Review Stepho's Souvlaki Greek Tavern - Vancouver

Fresh and flavourful Greek food! 🥘 This place is super busy and popular, and served amazing Greek food! Certainly one of the best Greek places I've been, with generous portion and amazing flavors. 🥰 The pricing is just right for large platters. I ordered a roast lamb and my friend ordered a souvlaki platter. The food was so tasty but the large portion meant we both couldn't finish

Husband and I decided on a whim a couple weeks ago to try Stepho’s after nearly 5 years of not going. Stepho’s has always been known for their generous and delicious portions. So we went in with some pretty high expectations. There are Covid protocols in place - masks, plastic dividers, vaccine passport checks, etc. Super friendly service from everyone, especially from our waiter. We ordered the Calamari and Roast Lamb plate. Huge portions as expected. Calamari tasted fresh, crispy batter and soft tender inside. Salad, potato and rice was great as well. The Roast Lamb was cooked to perfection, and fell right off the bone. Everything was nicely seasoned. All in all, Stepho’s is still the same as it was 5 years ago - wonderful and a must try if you’re in the mood for Greek cuisine in the area.

Restaurant itself is fantastic. Cozy place, awesome waitresses, nice sittings, very authentic area, but the food!!! It just didn't taste awesome, looks like somebody just didn't cook them with passion. The spices don't work with the foods. This place needs better food in it. However I loved the Calamari, it was very real. Anissa, was great. She just host us like a real caring waitress.

We are so fortunate to have this place just a few minutes walk away from home. It never gets old for us. Delicious high quality plates. Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely restaurant.

It's cozy and lovely. The food is delicious. The portions are so big that one is more than enough for 2 people. The prices are reasonable as well. The place was so old and the design was so simple that it all seemed to be a time travel.

World class Greek food at the same price as a Big Mac Meal, coupled with a cozy environment and fantastic customer service! If you want a solid dining experience, Stephos will rock your world! Chicken was crunchy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside, with the perfect amount charbroiled. The salad was beautifully made with fresh feta, and veggies. The rice was fresh, rich and was cooked to perfection. All around, I give you a solid 5 stars!

It’s my family’s favourite place but my recent visit was bit disappointing. It took about 45-50 minutes to get my food when the restaurant was half full and my lamb chop was mostly burnt. The rest of the food like calamari dinner, cheese balls and roast lamb were still great though!

What the heck happened to this place? By no means was this a high end eatery, but it used to be reliable in the sense that you knew you'd be getting massive portions that tasted good. But lately....my god. Ordered through Uber Eats today. Was excited and starving. Opened up the containers and I was not pleasantly surprised. The potatoes in all of our orders were charred, the rice was flavorless, and we couldn't find the tzaziki sauce at one point because they piled all of the calamari on top of it.... The only things we were happy with were the fries and pita bread. Disappointing. I'll probably come back to eat here again because I'm hoping this was a one off, but this meal was meh.

very bad experience at this place, staff who was serving to us was sick, touching are food with same hand with wiping her nose. we didn't feel like eat are food.

It was a good dining experience. Friendly staff...until the bill arrived.

I was having dinner with four friends and the server, David, had split the bill two ways -- Seat 1 and Seat 2, and we're not sure why he did that.

Seat 1 was for one person and then David combined the other three people's bill as Seat 2. I mentioned to him that Seat 2's bill is three individuals so it should be split. He said he knows that, did the calculations in his head on the spot and told us our individual totals. I actually didn't hear him say that (whereas my friend did) so that was my error. I repeated again that Seat 2 should be split. David got a little irritated and said, "You aren't listening", and repeated himself again. We still didn't quite understand what was going on because we were so fixated on Seat 2 being three people's bill and that was a mistake on our part. Then David went back to his register and re-printed our bills separately and came back saying, "Here are your separate bills because you didn't believe me".

David, if you see this review, I apologize for not hearing what you were explaining but you didn't have to add that comment about us not believing you. My friends and I talked about what happened and we all agree we misunderstood the bill because we never saw a bill split in that way before.

Not a huge issue, I still tipped 18% even though our meal ended on a sour note.

I'm in love with the ambience of this restaurant- it truly is decorated with Greek vibes. When my friend and I went, it was just before Halloween and the waiter was dressed in a cute Minnie mouse costume, which I loved. We each ordered one small Stephos' souvlakia. I ordered the chicken one, which I really enjoyed. Even though I ordered the small size, the portion was really big and I was left full. They also offer free pita bread to accompany your dish.

The prices depicted on their Zomato are different; when I went it was more expensive. I think the souvlakia was around $2 more when I went. But it's definitely worth it- I loved the food there so much!

The roast lamb was good. Our waitress was good. I was however disappointed to be charged extra for tzatziki!! How can you eat pita bread at a Greek restaurant without tzatziki????? Also, an extra charge for subbing the potatoes for salad. Cheap....

Very popular Greek restaurant on Davie Street. Portions are still big but prices have increased a lot in recent years so it's similar to many Greek restaurants. The tables are sometimes not very clean with crumbs all over them and the servers can be inattentive but it's still a decent place to dine in when craving souvlaki.

This is one of the places in Vancouver where you’d normally wait for almost an hour to be seated luckily enough when we got here it was just a bit almost lunch time so we got a table pretty quickly after we got seated a party of 40 people arrived (yay for our timing!). We got the Saganaki and the Lamb Souvlaki which were both really yum and their serving is really big! The staff were very friendly and I like the quaintness of the place. I will definitely go back to this restaurant when I’m back in Vancouver! ❤️

This is a comfortable, casual Greek restuarant in Davie Village (they have another location on Robson) that's well-known for serving their entrees in large portions. Although their lamb is probably their most popular dish, being not the biggest fan of lamb, I opted to get a large Lasagana, which was tasty and quite filling. I also took their Moussaka to-go, which I reheated for lunch the next day, and quite enjoyed that dish as well. Unfortunately, as with most other places, they have significantly raised their prices over the years, although their current prices are still fairly reasonable. The service differs a bit depending on which server you get. While my server was more than decent, there was one guy named "Clinton" who seemed to be just exceptional: he introduced himself to everyone he was serving, went over all of the daily specials (which my server didn't), was attentive, and above all, was very friendly and cheerful. I'd highly recommend getting him, if possible.

