Review Red Umbrella Cafe - Vancouver

Allison Patterson
We stayed for 4 nights on English Bay and for our 2nd breakfast, we came to the Red Umbrella. Food…as you can see…is generous and beautifully presented…and DELICIOUS. The coffee was amazing. The staff were fun and attentive. We even got to watch birds trying to make a nest in the awning outside. Great place to eat and people watch. Davie is a fun street. We’re vegetarian and there were tons of fresh choices for us and bacon lovers alike. We’ll be back!

If you come here, be ready to wait until 45 minutes in the waiting list. Later if they are busy as today, it will take other 45 minutes to 1 hour to get your food ready. So prepare yourself to wait for more than 1 hour for eating. Today after waiting so much time, they brought our food and the quality was not good as other time. Bacon an ham were too oily. I don't recommend Red Umbrella Cafe this time and I'm seriously thinking if I will come again in the future. They spent so much time in serving us that when finally we were eating, they started to clean the restaurant for closing. That clearly made me to feel in a rush and ate in 10 minutes. Wait more than 1 hour and eat in 10 minutes, that definitely is not a good deal man 👎🏻

Just so good! Totally worth the hype and what I read about this place! Wait was totally worth it! Lovely staff, they are so sweet and helpful considering how busy they get! Best sandwich I have tasted in vancity! Don’t miss their Nutella brownie! Worth it!

I was absolutely blown away by the breakfast! Huge portion with fresh food, a good variety and the most friendly staff. I sat outside and it was so nice to enjoy a beautiful meal in the sunshine. Place is clean, food is amazing and the staff couldn’t be nicer. This is an absolute must when in Vancouver. I highly recommend trying their bread - it’s made in house!

Best breakfast I had in West End Vancouver! I Had omelette with avocado and smoked salmon, a Flat white coffee also. Sure I will come back on weekend for Eggs Benedict

It was a great place to be with friends and enjoyed a nice breakfast. Food was tasty, a bit pricey, they attended us fast and was quite good overall. It is a small place but liked it.

Extraordinary fantastic taste of food! Every single bite is a tast of rainbow and heaven in mouth. The food is so flavourful and delicious. The presentation is spectaculars and it satisfy eyes too. Delicious homemade bread, the perfect cook potatos, real great quality bacon, excellent always fresh salad and greens, THE Best HOLANDAISE sauce on the world! Did I mention the wonderful friendly staff?!! There are multiple vegetarian options on menu as also for real meat lovers! Redumbrella is on top 10 best breakfast place in vancouver for a reason! Higly recommend who want guaranteed delicious breakfast and coffee for reasonable price! The owner is a genius! On pic I have Redumbrella benny and vegetarian benny

Enjoyed every bite - especially the home made multigrain bread. Good news: nicely prepared meals, competent service, no line up. Bad news: no eggs Benedict on weekdays.

My favourite breakfast place BY FAR! It is simply the best spot! Delicious food, best mocha and friendliest staff! Red Umbrella you never disappoint! Love it!!!

The menu looked well planned and diverse, and the staff was kind and helpful. The Red Umbrella Burger was genius. Typically when a place names a burger after themselves they just throw bacon and and some weird sause on it and call it there's. The Red Umbrella Burger is not typical. The amount of well-planned vegetables was enjoyable, the patty was of great size and well cooked, and the sauce was complex and wonderfully tasty. I partnered it with there French Vanilla Latte, witch came in a lovely presentation and was prepared very well. I was pleasantly suprized and would definitely recommend Red Umbrella Cafe to anyone.

I have tried a couple of places downtown but by far the Red Umbrella is definitely the best spot for a brunch. Food is outstanding and beyond my expectations. I should probably try the other items on its menu because I always order my favorite: the Deluxe breakfast. No words can describe how delicious that scramble eggs are. Service is great and always friendly. I definitely recommend the Red Umbrella Cafe!

The food was quite good, the service excellent and prices very reasonable. The place was packed (for a reason, of course!), so it was a little more "tight" than "cozy", but was still a wonderful meal overall. Very cute little place, too.

Never write reviews but this place deserves it. My family of 6 and I went to this place last week and we all left saying it was the best breakfast we had ever had. So good!
Nate Patterson
Wonderful little cafe. Service, food and atmosphere were all excellent! Would highly recommend to anyone in the English Bay Area.

The food is expensive, $7 for a small bowl of fruit was ridiculous. The coffee tasted burnt. It was the only place open at 8 nearby.

Excellent food, friendly waitress (well she was Irish so of course she was friendly) , great value for money, very busy and maybe a tad longer of a wait but worth it

Absolutely love it! Visiting Vancouver and it was my second time there today! The staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is great! And the menu is great, the food is delicious!

