Review The Black Frog Eatery - Vancouver

Amanda Stewart
Good spot for a pint and meal. Great local beer selection and menu had all the variety you needed. We got the chicken fingers and spinach salad - both were good!

We arrived just before 5pm. There were plenty of choices when it came to seats. Beers were cold and refreshing. The first bartender offered me a drink to try so I would not be left out of the group. I did not get her name however she was pleasant and we felt very welcomed initially. Onion rings were fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, the next bartender to start his shift was a bit cold and refused to make eye contact with my friends and I after trying to make some light talk and left when we heard the first bartender was finishing her shift.

Only popped in for a couple of beers whilst visiting town. Driftwood brewery ipa very easy to drink đŸ»đŸ˜‰ Taken off one star as the waitress that served us seemed to have a bit of a grump on.

We really enjoyed our time at Black Frog. It was cozy, and te food and service was great!

Location and beer was good, service was not. It was a constant struggle to get our server’s attention. It looked like she intentionally avoided making eye contact with customers. We sat inside by the open window. It soon became very hot with one side of the table in direct sunlight. We attempted to lower the sunshade and we certainly got the server’s attention this time. We were told “don’t you dare” and another staff member near by said “you should have seen the knuckles of the last person who tried that”. We asked if there was another table. No response. I said “are these blinds not for the comfort of your customers?” Received a deer in headlights look from both. It did provide our table with the next conversation, comparing the service to the old Elbow Room. The difference is The Elbow Room’s poor service was all tongue in cheek. Too many pubs around to accept this kind of service.

Always a great time here. Great environment, good selection of drinks and friendly staff. We stop here everytime we are in Van.

LOVED this place. Great drink selection and super friendly staff. Will definitely visit again!

Two stars is for the food. My group of 11 came in (we had kids with us after a long day of sightseeing) and the server seemed very uninterested in accommodating us. Told us to figure out our own seating arrangements because he only had a table of 8 available (the restaurant was not busy at all). Rude customer service otherwise

Just went there july 2nd. The dude on the door was friendly and quickly approached us and asked if we needed a table. Cleared one for us outside, which was good because there was a shitload of flies inside flying around. Like way too many, maybe needs a flytrap. The firey redhead served us and was actually excellent for the first while. The pint i had was decent. Wings were awesome. Fries were soggy. Calamari was a bit tough and overbreaded which made it greasy tasting. During the meal the steamclock was going off which was cool to watch from our table. The sun came around and i drew down the shade because i was burning up. The dark haired waitress told me off for touching it. We finished our food and were gonna have more drinks but redhead never came back. We waited a long time, watching her serve other tables (mostly inside) and not think on us. My gf had an empty glass forever. We just wanted the bill after a while. We asked the dark haired server to let the redhaired one know that we wanted the bill but she did not relay the message. After quite a while of being bill-less and drinkless, she finally came our way and we flagged her down. She jumped little in suprise we were still there. She totally forgot we existed. We just paid the bill and got out of there. If I had my time back the tip would not have been 15%. Not at all well deserved in the end. Too bad, she was sooo good at first. Anyways we left. Dude on the door was still friendly and bid us a good evening.

I love this place. The service is always exceptional and those yorkie sliders are to die for.

Good food, good beers, great waiter and nice cool breeze on the patio.

Fish and chips were delicious as was The breaded spiced calamari. Staff very friendly and relaxing atmosphere. A nice place for a meal

We stumbled on the frog, loved it, came back the next day. Good, easy food, drink, and great service. Loved talking to Aussie bar keep, lovely lady. Sorry I didn't get her name. My bad :-(

Stumbled on this place while visiting the Steam Clock. Food was awesome and had great atmosphere

Love this place! Good food and drinks. A true hidden gem in Gastown!

Delicious fish & chips with a cold tap beer.

I wish I could have given this bar a good review, but I didn't even get the chance to sit down. Even though the restaurant was hardly full, our group of six was turned away--we were literally told to go to Lamplighter because they wouldn't add a couple of chairs to an empty table of four. Immediately sensing attitude on behalf of the server, I didn't want to eat there anyway so we took our business to Steamworks and spent $250 between us all. Too bad, Black Frog.

