Review Earls Test Kitchen - Vancouver

Anjith Jayaraj
Great ambience, friendly staff and nice service. The food tasted great. Great prices on appies and drinks during happy hour. Not expensive for the ambience and taste. Limited parking space. Washrooms were clean and is located upstairs.

Unfortunately didn’t meet my expectations - the food was a little cold and the service was slow despite it being 3pm-ish. The chicken sandwich was dry and so were the tacos. Waitress accidentally dropped a knife on my lap but luckily no harm was done. Disappointed overall.

Came for late night happy hour, and food was astonishingly slow to come out despite it not being busy. Took over 45 mins for a salad, burger, and some tacos. Food was mediocre. A good thing was the large portion for the Santa Fe blackened chicken salad.

I visited the restaurant on November 30th 2020. Excellent place, food and services. Nothing negative to comment on. Absolutely perfect.

Excellent food and drinks. Ambiance can get very loud, and the prices are on the higher end but worth it. (Sweet deals if you go for happy hour, highly recommend that) Waiter took extra care to be sure of allergies and the manager even came by to triple check everything for my girlfriends gluten allergy which was very much appreciated. Any time we’re back in Vancouver, Earls is definitely a stop! Excited to try the one back in Toronto!

Earls is always a great choice to either dine-in or take-out! Kudos for implementing the QR codes to see the menu and pay. I highly recommend the Steak & sushi, the Earl’s wings and the Cajun Blackened Chicken 😋 If the weather is nice, eat in the patio 👍🏼

Dining at the Earl’s test kitchen was an excellent experience. We ordered the Santa Fe salad (a classic!) and the prawn sushi tacos, and the truffle fries to share. Everything was delicious. We frequently visit the King St. location in Toronto and so we were happy to have such a great experience dining at the test kitchen while we were visiting Vancouver.

Fortunately, so far I’ve experienced the same food and cuisine in different branches of Earls. Service quality is the same as any other branch and servers are friendly enough. The location is really good in the heart of down town near Cineplex and Burrard street. The waiters and waitresses are welcome to you and you have no issues regarding ordering time and food preparation time. 🥗 The salads are usually good and tasty in earls and you have the option for adding some protein like Salmon or shrimp on top. Mother earth is always a good option. 🥙 Vegan Hunan Kung Pao is one of my favorites as the ingredients mix well and create a nice taste in your mouth. Part of it is peanuts that makes it different. 🍱 Lettuce wrap is much like Wok-Fried Tofu Lettuce Wrap apart from some Tofu inside (which could be added to Lettuce wrap). Both are good to try. In general, Earls always provides a decent food & service. You can try them anytime & enjoy!

I ordered a steak and soup. Both came at the same time. Ordered a steak medium well. When it came to the table it was not hot, so it had been sitting for a while. It was blood red in the center third. Far from medium much less than medium well. The place was so noisy from the TV's being turned up so loud we couldn't talk across the table. I wouldn't recommend it.

Really great atmosphere n vibe about it! Food was on point n the service was brilliant! Wish I could remember our waitress name she was fantastic! Defo recommend this place

Excellent place, food & service, totally recommend you try it if you’re in the Vancouver area, enjoyed it very much.

My favourite Earl's in Canada... Best variety of food but still the staple menu items you go to Earl's to eat... The entire family always finds something fantastic to eat off the menu Earls Test Kitchen downtown. Great service always as well.

Great food and attentive service. I was there with my wife yesterday for dinner. I would recommend this location dinner even even for a larger group.

Earl's would never disappoint you! It's a kind of place you'd want to go as a safety net and there is nothing wrong with that. There is usually something for everyone here.

Since this was the test kitchen, I tried the beyond burger here which was part of the test menu, and it was good, maybe a little dry. The sushi was good.

The place has a pleasant casual vibe. Good for families as well as friends.

I should feel bad about going to happy hour enough to get 3 of these up in a week but….I’m not because when life gives you lemons…put them in a moscow mule right? We decided to go to Earls Test Kitchen because it was one of the only restaurants willing to host a large party on a Saturday night. Bonus points to Earls Test Kitchen for that!

