Review Baiyulan Shanghai Cuisine - Richmond

Took my family here for a late afternoon lunch. The food quality was good. Xialoong boa had lots of soup, very good. Their drunken chicken was okay, but I had better. Overall, I would recommend to give them a try. They do have big menu and we only tried 3 items as it was a light lunch.

Ordered near Lunar New years and received above and beyond service. We ordered the dandan noodles and the rice cake with shepherds purse and shredded pork. They included two tea drinks and a box of goodies with a coupon for free! It was a great surprise. The rice cake dish was good but I wish there were more of the veggies on it. The veggies bring flavor and with not much of it, then it just tastes like regular rice cakes. The dandan noodles were a huge portion. Good nutty flavor but I prefer a little more spicy.

Had to stop here after being away for meetings, craving for some food ‘ol Shanghai Chinese food. Couldn’t finish our portions so took them home. Tasty as ever. Prices have gone up but that’s true of everywhere was anyway. Cravings satisfied. Service was not consistent today though. Hence 4 of 5 stars.

After eating out at restaurant much less due to Covid-19, my family decided to give this restaurant a try. However, we regret coming here. The pineapple and chicken fried rice is oily and has only 3 pieces of pineapple. With pineapple in the name of the dish, this is very disappointing. After eating a bit of the unappetizing dish, I felt sick to my stomach. Although the shaolongbao/ steam dumplings had a thick skin, what I ate next made myself and family never want to come back again. The noodles with pork was the worst. The pork was too salty and the noodles were mediocre. Spend your money elsewhere. Don't make the same mistake. Not worth your time and money.

We come to Baiyulan for 4 dishes every single time, and for these it is worth the drive! Be sure to try their whole crab 🦀 with salted egg rice cakes (not on regular menu, it’s on their chef’s recommendation on banner outside their front entrance - $53 for about 2lbs 💯 best deal in town). Their turnip cake is also one of the best we’ve had. Their peikin duck (2 wraps option) is hella good and such a good deal! Then there’s their salt and pepper fried squid 🦑 beats most Taiwanese eats around! 😮🤭 Their clam soup is pretty legit too. Definite will remain a regular here🔥🔥👌

The quality and service has declined. The group dinner I had here 2 years ago was much more enjoyable. The roasted tea meat was on the dry side and the pan fried buns were quite doughy. Only thing that was ok was the noodles and wonton.

Baiyulan is a small colourful restaurant offering Shanghai styled food. It’s one of the great places in Richmond to taste an ethnic food. Price is reasonable. Atmosphere is warm, especially when outside is windy, drizzling and leaves are falling in a chilly autumn.

I wanted some Shanghainese breakfast on our way to Vancouver and this place is open earlier than other Shanghainese restaurants. We were the first ones here and waited around 25 min for food. The waitress was friendly but didn’t check on us or anything during the meal. The salted soy milk was bland and had very little topping on it. The onion pancake was also bland and not very flaky. The soupy dumplings (小笼包) was just ok. The best item was pan-fried bao (生煎包). The weirdest item was the sweet rice roll which normally comes with pickles veggies and curlers inside but this one comes with over sugared rice and sugared curlers which was not bad necessarily but very unusual.

The original Chen's had to leave their old space on Park Road because the block was being demolished. The new restaurant is now called Baiyulan Shanghai Cuisine and it serves the same dishes but in a more refined space. Prices are nearly the same. We ate there June 20 during the soft-opening and everything was just as good as before.

Best xlb in town. Went to the place before they closed at the current location l. They are moving to a new place near Lansdowne. Will definitely visit their new store.

As with most of the food here, the XLBs were good but don’t really stand out too much from the pack. The pork filling was meaty and there were plenty of soup packed inside. The skin was the right consistency, strong enough to hold up to my inferior chopstick skills but delicate enough it required a minimal chew.

