting. We tried a tomato gnocchi, cottage pie, and grilled cheese. The gnocchi was cheaper, quality was similar; however, the presentation was also quite simple compared to the gnocchi at Fable. The cottage pie was slightly over-seasoned. The grilled cheese was excellent as at Fable. Overall very good experience - we will be back for more!
I love the fact that Fable ended up in the Lee building as well as in an iconic location that had been a diner for decades. The new diner is full of character, has a diner feel with a twist which can also describe their menu! Chef Trevor Bird and partners Ron and Kathy have rolled out a great new concept while still keeping in line with the "Farm to Table" belief! Love the new location and will be back again and again! Make sure you try the Westcoast toast and the Roasted duck pancake!

The much anticipated Fable Diner is now open in the historic Lee Building at 151 West Broadway at Main Street. Fable Diner is Chef Trevor Bird’s second venture with the first being sister restaurant, Fable Kitchen, in Kitsilano. Chef Bird is still continuing with the farm-to-table concept but in a more casual, diner setting. This week, I visited Fable Diner for lunch to try out their offerings.

Fresh and tasty food. Had a great time, will definitely recommend the chickpea fritters and the nectarine salad. Absolutely in love with the Korean green onion duck pancake! New favourite place to eat!

Welcome to the neighborhood! Tomorrow will be Fable Diner's grand opening. So tonight is still a soft opening, but we wanted to give it a try before the big crowds. I ordered the FD burger and my wife had the nectarine salad. My burger seemed to be off. The top half of the bun was fine, but the bottom was quite hard. And the beef patty tasted dry even though there was sauce oozing out of the burger. The two small patties didn't work for me because it can overcook quite easily, mine was overcooked. The fries that came with my burger were too burnt for my liking, I only ate half.

My wife really enjoyed the salad. And she thinks I'm being too harsh with my review. C'mon man, she should open her own Zomato account if she doesn't like what I have to say.

We finished with a blueberry pie a la mode that took 15 minutes to arrive. Maybe our waitress forgot? Because it came right away when I asked another staff to check on it. I liked that the blueberry filing wasn't too sweet. But the crust was too hard, this needs work, and would've been better served warmed.

Our waitress said she was new and it was her first day, we told her that we were new too. That kinda broke the ice. She was nice, but a bit forgetful. I don't expect the restaurant to be fully polished by tomorrow's grand opening. I'll wait another month or so before returning to try some of the more creative dishes on the menu. Looking forward to better executed food and service on the next visit.

Management had apologized and encouraged me to speak up if I'm unhappy with the food quality the next time I'm there so that they can make it right. Of course, I will give them another try. I understand there's bound to be a learning curve with a new restaurant. Like, I said earlier, I'm looking forward to see how they improve with feedback received during the soft launch.
