Review Chongqing - Vancouver

Amabel Soewondo
We were craving for authentic Chinese cuisine, and we managed to find this restaurant in Robson St. We’re the only guest at that time, and the service is pretty slow, for the cooking. But they served us with hot tea. Highly recommended to order the Chongqing Beef, really delicious! And the fried spinach underneath the beef is so good. The Sweet & Sour pork is okay, but we are not a fan of the how they fry the pork. It’s kinda different from others. If I could give a 3.5 stars, I will!

Had visited this restaurant before, and with a craving for some Sichuan-style dishes, their Robson location was convenient. Service was friendly and attentive, got our order in and we got our food in no time. Had chow mein with beef and broccoli (soft noodles) and their "Deluxe" fried rice with shrimp and pork. Portions were quite generous, one of these dishes can serve 3-4 people... But it's not only about quantity, both dishes were quite flavourful. Nothing complicated, basically comfort food. Prices are very reasonable, all the reasons why we keep coming back.

We've ordered take out from here during pandemic and decided to come back and dine in. Food was good, especially chow main and green beans. Hot and sour soup was a bit disappointing.. I felt like it was missing some flavor. Portions are big so we even took some home. Place is very clean with very nice and fast service.

It’s wasn’t a wow factor for me. This is the first time I have been there. The place is small but clean, even tables and chairs have seen better days. The service wasn’t too bad. It was a slow day for them. Only one other table was occupied. The food was tasty and good size portions. I wasn’t fully satisfied due to a few factors. When I went to the washroom, you had to walk by the kitchen. This kitchen wasn’t the cleanest and organized kitchen that I had seen. Also, the other weirdest fact was staff ordered pizza hut pizza for their dinner. I’m not sure they don’t like to eat their food, or they just have their food all the time and need a break from that. I might go one more time try them again. Overall I would suggest you try ones.

Ordered for the first time, we ordered take out-the Resturant stated it would be 45 minutes- the restaurant is 5 mins away from our place. It finally arrived 1-1/2 Hours later- it was lukewarm. The shrimp with peanuts was awful, the shrimp was over cooked and dry, the entire dish had 5 shrimp and was mostly green peppers- the ginger beef was terrible!!… low grade of beef- liver tasting like hanger steak and a thick brown goopy sauce that was unappetizing, the Szechuan noodles were DRY- and I mean DRY!.. inedible! The only decent thing was the sweet and sour pork and the spring rolls would have been good if it wasn’t Cold- we ended up dumping the sweat and sour pork into the noodles to try to keep the dust from the dryness!! But the noodles were cold ! This Resturant wasn’t inexpensive- the meal was $95!… for two of us, we just moved to the area and this was a Huge disappointment! Our first meal at our new place and this Resturant ruined it! AVOID if you want hot Chinese delivery without waiting way too long and wanting something edible- waste of $95!!

Ordered for first time based on post recommending them. $100 for delivered dinner for 2, no rice. Tipped 20% up front, arrived 80 mins after ordering, twice as long as promised. It was inedible. Overcooked. Oversalted. Fattiest, oiliest Chinese food I’ve ever had, and I’m not picky. Order anywhere else for something better.

This is a great spot on robson for Chinese food. They have nice food, the portions and pricing are not as large or are the prices cheap as other places in Vancouver.

It feels like this place is a case of false adverting. They have written "Szechuan Cuisine" in the name and so we went here expecting some Spicy Szechuan food but it turned out to be the regular westernized bland Chinese food. We didn't detect sichuan pepper corns in even 1 single dish and in-spite of choosing all of the "most spicy" dishes, they had zero level of spice. We got the wontons with pepper and peanut sauce, chongqing chicken and prawns in chili sauce. The wontons was not the best wontons we have had but it was still better than the other two dishes we got. The chicken had too much soya sauce and that's all you could taste and the prawns was the worst thing ever, bland and watery. I think this place has so many reviews because of its location and people who prefer such bland take out Chinese food but if you like some good quality food this place is not worth it.

