Review Les Faux Bourgeois - Vancouver

Arthur Kwan
Been here multiple times and every dish I've tried so far we loved . The flavors are so we'll balance . Simple yet very tasty. The price is more than reasonable and portions are generous. My go-to place when craving French food

I cannot say enough great things about this establishment. Our waitress first of all, was so tentative, personal and considerate! We didn't catch her name but she was such a joy to have serve us for the evening. Like most people we looked over thr reviews before dining at Les Faux Bourgeois, and found that a lot of people recommend the grilled squid and beef tartare. Let me tell you, the squid was so tender, you wouldn't even think it's squid. So juicy and succulent. The beef tartare was the star of the evening, I can see why they also have an entree size! It was amazingly tasty and full of flavour. A must try if you are trying this restaurant for the first time. For our mains we got the confit duck and the special which was a crispy pork chop with asparagus and a sort of salad. Everything was super yummy and we will definitely come back to try the other menu items!

Just happened to see this place driving by, and it piqued my interest. The reviews really do it justice..the food was amazing and the service as equally as great! We got the beef carpaccio, escargot to start, and the pork chop special and steak frites for our mains. Also got a creme brule and a lemon tart to go. Everything was cooked perfectly, and portions are very generous.

One of the best French restaurants in Vancouver. Amazing food and great cost benefit. In my opinion, even one of the best restaurants in general.
Laura Ibba
Nice little restaurant with a good atmosphere. The tables are tiny and the lights are dim, good for a date night. The canard confit was very good, but I wish the appetizer Mon Pleasant Picnic had more cheese and chacuterie options.

Really reminded me of sitting in a bistro in Paris. Great place if you want some well-priced French food in a cozy restaurant. They have plexiglass dividers between tables, great French food, and attentive service. Only con was that the bathrooms were a bit sketchy & Amex isn’t accepted. We got there at exactly 5PM and were able to be promptly seated as a walk-in. Had the tenderloin steak which had a wonderfully succulent centre, but I thought the crust was over-salted. Crème brûlée was perfectly done & at $8 was a great deal.

We were on our way to driving to another restaurant when we spotted this little gem. Having been disappointed in the first five minutes in the original place, we headed back for Les Faux Bourgeois, even though it was an hour from closing. Maybe it was the cool of the night, or the French name, but we were already interested in the place. They had sitting inside and out, we opted for the outside. The brought us three baskets of bread and butter generously before our food was served with a bottle of cool water. The Cocktail I ordered was super delicious and so was the food. Our waitress was extra attentive and kind and it was a pleasant evening. We are definitely going back!

Amazing place. Celebrated Valentines Day here with my wife and had a lovely window seat for the evening. The staff were knowledgeable and polite, and the ambiance was cozy and warm. The food was next level. I had the duck and my wife had the tenderloin, both were seasoned to perfection and rich and vibrant in flavor. It made us feel like we were experiencing old dishes for the first time again. I cannot say enough good about this place. Worth every penny.

Amazing food , great service , wonderful atmosphere. Our waiter helped with picking the right glass of wine with the right dish! It was an exceptional experience!

Such a fabulous restaurant! Intimate room...very MCM with the warm wood walls and brass lighting. Incredable steak and frites...even better than Paris. The servers are amazing and the food is always a delight. It is a highlight every time we travel to Vancouver...and we'll visit 3 out of 7 nights...seriously! Merci beaucoup for the excellence in dining. :)

Amazing food 😊 I love this place . Celebrated my birthday there and had a great time. I wish the menu for more than 10 people wasn’t that limited. Overall, everyone was happy with both food and service.

I had the best night in a very long time. Our service was top notch awesome, and the food was spectacular!

Love this place. Great service and the food is amazing. Hard to find a table sometimes so we try to go early in the week when it's not too busy. Highly recommend

My first time to this restaurant and I was so impressed! Great food and atmosphere, excellent service. Highly recommend.

Been a favourite place of mine for many years. The room is beautiful as if out of your favourite scene in a classic romance movie, the ambiance is lovely and the energy of the place has a way of making you feel at home and the people there feel like family. Also- best crème brulée ever! So really, it's a win win win situation all around!

Good food, but not worth putting up with the bad: the service is beyond bad, reservations are completely dysfunctional, and they cram WAY to many people into the space.
Eleni Gomes
Love the food here. Always consistent. Great service, great menu. If you are looking for quality must try this place. Always busy so reserve ahead!

I got food poisoning the last time I ate here. Contacted the restaurant and was ignored. Will never be back. Avoid the cassoulet.

This by far is some of the best food around! Everything is delicious! Service is amazing as is atmosphere!

Waited 3 years to try this place and was not disappointed. We sat at the bar and everything was lovely, even had a chit chat with my neighbour on the stool beside me.
Stacey Waugh
The food was amazing, the staff was awesome, the atmosphere was totally relaxing. I had a wonderful time here and will definitely go back.

Delicious food, great service, and reasonably priced! One of my favourite restaurants!

Tonight was the 3rd time we have visited this restaurant, and although our first two visits were lovely, this was really disappointing. The special was lamb shank, and I asked the waiter what he would recommend between the lamb shank and Le Steak Frites. He said definitely the steak, as it is their signature dish. I ordered it medium, and it comes already sliced up, and it was obviously rare. Not even close to medium. The chef should have seen this before it went out. No big deal - I sent it back to be cooked a little more. Meanwhile, my wife is eating her dinner. It comes back, looks great, pink but not raw, but is tough. Chewy tough. I tried a few pieces, and it was inedible. I have had their steak before and they are obviously using lesser cuts of meats. It can happen. However, my wife was almost done her dinner and so it did not make sense to order another meal. When I spoke to the waiter about it obviously being raw, he said it is not about the colour, but the texture. Seriously? Basically, he told me I was wrong. I had to have the cheese plate for dessert because I was still hungry. The final bill came to over $200 - I had two after-dinner drinks, and the only thing they did was comp the lemon tart my wife had, an $8 item. Seriously? If anything, they should have comped one of my dishes or preferable one of my drinks.I have a three strike rule and they hit it plus one - badly cooked food, poor quality meat, confrontational service, and a lack of reasonable compensation. This place used to be great.. it has obviously changed. It is not the same. The people beside us felt the same. So, there are lots of other places where your food dollar will go a lot further.

it was Nice... ambience was good....food was good but deserts are far better than main course and starters... although price was slightly higher but overall it's good

This place is always so busy we had to book a reservation two weeks ahead just to get spot as we wanted to see what all the hype was about. We ordered two appetizers, the escargot and pate. The pate was nice, escargot was okay but quite oily. For the mains we ordered the bouillabaisse and confit. I know we're in the minority here, but we found the food to be very bland and underwhelming. The prices are average and the service was fine. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but definitely not worth the wait for us. We would not recommend.

