Review Bestie - Vancouver

Cynthia Fung
Best place in the city for delicious currywurst! Their other sausage options are equally tasty (had the turkey and it was perfectly seasoned), while their selection of sides deserve huge recognition for holding their own and balancing out every plate. Can't go wrong with the classic cut fries that come with the currywurst, but my favourite sides are their 'neu potato salad', the tangy sauerkraut and their pretzels with mustard! Everything is so delicious and the staff here are some of the friendliest and coolest people you could ever have a conversation with! Thank you Bestie for 7 amazing years! Can't wait to see what's next from you guys :)

My first German pub experience and it was tasty. The currywurst and the burger were very unique amd exciting. All the beer on tab is amazing there. Nice and quiet pub where you can enjoy a glass of beer and catch up with your buddy.

Nice, casual place offering some nice German šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ food, like Currywurst (German sausage with curry-ketchup sauce) and sausages overall, LeberkƤse (meatloaf), Sauerkraut, and more. The food is really good and authentic (only tried the Currywurst with fries so far) and the service is good, too. The place itself is on the small-ish side, so depending on the size of your party you might need to wait a bit. We will definitely come again!

One of the best places for flavour, quality and a bang for your buck! Every single item was absolutely delicious and unique. Each dish was on point and everything complimented each other very nicely, including their in house made sauces... also best curried ketchup and mayo I've ever had. Service was legit, zero complaints.

Hidden gem in the China Town area. My fiancee and I were walking around the area one day and stumbled upon this hipster looking German sausage joint. The service was amazing. The food was phenomenal. We tried the Currywurst and it was nothing I have tried before. The sauce was amazing!! Definitely worth a try when you are in the area. They also have beer on tap as well. You can't go wrong!!
Michael Cotroneo
Not totally authentic German...but totally worth it!! Great customer service. Best apple cider I've ever had. The cheese fries are great. The sausage could be bigger, but the flavor is good. Sauerkraut is fresh and plentiful. A+

Want an impromptu trip to Berlin? Looking for a getaway from the every day with your own Bestie? Then I highly recommend trying some of the very filling and authentic dishes at Bestie. We had lunch and my date swears it is just like the delicious delectables that are available when you get off the train in Berlin. My Bestie and I had the Curry Sausage on fries and the pretzel board. I don't like curry really, but I will definitely go back for more of that curry sausage. The Pretzel Board is deceptive and quite filing; Multiple Mustards! Stinky Cheese Sauce!

Walked by Bestie and reading the menu sold me! Split the Animal Farm with my partner and it was phenomenal! Get it with the extra mayo and sauce! The music, staff, atmosphere and obviously the food will keep me coming back here.

One of my favourite places in this city! I always make a point of bringing my friends there when they visit from out of town, and everybody loves it! The classic thĆ¼ringer currywurst is my favourite (I always make it "schranke", no regrets!); great fries, great wurst. They have good soft, chewy pretzels, and they always have a good selection of local beers on tap. They have great fast and friendly service even if it's constantly a packed house. A perfect spot for a quick bite or for lingering longer around a few steins with friends!

This place had the best ambiance on Earth! Awesome playlist, in a German restaurant, in Chinatown. Food was authentic. My best friend is half German, I have had it before. The staff is friendly and helpful. I had a wonderful time there!

Usually I'm a quick eater, but their dish had me savouring every bite... I followed the meal with the ginger snap ice cream sandwich and wooooooeee was that a great decision. 2 Yums Up. This place is the Wurst

Cheap and cheerful. A small menu, but consistently good food. Several local brews on tap. Friendly staff. I'm there at least once a week.

Really great place for catching up with friends you haven't seen for a while! Not the kind of place you would want to get smashed at although their alcohol portions and prices are not to miss! The food was good too.
Mike Sones
Such a chill little hidden gem! Good place to kick back and have some good eats and listen to good beats! :)

Terrible spot - terrible service. We waited 40 minutes only to be snuffed by waitresses and hostesses. Haven't felt so unwelcome in a long time.

This place is amazing, the food is amazing, the service Is great and the guys are just lovely!!!!!!

If you are looking for a change of pace at lunch, definitely a good choice. The currywurst is authentic and brings back great memories of Berlin. Good value.