Visited in June - arriving with a reservation, we had a short but reasonable wait to be seated. The atmosphere was very vibrant (some may find it noisy) but it didn't impair our conversation. Our waitress was friendly and chatty and got us the happy hour drinks menu which hadn't been on our table and we'd have ordered full priced drinks without knowing. We have to recommend the crispy ribs they were excellent. The Jamaican and Cajun chicken dishes were both flavoursome with the chicken being very tender. Couldn't fault the night, service or food

I’ve always found Earls to be in “that league” of restaurants that’s a step above White Spot but not quite fine dining, much akin to Milestones, Moxie’s, etc. In any case, a group of friends and I were going out to celebrate a buddy’s birthday and given how central the location was, we decided to give this one a go!

The atmosphere was nice and the service was decent considering that I was part of a large group. I had the quinoa and avocado power bowl because I was looking for something a little healthier. It was good and I would recommend it. However, just for those considering this dish - I was expecting a bowl with more quinoa, but it was more of a salad plate with quinoa garnishing. Still good.

I enjoyed the food and atmosphere in this location, the staff were extremely polite and friendly and the service was very good and quick, I enjoyed it
Constant Cravings
My BFF was visiting from Toronto last month and we decided to go to Earl’s Test Kitchen to grab some food before watching a movie. It’s located down the block from the Scotiabank theatre on Hornby and Smithe. It’s so convenient there’s no way you can be late for the movie! We watched Guardians of the Galaxy which was pretty funny. This was my first time at this Earl’s. In fact, I think this is the first time I’ve been to any Earl’s in ages!

Earls Test Kitchen is the place to go for happy hour before watching a movie at night. What is different about this Earls is that it is a culinary playground to craft different dishes and drinks that may influence the other Earl’s menu in North America. The place was packed and we wanted to come here to catch happy hour. All items are smaller versions of what on the regular menu, but cheaper.

Met up with R for another Happy Hour adventure! This time we decided to go to Earls Test Kitchen because it was close to my work. Their happy hour is from 3 pm – 6 pm. We got there around 5:45 pm and it was really busy!. What we drank: Moscow Mule and Mojito ($7 each). My Mule was pretty light on the alcohol, but the Mojito definitely packed a punch! Pretty standard drinks.

Pictured: Lemon Meringue in drink form? Yes please, Earls! Even better on Fridays when they’re $2 off all signature cocktails. One of each please! I don’t normally go to Earls as I rather try different types of restaurants every time I go out, however, I do find that the few times I’ve been here for work lunches, the Earls Test Kitchen does produce good quality food and the fun part here is that being a test kitchen, you can try some new menu items that they are testing out. I think I would rather go here though for happy hour - the drinks are decently priced and the cocktails are pretty dang delicious!

I went there with my friend. It was 9 and we were hungry. Waited for 5 min and we got seated. Service was good. The atmosphere there was excited. We ordered a noodles and a rice bowl. Tasted good.

The three of us sat in the C-shaped booth on Chinese New Day for a late lunch. The restaurant was spacious with modern decor. I was impressed that all the cutlery were engraved with the Earl’s ‘e’ on the handle. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar $15. You had an option of choosing cajun or hot garlic chicken. I chose cajun. I was quite surprised with the size. It came on a large plate, though mostly all romaine. The leafy greens were fresh and crisp. There were a couple of croutons. I like the shredded cheese that blanketed the leafs like snow. The dressing was really good. The chicken were a bit burnt, but flavourful. The bread was crumbly and dry. I’m not a fan of bread, though I do love most complimentary buns that come out at finer restaurants at the beginning. I was also already full when I had finished the salad and chicken, so I only had a bite from the bread.

Earls is like home.. I haven't worked here for over two years almost? I don't know, felt ages ago. There's always good and bad and the good well I literally ate the entire menu every day for almost a year of my life to the point where I memorize the dish in my sleep and bad well that's pretty bad. There's still some items that I crave ever so often and that is PUMPKIN PIE!! I can proudly say I've eaten an entire pie to myself (not in one sitting I am not that fat, took a week) but I did!Wednesday is Wine night at Earls. Half price bottles and glasses of their house wine, ps you can't even buy it at the liquor store well, at least that's what I am informed of so Wednesday night I drop by for a bottle and my favourite dessert. Geez that was a long sentence, I am not even going bother fixing that. My favourite is the Yaletown and Test Kitchen. Yaletown for the decor and atmosphere, upstair lounge is pretty unique. Test Kitchen for their new items you can't find anywhere else! I came here last night and there was pho! You get to be the judge of upcoming menus.. way to feel important again right?