Are you an Oilers fan? Do you ever feel the need or just wish that you could escape the so-called "Canucks Fan" while you're living in, or visiting, Vancouver??! The Black Frog belongs somewheres between Whyte Ave and Jasper Ave, but it's in the heart of Gastown instead. Should there ever be a playoff match between the Canucks and Oilers, be prepared to lay down your life to protect The Black Frog from those latte w/skim milk drinkin', Lululemon wearing (God bless 'em anyways), rain-loving hipsters. Judging by the Canucks playoff records, we may never see them.. but enough of that, go down to the Black Frog and Go Oilers Go!!

Was there early last night for the game and waited for friends to show up while holding a table. I ordered food and drinks constantly, and when my friends got there (which was 45 minutes before the game), they would not allow them to come in! I even ordered them 2 beers clearly indicating that my table would be full and I wasn't just holding it for myself. I very clearly pointed to them outside, and asked if they could join me, but they refused saying that they were at capacity. I decided to leave as I was getting nowhere with the waiter or the manager. As soon as I left, they seated 4 people at my table! Extremely poor business practice and customer service. Will not be going there again. Very unfortunate.
Cathy Anwar
Unhelpful staff and poor food. Tried to charge for drinks we hadn't had.

Good spot - Oiler game in with volume. Solid wings and great staff.

We went here to have some snacks and the place was really good and the food was also served on time.
Both the quality and quantity of the food for up to the mark

Friday night hang out with 2 other friends here before our later dinner at Miku. Me and a friend got there first and we were asked to show some IDs hahaha cuz the security guy probably couldn't tell our age. Anyway the place was pretty busy but we were lucky to grab the last medium table for the 3 of us. I ordered Tom Collins (lemonade, gin, and soda) since it's one of the special on Fridays. It was quite refreshing and not too strong at all (I got the single). We also ordered some salt and pepper flavored chicken wings ($12) to share and nibble on before we headed over to Miku.

come here at noon for a short drink of beer. the place is nice surrounded by glass so we can enjoy the scenery outside like trains and streets. the service is also good. thank you
Justin
Extremely offensive staff. The way they speak to customers is absolutely unacceptable. The staff member at the door was very young, poorly dressed and extremely unprofessional. Behaving very strangely as we arrived. He was possibly high on cocaine. Very aggressive and not really helpful in trying to find us a server. We didn't even get menus. Had to read the one outside.

If you have a girlfriend you care about, I'd be very careful not to bring her here on a date. One of the men working here was extremely rude to her. I believe both men and women deserve an equal amount of respect.

I spoke to two managers. One of them fluffed off the situation and never called me back. The other made an excuse when I followed up to see what was done about the situation.

She then proceeded to give a very empty, fake sounding apology and essentially told me to go screw myself.

If you want to be treated with respect, then perhaps this isn't the place for you.

They simply don't care because they make so much money off tourists.

I'm very chill and easy going, but nobody speaks to me (or my girlfriend) like that and gets away with it. And now I must share my experience in order to make sure others don't find themselves in the same situation.

I am just gonna say what happened to me and my coworkers when we went there.

Service:
12:10 We got in, sat down
12:15 Waitress came, we ordered drinks and food
12:20: drinks came shortly after
1220-1155 nothing happened
12:55 one of us had to leave for a meeting, so he went told the waitress we cant wait for too much long and that he wanted to take his food to go
1:00 we complainted to them that it was taking too long
1:15 food finally came, the coworker left, and waitress came with food said oh I thought you guys were watching the game so we did not tell you guys the wait time. No apologies
1:30 everyone were so "hangry" and finished eating so fast
1:31 I asked for bills and machine
1:32 waitress came with just my bill, and a machine
1:33 I paid and my coworkers asked where the bills for them, the waitress said oh i thought only she wanted the bill
1:34: waitress came with the rest of the bills without machines
1:35 everyone finished paying

Food:
I can't say for others, but I waited 1 hour just for them to screw up on my chicken tender with fries. I got overcooked chicken, they were really dry and hard to chew, the batter was hard like rocks, the fries were okay.

TLDR: bad food, bad service, bad manner

I am never going back there.
Nikola VackovĂĄ
Really bad service! Even if it's not that full, you have to wait for a drink at least 20 minutes. And also the manager is really rude to customers, so you can't even complain about service there and you'll be kick out from that place!