Authentic taste of a German currywurst; will be back. The only think they could impove is to add some more sauce

It was amazing and the stinky cheese sauce is yum yum ļæ½

This is a small casual shop located in Chinatown specializing in German food, specifically sausages (with various sides such as fries, salads and pretzels). The place was quite popular and crowded when I visited during lunch time: I ended up getting seated at the end of the bar, which was a bit cramped since the countertop space was smaller there (the place did clear up a bit over the next half hour). I had their Currywurst, which I added cheese sauce to for an additional $2 along with their All Natural Game Sausage (which changes daily - the one I got was Rosemary Lamb) for another additional $1. I also had a Sausage Roll. I quite enjoyed the food, in particular the pork sausage in their sausage roll, which I thought was fantastic. The server I had was very friendly and quite attentive, although she does sometimes get confused and forget the order. All in all, I quite enjoyed my experience there; this place is worth checking out.

Currywurst (Cheesy, All Natural Game Sausage, $9.50 + $2 + $1):
3.5/5
This consisted of fries topped with ketchup and curry powder, as well as your choice of a sausage. I decided to add cheese sauce to the fries for an extra $2, and got their game sausage, which happened to be Rosemary Lamb, for another extra $1. The sausage was quite tasty: tender and juicy, although I did find it to be just a tad on the bland side. I absolutely loved their fries, which were very fresh, hot and crispy on the outside, while tender and starchy on the inside. The curried ketchup also provided a great flavour. I did find the cheese sauce to be a bit bland however, and not worth the extra $2.

Sausage Roll ($6):
4.5/5
This consisted of a pork sausage wrapped in a flaky pastry. The sausage was nothing short of fantastic: tender and juicy with a fantastic spice. I did find the pastry to be just a tad doughy, although still tasty. The portion was also a little small: I think that it's probably a better deal to just get their sausage on its own instead.

Summary:
Food: 4/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Overall: 4/5
Recommendations: Pork Thuringer

Currywurst with fries is very good. Do not order Sauerkraut!! It is NOT good. It is just raw cabbage. Sauerkraut is supposed to be fermented and then cooked. Save your money and get yourself some real Sauerkraut at the European Deli on Davie.

Meal:Ā Ā Currywurst with Pork, Saurkraut with Pork, Pretzel Platter, and Sausage Roll. Plus way too many stein beers.Ā . Service:Ā Ā Can't complain one bit. Our server was awesome and respected our space. We stayed way past closing and she was cool with it. The only thing to know Ā is CASH OR DEBIT ONLY.

Some of the best currywurst I've ever had. I was in Germany last month and this is on par, if not better, then the currywurst I had there. I enjoyed their smoky bison wurst, which was very rich and flavourful. The actual sauce was warm and spiced amazingly. I also have to give mention to their great food presentation. Can't wait to be back to try their other flavours and menu items.
Cai
They have steins of beer . Lovely place . Good ambience and good service .. it's literally a sausage fest . But they don't have a lot of flavours but the ones they have are good . They are more famous for their fries. The day I went they ran out of their fries and I saw people change their mind at the door because there were no fries .

Chinatown has been experiencing a rapid pace of change over the past few years. There is no better example of this than when Bestie moved into a former book/media store. I was a bit skeptical at first, and even resented the idea that something like this could move into the area, but they can cook up a damn good sausage!

The folks behind Chinatown-based currywurst purveyorsĀ Bestie have a side business called Sunday Cider. It makes me really happy to think that local BC apples are being pressed and fermented right within city limits (their production facility is near Clark DriveĀ within walking distance of Strange Fellows). They held a one-off cider event on December 11, 2016 (on a Sunday of course) called ā€œCider Sabbathā€:

came here to eat a quick dinner prior going somewhere, so then, i ordered a classic pork and turkey if i'm not mistaken. packed it to go since there wasn't enough time, then the bratwurst are very meaty and have enough flavour to make it enjoyable and distuinguishable. i must say it's pretty good, but then for the price that i'm paying... it's kinda of hard to agree on the taste. definitely can be a good place to try but there's nothing really special about the taste or price that will make me drop by here again. and the dipping sauce that they have i don't know what exactly but it goes well with the bratwurst
Larbear
Came here and tried the vegetarian wurst on sour kraut with their spicy ketchup. It was delicious and the flavours went together so well! I also had a pretzel (made fresh daily at a bakery across the street) with their mustard as a side instead of fries. It was very soft and fresh. The staff was also super friendly and accommodating and explained everything very well. Lots of vegan options here too! Will be back

Walk in, dressed in your most comfortable wardrobe. No body judges. A great dining experience with comfort food and local brew. Soak up the aftertaste of bratwurst and sauerkruat with curry ketchup and finish with a carefree stroll in Chinatown

A brew and a bratwurst. It's a formula for success. I always get the menu option that comes with sauerkraut, and I put curried ketchup on everything. Really solid, simple food.