The food and service was excellent. I had the salmon and it was tasty. The cheese plate and squid was shared and also fantastic. We were seated in the window and the seats there are not the most comfortable. I would probably request a different table next time.

Les Faux Bourgeois is a quaint casual restaurant with a lovely bar, black boards for their specials and dark mid-century look. <br/><br/>Great French cuisine with a reasonably-priced for the amount and quality of food.<br/><br/>The service is pretty average, but they get the job done with good timing between courses. <br/><br/>Overall, Les Faux Bourgeois has satisfied our craving for a little Paris in the heart of East Vancouver.<br/><br/>Tip: reservations are highly recommended - as this is a neighbourhood favourite!

I have delayed this blog post for too long, but I finally have time sharing my birthday dinner experience with you all. For the past years, I chose a different restaurant to go to, somewhere that has been on my to-go list for the longest time. There is no exception for this year, and we decided to choose a restaurant that is known for its authentic French cuisine – Les Faux Bourgeois.

Very difficult to get a reservation but well worth the wait. I had a wonderful steak that was extremely tender and so delicious. The entire meal including the wine was amazing. I love the ambience and would highly recommend you try this place at least once.

French bistro<br/><br/>Menu consists of typical items you would find at a french bistro. <br/><br/>Atmosphere is decent. The room is dim and perfectly lit with candles. Great for a date or dinner with friends. <br/><br/>Food is absolutely fantastic. Onion soup is phenomenal. Classic with the right amount of cheese. Fillet of beef is very nicely done. I asked for it rare and that is how it came. Seasoned wonderfully. <br/>Creme brulee this is the best i have had outside of Provence, France. Smooth velvety perfection. Try it!<br/><br/>4.5/5<br/><br/>100% will return again and again.<br/>

Been here a couple of times now and the food will blow you away.  I will agree with other reviewers that the service can be cold and rather rude... but that food... I will endure that service for that food every time.

Was back here recently, and was really impressed with the fresh flavours. Food was was well presented but more importantly, the bison steak entree was amazing. My dining partner had the risotto which was well prepared, not overly rich and nicely seasoned.<br/>As always, it's always a full house here, even on a weeknight but we managed to be seated at the bar. <br/>Service 4.5<br/>Food 4.5<br/>Ambiance 4<br/>Price 5

Always like the vibe here but tonight was off. I guess it's the early 5:30 seating. Can't get in the door till then and have to be finished by 7:30. Rushed to order, rushed to eat, take away my plate with food on it a number of times, and our food bill alone of $120.00 (not a lot) didn't leave the aftertaste that it could have! I'll be looking elsewhere for awhile.

A great place to bring a date. Romantic ambiance and dim lights. The staff is very professional and the food is pretty good. The duck confit was nice and i really enjoyed the hangar steak with frites. We finished our meal with their signature creme brûlée.

Great atmosphere, amazing food! It really resembles a high quality restaurant in Paris. The staff speak french and know how to make their guests feel welcomed
Naoki_art
Never a disappointing meal. Classic French offerings in a dark, wooden bistro atmosphere. Their steak frites are among the best around and our last trip had the biggest and juiciest mussels I've ever seen. The stomach-filling cassoulet is heart warming and rich. Service is friendly and efficient without being overbearing.

French cuisine pretty much pioneered and globalificationified the big-small-big rule: big plate, small food, big price. Sure, each morsel of food packs a suitcase of flavour… but if you’re not actually full, does it even count as a meal? Thankfully, Les Faux Bourgeois doesn’t follow this suit, offering both mouth-drooling and stomach-filling food at a wallet-happy price.
Pickybun
Finally went to Les faux bourgeois after years of finding this restaurant. Interior was quite simple and much bigger than it looks exteriorly. Atmosphere as quite loud due to large parties of people. Our waiter was very attentive and quick. The food was average, but will come again if we want classic French dishes. Overall good experience.

Called in late May 2016 for a July 2016 reservation. I told them I was calling early to make sure the date and time was available because it was my Dad's birthday dinner.<br/><br/>On the day of the dinner, we brought a cake and I was told at the door that there was a cake service fee for outside desserts. I asked them why I wasn't told on the phone when I called to make the reservation because I had said it was for a birthday. The host replied by saying that the information is on the restaurant's website. <br/><br/>For the record...THERE IS NOTHING on the website about this fee cause I checked that night after I left the restaurant. They wanted to charge me $2.50/person. Host also said that I should have asked about a cake cutting fee when I called to make the reservation. EXCUSE ME?!?!? If I'm calling and saying that it's a Birthday reservation, it is not the due diligence of the restaurant to advise on the fee?...The same way when one books a dinner for a large group, you will be advised that gratuity is included when there is "x" number of people? Correct?<br/><br/>So when I was paying for the dinner, my sister asked to speak to the manager. The waiter came back and told us that she could go speak to the person at the bar. Say what?? She was told she can walk up to the bar to speak to the manager and there he was...drying glasses. I couldn't believe it. She was so pissed especially when she has worked in food service for over 10 years.<br/><br/>So guess what? For my Dad's 60th birthday day - we had to drive back to Burnaby to cut his birthday cake. Wonderful right?<br/><br/>I called that night and left a scathing voicemail. A gentleman by the name of Amiel called me back the next day or so. I explained to him that a cake cutting fee is no biggie and I have happily paid it but to be not told ahead of time and be spoken to by the host like I was a damn idiot is absolutely not acceptable. He asked me what could be done to rectify to issue and I told him that a dinner for my parents would be great as it was a terrible birthday experience. He told me that their dinner "would be taken care of".<br/><br/>I don't mean to be presumptive but in the world of food service, doesn't that usually mean the bill is taken care of or a portion of the bill? So I make a reservation with Amiel for my parents.<br/><br/>My parents had dinner there tonight and was given the full bill. YES..the entire f'g bill. What they get as "special treatment" you ask? A glass of sparkling wine. I say..you can keep your damn wine cause I can buy that myself.<br/><br/>I use to think so highly of this restaurant and referred it to multiple friends but never again. Disappointed is a complete understatement. I'm so embarrassed that my parents had to experience this especially for my Dad's birthday.<br/><br/>PLEASE DO NOT GO TO RESTAURANT. They are stuck up and so full of themselves. Forgot the price for value cause their prices have changed and so have the attitudes of their staff.<br/><br/>Utterly disgusted at the poor service and insincere attempt to fix something.