Large Lasagna ($14.95):
4/5
The lasagna came with a small side of salad and a piece of pita bread. It was piping hot and topped with a good amount of delicious melted cheese that was crispy around the edges and gooey in the middle. The noodles were perfectly cooked and tender without being mushy. It was pretty "dry" in that there wasn't much sauce (which I didn't mind as I'm not the biggest fan of tomato sauce), but had a generous amount of ground beef. Personally, I did find it to be just a tad underseasoned. I didn't really care much for the salad, which consisted of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and olives dressed in a simple sweet vinaigrette. The pita, on the other hand, was delicious: soft and fluffy with a really nice chewy texture. Portion-wise, the dish didn't look very big, but was very filling (probably because of all the tasty cheese) and I was actually quite stuffed after finishing it.

Moussaka ($15.95):
*disclaimer: I didn't eat this right away, but took it home and reheated it for lunch the next day, and I don't know how much that might have affected the flavours*
4/5
This consisted of layers of ground beef, potatoes and eggplants that's topped with a thick layer of thick bechamel, and was again served with a small salad as well as pita bread. Unfortunately, since I took the moussaka to-go, it did end up falling apart a bit. Fortunately, what it lacked in appearance, it made up for it in taste. The ground beef was well-seasoned and flavourful, and the vegetables were tender. I did find the bechamel to be a bit bland and gummy, but still enjoyable. While not as filing as the lasagna, the portion was still pretty good.

Terrible, cheap food. This place is nothing like it used to be. Got food poisoning from chicken souvlaki. Are meals were missing items that should have been included.

Lamb was so good and tender. Good taste. Barbeque spareribs was also good, very tender.. Very satisfied and also the serving was worth it.....

Stepho's provided a pretty great ambience while serving a decent large plate of food for a reasonable price.

This place is consistently popular with lineups into the street, in all seasons.

If you value quantity over quality then this would be a good place to go!

Stepho's combines atmosphere, location, and excellent food for a winning combination. On a hot summer night the terrace seating boasts a plant overhang and lends a level of intimacy and privacy. The music selection is tasteful and lends an authentic vibe to the restaurant.

I tried the eggplant masala, and the portions were large but not overdone. There was more than enough in one portion for two people to leave sated and potentially with leftovers. The food itself was flavourful and balanced.

Our waiter was friendly, but perhaps had trouble balancing speaking to the guests with faster service. We waited about fifteen minutes for him to come after being seated, and an additional forty for our food despite the restaurant only being at around half occupancy.

Atmosphere: 4/5
Food: 5/5
Service: 4/5

We, me and my boyfriend, had the opportunity to visit this place a month back. We ordered Sangria, lamb souvlaki, pita with pork and chips.

Sangria was very standard, my boyfriend enjoyed his lamb souvlaki very much, and I also tasted it, the lamb pieces were succulent, and it tasted awesome.
But the pork that was served was chewy, it looked like it was undercooked and I couldn't eat it at all. I recommend them to check the pork when they serve.

We had the opportunity to visit this restaurant today, the ambience was good. We ordered one glass of Sangria, lamb souvlaki and pita pork with chips.

To start with Sangria, it was a standard one, as expected.
Lamb souvlaki was ordered by my friend, and it was wonderful. The lamb was juicy enough.

But what made my mood off was the quality of pork given to me, it was chewy. It was the main attraction of my plate, and it didn't satisfy me at all.
Saibal Modak
It was a pleasant experience for me. Although my friend was not happy with the pork she ordered. Service was a bit delayed due to huge rush and less number of servers. Rice, bread etc was very good. Meat was a bit chewy.
Pouru Patell
I have nothing bad to say about this place. The food is 10/10, The price is reasonable, the ambience is perfect for a romantic date, the music is catchy and the service is quick. The Greek burger and lasagne are my two favourite dishes
J.Grab
Nothing to write home about, has the exact same menu as every other generic Greek place and the quality is just average. Service is slow even when the restaurant is empty. Portion sizes are good. I ordered calamari and it did not come hot.

Worst food I have ever had in Vancouver. Popularity must be for big portions. I don't think the prices were good so not good value. Would never recommend
This is an OMG greek resturant .. Its a Must try when you are In Vancouver .. you gotta Plan to wait in queue sometimes for an hour .. in Vancouver where it Rains alot you gotta Be ready for a rain coat while waiting outside .. when You get in and see The quality an Portion that is Hard to finish .. you will forget about the wait and enjoy the taste of heaven .

Waiters are all Davie street residents .who are so respectful and nice .

Enjoy it

Food is ok, lots of rice, not much meat. Spices good, potatoes great. Price and value has gone downhill as of 2017. Large portion only gets double meat, nothing else it seems. Stay with small of better yet go to a swharma place and get a platter
GRIZZLY
A solid and time honored Greek restaurant with everything you expect from the potato to the perfectly cooked and perfectly spiced meats. Comfort food at its finest!

Verdict: Heavy, but affordable hearty rustic food. Warms the soul

What can I say about this place that hasn't been said before? This staple/dinosaur of Vancouver food scene has provided affordable Greek cuisine to the masses/broke college kids for decades now. Prices have gone up reasonably with the times, but it is still a must visit for me every winter. I would have never tried Greek food if it wasn't for this place and its prices back in the day.

The best Greek food ever! I still miss the food sometimes...no other Greek restaurant has even come close.
Not just that, the service is super quick (even though the place is ALWAYS full), and it's so prettily done up.
Very busy restaurant. The best dish for this place would be the roast lamb. Everything else is pretty mediocre. Pita bread was too dense and cold. Service isn't great. Would I go back? Probably not. There are better Greek places with much better service.

I have been dining at Stephos for over 15 years and the food used to be very tasty. However yhe past few times I visited I always ordered a large lamb souvlaki and the portion size has gotten smaller. The lamb was dry and had fat in it and was not seasoned. Rice was mushy and the potatoes were hard as rock. Will not be returning. I heard the changed ownership and that may be the reason.