After way too many years, I finally defend my PhD at the end of February. And then Iā€™m outta here. Well, kinda. Technically Iā€™m paid to work until the end of the month, so Iā€™ll return to the lab for a few days of cleaning up my bench and throwing out ancient plates in the cold room. But then Iā€™m outta here. And I mean really outta here. March 1st I hop on a plane and go on a 5 week trip that will take me everywhere from San Francisco to Germany to the UK and all thatā€™s in between. And I think we all know what part of this trip Iā€™m the most excited about. From In-and-Out Burger to The Rebel Within, and from a Currywurst & Beer Tour to High Tea at the Ritz, Iā€™ve literally organized my travel plans around my eating adventures.

Great sausage and comes with a delicious sauce. Apple cider is strong and flavourful. Fries were okay. Friendly customer service, but slow. Cozy place.

Great food! I really enjoyed my meal here, and the selection of craft beers that they had to offer. The ambiance of the restaurant was awesome too and the service was quick and efficient! I can't wait to come back here!

Ok beer selection, like the option to get a "stein" sized beer. Currywurst was amazing, very good pork sausage, I got the mayo and green onions on mine, delicious.
Soheyl
Meh... Well it offers what it promises, which is basically different flavors of sausages, and they are OK, but they charge too much for them. Friendly staff, not many seats. Might visit again, but not crazy about them.

Bratwurst and steins of beer...hard to dislike! Yummy food (cheesy fries, yes!), interesting interior (kind of IKEAesque) and good service from ever stylish staff. The only downfall is that this place is quite small and no longer a hidden gem, expect a line!
Imonaplain
Anti-climatic place. Currywurst can't compare to what you'd get in Berlin. Wish they made their fries in house rather than your standard frozen ones. Pretzel was meh, unevenly shaped so it was too hard in some areas too soft in others. Mustard variety was good. Decor is great, nice atmosphere overall and simple menu allows for good return on investment.

I ordered the pork and Curtis ordered theĀ special which was rosemary lamb. Both were delicious but I have to admit the rosemary lamb was the better choice. It had more flavour than the traditional pork bratwurst. These were under the Sausage and Sauerkraut part of the menu, all meats are locally made, all natural sausage served with warm sauerkraut, house mustard, crispy fries, and mayonnaise. The fries were amazing, crispy on the outside and very light and fluffy inside.
DanoRama
It really doesn't get anymore hipster than this place! The decor is simple as is the selection of food, however I assure, this will be the best wurst you have ever had. I have to been to Berlin, but the food and interesting selection of Shandy beers sure take you there. Currywurst! How the hell can you go wrong with that dish. Mmmmm

I'd been wanting to check this place out for awhile - I love German food... Beer, sausages, mustard, sauerkraut, and was intrigued by the modern style and simplicity. It did not disappoint, I'll definitely be back. A couple of friends and I went mid day on a Tuesday, and it was full, so I bet it fills up quickly on a weekend night. We got curry wurst, beer, sausages, sauerkraut and side beet salad. All tasty. I could have done with a hotter, grainy mustard. Their beer selection is solid: German imports and various draft locals. Super bonus for me: they do veggie sausages for all you veggies like me out there.

I love everything about Bestie. I love how the interior looks, with the wood panel walls and the cute booth by the window. With little details like the cuckoo clock against the white wall and the white beer mugs hanging behind the counter. They have a simple but great menu. You can choose between currywurst or sausage and sauerkraut. Whichever of the two you decide to get, you get to choose your own sausage. The currywurst comes with a bed of fries topped with a sliced sausage and seasoned with their homemade curry ketchup. The sausage and sauerkraut comes with a side of fries, sauerkraut and your choice of sausage. I like to substitute my fries with cheese fries. They also have a good collection of beer and great specials that change often. Another reason why I love going to Bestie is because some nights they stay open late. Itā€™s also good to note that their veggie sausage is actually vegan so itā€™s a good place to go for the vegan and non-vegans alike.