French cuisine for those on a budget! Les Faux Bourgeois is the place to go for authentic french food without the posh ambiance and prices. The restaurant is easy to find; just a bit north of Kingsway & Fraser. Though there isn’t much going on in the surrounding neighbourhood, inside Les Faux Bourgeois is very vibrant and welcoming.

Though there isn't much going on in the surrounding neighbourhood, inside Les Faux Bourgeois is very vibrant and welcoming.<br/><br/>Our server (he sounded French, so that added authenticity I suppose) was very attentive during throughout our dinner. He kept a friendly smile, refilled our water promptly, and offered loaves of bread (we loved their bread). He even fixed our wobbly table without us asking!<br/><br/>For our dinner, we ordered four dishes. Every one of them was under $30 :O<br/><br/>Soupe à l'oignon gratinée ($10)<br/><br/>A classic French onion soup. Beneath the layer of baked gruyère and mozzarella were large chunks of French bread drenched in soup. There were also caramelized onions and smoked bacon. Even with all the heavy ingredients, the soup wasn't overly salty.<br/><br/>Mon Pleasant Picnic ($13)<br/><br/>This was a decadent plate of assorted cheeses, cured meats, pickled veggies, nuts, and jams & spreads. It was quite an adventure experimenting with all the flavour combinations. I didn't know pickled cauliflower could be so tasty.<br/><br/>Filet de boeuf grillé ($25)<br/><br/>A beef tenderloin in red wine & shallot sauce. The steak was a bit charred on the outside, but still very moist and tender on the inside (medium rare). You can't go wrong with steak and red wine. This dish also came with two other variations: mustard butter, or peppercorn sauce. We shall try those next time :)<br/><br/>(Nightly special) Pan Seared Duck Breast ($26)<br/><br/>Port jus, cauliflower purée, and roasted veggies. The duck breast was perfectly seared; the skin was salty and crackling, and the meat was tender and just slightly pink in the center. Very filling portion size too!<br/><br/>Food: 4.5/5<br/><br/>Value: 4.5/5<br/><br/>Service: 5/5<br/><br/>Ambiance: 4.5/5<br/><br/>Total: 18.5/20<br/><br/>Would definitely go again!

I honestly don't know why so many people rave about this restaurant. The food is not terrible but it's not great like what everyone said. We got the steak and the fish dishes and we thought the food were so so but not great. We also had the creme brûlée which is good but not great. Overall the food was alright but I'll go there again when I'm in the mood for French food

My wife and i arrived for dinner. We like siting side by side. We were seated facing each other. So when we sat together side by side, 2 customers beside us got claustrophobic and ask to be moved. That was fine with us. The problem was when the waiter asked me to go back to my seat instead of movig us to a bigger table. We ended up at the bar stools. Ive been waitering for more than 15 years. Never would i ask my customer to go back to their seat. So we left and this is what happends. The restaurant gets a bad rating from me. Too bad we didnt even get to try the food. This is why you cant just hire anyone off the street. Tarnishes a restaurants reputation so easily.
Picky Diner
Just sitting down, I found the dining room of Les Faux Bourgeois likeable. The slightly dim lighting might not be photography friendly, but it created a warm and intimate ambiance, fantastic for unwinding or having a romantic dinner. A family of 6 or 7 sitting at a table next to ours seemed to be enjoying their dinner in the peaceful atmosphere, with their papa quietly sipping on a small glass of Absinthe, and slowly cutting his steak.<br/><br/>Their menu seemed genuine and humble, featuring mostly Bistro dishes, nothing too fancy. Some classic French favourites on the menu caught our eyes such as Escargots De Bourgogne, and Boudin Noir for our appetizer choices. I also picked the Pan Fried Sweet Bread on their daily special board. I think the lighting had made the colours of the dishes very similar, somehow the flavours were very similar as well. I was very excited to try Boudin Noir and sweet bread the first time at a French Bistro, but I did not find the dishes particularly great and memorable.
Everything But Weddings
C'était très bon! Les Faux Bougeois is a lovely date night restaurant. It had a very romantic atmosphere and delectable French cuisine without attitude. My suggestions: start with the escargots, plump and juicy, perfectly served with crostini... canard confit and veal shank were both amazing. The duck had crispy skin (could've been crispier though) but the burst of flavour was there, and the veal was so tender, loved it with the veggies that accompanied it. To end off the night, we had the poached pears galette. Wow that was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The pastry was nice and flaky and the pears were not too sweet. A nice light dessert to complement a rich meal. The cherry on top, our server spoke to us en français. Merci beaucoup pour un repas inoubliable.

Tasty meal! Started off with the warm goat cheese salad and the French onion soup. Both of us had steak to follow up our starters. <br/><br/>Staff were quite friendly and were able to squire us in before a reservation later that night. <br/><br/>Nice place to dine in the Mount Pleasant area.

Great food ... Mediocre service ... BAD ATTITUTE SERVER. Lazy and unwilling to help. I would not recommend you to go if you want a good French food experience.
DavidTheFoodie
This is not a high end french restaurant. But the food and wine are awesome. They have some classic french dishes like duck confit, steak and escarot. Personally I like the mussels with white wine cream sauce and bacon. Last but not least, try their crème brûlée.