Okay, I’ve heard of some good things about the XLB at Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen in Richmond… which is pretty much the only reason why I bothered to visit this place. The problem with listening to online reviews is that you can’t always believe what you read. We visited back in the beginning of April and the Grand Canyon-sized pot holes in the cramped parking lot should have been our first clue that we were in for a bad meal. When we walked inside the near empty restaurant, we should have taken that as our second clue. Any good restaurant should have been packed at this hour.
Stanley Quan
I had great service! I don't speak Chinese and he waitress was super helpful and very nice to me.. ground pork and green beans, were amazing!! Xlb was solid. Shangai noodles were good. Spicy wontons lots of flavour and the pan fried pork buns were my favourite item. Great prices too. Big fan of this type of Chinese cooking style. Will definitely be going back. Chow

went here for dinner with a huge group of foodie friends, and the good thing is that we're all familiar with asian cuisine, and the best thing is none of us are picky about the food, we can go with any food that seems super interesting, and seems good/sounds new to us.

ordered a bunch of items, since we have around 15 people.

there are a lot of dishes but the memorable ones for me are the xiao long bao, very very juicy and the flavour of the juice is very good.

and spicy tea tree mushroom, although this one is salty and spicy but I like the aroma and the overpowered spices that goes well with mushroom and a bowl of rice that i have in my hand.

the deep fried chicken is crisp on the skin and very moist on the meat, flavourful as well on the skin itself

overall most of the food are definitely okay to good i think if you're heading with a huge group, it's definitely okay to go here.

We ended up here because the wait at the congee restaurant a few doors down did not fit into our schedule. But what a pleasant surprise! Lots of tables and instant service. The XLB were the best I've ever had; thinnish wrapper, tasty pork filling without being too salty or greasy (common problem), hot broth, good price $5.95 for 6.
The northern style wonton (no shrimp) just lean pork and veg had the perfect amount of filling to wrapper ratio. Cantonese service friendly and quick. Cash only. Parking to be desired during crunch times, but worth repeat business!

Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant has been around for quite some time now. My last visit was back in 2013 with a few foodie friends to chow down on their XLBs. This time, I’ve returned with the ChineseBites crew to try out a lot more items off their menu. The restaurant decor isn’t fancy, but people just come here for the Shanghainese food. There are lots of large round tables for large groups.

Chen's Shanghai Restaurant has been around for quite some time now. My last visit was back in 2013 with a few foodie friends to chow down on their XLBs.

Some dishes were hits and some were misses. You definitely need to know what their specialties are before coming to dine here. The XLBs, Beijing Style Pork Slices with Wraps, Salty Soy Milk, and Deep Fried Man Tou.

Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen in Richmond has been around for a long time. They used to be in a tiny shop across from Richmond Centre. Now they are located at 8095 Park Road. It is next to Tai Hing Congee House. There are plenty of free parking but it can be competitive. I’m glad to see this place finally got a fresh coat of paint.

We were headed to Golden Paramount Seafood Restaurant but found out they closed on Tuesdays, so Chen's Shanghai Kitchen it was.

I've been to Shanghai China once and I noticed everything is so oily and dishes sit in oil, I asked my Shanghai friend if this is normal and he said yes. Shanghai restaurants in Vancouver are a little better, not so much oil sitting in dishes but still very oily. Once in a while, I crave Shanghai noodles. I been to a few places but is it normal for very little pork? While I was in Shanghai, I never got Shanghai noodles LOL, but I would presume that meat in china is expensive so little meat makes sense but in Vancouver, it isn't as bad as China. I haven't had pan-fried pork buns in a long time but the pan-fried pork buns were out of this world! Best pork buns I've ever had, that doesn't say much as I've never eaten that many. The shanghai noodles was a little strange with all the noodles all broken, there weren't any long ones, maybe a couple. The workers seemed to be just chatting and not really serving.
Anita Young
They make their juicy pork buns fresh in house! While dining you can see the staff busy making their juicy buns. The juicy buns have a very thin skin, full of juices, and the tender pork. I usually also order the pan fried juicy buns since I miss the one from Shanghai, I couldn't stop eating it over there! Their pan fried juicy buns are also full of liquid so be sure to eat with caution! My boyfriend burnt his lips. The shanghai noodles were alright, the noodles were all chopped up with only 3 or 4 pieces that were long. The service was lacking a bit, we had to go up several times to get things done.

