Review Davie Dosa Company - Vancouver

I actually really enjoyed the masala rava dosa here and the spice level was amazing too. Really good chutneys but not a fan of the sambar. I have never seen so many interesting dosa options in my life such as butter chicken dosa. Friends said vada was average. The place could do with improving the interior vibes slightly as I think the food is good.

The food at this restaurant is absolutely incredible. The dosas were perfectly thin and crispy while being accompanied by coconut and tomato chutneys that provided contrasting sweet and tangy flavors. The sambar was immensely satisfying and filling, adding an additional layer of savory flavor to the dosa (and it is even better when had with the traditional idli). I chose to get an egg dosa with prawns and the spicy gravy of the prawns coupled with the added protein of the egg made for a truly unbeatable experience. And if you tend to eat a lot of food, look no further as the generous portions will leave absolutely stuffed. Beyond the food, the owner was incredibly kind and personable. He clearly took delight in talking to customers and swapping stories with them which made the restaurant truly feel like home. These are South Indian staples made authentically by a true Tamilian, and that makes all the difference. If you are a fan of Indian cuisine, this is a must try restaurant. By far the best thing I ate during my week stay in Vancouver.

During our trip, we were craving for Indian brunch and this restaurant was close to our Hotel so it was definitely yes! We went when they just started their day so the restaurant was clean but food was not up to the mark + it was expensive considering their ambiance and food (might be due to location) We ordered: • Idli and Vada combo • Eggplant Dosa (this is the first and last time I tried as it felt like eating rice roti with aloo-baigan) • House Spiced Masala Dosa (better compared to Eggplant but not Wow) Drinks: • Filter Coffee • Buttermilk Food: 6/10 Ambiance: 5/10 Staff: 10/10

Must visit south Indian restaurant in Vancouver. Dosas are very delicious and also the Filter coffee is amazing. Owner is very welcoming and the staff is courteous.

Customer service was really great. We ordered one appetizers and three dosas which were delicious. Garlic cheese masala dosa I would highly recommend. Mysore masala dosa was okay. Panner 65 was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

This place has amazing dosa with really good tasting chutneys and sambhar. Like delicious good - with big grains of actual coconut and lentils. Also had chai - which was pretty good as well. Strongly recommend the place.

Delicious, fresh and completely authentic dosa! Loved the crisp, slight tang and yummy filings. We tried the butter chicken and masala - both were winners. The chicken briyani was also really good - flavours permeated into the rice, which was fluffy and fragrant. So good.

Tried the dosas (chicken tikka, masala and mushroom masala) and briyani. All the dishes are outstanding. The dosa shell is crispy and light, and sufficiently tangy. The masala filling was soft, well-spiced, and flavorful. The mushroom masala had an additional dimension of mildly cheesy mushrooms. The chicken tikka was likewise tender and had fragrant, deep flavors. The chicken briyani flavors are well steeped and suffuse the whole dish.

We loved this place - service is excellent: friendly, helpful (great menu recommendations) and attentive. But the food was the real star: wonderfully spiced, so full of mouth watering flavor - we will be back!

I’m glad to have discovered dosa, a great gluten-free choice, something I would now prefer over naan bread or basmati rice when I go for Indian curry dishes. The curry here is incredibly flavourful, definitely one of the best in downtown for me.
Now Davie Dosa Company is offering 15% off to Vancouver Gourmet Club (VGC) members.

I visited this restaurant for the first time. The dosa was delicious. Also, tried idli and medu vada and it was equally tasty. Though it was a bit crowded today, they tried their best to serve food on time. Its a pretty good restaurant to try authentic south indian food in downtown.

We visited Davie Dosa the first week it was opened, had a great time (better than one would expect for a just-opened restaurant). The Chef couldn't do enough for us, the food was fresh, flavourful, and tuned to our tastes.

Fast forward a year, perhaps (I forget when it was first opened). Saturday night, 8pm. Only about half of the ~twenty tables were filled. ONE server, he's only been on the job for a couple of days, one bartender who was helping out as well. Based on the initial lags in service, we figured it would take a little extra time to get served. "Little" hardly describes it. It was fully an _hour and a half_ before we got our mains. Arrived at 8:10, drinks (I picked them up at the bar) at 8:20, appies at 8:45(?) - then nothing for close to an hour. They never asked whether the appetizers were OK, never offered a beer refill.

The kitchen is partially open so while we can't see the equipment in use, we can see that staff. The original chef we interacted with in the early days was not around; whether he's moved on or what, I don't know. There's two guys and two women in the small kitchen. One guy is definitely frying the dosas, the other guy was dishwashing and maybe doing some kind of prep. The ladies both have long hair, nobody has a hairnet or anything to keep hair out of our food (we didn't have any in ours, but, working in food service, it's not hard to imagine).

Slowly and painfully we watched food leave the kitchen every 10 minutes or so. "Maybe that's ours!". No. Repeat. By the time we are served, there are only six active tables, most "deuces" (two diners). The "chef" is talking on his cell phone WHILE cooking. Is this your job, or just a hobby?

I suppose, after reading the ranty part of my review you'd like to heard about the food. Or, maybe not? It wasn't bad. The somosas were warm and reasonably crisp (but did not appear fresh-fried). The idly was steaming hot - a microwave was in constant action while I watched the kitchen work; these were too hot to have been fresh, they had to have been reheated. The sauces were all intriguing, and tasty.

For our mains, we ordered one curry, one biryani and a paneer dosa. The biryana rice was rather oily but nicely prepared, ample, but kind of lacking in chicken. The dosa was as I expected it (lots of dosa, moderate filling), but the diner found it on the bland side. I'd gotten the curry (lamb) and had ordered it "Tamil-Nadu medium" which would be quite spicy by Canadian standards - which is why I asked for it that way. It came mildly spiced, and on the salty side. They'd made no accomodation for my preference whatsover. It was sufficiently warm, not the piping hot I'd have expected (or would deliver to my own diners).

So, what went wrong? Server new? Yes, why put him on a Saturday night? [He intimated that he was going to quit]. Short on cookstaff? Maybe: but there were four people in the kitchen. Apathy? Ineptitude? Poor planning? All of them? Suppose it doesn't matter. We won't return until I hear things have improved.

Conclusion: "B grade" food if you're potentially willing to wait hours for it. We were polite with the server, and tipped properly, recogizing that he wasn't the problem. [Despite the rediculous delays, nothing was offered, as far as comp'ing an appetizer or perhaps a drink]. Prices are reasonable.

If you're keen on a dosa and don't mind the travel, "House of Dosas" on Kingsway is cheap, authentic, and has been around forever (parking in that area can be a challenge however). I don't have any affiliation with either place.

I think this restaurant has "issues" at the moment (June 2018) and based on this recent experience, I'm a bit embarassed to have been a poster boy for it since its opening.