NOT RECOMMENDED!

Nikola

We grabbed a couple seats at the bar and were happy to see they were screening the Australian Open. I got the Niçoise salad. They forgot to include the roasted baby potatoes (probably something the server should've noticed upon bringing out the dish) but they were then brought out on the side once I mentioned their absence. My sister got the moon burger which she thoroughly enjoyed. Our server was friendly and helpful. I loved all the sporting and miscellaneous memorabilia on display at the bar, it gave the place a warm, inviting local presence. I'd definitely give this place another go if I were in Gastown again.
Eat Sleep Eat Repeat
Good spot to grab a pint, the beer menu is pretty decent and they have specials throughout the week. The service was excellent albeit being fairly quiet on a Thursday night. We never had a chance to try the food but it seemed to be the typical Irish pub fare.
Alex
I'm sure everything else is worthwhile, but take the caesar salad off the menu. Literally just bag lettuce. No personal twist to justify it's price.
Kabir
Their beer "pint" glasses all seem to be different sizes. We got served in 3 different glasses, each of which are supposed to be 16 oz. But I highly doubt that all of them do, in fact hold that capacity. Aside from that, the place offers a nice beer selection, and good service!
Alex
Went to Black Frog for a late dinner and loved it! Had a table on the covered "patio" and it was such a fun, beautiful vibe. I was relieved to learn they had decent vegetarian comfort food (as opposed to just a typical lame salad.) I ordered the veggie chili fries and black bean quesadilla and they were delicious—totally hit the spot! Will definitely return here soon.
Teena In Toronto
I had supper this evening at the Black Frog ... I took a left at Cambie Street/Water Street by the steam clock in Gastown and there is was! The beer selection was excellent. I had Monday's daily special ... a saison from Four Winds in Delta. I ordered chicken wings with honey garlic sauce. They were delicious! Though they were loaded with lots of yummy sauce, the skin was still a bit crispy. I also ordered a side of roast potatoes and they were delicious too. Catherine and Tricia were my servers and they took good care of me. I'd go back! I wish this pub was in Toronto!

Enjoyed a Moon burger - big, juicy, & smothered in Brie. House salad - of which I'm usually suspicious at pubs – was quite good. Unfortunately they lacked any stouts or truly dark beer.
Sam Belleau
Microwaved. Black frog braised beef was cold warm and hot (obviously microwaved). Beware of the doorman he will jump out of nowhere and demand your ID because you have to be 19+ to eat disgusting food.
No Dessert Im Full
I like it!. The interior is super cool, giant tall bar with all kinds of liquor and various memorabilia placed around, server was very nice and attentive. The Moon burger was very very good! If you're a burger person I would recommend it!

Black Frog: Good for Herbivores and Carnivores!. My girlfriend and I have just moved to Vancouver and this was the first place we decided to eat at and it was great. The service was friendly and professional and we loved the decor and atmosphere (minus the Oilers jersey :P).

Since my girlfriend is vegetarian we find it difficult to find places that have vegetarian options, that aren't the same staples that most restaurants have, and have variety. Between the Vegetarian Chili, array of salads, and some sandwiches she was delighted. We started with the Spinach and Artichoke dip, which was quite tasty, it had a generous amount of artichoke which we loved since most spinach/ artichoke dips are a little light on the artichoke. I then had the Buffalo Wrap which was awesome to say the least, It's a personal favourite of mine and it was one of the best I've had. My girlfriend had the Grilled Eggplant sandwich which she found delicious, which believe me is a rare occurrence. We both had our meals with the house salad, it was very fresh with a delightful.

The price was modest for the food and location. Making it more affordable then most restaurants we saw. On top of the lovely meal I was very impressed with the variety of micro brews. We will most definitely be having another meal there.