I went for dinner here with a good friend of mine recently on his personal recommendation. That, and I had a mean craving for dumplings that day. The decor (and service) of the place was pretty standard stuff and nothing to write home about; that tends to be the case with most Asian restaurants I find. The food is the main attraction. That being said, the food itself was all delicious, arrived quickly, and in very big portions! I took a sizable amount of leftovers home since the two of us just couldn't finish everything in one sitting. We ordered dumplings (of course) and 2 entrees and our total bill came to around $35 with gratuity. Bottom line: delicious food, generous portions and great value overall coupled with so-so service and ambiance.
Constant Cravings
Chen’s Shanghai Kitchen is located in a plaza on Park Road just across from Richmond Centre. It’s hard to find parking in the parking lot during peak hours though since there are a few restaurants that share the parking lot. I’ve heard a lot about their XLB’s so that was a must order item. Thankfully they lived up to the hype with a nice thin skin, smooth pork and lots of juice inside! I’m generally not too picky about XLB anyway. They’re almost always good.

Used to come here and loved the food, but now its so salty that it's unbearable. Ordered multiple dishes including the Shanghai vegetable stir fry, xiao long bao, green onion pancake etc.. And was very displeased with all of them...
Nancy Z
As a Shanghainese person, everything is overly sweet and not authentic. I am utterly disappointed at the food and I do not understand why the rating is so high.

XLBs stands for Xio Long Bao, which translates into small steaming basket buns, and yes, that's how they are served.

Fried Dough Puffs With Red Bean Filling. Fried spongy airy marshmallow filled with red bean paste with sprinkled sugar. Has a weird texture, like fluffy egg whites/meringue inside. I liked it.
Ngkahjun1213
Bad food bad service. Sat us down on a dirty table that has two used tea cup. Ordered one bowl of noodle, a vege dish and a prawn dish, vege came out in no time, took another 15 minutes for the noodle to come up. Then another 20 minutes for the prawn.
PickyKasumi
Everything too salty. Went there for lunch on Thursday. We had extremely salty fried noodles with mixed meat, tasteless and nothing in salty soy milk, Salty chives dumpling, steamed dumplings.

Shanghai Style Mixed Veggies. Fresh and delicious!

Good restaurant. Nice xiao long bao and house special spicy crab with rice cake

Totally old school Chinese restaurant, down to the boiled tea and grimy washrooms. Ordered most of the dumplings on the menu (xiao long bao, called "Shanghai soup dumplings" there, vegetable, also the pan fried). Considering the high rankings I was expecting the food to be tastier. I found the dumplings quite bland. Might be a good sign that they don't use MSG?

Prices high portions small lunchtime very tasty. Very Chinese little English. Soup bowls seem to be a good value.

My wife and I went there for lunch November 2013 prices were high portions small we had sweet-and-sour pork small portions for eight dollars very tasty, And a beef and onion dish with watery sauce small portion eight dollars. My wife and I were quite hungry after finishing.

Wow. I came here for lunch last week with coworkers and was blown away by how good their dumplings are. We tried the XLB, a pan fried dumpling, wontons in noodle. It's all good. Wrappers are thin. Expect piping hot soup in the dumplings that don't normally have them, so be careful not to scald your mouth. The Shanghai pan fried noodles are among the best I've tasted. Great vermicelli noodle stir fry. I eat Chinese a lot, so that's saying something. Great value in a city with many good Chinese restaurants. Perfect for group sharing. Bathrooms are a bit dirty, but I come for the food.

Shanghai restaurant has ran out of soup bun! Epic failed!!!!

Wholesome food, good service. My go-to Chinese place in Richmond!

Came here through a recommendation by a friend. Very pleased with the food quality, and the prices are great. My favorite menu item is the 'tea smoked chicken' which is moist on the inside, with crispy (and not fatty) skin on the outside. The soups I have tried were very wholesome and a nice change from the fast food everywhere..

Waitresses and management seem nice, and food comes out pretty quickly. Big servings, and I often bring home food for later

Last night me and my boyfriend went to chen's shanghai for the excellent xiaolongbao, it never disappoints us. We also ordered beef roll, pan fried rice cake, crabmeat tofu and assorted dried fruit in sticky rice. Crab meat tofu is a new dish there which was surprisingly good!! My boyfriend was ok with it cuz he doesnt eat seafood. But I highly recommend this dish. Also, it is worth to mention that the sweet sticky rice was the best ever. It was stuffed with read bean filling and dried fruits, topped with sweet sauce, but it wasn't too sweet at all. We will definitely come back and try the other dishes.