Sauerkraut tastes straight from the jar. Nothing exceptional about it. Could use added spices, pinch of sugar. Limited sausage selection. If you have any German heritage you will be disappointed and will already know where to get a good bratwurst. This is not that place.
Every Day Is A Food Day
Iā€™ve tried the real currywurst in Berlin, but I would say Bestie does it just as good or even better! Currywurst is really just sausage on fries with a curry powder mixed ketchup sauce. At Bestie, there are really two main sausage menu items: the currywurst or sausage with sauerkraut. Iā€™m not a huge fan of sauerkraut, so S and I chose the currywurst. You can then choose from the type of meat you want in the sausage. We went for the Classic Pork ThĆ¼ringer , which was very delicious. You can tell the sausages are made with fresh meat. The curry ketchup is slightly spicy, but not overwhelming. I also liked the tangy flavour of the ketchup, which was more like tomato paste. The fries themselves, arenā€™t anything special. I wuoldnā€™t say they are crispy, but the sauce makes the fries flavourful and tasty. Currywurst ā€“ Turkey Chorizo G go the currywurst with the Turky Chorizo as the meat in the sausage. The chorizo gave the sausage a slight more heat than the classic pork sausage. Very good as well. If you like ketchup and spice, you will like Bestieā€™s currywursts. I do find that the prices are on the high side at around $8.50 per order. Itā€™s almost like paying for a full meal! It does fill you up, but knowing that itā€™s just fries and sausages makes you wonder how much they make from this. Pros: ā€“ Great spot to try currywurst ā€“ Quality sausages Cons:

Bestie is the Wurstie..... With all the local hype I expected the Veggie wurst to be the best I had ever tasted but was enormously disappointed. The Veggie wurst was a Tofurky sausage! Those of you who are vegetarians need no explanation. But for those who are our carnivore friends, Tofurky is a mass produced vegetarian meat product who also makes sausages. It looks, smells, and tasted exactly like the Tofurky dog. Not to make any accusations, but I could have sworn it was the same thing. So much for originality.

I liked this place. I thought the portions were a good size and quite good value. The sausages were tasty and the beer was excellent with the nice option of a small glass. Bit of a fly problem which they should deal with.

Good snack food, horrible service, the servers never took my order and just stood there talking with her coworkers.
The_eugene
Outstanding sausage, wicked coleslaw, perfect fries. Instant favourite.

Super Trendy. I felt like walking into some black hole, where weekenders are located and everywhere else in Chinatown was dead. I couldn't get over how trendy this place is and how people come to it because their friends get them to, or because they know that other trendy people will be there.

It's a trendy hotspot until all the fuss and commotion wears off.

The food is not the reason why people come here, they come to Bestie because of the hype. They may think it's awesome food, but who are we kidding? It's really just for the atmosphere. No need to go out of your way for subpar sausages and pickles.

I talked to a guy next to me and he was so in denial about this fact.

Will you meet your boyfriend here? No. Will you meet your girlfriend here? No. You will meet other pretentious folk who admire below average food and fancy decor.

Their beer in a mug was unimpressive, would it kill them to have a pitcher?

It has a diner esk type of feel with the bar, but atmosphere only goes so far with real people. But a lot of other places in the city are all about the atmosphere too and to possibly be in a social environment, but god forbid actually Be social in it. (THE HORROR THE HORROR)

Trendy joint, in a now becoming trendy location. Still looks out of place and like some strange vortex of sound and color..and trendies.

Will I return? Only to crash their party again.

Should be "Worstie'. I wanted to love this place having lived in Munich for a few years and eating a lot at "Schnellimbiss'"...I lived on that stuff for lunch for a very long time and I was so excited to try this place. To all the folks who think this food is great...you seriously have to get yourselves over to Munchen and try the real thing...I was so disappointed and the people I came with agreed; plus the portions are small...German street food this is not!

I likes it. Simple decor, comfy seating, friendly and welcoming staff and most important cheap and delicious food. i will be back.

Great snack place. Good sausage and borsch! Hit the spot on a rainy Vancouver day. Fries were fresh and hot. Sausage tasty and soup was Yummy.
I_heart_food
Fantastic sausages and great service. I have eaten at Bestie quite a few times and I always have a great experience. The staff are helpful and friendly, and the food is very delicious. I have tried most of the sausages, and the classic pork is my favorite. Their sides dishes are also very good. It is small restaurant and its always packed, so it's a fun environment to be in. I will definitely be back!

OK. (shrug)..... Went first time just this Monday as I was craving takeout with protein and no carbs. Found Bestie on urbanspoon. Went in and was impressed with the small space, very open and airy, well-lit and very clean. I tried the PORK sausage and really liked it. The portion was decent. It came with a fair amount of sauerkraut and I switched up fries for salad instead. The cauliflower was amazing even though I disliked cumin in general...but this salad offered interesting texture with a hint of sweetness from the raisins.