Best thing about my visit was the bartender Niko. He was quick and polite but his recommendation were ok except his valudation for the bordeaux blend which should ONLY be a wine with food and not dor drinking alone.<br/><br/>French onion soup tasted exactly like itnsupposed to. Nothing terrible but nothing great, was a dish i could have not ordered.<br/><br/>The canard confit was nicely done. French as known for subtle and simple flavours. This was exactly that, slow cook duck that was cooked nicely, with fresh spinach, goat cheese and garlic potatoes? Was just good quality ingredients that represented comfort food French style. The bordeaux blend went excllent with the duck for it cut through the fatness and creaminess of the dish. Would definitely come back.<br/>

This is a romantic French restaurant but it is still a good place to hang out with friends. <br/><br/>My friends and I ordered French onion soup, salad, mussels with frites and hanger steak with frites. It's just the steak that tasted a little bit too salty. Everything else tasted great. Frites were so good that my friends and I had to pack the leftover home as we didn't want to waste them. <br/><br/>The service was excellent. The restaurant was busy, so we expected to wait for food for a little bit longer. The waiter was very polite, explained what the restaurants had on their special menu, and checked if we needed anything during the meal. <br/><br/>I would definitely love to come back for lunch or dinner. Their prices are reasonable. They also have good service and good food. *LIKE* <br/><br/>

Mediocre food and consistently poor service. Been invited out to eat here a few times and I always regret it. Most of the dishes are so-so versions of familiar French bistro dishes. If you're the type of person who doesn't need good food, but likes to say, "I know this little French place and it's in the middle of nowhere, isn't that fun because it's so DIFFERENT than going somewhere downtown?!" then this is perfect for you. With only a handful of French bistros in Vancouver, it gives you the illusion of going somewhere unique and trendy because it's in a converted hair salon in the middle of Mount Pleasant, but really only has "meh" food and rude, disorganized staff.
Constant Cravings
Les Faux Bourgeois is an unassuming restaurant situated on the corner of Fraser and Kingsway. Since they are only open at night, you might miss it during the day. Started off with some complimentary bread! They gave us a lot given that we only had 2 people. For our appy, we had the Escargots de Bourgogne served with crostini. This is the first time I’ve had escargots not counting the time I had it at my uncle’s house in high school. The escargot was swimming in a rich concoction of garlic and parsley. We could taste a bit of spice in it too. The texture of the escargots was slightly rubbery and toothsome yet still soft. We used the rest of our complimentary bread to soak up the sauce since there wasn’t enough crostini.

Went here for a friend's birthday dinner, she was the one who wanted french food. and so she went here again as she had a pleasant experience :) <br/><br/>overall my impression on ofood is just okay, and nothing really much that i remember specifically. the food was slightly above average i'll say. But at the same time the price is also above average. I would say overall it's a great restaurant. however, there are many other places that I haven't tried in terms of french restaurants. So i won't be able to justify much whether if the food that i was served is really great for french bistro standard in vancouver. <br/><br/>But overall i did find the food tasty on most of the dishes.<br/>would recommend the place to my friend, but personally I'm not going here unless I trully find this place is worth to go :)<br/><br/>2nd update November 2015<br/><br/>went here for last minute dinner, actually more like got last minute invite when i was hungry, so went to the location, place is packed as usual but good thing my froend have a reservation, (reservation recommended) and so starting with the appetizer we ordered 4, the french onion soup, duck liver pate, cheese and meat platter, and will recall the 4th one in a minute... yup can't remember<br/><br/>everything was great but my friend didn't really enjoy her confit, not sure if it's the canard or the poulet right now.<br/><br/>hmmm but everything else i think was good, definitely no complaints about it.
Nia
A very enjoyable second visit. This place is a typical noisy French bistro. The staff is attentive. Quality food at a fair price and I will come back again.
Kyle Woo
I followed up with a previous co-worker who I don’t see very often, maybe once every few months. I let her decide, and she chose Les Faux Bourgeois. The seating is slightly awkward, but it makes sense given they want to maximize the number of seats in the small dining space. Although we had a early dinner reservation, the two options we could have chosen were non-optimal for photos… near the back.

It started off well.<br/>The waiter was charming and knowledgeable. But then it started off with some telling signs, small but important.<br/>The water was not cold, lukewarm was a better description and this on a super hot day.<br/>The bread was stale and chewy - a. Baquettete style bread should have been crusty on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. This was anything but.that.<br/>The one appetizer, black noir, a French classic, was terrific. Bu that was the end of something good and tasty. Everything thereafter was terrible. Not what you would expect from a so-called French bistro that consistently gets good reviews about it it on various social media sites and makes the usual top 10 lists in its category, French food. The only thing that was French about it was that the menu listed the traditional French bistro dishes. That was it. Two salads wee too acidic, the vinegar overpowering everything else, although the goat cheese that was on one of them was beautiful, a nice woodsy smell and taste it. The mussels were overlooked and they did not have that fresh sea-like taste to the.<br/>A duck confit salad tasted like duck that had been overlooked and left for several days and then reheated. And this was a waiter recommended dish. Duck confit should be juicy, most and tender, having been immersed and stored in duck fast for days. This was not. <br/>The waiter of course knew we did not like the dishes, he just cleared them away, even though there was a lot of food left on them. Not a single question - how was it? Our culinary misadventure had come to an inglorious end.<br/><br/>

The restaurant itself is a little cramped and loud, but it's a small restaurant with a large fan base, so who can really blame them? <br/><br/>I had the moules marinières, which was good but nothing special enough to come back for. However, my mom's steak in the steak frites was excellent! Tender and flavorful. Our other guests also thoroughly enjoyed their duck confit and lamb sirloin. <br/><br/>Our server was a very attentive and nice guy! The other staff seemed really rushed and stressed, though. They would kind of disregard us when we asked questions about the food/restaurant.
Eating With Kirby
This little French bistro has always been on my to-eat list and I was so happy to finally taste what all the fuss is about. . I liked Le Faux Bourgeois instantly because their menu was affordable and the quantity of food was great. I find a lot of French restaurants overprice their dishes and I end up leaving hungry and unsatisifed.
Gratinee
As we step into the little bistro with its dim lighting and worn wood floors, we are immediately transported to a Parisian neighborhood circa the Jazz Age.
Brenmoen
Made for a colloquial get together. Nice simply looking Bistro, music not related with the ambiance, food a little over fatty as we can expect in French cuisine, flavours ok, nice presentation, nice portions, poor wines selection by glass. I rather would like the hostes be les informal, and more efficient . Prices are related with the quality of food, could improve the menu make it more authentic French.