March, 23, 2017

I tried their roasted lamb ( not as big portion as online post said, the outside meat was crispy but burnt, inside meat was falling apart, but too salty, their potatoes are extremely salty and hard), snails & prawn with fries (extremely salty and oily) and baklava (not much layers of pastry), their bread is not crispy outside and hard) for lunch with parents.

Service is good, but food quality....Won't go there..

A couple people have been telling me this is the go-to place in Vancouver for Greek food, and I finally got to try it out. I was also told that there would be long line-ups, but that wasn’t the case at all — the restaurant was pretty empty on a Friday evening, although it was quite early (around 5:30). It did get busier by the time we left, but there was never a line.

Possibly my worst dining experience ever. SLOW SERVICE, FALSE ADVERTISING (LYING), RUDE MANAGER.
My friend and I ordered Saganaki, which arrived more than 1/2 hour after we had ordered it. After the first bite, we agreed that it was the worst Saganaki we had ever eaten. A few minutes later the waitress came by to enquire whether we were enjoying it, to which we replied that we were not.
She informed us that it wasn't really a traditional Saganaki, but Mozzarella masquerading as "their version of Saganaki". We weren't impressed by the false advertising of having Saganaki as a menu item when they don't actually offer the usual cheeses that one would expect when ordering that dish.
The waitress went off to find the manager, who arrived a considerable time later, by which time we were well into the main course. She first told us that they don't actually specify what kind of cheese it is, even though it is listed on the menu as Saganaki, which would lead unsuspecting diners to expect a traditional dish - not an inferior substitution! Then she told us that since we had eaten the Mozzarella, we would have to pay for it.
We'll never be back!

Terrible service, one of the servers told me my bill was $18.26 when it was actually $16.75 and have so much attitude when I told her it was wrong.
Food
I've been to Stepho's before and love their food, but this time it was just a bit too ridiculous. So our party of 8 arrived at 8pm and we were told there were 2 parties with reservations at 8:30pm and so they cannot give us the big tables. After we arrived, parties of 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s were seated. While we were waiting, we kept asking how much longer it would take for our turn. The waitress kept saying the next available big table will be ours. That's fine, except for the problem that there are only 3 big tables, 2 of which are reserved for 8:30 and the other one had just been seated a bit before we arrived. Naturally, you would assume that the waitress would start making arrangements to seat our party of 8 by combining some tables together. However, at 9:15pm when we asked again, after multiple parties were all seated, she said she was waiting for the next big table. In other words, she had no intention of combining tables for us and was going to make us wait until the next big table opened up . I've been to Stepho's before and knew we were going to have to wait a bit, but them not even trying to accommodate us is kind of ridiculous. She told us only several tables could be combined but she never even worked towards doing so. I asked could she not have left those tables empty and when two tables side by side became available, to seat us? She told us she cannot leave tables empty because it was busy. So, she kept seating the smaller tables, while we were left waiting for one of the big tables, which would probably not open up until 10:00pm. At this point, I talked to the manager, and obviously there is nothing they can do because they are full. However, I did mention that almost half the tables seated, came AFTER we arrived and they were all seated before us. He mentioned that only some tables could be combined and pointed at the ones which can be, which by the way, were all tables that were seated after we had arrived at 8pm. At 9:30pm, after an hour and a half wait, we just left, which I think is perfectly reasonable time to wait and the fact that they were not even trying to seat us.
**To be fair, their food is great for their price, but their service is mediocre. For those who have larger parties, make you keep requesting for them to combine their tables together or else you would be waiting for possibly over 2 hours for a "big" table, when they could have just combined several small ones

Food is always great here, service is amazing! I love going to Stepho's (Robson) with my friends who are from out of town. I was there 3 times this week in total, that is how much I love their food.

I only had food issues with the Davie location only with take outs.

Two days ago, my boyfriend and I got a food poisoning from their take out. This happened before where our meat came with blood. Last time this happened, it was lamb so we took it a part and refryed it in our kitchen, was fine, slightly mad though but was okay.

Two weeks ago we ordered the lamb again (we only ever order the same thing), instead of lamb, we got chicken in our order and it was bloody on the inside. This time it was chicken, we were upset but the restaurant was already closed so we refryed like last time. My boyfriend did't care and we were way too hungry. We don't even know if we paid more or not, we probably paid extra for lamb and got chicken.

Two days ago, I got my beef, came with blood... again. Once again.. it was past midnight so we decided to just refry and eat. Within a couple hours I experience abdominal pain and flu-ish like feeling. I ended up staying up for 5 hours because stomach wasn't settling well. My boyfriend has it worse. My pain went away after a day and a half. Its been three days and he still can't eat food. Claims that he can still smell the stephos in his body.

This is a serious matter! you guys need to be on top of your orders! Bloody meat is not acceptable!
A friend suggested a different greek restaurant, so we are going to give that place a try. We don't want to spend 40 dollars to get the wrong food that is going to give us food poisoning.

Had the lamb. Lamb was excellent, Greek potatoes top notch, veggies good and pita fresh. Service fast and friendly. Prices very reasonable-. Would definitely go again.

Had the chicken souvlaki and fries, the main was excellent.. But the McCain microwave French fries have got to go! If you are going to say you sell french fries, you should probly not sell old wet shoelaces and make me pay for them.

Great greek place with good prices and generous portions. I always leave with left overs to take home. Only downside is they don't take reservations. Go either early or later to avoid line ups. My faves: roast lamb, mussels, cheeseballs & calamari.

Great food memories

Coming back to Vancouver after couple of year, I have thought of visiting Vancouver's favorite Greek restaurant. I have very good memories of dining in this place. however they have ruined it like Athen's ruins.
As long as I remember , you had to wait for hours to get inside and dine. it used to worth waiting there for hour to eat that nice food. however this visit changed my idea completely.
After waiting 45min we finally got a seat and ordered 6 different food for 4 of us. all of them came to table slightly warm . chicken was dry as cardboard. Shrimps were in pool of oil ( called butter in menu) . calamari's were the best bet between everything else.
food servers were busy as hell and didn't have enough time to respond to your question and they keep asking you if you are done ( hint time to leave)
One thing I am sure of, I will not go back to that place again.