The next day I went back again, this time decided to try the RED PEPPER CHICKEN...very very disappointing. Bland, flavourless,...just very underwhelming. I could not taste any of the ingredients, no heat, nothing. I wished they even BBQ the darn thing to give it a charred, smokiness to help with beefing up the flavor. I literally forced myself to chug the rest of it down coz I had no salt with me. The sauerkraut was helpful in getting the job done.

I would say give this place a try, but be very selective in which type of sausage you select as it could ruin your experience altogether. I'm sure with fries, it makes a better experience. To some, it may be no different than any sausage you find out at food carts. But the thing is, it's all natural with no additives or preservatives, that's where you're paying the premium. But was it really worth the buck? You will need to try it and decide for yourself.
Natalia
Really good!. I think the portion sizes were fine and the food was REALLY good. I had the pork bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad. Delicious!!!! Especially the Potato salad. I will eat here again.

This place is fabulous. Want bigger portions? Order more. Have a pretzel or a soup or salad among with your share of the city's best wurst. And don't miss the handmade ginger snap ice cream sandwiches! This joins my fave raves.

Wow, this place is so simple yet fantastic. I tried all the salads and the bratwurst. Everything was worth 5 stars.
FoodinYVR
Decent portion for me. Food 3.5/4 environment 2/5
Currywurst with Classic Pork ThĆ¼ringer $8 - The curried ketchup wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. It was okay but nothing too exciting.
Southern BBQ Turkey $1 - I liked my Pork better than turkey. The Pork was firmer than the turkey.
Crispy fries - it wasn't that crispy. It would be better it if was double fried.
Pretzel Board $7.5 - Ours came with 3 stinky cheesy sauce. We had a little argument which one was the stinkiest.
Kohlrabi Kohlslaw $3.5 - little too bland for me. I would like it to be a bit more sour (like the gherkins from the pretzel board)
Hot Hot Hot - not a place to go in the summer. There are 2 fans with no AC. One of them wasn't even turned on. Luckily we were sitting at the big table with a window by the door. There is only one table for 6 by the door and 5 tables of 4.

Fresh concept. Modern atmosphere and great taating food. Tried their entire menu (they have two main options) and both were tasty.

Great Taste - Small Portions. Went for a currywurst and I have to say that I was loving it until I got hungry again an hour after eating. The food was great but the portions were too small for my liking. In this area you should be able to get full on $10.00, but at Bestie it will take you about $14-$20 if you are a normal sized man. I think they should do it like the Germans do - add a whole lot more fries into the deal.

Amazing food! (for small people). Although delicious, the food seems to have been portioned for the appetite of a 4'9" Southeast Asian great-great-grandmother. However, being a 7 foot tall male, I would have to order four $9 meals to be satisfied. To further clarify, the sausage you receive is smaller than the $1.49 hotdog (albeit horse+sawdust) at Costco down the street.

Bestie exudes a low-fi, craptastic, indie hipster vibe in spades, evidenced by the hand painted paper menus. This place puts forth a great effort, and what they do, they do well. We had ample face time with the manager, and found out that Currywurst (sausage, with fries and sprinkled with curry powder) is a very popular German street food. Beer is definitely the featured beverage at Bestie, available in 8 and 12 ounce glasses and the massive 24 ounce white beer steins, with tap selections from local microbrews

Designed by Peter Cardu alum Scott & Scott architects (how refreshing - not a reclaimed barn board in sight!), Bestie sets a new design standard for Vancouver restaurants. Serving German street foodcurry wurst is a late night classic of sliced bratwurst with curry ketchup and Kennebec friesplus great sides like kohlrabi and apple coleslaw and warm pretzels with house made mustard and pickle, we predict it will be summer's funnest Riesling and beer fueled nightspot. It's helmed by two design-savvy gents Clinton and Dane, who pulled the exact colour palette from 1974 Volkswagons for their vinyl banquette seating for a fresh and inspired look. Planks of BC spruce line the walls, and double as serving platters (an economy of materials was part of the design philosophy), plus German whimsy kicks in the authentic cuckoo clock on the far wall and 16 ounce white ceramic beer steins. Picky Diner
The place was small but the white interior, open space and smart arrangements did not make us feel crowded at all. Bratwurst and Sauerkraut was generously portioned. The sausage was seasoned and cooked well. Loved those fries: thick, crispy, and delicious with the house made mustard. I ordered Currywurst, with the choice of Elk Cumberland sausage. The curry ketchup was interesting ā€“ curry was very subtle, balancing the acidity of ketchup, and making the flavour of the elk sausage come through nicely. However I wish I had ordered the fries instead. I paid an extra dollar for a salad intend of fries. Although it was delicious with spinach, dried cranberries, walnuts, and creamy dressing, the salad was rather small. I left the place still a little hungry. Overall I quite enjoyed the food. But would I come back? I think it is a little pricey for how simple it is. I would rather eat it on the street more often.