So so. April 27, 2015<br/><br/>Took an out-of-town business guest. When I reserved, I found it strange the person on the phone told me twice it was for a 2 hr sitting - first time I've ever been told that for any restaurant I've dined at. Overall disappointed. Old run down building - I don't go to a restaurant for location or what it looks like but some updating would help. As noted by other reviews, service was awful. Food was ok - luckily not overpriced. Nocoise salad with tuna - almost tasted like tuna from a can. Everything was way over seasoned. At the two hour mark, we were handed our cheque. I asked about dessert and the waiter said "so sorry, your two hours is finished and we have other guests waiting".<br/><br/>It has to come off Vancouver's top 20.

"For my entree, I had the lamb cheeks. They were served with apricots and some sort of couscous. I really didn’t even need a knife for the lamb, since the chunks of meat just melted into my fork (and in my mouth). Utterly fantastic."<br/><br/>See comment section for link to the full written review.

AMAZING DINNER. Went for Sunday dinner, had the Escargots for appie and they were the best I have ever had in my life! Also had the Steak Frites!! soooooo good right down to the peppercorn au jus! The frites also outstanding! My son had the Duck Confit and said it was the best he ever had! THANK YOU TO LES FAUX BOURGEOIS for an amazing dinner!<br/><br/>Best,<br/>Deb from Vancouver

Faux is the perfect name for this terrible bistro. I have no idea how this place is still in business. The food is bland at best. I have eaten all over France and in many French bistros throughout North America this is truly the worst. Pate reminded me of cat food & the "tenderloin" was full of gristle. Thank goodness the prices are low because it fits the quality of the food. Alsatian tart with ricotta cheese? Seriously? Do not visit this restaurant if you want anything resembling French bistro fare. Service is fine, venue is old & run down.

Lovely. My partner and I have been here a few times, and have never been disappointed. The convivial ambience and tasteful décor (as in, not too pretentiously posh and trying) aside, the food has always been amazing. A personal favorite is the trout, done in a variety of manner, which has always been incredibly satisfying in its freshness and flavoring, especially its skin, sautéed to perfection. Other dishes we have ordered, the duck, the ox-tail, and cassoulet, were also quite inspired and palatable. An extra bonus for the authentic French waiters.
Looking For A Michelin In Vancouver
Not good.. Two years ago we tried this place and was very good. Last Tuesday we tried it again and was not so great. French soup had no flavour. Steak with frites was okay. Asked for medium, was rare. Beef stew was reasonable but not outstanding. The worst of the night was a pork chop, apparently the special of the day. Probably one of the worst we had. Again no flavour, not tender, overcooked. No one asked how was the food while we're eating. Another server removed our plates and asked. We told about the pork chop. No reply or explanation. Took it to the chef, who we could see from the table tasted the "sauce". Again no explanation. Two years ago the food was very good. We are not going back. There are better options in Vancouver.

Do you have a reservation?. A great meal. Duck confit, and the pate to start. But, here's the thing...we booked a table, they called the night before to confirm, but when we showed up there, NO TABLE. Fortunately, a space came available at the bar, and they gave us a free cocktail (my suggestion). But, I'd definitely go there again. Warm, and cozy, and a great French bartender.

Maincourse never arrived!. On the recommendation of a friend went for dinner tonight. We ordered a salad and steak frites to share . After a considerable wait we noticed the table next to us that had arrived later than we had received their main dish. Which happened to be the same as our order. We spoke to the waiter and advised him that we thought our order had gone to the wrong table. The waiter proceeded to tell us that no that's not what we ordered we had ordered the duck according to him! We explained that no that wasn't the case that we had ordered the steak. when ordering he asked us how we would preferred the steak what sauce we would like - the order was indeed steak. The waiter did not apologize he did not offer to have the steak made quickly for us he just continued to insist that we had ordered the duck. When I asked him where the duck was if that's what I had ordered he had no answer to that. We asked to speak to a manager and he told us he was the manager. We ask for the bill and left no duck no steak so no review for the food. I can review the service and tell you that it was very poor a big disappointment.

Marat idea. Overall-a must go . Certainly brings me back the memories if visiting France. <br/>Pros: house wine is quite decent by taste. Whether 10 per a glass os decent is u 2 decide. <br/>Great atmosphere. <br/>Salade nicoise and escargot is just super<br/>Full house with all the seats at the bar taken-more than a good sign for any joint. <br/>Cons<br/>Boilabesse is soso at the most. I understand the cost concerns, but it is just a Canadian version of it. Not saying oys not tasty, but where are the crustaceans? And just two prawns.<br/>No salt and pepper?!<br/><br/>Overall. I will come back, it os a great place, I would just reword the Boilabesse. <br/>Dont forget yo7 make a reservation. Wr took the la7 spot at the bar.

Great place for any occasion. This has been my families favourite restaurant for many years, and really never fails.<br/>The service is always great and the food is fresh and well prepared. The specials board <br/>is a great touch and is different every time!

Amazing and heavenly food. I cannot go back to this restaurant. The food is just heavenly!

Love this restaurant! Been many times and always enjoy it. The food is consistently good & service is friendly. Sometimes noisy at back of restaurant but can avoid this by sitting at bar which is very cozy. Love it!!

Excellent Excellent Restaurant!!. Just had dinner with my family at LFB to celebrate my granddaughter's Birthday. It was unbelievably delicious food. The place was absolutely packed when we walked in and it was a Tuesday. I can't imagine being able to get a reservation on a weekend without booking it weeks in advance. The service was awesome, the food was truly incredible - every bite was an adventure. There were 7 of us and the entire meal was timed perfectly. The waiting staff was wonderful - loved the additional touch of France with their accents. A most delightful evening.