Restaurant ambiance: simple 3.50

Staff : need more training 2.0

Food variety: Good 3.0

Food quality: Bad 2.0

food choices: Good 3.0

speed of service: ok 3.0

appetizer: Ok 2.5

Great food . Good service .Had to wait for a long time to a get a seat .. I like this one more than the one on Robson .. And extremely filling . The funny things is the difference between their large and small plates is a stick of kabab .. This one is more intimate

A while ago, my aunt and I decided to have lunch at our family favorite greek restaurant. I was expecting a long line because the last time I was around the city stepho's always always have long lines. Upon arriving, I was shocked to see they are no long lines and the restaurant was not even full. My aunt said, since they increase their price they haven't had any lines anymore.

Nevertheless, I need to go to stepho's because this is the only place that has the yummiest snails and prawns. As always I was not disappointed by it, definitely be back for more snails and prawns before going back to the Philippines.

Hadn't been to Stephos for a while so I decided to head there for lunch. Not as cheap as it used to be, prices have gone up but that has not deterred people from coming. Got there at around 1 and there was a huge line up like always. While the portions are still large, the food was kind of bland. It came super fast, but was missing taste. Even my staples, chicken souvlaki and calamari were underwhelming.
FOOD FOR BUDDHA
After a visit at St. Pauls' Hospital, Buddha Boy and I needed dinner. It was almost 10pm and we were starving. Not wanting to wait any longer, Buddha Boy suggested to go for Greek food at Stepho's Souvlaki Greek Taverna, which was just around the corner.

We don't know much about Greek cuisine but Stepho's has been on our list to try for a very long time. Actually, Buddha Boy and I have been to Stepho's on different occasions, but that was long before we met. :p

Kalamari was our first appetizer. The squid pieces were cut too thin that the usual chewy crunch was no where to be found. Uneven coating of batter also made the squid rings unpleasant to eat. Honestly, the portion was not that big. The illusion of jam packing all the food onto a small side serving plate did all the wonders.

Our second appetizer was the Spanakopita, which was a disappointment. These puff pastries were burnt in a lot of areas. The burnt bitterness destroyed the spinach-cheese stuffing and made the whole package quite hard to consume.

Buddha Boy had a large order of Chicken Souvlakia, which came with two chicken skewers, rice pilaf, roasted potato, Greek salad and pita bread. The gently seasoned chicken was tender but not moist. There were grilled marks on the skewers but the meat didn't have much char fragrance. The accompanied salad and potato wedges were pretty boring.

I had the BBQ Spareribs Platter, which had the baby back spareribs with barbecue sauce, rice pilaf, vege briami, roasted potato, Greek salad and pita bread. The ribs were smothered in an overly sweet and salty barbecue sauce. The rib meat was tender but some parts were a bit dry and the rack did not have that fall-off-the-bone balance. The Greek-style oven-roasted vegetables had a mellow tangy savoriness that went remarkably well with the al-dente rice pilaf, which had a soft broth aroma with a quiet onion sweetness.

Generally speaking, when one's hungry, any food should taste good, right? Not in this case. While our tummies were full, we left the restaurant feeling disappointed and unsatisfied.

Many people proclaimed that the portions are huge and the prices are cheap, but we beg to differ. We thought the portions did not portrayed the equivalence in its price points. Service was friendly but sparse and slow. Perhaps having two Downtown locations had something to do with its fame.

My husband and I had a wonderful dining experience. Our waiter was prompt, courteous and very hard working. The whole time we were there the place was hoppin' and our waiter was on point! We shared a hummus plate which was so good. The texture was velvety and with a rich garlic taste. I had the lamb souvlaki, which was on point, and my husband had the moussaka and both portions were more than ample. It was a satisfying dining experience and we both left full and happy.

This place is not what it used to be...

I generally understand food price increases because I guess inflation is just another fact of life - everything goes up eventually. What doesn't really make sense to me is the price difference between large and small souvlaki set at $5.00 each. When asked what exactly the difference is between the large and the small order, the restaurant gave a simple answer that it's one skewer more/less. I'm quite sure that 1 skewer at $5.00 is a bit of a price gouge. And in addition to that, when I asked for a bit more tzatziki sauce for dipping, it is to my surprise that it will cost me almost a dollar more for 1.5 ounce.

Money grab..? I think so. But the dining experience and the food is not worth the price no more. There are other Greek places in town that can offer better.

Adorable restaurant, great location, amazing food, TERRIBLE SERVICE! I went to the beach this afternoon and stopped in at Stepho's for a late lunch with a friend. She had been there a few times previously and raved about the food. She was right! The food was delicious but unfortunately our server was unfriendly, miserable and horrible at her job. As a server in the past myself I was astonished at how rude she was. She didn't smile once, barely communicated with us (never once asked us how our food was), and didn't even acknowledge us when we said thank you, just walked away!!!
Denise
Recommended place by a friend.
The lamb chops and shrimp were really good. Meatball was too dry. Caesar salad was okay. Value for money. Overall, I would come back and try their other dishes.

Food was great. Loved the mussels and prawn Souvlaki. Service was well and good although could be improved. The ambiance made me feel like I'm actually somewhere in Greece. Will be back again!

Padaika dish is bit dry a few times I ate there but their roast lamb is quite juicy but I wouldn't say it's exceptional or great. They give you little bit bigger portion by giving you lots of vegetables. The food is alright but not my favourite Greek restaurant.
Astrid
My fiends and I always go to Stepho's when we're craving Greek food but this time around we visited their Robson location. The food tastes the same but it seems the servers don't have the same warmth as their older location. Our server, Robin (?) was quite snappy with my mom which was uncalled for when we were only getting her attention because it took a long while for her to come back and take our orders. It was a disheartening meal and she made us feel like we were bothering her. There's no lineup in this location but since coming here twice or thrice it always seems colder.