Personally, I think Bestie, a German sausage parlour, is a fun addition to Chinatown thanks in part to their happy, vibey atmosphere and their willingness to integrate into the neighbourhood. Letā€™s move on to the FFS categories. Food: Thereā€™s a lot of sausage here. For your currywurst or sauerkraut plate, you can choose between 4 sausages, from bison, to pork, to turkey, to vegetarian (tofu?). I opted for the Smokey Bison Currywurst and Iā€™m pretty certain you canā€™t go wrong with any of the meat options. The sausage comes sliced up and bathed in ketchup and Bestieā€™s special curry powder (there are extra shakers on the table if you want more). If you order the Sausage and Sauerkraut, you get a whole sausage with fries and some pungently delicious sauerkraut. For $8 this is an appropriate filler and for a l

I really liked the decor, service, and ambiance of this place, but the portions of food were smaller than I expected. I was also a bit disappointed with my currywurst, as Iā€™ll explain below.

Sausages. Ā Beers. Ā Besties. When the going gets tough, sometimes only the perfect trifecta of German beers and sausages with besties can save your soul after a long week and Bestie Ā killed it on all three points last Friday night. Ā Itā€™s a good thing friends, Matt and Emily, were there to accompany me or else my night out might have been a bit of a letdown. A trendy little hideaway concealed inconspicuously between the shops and restaurants of Vancouverā€™s Chinatown, if it werenā€™t for the murmurs and whispers of an up and coming haus of sausage, youā€™d never think youā€™d be able to get your hands on some wurst in this historic part of town. Wurst indeed though and not just any wurst at that. Ā Youā€™ve got your Currywurst , your Bratwurst , your Turkey Chorizo Wurst , and yourĀ Rosemary Lamb Wurst. Best eaten when a beering because if ever there was a moment you felt the need to devour a dinner of curry ketchup smothered sausage atop a bed of deep fried spuds, trust me when I say this is it. If the beer hasnā€™t started flowing prior to arrival, Bestieā€™s got you covered with their small selection of local and German beers. Ā A nice accompaniment to the meal, it wouldnā€™t feel quite right without it. Ā Be sure to check out theirĀ Drink SpecialĀ of the day because you never know what you might be missing. Old Asian ladies love their ginger so the refreshingly spicyĀ Munich MuleĀ was exactly what this old Asian lady was looking for. What would a German haus of sausage be without the pretzel? Ā $4 Pretzel and MustardĀ - we had to have it. Ā To share a lone pretzel between three people is no easy feat and some fingers may have been lost in the process, but we overcame. Accompanied by aĀ Dijon MustardĀ and two grainy made in house mustards, this chewy pretzel is a fun way to kick start any sausage dinner. Once the pretzel is gone and the Wurst arrives, thatā€™s when the party really gets started. Ā There are two mains to pick from ā€“ Currywurst Ā as well

My hands still smell like currywurst. Not that I'm complaining. There's nothing more beautiful than a fat bratwurst smothered in a copious amount of mysterious ketchup, on a bed of fries. Glorious, just glorious. What can I say? I like my starch and protein! ;) Can you tell I'm typing this in the wee hours of the night? I'm not drunk though...LOL I went to Soft Peaks after, like any good food blogger would ;) There wasn't a lineup hehe. (I was expecting one.) Turns out they use soy lecithin in their soft serve (found out after I had licked it). My tongue starting itching. So I had to throw away $5. There's nothing more saddening them trashing a perfectly good icecream. Truly disheartening. How cool is this place? The little holes in the walls look like bird houses! :D Currywurst w/ Classic Pork Thuringer $8.50 Ā 3/5 stars Ā Saucy, sweet, and a wee bit spicy!! A cross between curry/ketchup, perfectly tangy with some spice at the end. The pork thuringer was thick, juicy, and porky! The fries were pretty decent: I liked how they kept some of the skin on! Ā Some reviews online said that the portion sizes were too small but

... ham and cheese were passable, both in amt and quantity, but still lacked something; waffle touch too doughy, not crisp at all; also too much waffle to toppings...

