The original Chen's had to leave their old space on Park Road because the block was being demolished. The new restaurant is now called Baiyulan Shanghai Cuisine and it serves the same dishes but in a more refined space. Prices are nearly the same. We ate there June 20 during the soft-opening and everything was just as good as before.
Best xlb in town. Went to the place before they closed at the current location l. They are moving to a new place near Lansdowne. Will definitely visit their new store.
As with most of the food here, the XLBs were good but don’t really stand out too much from the pack. The pork filling was meaty and there were plenty of soup packed inside. The skin was the right consistency, strong enough to hold up to my inferior chopstick skills but delicate enough it required a minimal chew.
I had great service! I don't speak Chinese and he waitress was super helpful and very nice to me.. ground pork and green beans, were amazing!! Xlb was solid. Shangai noodles were good. Spicy wontons lots of flavour and the pan fried pork buns were my favourite item. Great prices too. Big fan of this type of Chinese cooking style. Will definitely be going back. Chow
went here for dinner with a huge group of foodie friends, and the good thing is that we're all familiar with asian cuisine, and the best thing is none of us are picky about the food, we can go with any food that seems super interesting, and seems good/sounds new to us.
ordered a bunch of items, since we have around 15 people.
there are a lot of dishes but the memorable ones for me are the xiao long bao, very very juicy and the flavour of the juice is very good.
and spicy tea tree mushroom, although this one is salty and spicy but I like the aroma and the overpowered spices that goes well with mushroom and a bowl of rice that i have in my hand.
the deep fried chicken is crisp on the skin and very moist on the meat, flavourful as well on the skin itself
overall most of the food are definitely okay to good i think if you're heading with a huge group, it's definitely okay to go here.
We ended up here because the wait at the congee restaurant a few doors down did not fit into our schedule. But what a pleasant surprise! Lots of tables and instant service. The XLB were the best I've ever had; thinnish wrapper, tasty pork filling without being too salty or greasy (common problem), hot broth, good price $5.95 for 6.
The northern style wonton (no shrimp) just lean pork and veg had the perfect amount of filling to wrapper ratio. Cantonese service friendly and quick. Cash only. Parking to be desired during crunch times, but worth repeat business!
Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen in Richmond has been around for a long time. They used to be in a tiny shop across from Richmond Centre. Now they are located at 8095 Park Road. It is next to Tai Hing Congee House. There are plenty of free parking but it can be competitive. I’m glad to see this place finally got a fresh coat of paint.
We were headed to Golden Paramount Seafood Restaurant but found out they closed on Tuesdays, so Chen's Shanghai Kitchen it was.
I've been to Shanghai China once and I noticed everything is so oily and dishes sit in oil, I asked my Shanghai friend if this is normal and he said yes. Shanghai restaurants in Vancouver are a little better, not so much oil sitting in dishes but still very oily. Once in a while, I crave Shanghai noodles. I been to a few places but is it normal for very little pork? While I was in Shanghai, I never got Shanghai noodles LOL, but I would presume that meat in china is expensive so little meat makes sense but in Vancouver, it isn't as bad as China. I haven't had pan-fried pork buns in a long time but the pan-fried pork buns were out of this world! Best pork buns I've ever had, that doesn't say much as I've never eaten that many. The shanghai noodles was a little strange with all the noodles all broken, there weren't any long ones, maybe a couple. The workers seemed to be just chatting and not really serving.
They make their juicy pork buns fresh in house! While dining you can see the staff busy making their juicy buns. The juicy buns have a very thin skin, full of juices, and the tender pork. I usually also order the pan fried juicy buns since I miss the one from Shanghai, I couldn't stop eating it over there! Their pan fried juicy buns are also full of liquid so be sure to eat with caution! My boyfriend burnt his lips. The shanghai noodles were alright, the noodles were all chopped up with only 3 or 4 pieces that were long. The service was lacking a bit, we had to go up several times to get things done.
I went for dinner here with a good friend of mine recently on his personal recommendation. That, and I had a mean craving for dumplings that day. The decor (and service) of the place was pretty standard stuff and nothing to write home about; that tends to be the case with most Asian restaurants I find. The food is the main attraction. That being said, the food itself was all delicious, arrived quickly, and in very big portions! I took a sizable amount of leftovers home since the two of us just couldn't finish everything in one sitting. We ordered dumplings (of course) and 2 entrees and our total bill came to around $35 with gratuity. Bottom line: delicious food, generous portions and great value overall coupled with so-so service and ambiance.
Took my family here for a late afternoon lunch. The food quality was good. Xialoong boa had lots of soup, very good. Their drunken chicken was okay, but I had better. Overall, I would recommend to give them a try. They do have big menu and we only tried 3 items as it was a light lunch.
Ordered near Lunar New years and received above and beyond service.
We ordered the dandan noodles and the rice cake with shepherds purse and shredded pork. They included two tea drinks and a box of goodies with a coupon for free! It was a great surprise.
The rice cake dish was good but I wish there were more of the veggies on it. The veggies bring flavor and with not much of it, then it just tastes like regular rice cakes.
The dandan noodles were a huge portion. Good nutty flavor but I prefer a little more spicy.
Had to stop here after being away for meetings, craving for some food ‘ol Shanghai Chinese food. Couldn’t finish our portions so took them home. Tasty as ever. Prices have gone up but that’s true of everywhere was anyway. Cravings satisfied. Service was not consistent today though. Hence 4 of 5 stars.
We come to Baiyulan for 4 dishes every single time, and for these it is worth the drive! Be sure to try their whole crab 🦀 with salted egg rice cakes (not on regular menu, it’s on their chef’s recommendation on banner outside their front entrance - $53 for about 2lbs 💯 best deal in town). Their turnip cake is also one of the best we’ve had. Their peikin duck (2 wraps option) is hella good and such a good deal! Then there’s their salt and pepper fried squid 🦑 beats most Taiwanese eats around! 😮🤭
Their clam soup is pretty legit too. Definite will remain a regular here🔥🔥👌
Baiyulan is a small colourful restaurant offering Shanghai styled food. It’s one of the great places in Richmond to taste an ethnic food. Price is reasonable. Atmosphere is warm, especially when outside is windy, drizzling and leaves are falling in a chilly autumn.