Not impressed, I forgot sunglasses about a month ago, called right away and they said they will hold them, told them I can't come down for a month or so. They said no problem we will hold for you. Went to pick up today and the day manager looked for me and she said they don't have them and sorry. I said they said they would hold, she said sorry, there not here. I left angry, they were expensive sunglasses and I had no way of getting there till ow because of a illness. I called tonight and talked to the night manager and he was rude, condescending and kept interupting me. He told me they give everything away after a month, I explained to him that's not what they told me when I called in, he said if they were important to you, you would of gotten them earlier and hung up on me. My family (large family) and friends all go to this restaurant and have for years. Will never go in again, after the way I was treated. So rude and too think this is how they talk to there long time customers. Food was ok, lots of Greek places out there and I will be giving them my money to them, that gives great customer service, goes for the rest of my family and friends too.

First time trying Greek food and I was blown away! The presentation is not the best but the taste is amazing !! I loved the lamb it was perfectly cooked!!! The bread they give you is amazing with their humus :)))

Went to dinner I can't believe people wait in line to eat here it was OK l had lamb chops they were fast fry 1/2 inch thick and I'm sure they were per cooked as they came out before our beers very chewy big food for a resonable price

Always a great place to eat and hang out with friends. Big portions and super cheap. Love the roast lamb, souvlaki, calamari even the lasagna is great

I used to come here quite often before, I can say Stepho's used to be my favorite Greek place. I used to drive down from Burnaby just to eat at Stepho's. Stepho's used to be quantity and quality. I only order one thing on the menu ever, calamari dinner. I find the food quality had declined over the years. I loved their calamari but the last time I went it tasted as if they had pre-made it and flash fried it, put in the freezer and when ordered, flashed fried and served to the customer. That was last time. I decided to give them another chance. Same problem, compared to all the other times I have been going something is funky with the calamari. Maybe it is just me, but every time I go to a Greek restaurant, that is all I order. It could also be now that I'm growing up, I'm starting to want quality as well.
Ruveens Reservations
Stepho’s is known for quick, cheap, tasty Greek food. They have two locations in downtown Vancouver. The original location is on Davie Street and they have been there for 20 years. Their newer location is on Robson Street. They do not take reservations, first come first serve only. Be prepared to wait if you are going on the weekend at dinner time. Try and catch an earlier dinner if you really want to eat here (before 6 pm).

• no reservations, first come, first serve basis.
• busiest on Fri & Sat evenings
• I've been here numerous times, I find the food quality had declined over the years. i loved their calamari but lately it had been a bit greasier and lesser portions too.
• Stepho's is known for huge portions, unfortunately not anymore, inflation I guess
• average service
• still a nice place to meet up with friends
Ben And Suanne
Ben and I went for a walk at the north side of the False Creek on a gloomy Saturday morning. It drizzled before we started the walk and we were glad that we did not give up and continued with our walk. We walked 20,000 steps that morning. After the walk, Ben rewarded me with a good lunch. He brought me to Stephos. Since it was still 5 minutes before the restaurant opened for lunch, there was only one group of about 10 in line.

For Stepho’s, you need to get there early, because they do not take reservations.
Given its affordability in price and the amount of food you get in return, the restaurant is always bombarding with customers wanting for more.

If you live in Vancouver, and love greek food, you've probably been to Stepho's. If you've never been and are from Vancouver, you probably live under a rock. For cheap greek food in downtown Vancouver, we highly recommend checking out Stepho's, its cheap, fresh and delicious. As you can see the portion is large as well, my chicken souvlaki cost me about $13, and I was completely satisfied. If you haven't been there for any reason, I highly recommend checking it out

☆!☆!!! COCKROACH ALERT☆!☆!!
Well I used to be an avid Stepho's fan and started going there in 1989. HOWEVER, I have stopped going to the one on Davie for a couple of reasons. Stephos was known for reasonably ok quality Greek food, giant portions at a very good price= value. Now quality has slipped a bit, the portions have become smaller, and the price has increased..VALUE DECREASED. What made Stephos great is loosing traction. Now boys and girls....this is not the main reason why I am not a Stephos on Davie fan anymore. The place is 100% CRAWLING WITH COCK ROACHES. I am in pest control and can tell roaches are shy and do not like to be in the open light where it is busy and noisy. Roaches are low on the food-chain and busy/noisy means danger to them. I saw roaches crawling up the walls during busy noisy prime time 630pm supper time. If I see 2 at the busy/noisy 630pm supper hour on the wall, that means there are many many many hundreds crawling around their kitchen when the lights go out. Stephos on Davie....clean up, get rid of your roaches, and bring the value back. Thumbs down!

Very dissapointed in the food great location good staff bu not sure why anyone would think this is quality Greek food, save your money?
Salad no dressing, cold f om the fridge pita bread and hot spice on salad not the freek menus I had in Greece.

Stepho’s has been around for a long time and they are known for serving inexpensive Greek food on Davie street. They now have a 2nd location on Robson too. This time we visited their Davie Street location during the BC day long weekend. It was not too busy as we went after the lunch rush was over just after 2:30pm. If you went in the evenings, don’t be surprised to see line ups. Prices are good and you get a reasonably big portion.

Like most of the reviews said, quantity over quality. The food is definitely mediocre but if you're looking for a cheaper greek restaurant, go here. I had the garlic prawns and they were fairly bland (but the shrimp had a nice snap). I don't recommend getting this dish, but I tasted the other dishes around my table and they were fine. Our waiter was very nice, but some of the waiters/waitresses seemed like they didn't know what they were doing (wandering around like a zombie & asking if they wanted our bones to be packed with our leftovers).
Samantha Bruin
I've been here quite a few times. Food is always consistent, delicious, and portions are HUGE. Souvlaki is spiced perfectly, and the Greek salad does not skimp on the feta or olives. Be prepared to wait in line.