I am officially in love this place! I love the ambiance and space they have. The service is great, the menu is pretty vast, and the food is quite well prepared as well. Plus the happy hour specials are amazing between 3-6 and 9-close. Highly recommended!
Drunken Noms
On Monday, Princess Rainbow Sparkles, The Bear, and I decided to go watch The Martian. I’d read the book during the summer, and really enjoyed that fact that an astronaut abandoned on Mars could survive for an extended period of time by “sciencing the shit” out of things. Granted, the astronaut in the movie has degrees in botany and mechanical engineering, but I like to believe that I could biochem my way off Mars. Because gene cloning and DNA sequencing would obviously come in handy when in space, right? (Answer: No).

My experience at the earls test kitchen was overall pretty good. We went as a group of four and all ordered their half off wine special on Wednesday. I ordered the fish tacos which were pretty average, but probably wouldn't order them again. A little too much fish and not enough of everything else- the ratio was a bit off. My three friends ordered meals off their test kitchen menu, and enjoyed them all. The chicken and waffles was a big hit amongst all of us! The service was pretty good as well, no complaints.
The Hungry Couple
We decided to try earls for brunch. We know what you're thinking... Earls, really? But before you jump to conclusions take a look at those pictures! The fried egg sandwich and the sweet Virginia Benny. What a pleasant (and delicious) surprise! Their menu is small yet we found each dish was very well executed. The fried egg sandwich had an amazing caramelized lemon aioli that gave it a bit of zing, and the Benny was so flavorful and came with perfectly crispy potatoes! We will be visiting earls again for a simple, delicious, and reasonably priced brunch!

Getting expensive. We dined at Earl's test kitchen for dinner on Saturday night. Have been to this location for lunch and all good.
Food was good but drink prices are too much. $10.00 plus or $16.00 for a glass of wine from a box. Really. My wife's pinot grigio was frothy and effervescent, freshly decanted from a card board box. For $16.00 - really. Food was fine, but will look for someplace else for casual dining downtown.

Korean Bibimpa. It was not so good. I won't order it again...

Amazing restaurant. I brought my girlfriend here for our anniversary and everything about this place was amazing. The service was fantastic and the food was definitely up to par. This place exceeded our expectations. We loved it so much we came back the next day for lunch. This will definitely be a regular trip for us and I would highly recommend it.

Average.. An average place where you can get an average meal. Nothing great and nothing memorable to warrant a return.
Looking For A Michelin In Vancouver
Average food. Poor service. Our table had steak, lobster (they had a lobster special), Cesar Salad and yam fries. The steak was average. We asked for medium rare was medium. The lobster was slightly overcooked, not sure if farmed lobster. Cesar Salad was good. Service was poor. Our server appear to follow a script, however sounded fake. Not sure if inexperienced or just incompetent. After our food was served she disappeared. We were unable to order more drinks. Average food, typical for a chain, however service needs improvement.

I'd rather scoop my eye out with a potato peeler. Let’s face it; the ambiance is like being in a barn with similar acoustics. The food is mediocre and overpriced.......but reliable.
The only reason I’ve returned is that the service has been reasonable.
Well no longer! I sat around waiting for service forever. When my pension cheque was delivered to the table I knew it was time to leave.

I asked to speak to the manager as I was leaving to provide appropriate feedback and the staff called a very worried looking young lady who shrugged her shoulders and said she would pass on my comments to the staff, and gave me her card. Apparently she is Chris Kennedy, Floor Manager-Lounge. Now I know I was waiting for a while, but I am sure my eyes hadn’t deteriorated to such an extent that I mistook a dude for a girl.

There are a lot of alternatives to Earls in the close vicinity. My suggestion would be to use them. Why risk ruining the evening?!