RUDE!!!. Rude, Snarky, and Poor Customer Service! Just got back to the 'States after having had an otherwise wonderful 1rst-time vacation to Vancouver, B.C. Although the average citizens were quite friendly and pleasant people, the self-proclaimed "Parisian" owner of this little eatery was the only thing about my trip that leaves a rotten taste in my mouth (the underrated, fake version of what he Claims is true French food did not help either). Not only did he rush us with our food by constantly hovering over us, he had the nerve to reach across my teenage daughter to grab her plate (without bothering to ask if she was done, or not)-and had the nerve to get upset when I asked him why he was behaving this way and rushing us out! He had the nerve to tell me to "not eat" my food when I talked to him as though he was my dad, or something-and that" if I did not like his treatment then we should leave". I am glad that other customers heard how nasty he was to me, and they have pledged to not eat at this overrated place again either-and neither will I when I visit Vancouver, B.C. again!!

Love it. It is a very fancy place. It is a bit expensive but I think its worth it. The dishes are freshly prepared. The details around the dish plate could definitely tell me is a real french place. French food is usually expensive, but its a good night to spend with the love one at this place.

The food is not good with price is $$$! Not compatible with the Ambiance. <br/>And the service is cold!<br/>The hostess is stupid!
Jason Dhatt
Great value at this place for high end dining at very reasonable prices. Something you would have downtown but without the premium price. Think about eating food like Chambar at cactus prices

Perfect dining experience. Came here with my boyfriend for our anniversary. We went on a Tuesday and it was busy. We made reservations and had to wait 15 minutes still because that's how popular it is. Our server was timely, friendly and knowledgable. The food was delicious. We shared the mon pleasant charcuterie plate, French onion soup. My bf had the chicken roast and I had the duck confit. Everything was melt in your mouth good and far exceeded my expectations. 5 stars! We left feeling very satisfied and will come back again

Disappointed..... Went to Les Faux Bourgeois for the 4th time. I have to say a few things have changed, except their Menu that still looks more or less the same.<br/>The ambiance used to be "Bistrot", with French music. Seems they are now trying to be more "club/lounge" ambiance.<br/>But main disappointment was with the food. My duck liver parfait had no taste, and it was served with Dijon..... Never seen pâté served with Dijon. <br/>The coq au vin sauce didn't taste like wine.... It had no specific taste. The patatoes in the Choucroute were not cooked enough. <br/>The Tatin was good but Chocolate Mousse was not tasty.<br/>The service? Not one single smile.<br/>I don't think I will go again.

Amazing All Around. I have been meaning to try this restaurant, but they are always booked up. Walked in one day, they said they didn't have any tables, if I didn't have reservations, which was fine, I was happy to be sitting at the bar.<br/><br/>Tried out the Soupe A L'Oignon Grantinee. Delicious, but not very hot, but still very good. I also had the Le Steak Frites, very tender and juicy.<br/><br/>Service was pretty wonderful. Waitress was very attentive. The waiter that came out with the dessert had a very cute french accent and very friendly. Would definately go back.<br/><br/><br/>Would definately go back!

Exaggerated Reviews. Horrible cold service, mediocre food, spend your evening somewhere else! They do not greet you at the door when you walk in, the staff is cold when they take your order, you have to flag them down to get their attention every time, and the restaurant is not even big. One of the servers was just hanging out at the end of the bar. They don't check up on you and the food is not even that good. The food taste was not balanced, mussels were ok, fries were ok, but the duck leg was very salty, and the salad was overdressed. I heard great things about this restaurant but it is overrated. I guess there is nothing much around the neighbourhood and people come here because it is the best they can have.
Sarah J
I'm sorry to say this but bacon has no place in this soup. This item is a pass.

Delicious!. Excellent meal and service - Will be back!

Très Bien!. Surprised my girlfriend and took her to Les Faux Bourgeois for late dinner on a Friday. <br/>First, I would like to say that the service was professional but in a French "laissez-faire" way, not the North American "constantly-interrupting" way that too many restaurants encourage. Our server knew the food very well and was attentive without being intrusive.<br/>The Mt. Pleasant Picnic was lovely, the Steak & Frites could compare to an authentic bistro L'Entrecote (actually the frites were better), and the Crème brûlée was one of the best I have had. <br/>It was an authentic and romantic meal that we won't soon forget.

A chilly waiter turns a special occasion sour. Tonight we visited Les Faux Bougeois for our 25th wedding anniversary. The dinner was a gift from our grown sons who were excited to treat us to the meal. So excited to make the meal special our son called the restaurant 3 times in the week leading up to the meal asking that a bottle of champagne be placed on the table and ensuring the staff knew that this was a very special occasion. We arrived at the restaurant and no champagne and no mention of the occasion. The waiter did not introduce himself, did not talk about the menu but was curt and efficient. The food was fabulous and came out quickly. Would we return to this restaurant? Yes, for the food. The service ruined the evening. Next time it would be nice to have a smile, a bit of warmth and a sense that the staff actually care about the diners experience.
David
Good but not great. Went there on Sunday. The service was "meh". My family all head steak/frites and I had the sole filet with dill cream sauce. Food was underseasoned and the sauce was bland. I asked them to pack leftovers (mine and some frites) and said they could put it together. They wrapped in foil and squished the fries on top. Really? Too cheap to get proper containers? Doubt I'll return. Jules in Gastown is much better.

Sublime.. This is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in Vancouver. <br/><br/>The staff is professional and knowledgeable, the location is charming and cozy, and the food is delicious and fairly priced, with adequate portion sizes.<br/><br/>Be prepared to be transported to France for a modest fee if you visit Les Faux Bourgeois!

Sooooo good. My wife and I are French people, and the food is exactly the same as in France,if unfortunately you don't like the food from this restaurant, you will never like the French food.<br/>a MUST...

Not as good as they say : (. I was so excited to have a table at Les Faux for my B-day. I had heard a lot of good things about this place and my expectations were high. <br/>Unfortunately our experience at Les Faux was far from the expectations. The food was just average. Nothing special about their food, neither in taste or presentation. Service was a bit too relaxed. : ( Don't order the chocolat cake, it is something out of a corky 90's cooking book.
Tim
The food was good but thrown at us. <br/>Unfortunately this spoilt the night for us.