Make sure you have at least 2 people if you want a table. Tonight I went as a single and was totally ignored by the brain dead host. She let at least 5 groups of 2 or more parties go ahead of me. She finally decided to tell me I could sit at the bar and eat. I told her she wasted 25 minutes of my time! What a moron. I decided to leave at that point rather than get into a confrontation with her or whomever else.
@annanguyen_
Why I love this place: big portions reasonable price, however the quality would not be deemed the best. The meat is usually dry and the rice a tad oily.
Would I come back: yes, just because I love getting take out and eating at the beach.
Would I recommend it to others: yes, just because it's such an institution in Vancouver, you have to try at least once.

A bad experience, very poor management skills of the business manager ...

We went for dinner on Friday night to Stepho's at Davie St.

We ordered alcohol, appetizers and entrees, and the bill was around $ 100 CAD.

At the end of the evening, we have many leftovers (1 full plate of mousaka, a lot of rice and salad), which I asked to bring home.

We paid the bill and were handed the bags with the food inside of closed containers, and we returned confident home.

When at home, I kept the container in the refrigerator and I will save it for lunch on Sunday, since the day Saturday we would be away from home.

Today, Sunday, I had a really bad surprise.

When removing the containers from the paper bags, I found only rice and salad,

mousaka was not inside ....

I called to the restaurant, I explained the situation and asked to speak to the manager. John (who identified himself as the manager), he tells me that he can not do anything, because today was Sunday, and that he was not on duty on Friday for dinner; and that was no one else to whom direct the claim. To which I answered, that if I had realized the day Friday night, which will be the difference in the solution of my complain?, besides the restaurant maybe was already closed.

Next John asked me if I had the detailed consumption, to speak to the manager on site on Friday, ... without ensuring he could do anything more than ask.

When looking at my wallet, I found the receipt of the transaction, as we paid by credit card. John told me that he can not accept it. I replied that I do not have the detail, but we took photos of the food, and also I identified the waiter who took our order that day. John told me that was not enough, and he could not do anything about the bad service of the restaurant ...

In summary, they made me pay an extra dish on the bill, which I did not consume or have the change to home. After to explain the situation to the manager, he was unwilling to help or solve the problem. Which in my point of view is surprising, as it was easy as to return the amount paid for the not delivered dish, or provide me with the plate missing.

This is my go to place for Greek food. No place can beat their prices and their great service. Not to mention the amount of food you get for a small price is awesome!

Fantastic food, fantastic prices, absolutely *terrible* service. Put our names on the waiting list and were told it would be an hour, but we waited an hour and 45 minutes before getting a table. Once we were in the food came quickly and was delicious, but we were subsequently ignored. One server came and cleared two of our plates away, but never returned for the other 3. We flagged our waiter down finally and asked for doggy bags/bills, but he never brought the bills. We then flagged down a separate waitress and asked her for our bills, and she seemed to forget about us. We watched her chatting with the hostess as we waited. She then walked by us and clearly realized she had forgotten us, and ran back to the computer, but disappeared and took another 10 minutes to return. Again, the food was positively fantastic and extremely affordable, but we will be doing take-out from now on. It was clear that the only reason we had to wait so long to get a table in the first place was because the servers don't cater to patrons who have finished their meals. 2 star experience.

I love coming here. You cannot beat the prices and the amount of food you get. Service is always quick, but somehow there is still always a line. Make sure you get there early!!
Joyce906
Bad Service. My two friends arrived to the restaurant early so they got seated first. Within 3 minutes, they asked if the third person is going to arrive soon. My friends told them she is finding parking. 5 minutes later, they asked again and rushed us to order. Once we were all ready to order, I asked to substitute my fries with calamari. The server chuckled, said no, and walked away. Didn't even give me the option to pay extra for the calamri. Would not come back again.

Can you pay more attention please?. Me and my friend went to Stepho's on Davie recently and we were greeted right away which was greet! It wasn't very busy since it was a Wednesday evening around 8:30. Our server took awhile to bring my drink order, a ginger ale ( she had forgotten) but other than that it was everything was pretty good. We ordered the calamari dinners for our meals and the portions were very big! We hardly ate the whole dish, we just managed to eat the salad, potatoes and the pita that came with the meal. We decided that itd be best to take the rest home, since we hardly touched our meals. The server asked if we were done and we said yes, I said could we get it packed up? She left with our dishes and came back with the debit machines. We waited awhile and so i asked where our leftovers were...she said she had thrown them out which was very disappointing.Tthe worst part of it though is that we didn't really get to eat much of it and she seemed pretty unapolgetic about it. She just said oh really i didnt realize, and left our table. I wish i hadn't tipped her because we didn't get much from our $16 meal.

Lots of food!. I had been wanting to go here for years. The opportunity came and I went for dinner. Shared two appies and two mains between 4 people. Wow, huge portions. I did not like the calamari, because it just didn't taste fresh. On the other hand, the mussels in the broth were very tasty. Our server was friendly and efficient. A couple of other waiters/bussers were too eager to clear our tables. We weren't finished with the mains yet and one waiter was about to take the plate away...
The interior lighting is a bit dim, giving the ambiance a romantic vibe, but the noise level and service interaction doesn't match the mood. Like others said, nothing special about the food. I would go back for the mussels though!
Kris S
Very bad customer service. They gave me really oily calamari without any crunch and what they did was just re-fry them which makes it unedible. Will not come back again.

They have zero quality in food - its like cafetaria food. People come here because its cheap, well they are getting cheap food.
Hamidreza_baktash
No respect , no customer satisfaction. I just left robson branch after 70 minutes waiting in an absolutely cold area in front of the restaurant. It is late January and cold tonight, they told us it takes 35 minutes to get a table and the heater outside has been broken for last two weeks so we waited and it was hard for the 4 years kid to wait in such a cold weather i got into the restaurant and a servant told us to get out impolitely she even didn't pay attention to the kid anyway after 70 minutes i asked them to let us know how long does it take more than that and they told us it isn't possible to estimate! So we left the restaurant cold , Hungary and exhausted
Rossmiller19977
Quantity over quality. You know how American and Korean cars seem to have a lot more bang for your buck in comparison to German cars? Truth is, you get all the electronic gadgets with the lack of quality and comfort in the 2 whereas you pay more for the German car but get less equipment but more quality. Stephos is the American and Korean car. Large portions but very subpar quality meats. You get what you pay for.
A Cook's Opinion
Favourite Greek. I love Stepho's. I've been coming back for 4 years now. The lamb dinner is always juicy and filled with rice, potatoes, salad etc. Slouvaki is very good and so is spanokopita (excuse spelling).