Always on point. Been going here (and the location off Commercial) for years and I always receive, consistently, the same good food. Tried many of their dishes but hands down, their Ginger Beef is the best thing on the menu. Well, I haven't tried their Dan Dan Noodles yet so maybe I will recant that statement but man is their Ginger Beef good. I'm also a fan of their Crispy Chow Mein, yum.

The lunch special is such a great deal, I highly recommend. Service is super fast and friendly. Love this place :)

Any foodie/resident in the downtown Vancouver area knows there is a serious lack of half-decent Chinese restaurants on this side of the bridge. That's why I was pleased with my first-time delivery from Chongqing (Robson location). I ordered 3 items from the Chef's Specials menu - chicken lettuce wraps, wonton with red pepper and peanut sauce, and the Singaporean shrimp and meat vermicelli noodles. The prices seem a bit higher than other places but that is because the quality is better (not greasy at all). the flavors are unique and delicious, and the portions are large. I have enough food to last me for 3-4 dinners. I took the advice of another poster here and called in my order instead of placing it online. The delivery person arrived right on the 45th minute, just as it says on their website. I also like that they only require an $18 minimum for delivery. I would definitely order from these guys again. I look forward to trying the Peking duck next time.

Being a huge noodle fan. I had to revisit this place after a huge let down somewhere else yesterday...And so glad I did! Ordered the beef with celery and dan dan noodles with pork chop..sooo good! The broth was flavorful for the beef and celery. The dan dan soup you can taste the peanuts with just enough amount of heat. Good customer service, my order came pretty quick and good portion size.

Don't let the decor steer you away.. It was anything but fancy, but the food was great. I don't know about "Authentic" but when my wife and I dove into our meal, we couldn't stop. The prawns and vegetables were a little bland, but overall it was good. The price was right as well. A definite hidden gem.

Delicious. Loved being able to order half size dishes as we were only two and could sample more choices. Great service and reasonably priced.

Ma po tofu was just as delicious as another poster's photograph of it! Ginger beef was also really yummy, with a few token vegetables (carrots & onions), but mostly crispy beef with a great sauce. Spiciness was appropriate to the markings on the menu. Spring rolls were indeed awesome. Fried rice was rather lightly fried (not brown-looking), but also really tasty. Good value and friendly service!

Peking duck. I went to Chongqing because it is was just across of my hotel. I had spring rolls and I have to say that I never had better spring rolls in Canada. Crispy and hot but not too fatty. I liked the dip as well which had a nice ginger taste. Then, I had the Peking Duck with "Crepe". Very good too. Crispy duck skin and tasty sauce. The waiter was very friendly and we had a nice chat. I really recommend it,

Decent. Went here for lunch with coworkers on a Monday. Great selection for their lunch menu ($8.95 with soup). Food is average Chinese, clean environment, great location (Robson and Jervis). I still prefer the ChongQing on Commercial though. Thanks!

All hits, no misses.. I love this place. Food is really delicious. Out of 10+ dishes we've tried on numerous visits, each has been a hit, with zero misses. The peking duck, ChongQing chicken, orange peel chicken, deluxe fried rice, szechuan fried rice, moo shoo with crepes, ChongQing noodles, Hot pepper won ton, Dai Ching chicken, Peppering Beef - I could go on. We've tried each of those, and been mightily impressed with every single dish. If you do like hot food (which the Szechuan province is renowned for), then this is the ticket. If a dish is marked hot, it will be spicier than your average chinese restaurant (which I love!). You can find your standard anglo-ised chinese options on the menu (sweet & sour, lemon chicken etc) but if you want a more authentic experience, try something the waiter recommends, or go for a spicy option. The space is very nice, and super clean. It's calm and welcoming, with a touch of luxe about it - nice banquette seating, chandeliers. The service is the best I've received in Canada/USA. They serve you complimentary tea (which is a delicious black tea with a hint of lychee) and frequently refill both tea and water. They give you lovely cool towelettes to cleanse your hands before/after eating, and they're so soft! No harsh wipes here. The staff have, on prior occasions, been kind enough to let us know that they think we've over-ordered. (In fact, we had over ordered, by a lot, but intended to take some home for lunch the following day). That in itself is amazing - they were potentially reducing the amount of $ they bring in that night by telling us we might have ordered too much. That's what I call service! They're attentive without being overbearing or intrusive. They do half-serves of pretty much everything, so you can try more dishes, which is great and even the half size serves are generous, more than enough for 2 or 3 people to share a couple of half size dishes + some rice and an appy or two. The half serve is probably equivalent to a full size serve at some other places I've been. So, overall, a fantastic place, zero complaints from me. My partner in crime is just delighted each time we go here, tonight he actually said the experience was like the very first time he had great yum cha/dim sum. That's high praise from him! We'll return again and again.