Really delicious food....must try their dim sum.....!
Liyangchen123
Awesome Shanghai food. Food is cheap but still tasty. Recommend their Shanghai steamed buns, and just the dim sum selection can't go wrong. One of my favs in Richmond.

Went here because Tai Hing next door was closed and were really happily surprised. Good cheap delicious food. The steamed veg dumplings were best we'd ever had.

I don't really like the taste~
Katie
Questionable shanghai food. Food mediocre, no service, price high

Can't go wrong with Chen's. Their shanghainese steamed buns are the juiciest and freshest. Their Dan Dan noodle is superior. Service is alright depends on which days you go.

Best causual Chinese 2010...?. This is the second time I've been to a place that Vancouver Magazine rates as Gold in a particular category and really wondered why it was rated as gold. Most of the reviews here was positive so maybe I'm still not ordering the right things?

I've been to this place twice and the first time I got their Shanghai pork dumplings and Shanghai style noodles. The dumplings were good but not necessarily AMAZING. Better than some of the ones I've had before but not others. The noodles were a total flop!! Actually I don't think I've ever tasted something so bland! and it looked very dark too so you think it would be really salty. Even my cousin-in-law who works mostly in China said it was not great.

Then I went back again yesterday with my dad, giving it another go. This time we ordered Shanghai pan-fried dumplings and Green onion pancakes in addition to the pork dumplings. Both of those were not great. The pan-fried dumplings had a lot of dough...which is different from other pan-fried dumplings I've had. And I've never had deep-fried green onion pancakes! Only pan-fried ones. I actually got a stomach ache close to the end of that meal and was like...I'm never coming back again. Everything was just greasy.

Real Shanghai food..... Real old style Shanghai food, must try

AWESOME!. The food is so good. I like their appetizers and dim sum a lot. They are always one of my favourite restaurants.

Amazing. Chen's has the best soup dumplings in BC. They are comparable to the best I found in NYC.

0 By Marc Smith on 16 March, 2015 Where to Eat/Drink Share This Post On a recent shopping trip to the Richmond Ikea I was getting hungry and instead of eating a $1 hot dog or a serving of Swedish meatballs I was craving some Dim Sum, especially Xia Long Bao (XLB). Now the big question is what’s close by, is good and cheap and is a place I’ve not been to before. Thanks to my friend Sherman Chan I found the answer at Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant . A little hole in the wall place in a strip mall on Park Road serving up some pretty good Shanghainese from what I hear. It’s a bit of a drive from Ikea but if the XLB is as good as I’ve heard then it’s worth it. Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant in Richmond

shanghainese food in richmond is on every street corner and honestly, theyre all pretty dang good. trying to try every single one, my mom and i went to chen's shanghai kitchen near richmond center. the parking here is horrendous BUT the food is awesome. good prices and delicious food without being too oily and tastes homemade in the best way... xiao long bao ($4.50): juicy steamed pork buns - these were AMAZING. the skin: not so thin that it would pop but also not thick in a way that it gets in the way of enjoying the little dumpling. the juice: PERFECT. steaming hot and tasty without being too salty and its filled to the brim with it. the meat: VERY GOOD, good flavour, not too fat. everything i look for in a xlb is right here. 5/5 black vinegar spare ribs ($~13): deep fried and then tossed in a very very tasty sauce, this dish was quite good! there were a long of bone parts but thats what spare ribs are so i cant complain. it was very tasty and did not feel too heavy since there was

It ain’t no party like a shanghai party unless you order shanghai dumplings!!
MISS VANCOUVER PIGGY
The XLBs are very juicy as well as tasty! The skin is thin and the meat is very tender. I did lose 3 of these because they got stuck together and even though the juice came out, the meat itself is still juicy. I consider the XLBs to be one of the best, it is not just juicy and tasty, but it is really tasty