Great food and an unbelievable price. Just remember to come early lunch/dinner rushes are busy with lines out the door at times.

Horrible service. The food is good but the service is horrible the waiters need to get off their high horse and b more humble. ...
I went there for dinner and the waiter was very rude because we were waiting for a friend to arrive...he didn't give him a chance to order because he said the kitchen was closing
After we ate and shared our food with our friend we still left a tip for him...he had the bloody audacity to stop us and say this isn't enough and demanded more money from us! ! This restaurant has lost customers because of their wait staff I hope he gets fired

Not Worth The Wait. My boyfriend and I moved into the area a few months ago and kept walking by Stepho's and it's line up. With a wait even on a Monday night, we figured it must be amazing.
So one night, we buckled down and went. Waited for 30 minutes and we finally sat. The server came by and seemed rushed, so we quickly ordered a bottle of wine then asked for a few more minutes with the menu. 5 minutes later she starts to walk to us, then runs away. Another 10 minutes later she came with the wine and took our menus. We were very hungry so we ordered pita and tzatziki to start. 20 minutes later, we started to get impatient so I took a walk around. A group of 6 that were sat after us had their meals. The server came by after I sat down again and double checked our orders. 7 minutes after that we were served our appetizer of bread and dip. This leads me to believe that our orders were forgotten about. Then our meals came, I had ordered the mousaka, which was pretty good, but my boyfriend had lamb souvlaki and he did not enjoy it at all. The meat was over cooked and it was not enjoyable. The server did ask how our meals were, but by the time we looked up to answer she was gone. Getting the cheque was a challenge and a half. After waiting 15 minutes and asking twice we were about to just leave.
We will not be returning.

Big Fat Food!!. This place is one of my favorites in town. As a student this was one of the affordable places for a relatively good food coming in huge portions. What I like the most in the menu are the appetizers, Tarama is delicious and so is Saganaki.
The main food is usually big and greasy..
Although I have not been there for 6 month, and I heard that it's a bit overpriced now
FaceFirst
Roast Lamb was so good and plenty of food.
Asphyx24
Too Expensive now. I use to go there religiously once a week for lunch so did my other collegues in the Royal Columbia Hospital. But they made it too expensive for regular lunch now. I use to get the Lamb Roast for $9.95 which they have jacked it up to $14.95. Now i goto other new westminster Greek restaurants equally good and who still charge $9 to $10 for Lamb Roast or steak. Lunch here aint worth $15.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Saw the lineups here our last trip to vancouver and decided to try it this time. Prices were very reasonable, portions for large for price and it was amazing Greek food. Service was great too!!
Hilda0971
Roast Lamb. So tender and tasty...luv it!

Waiting For Your Food Is Worth It .... it is not premium Quality Food!. This place is a busy place in the evening with long lineup. Waiting for a table, waiting to be serve, waiting for you food is all worth it. It is good food that is fairly priced. It is not the best food a person can, but what do you expected for the price of the food in this type of restaurant. It is good quality food for a middle quality type restaurant. It is not a high end, high service place. It is the wrong type of restaurant if you are look for a place where all the millionaires go to. This is not a fast food place.

I love the Greek chicken and lamb souvlaki. The Greek Salads are very taste. My friends and I come to the place when we are in the downtown area a lot of time. The westend restaurants can be pricy, but the prices in the menu are still fair. In general, the prices of food in the Vancouver downtown are not cheap. Do not expect A1 services and A1 quality.
Superkel604
Over hyped....poor quality. The food here used to be ok, but food quality is going down down down!!
They charged me 50 cents for lemon, and $1.75 to sub caesar instead of greek salad. Service wasn't great. I'll never ever ever return here again. Instead try Panos Greek on Marine drive or Ramies in burnaby.
Jason Heath
Just increased prices by 40%. This has been a regular spot for many years because it has great size portions at a great price and the food was pretty good. The service has always been a hit & miss. The problem is they just increased pricing by 40% across the board. Thats a bit too much of an increase to swallow. The popular roast lamb dinner went from $9.95 to $14.00....wow a bit of a hike!!!!

I am pretty sure the line-up outside the door will be a thing of the past after the word gets out about this

I could eat at Stepho's everyday. The best value of money. Food is so tasty and cheap!

Cheap, Good, Great Portions, GREAT VALUE (See the single $ in the details?). I'm taking my garlic-tinted glasses off for a bit to write an honest review here. I love Stephos (and I loooove garlic), and Stephos is a must-eat every time I'm in Vancouver. I've never had a bad experience (I have had good-but-not-great experiences). That said, I've had many friends leave slightly underwhelmed. I'm pretty sure I've just been lucky to never get a "miss" day, but Stephos seems like it's now a somewhat "hit or miss" place. In my mind, it's definitely more often a "hit," but the hordes of reviews below me can't all be lying.

That said, the Tiroboukes are to die for (as is the garlic dip), and staples like Souvlaki platters are always great. I've had somewhat bland potatoes once, but I've gone many many times (and usually their mustard-roasted potatoes are great!). The last thing to be said is just how much value you get here! Stephos has prices like an Opa!, with food as good as a quality greek restaurant, and amazing portions. I think that's really what's captured Vancouver's heart as a downtown staple.

With all the "miss" reviews below, I can't pretend like Stephos is the best Greek in Vancouver (though I'd say it's certainly in the running), but what I can say is that Stephos has the BEST VALUE IN VANCOUVER, hands down.

p.s. I usually go with a chicken souvlaki platter.