....the curried ketchup is really good. Sausage was OK, fries weren't crispy, but then we took this to go and ate it about 20 mins later.

The name is catchy, though I am not sure how it ties in with the restaurant. Located between Chinatown and Gastown this little sausage shop is certainly a hidden gem. My guest had heard good things about it, so now given the chance we made this our after drinking stop. The blue glow of their sausage shaped light drew me in like a mosquito to a flame. And the row of seats under their restaurantā€™s logo made me stay with its photo op. With a line at 10pm these chairs available outside gave those waiting a chance to rest. Though as a snack stop the turn around was fairly quick. 15 minutes top was our estimated wait and we were seated within 5. Inside it was a simple setting. White furniture in a white walled room. Framed art here, a wooden cuckoo clocked there. A row of booths set against the wall and a row of stools by the counter. The kitchen was completely open, with front row seats and clear visibility from the bar. The kitchen was tiled in white and fitted with stainless steel equipme

The line-ups don't lie! This place is great - we just dinner'd at Bestie and devoured their currywurst (with a traditional Brat, smothered in curry sauce on crispy fries & served with mayo) and sausage & sauerkraut (with a smoked Bison sausage, tangy kraut, fries and a side of crisp gherkins) - then washed it down with Munich's own Schneider-Weisse & a fab grapefruit radler. Cannot wait for my next visit here.

Of course, this Chinatown sausage and beer parlourā€™s currywurst with veggie wurst isnā€™t the same as what youā€™d throw together after a long day at work. Indeed, the ketchup is curried, the fries are marginally better, and the German-inspired dish comes with a special fork (pommesgabel).

We settled on Bestie, a crowd funded sausage shop in the heart of Chinatown. Their story is most eloquently told on their website here. Ā Crowd funding a restaurant makes sense to me and I hope to see more of it in the future!Ā With a few extra bodies this week we all met up at the restaurant around 2 pm. We were seated at the bar, separated by the servers pass, but eventually given a table! What we ateĀ Pretzel Board A pretzel, farmers sausage, stinky cheese sauce, mustards, and preserves I found their pretzels just okay. Quite chewy and not too flavourful. The cheese sauce was not too strong, definitely had that unique ā€˜funkā€™ of an aged cheese, and was enjoyed by everyone! The preserves were (off memor

The salad and sausage were delicious but the thing I enjoyed the most at Bestie was their curried ketchup. Itā€™s a condiment simply made by combining curry spices and ketchup, but I found it addictive. Like a metronomeā€™s steady hand, I found myself grabbing a French fry, dipping it into the spiced ketchup and then raising into my mouth. In an even rhythm, I repeated the process: fry, ketchup, bite, fry, ketchup, bite. I only stopped when I realize I had eaten every fry in my order.

Located right at Pender and Columbia, Ā itā€™s hard not to miss it, really. With much of East Pender not seeing a fresh coat of paint in decades, its glowing white walls will likely grab your attention from the street.

Okay, hereā€™s the down low: very moist inside, yet not greasy. LOL, I just realized that itā€™s ā€œlow downā€ and not the reverse. The spiced ketchup was an absolute winner. It was sweet, but not sickly sweet, and well-seasoned.

Bestie is a new German sausage parlour located in Chinatown on East Pender. They specialize in currywurst, which is a traditional German street food dish made with french fries topped with sausage and curry ketchup. The inside of the store is bright, minimalist and modern. It has a cute atmosphere and it is a perfect place for a quick meal. I came here with Curtis from Foodobyte and Kirsty from Eating with Kirby to try some currywurst. Both Curtis and I went with their signature currywurst with a classic bratwurst sausage. The pork bratwurst was very good. It was juicy and had a good amount of fat, but it wasnā€™t greasy or too heavy. The curry ketchup was also delicious. It had a nice curry flavour that brought everything together well. The fries were good, but not great. I would have preferred them to be more crispy, but they soaked up the curry ketchup well. I also had a pretzel and mustard. The pretzel had a good chewy consistency and was salted on the outside. It came with two diffe

Eating With Kirby
A new (hipster) sausage parlor called Bestie opened up in Chinatown a few weeks ago and they serve traditional German street food like warm salted pretzels, currywurst, and sauerkraut.Ā Apparently, they now open till 2:30am serving late night sausages through their little window. I'm sure clubbers will find that convenient. They serve four types of wurst, the most popular being Pork Thuringer, followed by BBQ Turkey ( $1), Smokey Bison ( $1), and Veggie Wurst. The staff and co-owners Clinton and Dane were extremely welcoming, always refilling our water, and following up with us to make sure we liked our sausages. :D I wanted something a bit more substantial than the curr