I had read about Chen’s on Urbanspoon. I had never heard of it before but apparently, it’s supposed to be right up there with Shanghai River (see my blog here ) and Shanghai Wonderful (personally, I don’t think it’s that great) for the best Shanghainese food in Richmond. I had an hour or so to kill before work so I talked my mom into trying out this restaurant. Turns out, she’s been here before- years ago when it used to be on No. 3. That must have been almost a decade ago! Chen’s is now on Park at Buswell, in the same strip mall as Happy Date. It’s the epitome of a hole in the wall. Talk about ug-ly. The brick wall is outdated and the photos pasted over the windows have faded from years of sunlight. Upon entering the restaurant, I realized I am about to dine in a dive. That’s basically what Chen’s is. My mom asked if I thought we should leave. I decided that we should give it a chance! We hadn’t even ordered any food yet and we were already passing judgment.

Service here was in line with what I expect from chinese restaurants. i.e. Efficient, but not especially friendly or warm. The atmosphere is, well clean and presentable, but nothing that will dazzle or impress. Functional, with a little attention to the aesthetic.
Cameras And Cuisines
Finishing off our meals, we ordered the deep fried buns with condensed milk. I never had these delights before that dinner but I was left with a pretty good impression. The downside to this is now when ever I order these anywhere else, I expect them to be of Chen’s level. Delicious.
Two Hungry Piglets
Warning: eat these with caution! There's so much tasty hot liquid in the dumplings that when I took a bite, the table, my jacket and my hand got a nice shower of dumpling juice. I'm not irritated that it's on my hand and jacket but that I wasted that delicious broth. I think there's something wrong with me. Anyhoooo... these things are the best xlb that I've ever had. Everyone, a hand of applause for Papa Panda and his excellent recommendation!

Balyulan Steamed Pork Buns - Dim sum style pork buns but the pork is floating in a soup, inside the bun. Be careful when you bite into them, hot soup will pour in your mouth. I have tried them once before in San Francisco but never saw them here, until Chen's. Highly recommended.
Eating With Kirby
It has a sketchy looking exterior but they offer the best xiao long baos aka Shanghai soup buns I've ever had. Tip: its best to come with at least one Asian person because the waitress' English skills are limited.

I just had to get a round of the xiao long bao . Six of these plump, juicy bad boys came in a damp bamboo steamer. I'm kind of getting hungry just thinking about these! They were certainly prepared very well: each bao had an explosion of soup waiting inside, along with a very tasty filling. Even TamTam couldn't resist the urge to have 1 (or 3) himself. Hands off of mah buns, you know what I'm sayin'? My one complaint would be that the skin is a little thick, but this w

. Overall, I thought the prices were on the cheap side for Shanghai restaurants in Richmond. And the quality wasn’t bad. It was just a little out of the way. The ambiance could use some work. And service was good. So if you’re looking for an alternative to Shanghai food in Richmond, consider this one.
I don’t go to Richmond that often, so we decided to make Kirsty ( Eating with Kirby ) take us to the good places in town. She was pretty confident that this place had some good xiao long bao. I am still a big fan of Dinesty, so she really wanted to show me this hole in the wall with amazing XLB. She even wrote a blog post about Dinesty vs Chen’s a few months ago. This place is cash only and has won several awards too. It doesn’t have a nice interior but they are best known for their food. Salted Soy Milk ($2.95) sounds like a weird dish, but it was surprisingly good. It’s also only $2.50! SO cheap! Somehow all the ingredients blended together very nicely to make a savory soup. Mixed Meat Wo Ba was a cool dish to eat. You take some soup and then you throw in a chunk of crispy rice into it. Its a good combination of crispy rice and the smooth saltiness of the soup. Noodle Soup with pickled cabbage and shredded pork ($6.50) was ok. Nothing special. Xiao Long Bao comes in 6 pieces per or

One of my favorite Shanghainese restaurants is Chen’s Shanghai Restaurant, a regular spot in the rotation for my friends and I since the food is very good without punching our wallets in the face. Like quite a few places in Richmond, Chen’s is all about inexpensive, simple and delicious. Actually, it’s in the same strip mall as Happy Date and all the usual comments about the awful parking lot still apply. The decor consists of standard issue Asian restaurant furniture and signs loosely taped to the walls. Clearly, their focus is on the food.