Excellent. We got exactly what we were expecting both in terms of the food, service and setting. thank you

Aucune étincelle. Have you ever been on a date where all seemed well? You were up for it, your date was attractive and interesting, you both enjoyed the time spent and then came a goodnight kiss which inspired ... nothing. Dining here was a bit like that. The food was good, the table was ready, the service above average, the price affordable and the drinks notable but eating here brought me no joy. I sampled all of my companions fare -- the tenderloin was best, the trout excellent and even though my flank steak was the dullest, it was still an acceptable choice. I have to thumbs up the place because there was no reason not to do so and yet it is certain I won't return, having been given no real spark of enticement.
Psychologymom
Mixed feeling about this. The service! Or the lack of, is the biggest problem there. We had a tall French server who showed us a smile only once, when he brought us the bill. Being a positive well mannered diner, I've never had an aweful experience at any restaurant, I was surprised to be served with aloof and somewhat arrogant attitude. The food is ok, but not exceptional. It didn't blow me away. I had a trout for main and sweetbread for appy. Beurre Blanc was too acid and unbalanced, which kills the delicate flavour of the trout. The sweetbread was overcooked and the sauce wasn't good match either. The verdict? I'll go elsewhere for decent French meals.

Great way to catch up with a friend. When visiting a foreign city it's always a great chance to take an old friend out to dinner and pick a restaurant that is a personal favorite of that friend.<br/><br/>An a non Vancouver person LFB is in a funnily looking spot for a restaurant of its standard but don't let that put you off (locals probably wouldn't even notice).<br/><br/>It's busy, very busy and consequently a bit on the noisy side but not uncomfortably so. I had made a booking a couple of days in advance - which was an excellent idea as even for a Tuesday night the place was packed.<br/><br/>Starters were some Asparagus and a beet (beetroot) salad followed by the <br/>Beef Tenderlion and Duck for mains and some cheese for 'desert'.<br/><br/>Food was excellent, the service fast but friendly, helpful and everything you could ask for. Being a later booking (7:30) there was no pressure for us to vacate our table but my friend tells me that earlier bookings are limited for lingering after dining! <br/><br/>A great night out and by my standard a mid priced restaurant - about $70 per head plus tip - Aussies reading this please remember to tip. <br/><br/>Enjoy
Sarah
This little gem is always packed with people eager to get a seat! My friend and I both agreed it was worth the wait. Great food, pleasent service and a cool and trendy atmosphere! We will be back.

My bridesmaids took me here to round out our girl's day before my wedding! <br/>I honestly can't wait to go back. The appies, to the drinks to the main and finally the desserts were all magnifique!!!! Our waiter was VERY pleasant! Seriously, every bite you want it to last because it is just sooooo good! We had escargot and duck and creams brûlée and a bunch of other things. I honestly don't think there is a single bad item on their menu!!<br/>Take me again please!!!!

Another lovely evening at the lively and lovely Faux Bourgeois. It's 'almost' like being in Paris! Book well in advance, or grab a spot at the bar. Steak frites and coq au vin always excellent.
Krista
Great evening out. Our party thoroughly enjoyed all of the food at Les Faux Bourgeois. Our server was friendly, and there when appropriate. I had the confit duck salad and it was tender and tasty!

Wanted to like it. I have traveled all over France over decades, thumb, bus, car, train and Motorcycle, eaten at more French restaurants in France than most. The rude French person is a myth, they just have a low tolerance for stupidity. This place is a poor interpretation of a French myth. <br/>Rude ill informed waitstaff, harried and short tempered hostesses, overly reduced sauce, greasy vegetables and imbalanced portions. I will give it another shot. I really like the Salade de Fruits Cafe in the French Cultural Centre, more like real French.
CilantroTam
Quaint bistro! Good service with bar staff because of reservation mix up. Seared scallop with diced squash in a light cream sauce was delicious! Mussels, steaks & frites and duck confit were nicely done. I will be back to try the duck confit myself. Apparently you get a maraschino cherries with<br/>French 75-Parisian style - awesome French speaking staff!
Calliope
Surprised. By all the negative comments here! my pals all have a great time when they go, and so did I when i finally made it just after xmas. xcellent service too. we sat on the "other" side, but our waiter had the perfect 6th sense of when to be there and when not. loved our dishes and it was charming all round. although we tried 3 reds and none were memorable. can't wait to go back. and try the whites : )

Really bad experience. Last week on my son's 17th birthday we went to Les Faux B. for a celebration meal. Very disappointing. Bad service by a surly server. Really poorly presented food. Brown lumps of "coq au vin", dead overcooked salad with soggy duck confit, undercooked mussels with a tasteless cream sauce, really ordinary out of the bag tasting like french fries. Scallops in cream sauce was okay but the vegetables with it were really tired. The only other thing that was good was the wine. Waiter complained that we didn't order dessert saying: "But that's the best part!" Way over priced and badly badly done. Do not go. Can not recommend. Avoid.
Eve
The food is not worth the terrible service and treatment received from the manager of the restaurant. We were told our reservations would be 30 minutes late. What is the point of making a reservation a month in advance if they do not keep to our reservation. We asked for the cake cutting fee to be waived onsidering we waited 30 minutes outside jn the rain. Instead of apologizing the manager told us its "not their style". ????!!!!! What manager in their right mind who cares about customer service says that?!?!? We offered a kind solution to smoothing over the already soured experience of waiting 30 minutes in cold and were pretty much told that the manager did care for our service...all over $30 worth of cake cutting fees for a cake. Hrmmm...priorities and big picture is not their style either.

Worst waiter ever!!. Avoid this place. we had the most rude waiter ever! Service was not only bad but will not even get into his behaviour and what he said to us! this place needs a service overhaul top to bottom. Mgmt to front end servers. What a waste as the food is good but the customer service and the people you employ need to be addressed. Owners, read the reviews and deal with this issue!
FoodinYVR
Good dessert. Bland escargot even though covered by butter and my tenderloin was overcooked. I only enjoyed the creme brulee. I guess nothing much can get wrong the the dessert. I tried a bit of my friend's passion fruit tart. It was great too. The texture was different from what you would get outside. Jelly texture. Service was bad. We need to ask our server a few times for water and the bill.