The Spin Dip was quite good because it was served very hot. However the bread wasn't as good as what I'm used to. The service was good but the tv volume was too high.

Four meals order - two were great and two very average. My buddy and my burgers were excellent (Bronxs and Earls) while our spouses' Halibut Chips and Fish Tacos were average. The fish was over cooked on both items and rated average. Good atmosphere and good service

I was looking forward to try this out after the renos. Went at lunch, asked for 'the quiet side' and couldn't hear a damn thing the server was saying. Very poor acoustic design. Have no idea about the food as the clamour chased us out. Horrible....

Horrible. What a joke. The service was HORRIBLE.
The nice hostess sat us down, and said a waitress would be with us shortly.
The hostess came and threw the menus down on the table for us, (We sat at the bar so we had a fairly small table). She didn't ask us what we wanted to drink, until I indicated to her that my girlfriend and I would like a glass of water.
She comes back with the cup dripping wet and even managed to spill some on me as well.

I ordered the Clam Chowder soup while my girlfriend ordered some pizza thing, and to my surprise, she gave us this disgusted look on her face.

Finally, about 45 minutes later, our food came. It was mediocre at best. I had a small problem with my dinner bread that was given to me, and I told the waitress that is serving us, she goes to the kitchen, gets me a smaller piece of bread and comes back out and just drops it in my soup as if it's a joke.

Never, and I mean NEVER have I had such horrible service.
Spoonmaster
NEVER AGAIN. Nice decor and location. Food is horrible....the curry chicken was 80% rice and bread, 10% curry and 10% chicken and they had the guts to charge $18 for it. Steak was ok but overpriced. Burger was average and pasta unremarkable. Dessert was not very good either. In one word: NOT WORTH THE PRICE.
Tlell
Nice location and decor. Extremely over priced. I ordered yam fries as an appetizer. It was $8 so i was expecing it to be a decent portion that we could share. However is wa the tiniest bowl. Vegetable quesadilla was good.

Not what it once was. Earls has badly given in! Used to be a fantastic restaurant. They are now a big chain I guess and they are just average. The food is still good, but there are few choices on the menu. Excellent atmosphere. Attentive staff, but no short skirts. I couldn't beleive that they had a couple of waitresses wearing pants. Can you say 'oh no they have wussed out'?

Great Casual Lunch. Went for lunch on a Saturday with two other couples and we had a very relaxing lunch.
The menu is very varied with a good assortment of traditional dishes and international ethnic styled fare.
The soup of the day was mulligatawny which proved to be a firm favourite with our group. Our waitress was a delightful young lady called Heather. She was friendly and attentive and helped make our lunch a fun experience.

The Bachelor's review. Earls Restaurant Located 905 Hornby St, Vancouver. Situated in the center of Vancouver Downtown, this location makes it an ideal spot for group gatherings, Birthdays, watching sporting events (make sure you get there early for the Canucks games, it gets packed quick!) or a place to start off your evening before a night of entertainment. It has a great lounge section with TVs virtually on every wall and an oversize projector right above the main wall behind the bar. Surround sound speakers pumping the latest tunes or broadcasting the commentator of a live sporting event, creating a great atmosphere for all to enjoy. A dining area that provides comfort and a private section upstairs that can hold a more intimate gathering for your party. The servers are friendly and most of all the food is very reasonably priced.
For my review debut, I thought I would go somewhere close to home and somewhere I'm familiar with. I've been going to Earls for at least 20 years, all the way back to Earls on Kingsway (4361 Kingsway Ave). One thing I am certain is the consistency in the quality of their food, no matter which Earls you go to, you know exactly what you'll be getting.

Decided to go for a quick lunch, one of my personal favorite has to be their Clam Chowder ($6.85) Rich Cream, Baby Clams, Bacon & Vegetables served with a freshly baked Focaccia Bread, in my opinion a must try!
Thought I try something different and came across their Prawn Dynamite Roll ($10.00) Panko Breaded Prawns, Mango, Avacado, Cucumber & Togarashi Mayo, drizzled with Maple Soy reduction & Srirachi Mayonaisse that gave it that little kick which was just perfect, it was surprisingly delightful.