Iā€™ve been missing Germany lots since Iā€™ve left there. My friends have always told me to try Bestie. I actually avoided it for a bit to avoid being disappointed from trying the real thing to a novelty thing. But I was wrong. This tastes the same as the street vendors back in Germany. I mean the only real difference is the price (waaay cheaper back in Deustchland) but Vancouver is expensive in general anyway. They had watermelon feta salad. I had this with my black beer. So tasty! Lunch of champs. I love beer. And hereā€™s the winner: Currywurst. Iā€™ve been looking for a good place with curry ketchup. I tried it at Fritz on Davie and was disappointed how sweet it was in comparison to what I had in Germany. Bestie gets it right. I wasnā€™t super impressed with the pretzel I ate, but the currywurst was good hands down. Just wishing there was a cheaper take-out method, but otherwise I would come back. 3.5/5 The post Bestie appeared first on gastrofork .

Dubbed as a beer parlour specializing in currywurst, Bestie is open for lunch, dinners, and they even have a late night take out window until 3am! In addition to sausages,Ā they also have a huge selection of local beers (and some German specialties), and pretzels! Inside Bestie Bestie is fairly different from the typical Chinatown destinations. Theyā€™re really bright, minimally decorated, and filled with plenty of hipster charm. The staff are also all really cool and friendly! Plenty of booth seating They donā€™t take reservations, so

For the uninformed, currywurst is a German staple: sausage with curried ketchup with fries.

My coworkers were looking for a place to have lunch. Near our office, there isnā€™t a lot of choices, so we were delighted that there was a new eatery in Chinatown that serves sausages. Iā€™ve heard much of the buzz online and suggested this place for lunch. Bestie was inspired by German street food and specialize in hand crafted sausages and pretzels made with the best local ingredients. They donā€™t serve beer yet, but once their license is approved, itā€™ll be a full German experience. The interior is quite nice but itā€™s hard to fit large groups during the lunch time rush. There is about 5 booths and some bar seating. I came with 5 of my coworkers, so we knew it would be a tight squeeze. We grabbed a booth and brought over 2 stools. They have a lot of stools around for that purpose. Bedfordā€™s Ginger Beer ($2.50) itā€™s non-alcoholic, but itā€™s refreshing for a hot summerā€™s day. It was a rainy Friday night when Spouse and I found ourselves in the window booth at Bestie, a little German-ish joint in Chinatown where the beer is big and the sausages are everything you never knew you always wanted. Spouse claimed he hadnā€™t heard of it before, even though I have mentioned it at least 30 times since it opened last year, but was quite delighted to be there and discover the menu. Local, sustainably raised meats. Sauerkraut. Beer. Fresh baked pretzels. But is it where to eat in Vancouver? Currywurst ā€“ So Wrong Itā€™s Right Hold on, step back. Do you know about currywurst? If not, itā€™s time you found out. Currywurst is a German dish of sausage (preferably pork) slathered in curried ketchup and served over French fries, the kind of thing thatā€™s so wrong itā€™s right. It hits every note ā€“ sweet, salty, porky ā€“ and goes perfectly with a 24 oz. stein of cold, cold beer. Bestieā€™s version takes currywurst slightly upscale ā€“ the meat is excellent quality, and the sausage is moist

Overall it was a satisfying experience. Our bill was a bit over $30, which may be a little high for those who want a filling meal. I would come back for the bratwurst though, then maybe wander over to New Town for fresh apple turnover.

Upon entry to Bestie (itā€™s exterior is quite nondescript and hard to spot on a visually loaded Pender Street) youā€™re greeted to a stark whiteā€¦.room. Itā€™s an extremely small space, with accents of colour influenced

The restaurant definitely has more of a hipster vibe than a Chinatown vibe. There were very chillaxed servers in slicked-back hair and high-waisted jeans, male cooks with man-buns and torn white t-shirts, patrons with big black thick-rimmed glassesā€¦you know, the works. I guess thatā€™s what gentrification and ā€œrevitalizationā€ does to whatā€™s supposed to be preserved as a historical heritage neighborhood. But in the end progress is inevitable.

Bestie is a German street-food influenced sausage shop that calls Chinatown home. They got their start through the crowd funding indiegogo platform, tempting patrons with promises of magical sausage cards and a really good time. It seems the people of Vancouver (literally) ate it up surpassing their funding goal and ensuring Chinatown residents would get a solid source of Currywurst.