Had a great brunch! Had the deluxe breakfast with a coffee. The restaurant is a little squishy but typical for Vancouver. Line up outside the door, which means to us it's very popular! Fresh home made bread, so good and they even had samples of the brownies ( which were so delicious and not too sweet) great service- allowed us to move outside when there was a free table. You can bring your dog and they have dog bowls for outside. Great atmosphere, close to English Bay! Coffee is strong

Petit bistro charmant, l'omette au saumon sauvage un pur délice A charming bistro style and delicious food!

My boyfriend has taken me there for coffee before, but yesterday he took me there for brunch for the first time. I tried the Breakfast Salad, and it was fantastic! Seemed like an expensive price, but it was a very large serving of a variety of different ingredients, all of which tasted fresh and perfect. The eggs, bacon, and avocado were some of my favourite parts!

We stayed at the Best Western Sands and the second day we discovered the Red Umbrella Cafe. We loved it so much that we had breakfast there again. It’s only a short walk from the hotel.

Amazing food. Lovely staff. Good coffee.

Best food and best people in the west end. Nothing compares.

Very disrespectful customers. Food is not that good and over price

Overpriced food. We found hair in our food, no apologies and grumpy service

The worst experience ever:( The server was very unprofessional when I asked about the size of pancakes. She told me it is always different, but when I got my 2 pancakes, the size was giant.
When I paid my bill, she started to argue with me: “Madam, our pancakes are homemade so size is always different” and she walked away from me. Very sad, because I would never come back. Even though pancakes were delicious.
Hope management will pay more attention in training their employees.
We chose this without research, just a whim and a good vibe about the place. And we were not mistaken. Not the biggest place in the world, there was a constant flow of customers many of whom seemed like regulars. The food was very good and there was a lot of choice. The service was first class and we would recommend The Red Umbrella with hesitation to anyone who is in this area of Vancouver. A small gem of a place.

Disclaimer: I've only sampled the desserts at this restaurant, so my review will only be based off of their sweets.

This is a casual breakfast/lunch joint located on Davie, just a few blocks away from English Bay. They offer the usual array of breakfast and sandwich items, as well as various pastries. The place is small and appears to be quite popular, and there was a lineup outside the door during breakfast hours. Since I just wanted to get some baked goods for takeout, I didn't have to wait in line to receive a seat. I had their Lemon Cheese Cake, Carrot Cake, and Chocolate Cake. The desserts were homestyle and rustic, and while they did not blow me away, they were still tasty and quite affordable. Be warned if you plan on eating in: the place does get quite crowded and it can be a bit difficult to move around; while waiting for my pastries to be packed, I had to squeeze myself against the counter just to allow staff and customers to get past me, so if you're claustrophobic, you might want to reconsider visiting.

Lemon Cheese Cake ($6):
4/5
The cheesecake itself was quite soft and creamy (not the New York variety), with a great tang and a nice lemon scent. It appears to be topped with a layer of creamy, tangy cream cheese frosting. I was a bit disappointed with the crust however, which had become quite soggy and fell apart when I tried to move the cake from the box.

Carrot Cake ($5):
3.5/5
The cake was dense, but relatively moist, and was filled with shredded carrots. It had a slight bit of spice to it, I would have preferred the spice to be a bit more assertive. The cream cheese icing was smooth and creamy but a bit bland - I didn't get too much sweetness or tang.

Chocolate Cake ($4.50):
3/5
The cake was relatively tender, albeit a bit dry and had a good flavour of cocoa. The icing had a really nice fragrance of coffee to it. Overall, I did find the cake to be a bit on the bland side. It was tasty, but nothing special; the kind of dessert that you'd be able to get from a regular bake sale.

It was really busy when I went on Sunday but once seated we were served quickly. BLT had super crispy bacon and the deluxe breakfast was everything you want for weekend brunch. Will be going again soon!

Nice service and reasonably priced food. Had a simple but delicious breakfast here and was served very quickly in a friendly manner. Would definetly go back again!

The wait time was exceptionally long. Terrible service. The staff could not have been less enthusiastic about their jobs! There are better brunch places nearby.

Bad. Was there on Sunday around 130. 45 min wait for breakfast is unacceptable. Was told they were out of Benny's and saw more came out after that. Went inside to see how much longer it was going to be and never got an answer so we left at about 2 30. Poor service and long wait for food. Won't be coming back to this local neighborhood place.

Great breakfast! Sausage a bit dry , but bacon crisp and egg well seasoned. Best part---- the bread!!! This tiny cafe bakes their own airy multi grain whole grain bread fresh. It's rich and flavourful. U will want to, and u can buy bread to bring home .

We found our new breakfast spot!!!
Wow! What quality and such nice attentive staff... We'll be back. (Soon!)

Fantastic!. The renovations under new management have turned this once divey joint into a really beautiful and serene room...casual but elegant. The ultra-fresh food is really fantastic...and reasonably priced.
Our new fave in Vancouver! 4 stars out of 3!!