Really enjoyed the pub. Interesting menu and Alternative music that I've never heard before. Food came quickly and was prepared well.
David Willis
Not bad food. We had the salmon salad and stuffed chicken. Chicken was a little overdone, but garlic mashed spuds were yummy. Doorman was a bit of a dink.
James
Take a pass. We ordered the spinach dip as an appetizer. It had clearly come out of a refrigerator and was still cold on top. As a main course I ordered the steak sandwich rare. It came out well-done (no pink whatsoever) and was a very pathetic piece of meat. I would have much rather paid an extra couple bucks for even a mid-level cut of beef. My girlfriend ordered the stuff chicken. Not bad, but it was overdone as well. To top it all off, our first round of drinks were finished as our main courses were started, but our second round was served as we took our last bites. They knocked off $7 for the overdone meat, but it will still be a definite pass the next time I'm hungry in Gastown.
The_eugene
Okay for pub food. Nothing special, the pulled BBQ chicken sandwich was mediocre. Grilled salmon salad was decent size, but fairly average. Not coming back for the food.
Julia C.
Decent enough. One of the cheaper places to dine in Gastown. Salmon burger is prepared simply. Club sandwich is plain. Drink specials during the week are a nice plus.
Austin Stanley
Pretty Good Eh?. Stopped in on a trip to Vancover, and found it pretty good. The food was decent and well presented. I especially enjoyed the Edamame appetizer. The staff was friendly, but the service a little slow. Ambiance was top notch, and a great location. Would eat here again.
Kahlua_coke
Decent. Was here on May long weekend Sunday for lunch. Had the burger, it was decent and about what I expected for the price. Pint specials for $5 were good.

Crap Food. Went here for lunch today. There was 5 of us, 3 of us got Cheeseburger's, 1 Reuben Sandwich and 1 Chicken Burger. The Burger was massive, but it was clearly a frozen generic patty and lacked any taste. I got a pop and cheeseburger my bill was $17 before tip, what a ripoff. My buddy said the Reuben was decent and my other buddy said the Chicken Burger was horribly dry. Avoid the food, this may be a drinks only spot.

Love this place! Great atmosphere, good drinks, staff is always entertaining and never skips a beat!
ScaryLarry
Great atmosphere, awesome list of draft beers and tasty simple pub food. They have great dj's on weekends spinning good rock n roll. Always a good spot for a hockey game or a few casual beers.
Melanie
Food is crap but this place is good for drinking. I think it might be the new "old" Irish heather. See lots of the same old faces from the past there. Rowdy. Steve the junkie keeps an eye on your dog outside for a tenner. :) this place is utterly without pretense.
Adam
Absolutely Disgusting!!!. My wife and I stopped in here for dinner over the weekend and ordered a couple of simple club sandwiches. What we were served tasted like boiled chicken on wonder bread. Both sandwiches were full of gristle and cartilage, had no flavor and half rotten vegetables. My wife almost choked to death when she tried to swallow a large piece of cartilage by accident. Neither of us could even eat the food and sent it back. We were still charged full price for the meal and were treated quite rudely! Not to mention the depressing atmosphere... the fact that the place was almost empty on a Saturday evening should have been a clue. This place should change it's name to the DEAD FROG... ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!

Looking at the menu, the selection of food is decent. It’s the quality that is concerning. It’s a good thing it was “Ladies Night” and I was too pre-occupied whining about all the reasons my life is sad to pay too much attention to my boring, bland chicken patty lying between my two dry pieces of bun.

Black Frog Eatery is located in Gastown right by the Steam Clock. M and his coworkers came here for lunch and I tagged along. I can’t say no to trying out new places. I’ve never noticed this place till now. It definitely looks like a sports bar with their big bar and all the sports scarves. Clearly I know nothing about sports. I just like to eat. I can see this would be a busy place during sports games, but since it was lunch time, there wasn’t much going on in here except a few people having lunch. BLT ($10) is served with mayo on a toasted multigrain bread. I got the house salad on the side. The house salad has canned mandarin oranges, sunflower seeds with a balsamic dressing. It was alright. Schnitzel Burger ($12) has deep-fried pork schnitzel with dijon, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. M got fries on the side. The food here is pretty standard for pub food. It was decent, but nothing that really stands out. We rate Black Frog Eatery : Address: 200 Cambie St Vancouver, BC Website: http://www.theblackfrog.ca/

Gastown has an amazing variety of restaurants and bars, and having my office at The Network Hub for the past three years has given me the opportunity to experience some of the nicest restaurants in the Gastown area. One that I had been trying to visit is