Mobile review. It's much smaller than its counterpart on Commercial, this place packs a punch in a small but elegant space. The Duck lettuce wraps were great and full of flavour. The hot and sour soup was also very good, the cup is a great cheap appetizer to start things off with. My favourite, the Chongqing deluxe fried rice was awesome. And the chicken chow mein pan fried noodles were good, the sauce could've used just a bit more flavour but nonetheless were good.

Real spicy (NOT 'Canadian spicy') food that was delicious so prepare to sweat! Orange Peel Chicken is highly recommended. Ginger Beef was too chewy, but that might be because it was delivered. Fast delivery!

For $8.95 the lunch special is hard to beat. Huge portions. Will be back for sure. The staff and interior is also really nice.

Thumb up... I am fan of Kirin dim sum but today I want to try something different so we visited Chongqing and there are a couple appetizer items in the menu that we like them when we were in the UK but rarely find in Vancouver which are Peking Duck in pancake and minced meat in lettuce. We are happy to see them again here and the taste is good. We also ordered lunch specials which offer 24 choices to choose with complimentary soup and rice for only $8.95 (very good value). We will visit again. Strongly recommended!

Peking Duck was really good.

On halloween 2011 ~ The food was okay but it was made with so much msg my throat killing me after finishing the meal & worse the next day.

The service was ok but the food isn't very authentic. The wonton with chili and peanut sauce tasted like wontons with oily peanut butter. The daiching chicken was tasty but too salty. Overall it's a nice place but with the copious amount of authentic, and well prepared, restaurants out there it's not worth a try unless your starving or not remotely picky.

Friday nights in my home are about two things – the immediate removal of pants and the grossly excessive consumption of greasy takeout. As soon as I step through the door after a long day of work, you already know my pants are off and I’m heading to the couch where I will more than likely remain for the following four hours. Greasy Friday featured the offerings of Chong Qing this evening. Specializing in Szechuan cuisine, it only seemed fitting that I kickstart my Thanksgiving weekend with heaps of spicy aromatic meat because if Thanksgiving isn’t about a little excess, what is? The dilemma around eating for two has always revolved around the number of dishes to order because while I might feel the urgent need to order four or more, reality and budgetary planning dictates we only order two. Ginger Beef goes without saying – any trip to Chong Qing just wouldn’t feel right without it. A jolt of flavour, this fragrant dish strikes a fun balance between sweet and savoury. Ginger, onions,

Wanna know what's lacking in a city filled with authentic and amazing Chinese cuisine? Americanized Chinese Food. No matter where I go, I can't seem to find a restaurant that serves high quality (North)Americanized Chinese food. It's really frustrating sometimes.

Ginger Beef: By far the best main dish that came out (even though they almost forgot about it). Crunchy, nice spicing, hot balanced by sweetness of orange rinds. Ginger taste not too overwhelming. A repeat.

Compare to the other types of cuisines, there aren't too many Chinese restaurants at Downtown. At least not that I know of. I've passed by ChongQing on Robson for a couple times but never really made it in there. Since we were trying to find a place for lunch and was feeling like Chinese, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant wasn't very crowded at all for a Saturday lunch time. The interior was very modern - black and white tone; very unlike the other Chinese restaurants where red would be the main colour. The service was also quite nice, probably because there weren't many people. They have lunch special, which definitely helped us to order. The lunch special came with a bowl of soup, the main item, and a bowl of rice. And there were quite a variety to choose from. Hot & Sour Soup (part of lunch special) - 5/6 & Chicken Corn Soup (part of lunch special) - 5/6 I like the Hot & Sour soup - it was just the way I like how it should be done. There was quite a bit of veggies in there