Everything was Perfect!. Im surprised there aren't more good reviews for Red Umbrella, I absolutely LOVE the breakfast here, it has so much flavour and tastes fresh. The bread is made in house (The Rye bread is delicious, you must try it!) and the coffee was fantastic. Service was good and the place was very bright and clean, I love everything about it. Will be going back again and again!

I have been here many times and it is always good food but the worst service ever. Such a shame.

Food was good. Latte was great and drip coffee good too. They didn't give you much eggs though if you order scrambled. Good service.
No Dessert Im Full
Brunch, Yes please!. Great tasty menu that has everything you could want for breakfast/brunch. I had the classic breakfast with a side of french toast. Eggs were good, the hash browns were interesting, they were served with sauteed onions and something else? I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Sausages were good, and the french toast was done right. Good meal :)

Under new management, homemade bread is amazing. The veggie delight sandwich here is great. Very fresh and tasty. The bread (which is made in store) is absolutely amazing. The best bread I've ever had.

New management!!!. This place got a little reno and the quality of the food has gone up nicely since new management has taken over a month or two ago. Back in the day I would usually roll in here half asleep in sweats and a toque and feel overdressed... well this time I felt underdressed! But the main server (perhaps owner?) was very sweet and it seems like the same old variety of eaters... everyone comes as they are.

Onto the food. Eggs are REALLY good here now. Not hit or miss. I've had scrambled and over hard and I loved both. Breakfast potatoes are really yummy... I don't know what they did to them but they are full of flavours. They are also giving out some delicious tart-sweet homemade jam to go with the toast. Yum. Oh... one final thing... my partner got pancakes and they were DELICIOUS and I wanted to eat them all but we were so full we couldn't finish. Sweet and fluffy. My only mild complaint is that the soymilk in my latte tastes super bland and extra beany... but this is really not a big deal. I think it might be a more authentic kind of soy milk? I would go for drip coffee over a latte next time.

Amazing place to be at in the morning! Delicious food and service worth way more than they actually charge! Anything you pick from the menu will be very good quality and designed really pretty, we have tried four different dishes:) It was our first morning in Vancouver and for the first place we walked in to we were more than satisfied! My friends and I are hospitality students, and we guarantee you that's the place you want to go back to for caring people and lots of sun through the window:)

What a disgrace!!. This place is disgusting. The floor is filthy. The waiter looked like he actually slept in the clothes he had on and didn't bother to wash his hair or shave. The chair I sat in was broken. The orange juice came in a piping hot fresh from the dishwasher glass, so they put ice cubes in the orange juice.I had eggs benedict and the english muffins were not toasted at all. The ham was uncooked deli ham and the hollandaise sauce was like water. I complained and they said "oh I am sorry" and collected their money no comps. I will never eat at this dive again.
It's A London Fing
Awful! Disgruntled servers, dirty tables, unimaginative menu (unless you want two pieces of toast with two servings of jam, which seemed to come with every breakfast option). To top it off, the server sneezed into the palm of his hands, twice! I hope he washes them before the next customer braves the experience!
HumbleChef
Disappointing! I don't mind spending 9 bucks on breakfast if it's good. Panfried potatoes where reheated in the microwave, bllech! The sausages where so cold the lard solidified. The rye toast was the best part of the meal. Service seemed to be a struggle. I wouldn't recommend this place for breakfast.

A Lonely Diner. A lonely diner sits on a street corner waiting, as the daytime fades into nighttime, for somebody, anybody, to stop by at least for a little while. The weather-worn exterior doesn't help it, as it struggles to be noticed apart from the excitement and bright lights of nearby Denman Street. People just walk on past, already having satisfied their cravings... they walk on past this lonely diner not far from where hungry people go... not far, yet too far already.

One couple did notice, however, and so took a seat inside. The diner was just a bit more content now.

Inside, we could hear Michael Buble singing softly, and it would be a proper analogy to say that as far as diners go, this diner was more Michael Buble than Frank Sinatra. The interior decor had a charm of its own, although it definitely was missing a few key items that would give it the proper feel.

The lone waitress was friendly, and was nice enough to turn up the heat when she saw that we had switched seats to be away from the window. They also gave me a nice new pile of mayonnaise, when the mayonnaise for my fries that I initially got was exhausted.

The food was decent, the service was decent, but the diner still felt lonely. We were in fact the only customers for the entire 30 minutes that we were there (we were there on Sunday evening at around 6:00 p.m.). After we left, I'm sure the diner felt lonely once again...

Good breakfast

... soft and moist, not crisp at all (slight marks deduction here) but oh.. soo... buttery....; the top of the pancake was probably slathered with salted butter that was then allowed to seep down; one letter - mmm...