Food was 3.8 out of 5 Unwel.... Food was 3.8 out of 5<br/>Unwelcoming and pretentious server brings otherwise flawless service to a 3 out of 5.<br/>A great experience. Totally worth it. I take the rudeness as long as it was tasty and prompt.<br/>I will go back.
Lovetodineout
Lives up to the hype. Here with six people (two families with children) and the evening was enjoyed by all. Lucky we have kids with a varied palate but even if we did not, it would have been suitable all the same. Service was genuinely good and food did not disappoint.
Zak Taylor
Nice. Food was good, service was attentive and easy going. They were busy but they managed to accomodate us at a table for 4. The usual French bistro fare was on the menu. I had the Steak Frites which were done nicely and my friends also enjoyed their meals.<br/><br/>While it was a solid meal and experience, it wasn't the "earth-shattering" experience you'd expect with all the hype...

Meh. This restaurant makes me appreciate Brasserie L'école so much more. Someone should take the cook that makes the frites to Brasserie L'école for a lesson because french fries and frites shouldn't taste the same. This restaurant seemed a bit pretentious to me (some of the servers can't be deemed to look at you). While I enjoyed the unpretentious Mexican food across the street and the Vietnamese food on Broadway a lot more, I think that this restaurant is good addition to the restaurants in this area, and I'm gladdened to see that this area is becoming a good foodie area.

Thank you reviewers who gave advice on the service. You guys saved us a trip to this place, I don't believe it paying for abuse or poor service, French or not. This place used to be on my wish list, just crossed it off.
Brownie
Even with a reservation, you will wait for your table, but it's worth it. Excellent food. Not quiet, it's French ;-)
Rudy
Went to the door to ask if there was room for 3 to dine. Hostess says no. Seeing 4 empty seats at the bar I asked could we sit at the bar or are those reserved? Hostess replies they are not together. I ask if we could move one seat so 3 of us could be together. Hostess looks us up and down and says we don't disturb people when they are eating. <br/>Seems like we were discriminated against or the hostess was having a power trip.... This establishment on the kingsway is run down and did not appear so fancy as this cow seemed to think! On principle please don't patronize this uptight bitchy place!!
Mindofafatty
Not the best. I had the duck and i have to say i've had better. dessert gosh I don't even remember that's how unmemorable the whole experience was. I don't understand the hype honestly and I don't understand the rating either.

Came here with a group of friends for 2 birthdays, will definitely return for a 3rd visit and will refer others. As a few other reviewers mentioned, the service is the only thing that is not top notch but it's ok, it hasn't deterred us from going just yet. Decent portions, great price for French cuisine and the selection is great. Everything comes out looking and tasting delish! Already excited to bring more friends and family to try out Les Faux Bourgeois.

Really effin good!. Im a regular guy that doesn't mind paying a little more for fantastic food and service.<br/><br/>Living not far away I often forget that I don't have to go far for good rich french cuisine for no more than a burger and beer at most pubs. The staff here really knows what they are doing and in my opinion, could charge much more for the same food in a better location. <br/><br/>I'll be back!

Comme ci comme ca. After hearing all the fab reviews of this hole in the wall, i decided to check it out for myself to see if, in fact, all the rave reviews are warranted. i wasn't too crazy about the hole in the wall seating...considering its a french establishment, i was expecting more posh digs. but i guess the lack of decor allows them to charge lower prices for their french fare. after ordering the filet de boeuf as the entree, it didn't wow me as i've had better steak elsewhere. their ahi tuna salad was pretty good tho. all in all, so far i'd say its meh...nothing to rave about. so if i do return to les faux, i'll try out their other menu items to see how they turn out.

Dinner great but don't expect conversation. We ate there sat night. food was very good. we made our reservations 2 weeks in advance but they still had to tell us twice we could have the table for two hours max. and then would have to leave. <br/>the service was so so and our server was competent but lost interest in us when we ordered a glass of wine each but not a bottle. <br/>it was very noisy, crowded and hard to talk. the place seems to cater to a younger crowd who don't mind talking loudly over the din and like to drink quite a bit. <br/>the "older folks", by this i mean over 40, were sitting mostly quiet with some still trying to have a conversation- were probably wondering what we were wondering-if this is such a great place, why aren't we having a good time? <br/>we decided to forgo the $4.50 latte's and escape to our fav coffee bar where the latte's are $3.25 and much quieter. anyways we might have dawdled over the coffee's and gone over our time limit-then what would have happened? <br/>i know people rave about this place but we won't be back.

Excellent choice! Pate was favorable but prefer texture to be finer than it was but still very tasty. The escargot was done nicely, favor just right. The lamb stew was very good with perfect mix of mash potatoes and veggies the meat melts in your mouth. My favorite was the beef tenderloin it was a perfect medium rare so juicy and tender and went perfectly with the red wine shallot sauce. The creme brulee was not a dissapointment so delicous. The service was very good and reasonably priced dishes. Overall, 5 stars in my opinion. Can't wait to o again love the food!

Great bistro food. I came here with my girlfriend and we both liked the food. The restaurant is tucked away off of Kingsway in an odd little wedge of a block. Restaurant was packed when we came. Tight quarters with a bar and tables. Nice ambience. Would come again.

My friend and I dined here for my birthday a few nights ago... We were a little lard for our reservation, however we did call ahead to inform the restaurant. Has anyone ever spoken to the hostess, Julie (I believe her name is?). What a piece of work she is... We figure she is the owners wife/ girlfriend/something of value! Who is she? Please let me know so I can understand why she is the why she is.... Her attitude ruined our whole experience at the restaurant! I will not dine there again! I will not recommend the restaurant to anyone! It was my birthday dinner and all I can remember is her attitude!

Reservations?!? Not a good start- we had a bad experience & haven't even eaten there yet! Made reservations for 7:30 on a recent Friday night. We were almost there when they phoned at 7:10 to say that some people had walked in & they were giving them our table. Huh?!? For a 7:30 reservation they cancel us 20 min before? We were 2 blocks away. Do they actually take reservations ? or we're they just saying we can "probably" seat you @ 7:30 - unless someone beats you there ? Not impressed. Will have to wait a while to see if we feel like giving it another try. Hmmm.

Good stuff. I had the beef tenderloin grille. It melted in my mouth and was grilled to perfection. I found the potatoes gratin were a little too far on the cheesy side but good nonetheless. I wasn't drinking that night but I had a virgin caesar and it was much better than many restaurants around town. <br/><br/>Good atmosphere but not to be confused with fine dining. Just good time ambience.