They are also known for their Calamari ($10.60), half price Wings Wednesdays, Spiced Chicken Ceasar and many more...

Their selection ranges from Salads like the Rocket Salad ($7.75), Pizza, Pasta, Asian inspired dishes, Burgers/ Sandwiches and Steaks. Give the Porcini Crusted 7oz Filet With Truffle Chive Butter (27.00) a try, it is mouth watering just thinking about it.

Their cocktail & Martini list is very creative as well, my server Jenn's favorites were the Lemon Meringue ($6.60) and the Lychee Gershia ($8.00). Their wine list is also very reasonably price ranging from $27- $71.

It's always nice to be able to go somewhere where you know you can count on good quality and good service, and Earls on Hornby for sure has my vote!
Famished Foodies
We like the layout, with a hipper lounge area and a quieter area in the back. The service was impeccable, and the food excellent, as usual. We especially enjoyed our Cajun chicken and soy-ginger salmon. The one wheelchair-accessible restroom on the first floor is often busy; you're better off going to the bigger, nicer ones upstairs.

A good experience you can expect from Earls. Had Grilled Chicken and Baked Brie on Ciabatta with side mixed green salad without dressing. it's not a huge amount which is great and service and food quality is definitely of what you can expect for an Earls.

Sub-par food and chicks. We went down, admittedly for lunch, today needing to eat a good meal after a night of debauchery. We were looking for good food, served quickly, some good service and the usual Earl's decor which includes beautiful leggy blondes. Instead, it looked pretty disappointing. We should have walked right out and gone to Burrard, but instead being tired hung in there. The food was OK (we had burgers, coke, chicken, etc.) , the decor was below average for the chain and the waitresses, well I guess they ran out of the hot ones. With all due respect, thats like false advertising. We were expecting standard Earl's fare. We didn't get it here.

Hungry after Pride Parade and Chicas.... I was slightly tipsy and hungry when my sweetie and I went to Earl's - only because of its proximity to Chicas. We wanted a light meal and we got just that. We ordered the same thing! Crazy! We each had the chicken tacos with a side of mixed greens (yummy candied nuts and feta, a bit overdressed) - the tacos were fine and they hit the spot but were not special or memorable. Our server gushed about the hot sauce, but my sweetie was not impressed.

The interior of the place is very spacious and they had TONS of TV's everywhere. The style of the restaurant is similar to Milestone or Joey's.
The steak was a huge disappointment. In no way did it have any redeeming qualities. In fact, after eating it, I felt that I really needed a steak redemption. The steak was totally not a ‘mmm’ steak. It was a ‘meh’ steak. The steak even tasted worse than the minimally-aged Canadian-prime beef from Costco that I regularly put on my backyard grill.

After seeing a film at the Scotiabank Cinemas we exited the complex to find that rain was pelting down with gusts of wind blasting our umbrellas inside out. We speed-walked a few yards to the corner of Smythe and Hornby to have supper at the Earls restaurant round the corner. We asked to be seated where it was reasonably quiet and the lighting was good. The area in the dining room where we sat was excellent. We were not bothered by any booming loud music as so often happens these days. The light was bright enough so that the menus could be read without the aid of my mini-flashlight, and the food photographs worked well too. I liked the sound of the dynamite prawn and mango roll - a panko-breaded prawn and mango with avocado, cucumber, unagi maole and sriracha mayonnaise. It was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. Both of us decided on steak from the Test Kitchen menu, that was described as Alberta-raised Spring Creek Ranch Top Sirloin served with a signature rub, garlic mashed potatoes and seasonable vegetables. I asked for fries rather than the mashed potatoes, and ordered the steak medium-rare with bourbon mushroom sauce (with crimini and button mushrooms) on the side. My steak was perfectly cooked, thick, tender and juicy, and the fries irresistible. The sauce was delicious and was not on the side but coating the steak. As it turned out that was better for me as I found the taste of the spicy rub too peppery, even through the masking of the sauce. My friend ordered steak cooked medium, with no sauce, and substituted a salad for the potatoes. Unfortunately he