Longterm customer receives poor service. I have been a patron of Stepho’s for well over 10 years, often enduring the notoriously long queues for what has always been quality Greek fare at reasonable prices. When I started my first job out of university several years ago, I ordered large group (30+) lunches a number of times, and was always pleased with the service I received, both over the phone and upon pick-up. It has likely been about a year or two since my last visit to Stepho’s, but I have always held the restaurant in high regard. Last week, I ordered a group (14) lunch for pick-up today. I was told that it would be ready by 11:30am, but to my surprise, we waited until 11:50am before the hostess/server handed us several foil containers and two paper bags. As our luncheon was to begin at 12:00pm, we hurried back to the office without checking the containers and bags, but we were assured that it was our complete order. When we arrived back at the office and began to unpack the lunch, it was evident that we were missing the meat and potatoes... literally. We had salad, rice, and pita, but no chicken, lamb, beef or potatoes. When I called, the host simply said, “Oh, yes, you forgot four trays.” I said, “No, we didn’t FORGET anything. We weren’t given them.” He further explained that he saw the trays in the kitchen when he arrived at the restaurant (he wasn’t there when we were picking up) and the hostess simply said that she didn’t know what they were. I explained our situation (that we were beginning our luncheon and were unable to send someone back to pick up the remainder of our order), and while he did apologize, he said that there was nothing he could do and that he was unable to have someone send it to our office (we are downtown, within 10 minutes away). At some point, I could hear the hostess in the background, apologizing, to which he replied, “Don’t worry, Christine. It’s not your fault.” I nearly blurted out, “It IS her fault!!” Finally, I asked him to send it in a cab, and he agreed, saying that it would likely only take 10 minutes. I live in the west end, and I know that cabs are VERY easy to flag down in that area (the Sandman hotel is nearby), so it was much to my surprise that I received another call 15 minutes later from the host, confirming the location for drop-off; the food had not left yet. We didn’t receive the food for another 20 minutes, by which time there were only 10 minutes left of the luncheon. As you have probably guessed, they also did not offer to pay for the cab. I won’t go as far as saying that I will never go back to Stepho’s... but I do feel very differently about their quality of service. I will certainly hesitate to ever make large orders again, and rest assured I will be checking every take-out bag I get there, even if it’s just an order for myself. Most of all, I was unimpressed with the lack of effort to remedy the situation. We had even tipped... it would likely have covered the cab fare. It’s called customer retention!

If quantity over quality is what you are looking for, Stepho's is it. Food is mediocre, seating is cramped, service is poor. You get what you pay for.

-----08 Aug, 2014-----

Good cheap eats here. Large portions but don't expect a fancy dinner.

Best lamb I've had in years. Excellent meal! Will be back again.
Alexandre.jean
Is there any "cook" working in this place?. I know, I know some are going to say that I exaggerate but this new Stepho location is awesome excepted for... the food! The service is quite good and your entree is served in a blink of an eye, and that's why I gave 2 stars. Period. The food is "n'importe quoi!", just worth the price. Lamb or beef have no taste, riz pilaf not cooked enough (rice and veggies hard under the teeth), way too much salt and pepper, pita bread deeply impregnated with oil... I noticed that the Davies' location was going down, so I gave a try on the Robson's one; my visit there was my third attempt to this location and since it has just been worse each time, I am saying "Adieu"to Stepho...

You want okay generic Greek go here. You want great Greek go to Takis just a couple shops down. No line up no pretention and a wayyy better, fun atmosphere.

Great Meal. We really enjoyed our meal and service. The prices are extremely good. It was busy, but we well looked after. Will eat here again.

Worst customer service ever!!...I understand that the restaurant is really busy but the staff still should pay attention to customers service standards...would not recommend this restaurant during peak times...
Siayka5
Good place for people with low income. Not bad idea in general. Works for many people as a line up shows. Do not work for me though. Overall quality is not good. Too greasy.

NOT GOING BACK!!!!. Hi there,

I'm just going to get straight to the point.

1) Never have I ever waited in a line-up for a restaurant that wasn't even busy! 30min.

2) Ordered a Coke Cola and it was completely flat with one tiny icecube floating around.

3) Waited for another 30min for my food.

4) Chicken was over salted and rubbery.

5) Rice and veggies way over seasoned. I could easily scrape off the seasoning with my knife. Boy, was it a thick layer!

6) Service was okay. No one smiles and everyone is rude. The staff looks exhausted!!!

Unfortunately, it wasn't the best experience and sadly enough I've had better Greek food at Opa!
Jon
Bad services and there no way to sugarcoat this one. Well you want to pay $15 and under for a reasonably good Greek food with large portion, and yes you will find it at Stepho's. However, you better be ready to put up with long line up, horrible services, and if by chance they overcooked your meat/seafood etc and just be grateful to eat your meal, pay and leave.
I do not visit Stepho's for over 12 years, and it was my favourite Greek restaurant in Vancouver. If you line up for a business, you are condoning to its practice. If you don't like to support or to promote bad services and at times bad foods, then you wonder what are all those people lining up outside Stepho's are doing? The world is full of strange places and people at times.
Jesse
Worst service, and it wasn't even that busy.. Waited 10 mins to be seated could of seated myself. Server never came after 20mins we just left. Never going there again.

We used to eat here frequently when this place was White Tower. Then it closed for a year for renovations and recently reopened as Stepho's. We've only been able to eat here once since it reopened because we can never get a table. The lineup is always out the door and when we have tried to get a table it's frustrating to get the host's attention. What's strange is the interior improvements were minor and I don't think the menu changed at all. The food is decent and the price is right, but nothing I would wait in line for. We really liked White Tower because we felt like we were eating at a Mom and Pop restaurant, but our experience at Stepho's has felt like eating at a fast food chain.
Donwest1
Stephos Robson. Absolutely the worst Greek food I have ever had in 40 years. What the hell are people waiting in line for? The saganaki hung in long strings off our forks. Chef said they were using Mozzarella to cut corners, I could not pry a lot of the chicken off the kebab, and when I did, it had a chemical taste. I spat several tries into my napkin before giving up. No apologies, only excuses. I just don't get it. Why are they even open, let alone busy?

Great atmosphere and friendly servers, portions were huuuuuge! Tried the calamari dinner, unfortunately my calamari was a bit rubbery/ chewy.. But other than that I'd definitely come back and try another dish :)
