Hitting The Sauce

I booked L’s birthday dinner at Sushi Hachi Japanese Restaurant. Run by a husband and wife team, Sushi Hachi is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Reservations are required, as the small restaurant is perpetually booked. I invited N and Beep Beep to L’s dinner. N asked if she could bring her new gentleman friend A-OK. When I spoke to the owner to request an extra seat, I confided to the owner that I was excited to dine at his restaurant. He sounded pleased, but cautiously mentioned that he only serves sushi and sashimi. There is no teriyaki or tempura on the menu. I told him that was fine with me, as I’ve been to Japan before and I’m aware of the difference between real sushi and the North American version. He sounded worried and humbly stated that he didn’t want to get my my hopes up, as his sushi is not as good as what you can get in Japan. For this post, let’s listen to “Saw You in a Dream” by The Japanese House.

Hi Friends! I finally did it! Did what you ask? I finally had my first full-on Japanese sushi experience in Vancouver at Sushi Hachi. I had this a lot when I was in Japan but I have never been able to spoil myself with such luxury in Vancouver. We got to Sushi Hachi at 6:30pm in time for our reservation. I’m so glad that he made a reservation because it’s so hard to get a spot at Sushi Hachi and on our way in we saw a sign at the door that said that they were all booked up! I’ve been to Japanese owned sushi spots before like Kazu and Seto but this experience felt completely different.

You know what my comfort food is? Sushi. I've always enjoy watching vloggers try out high-end fine dining level sushi in Japan. Seeing the chef make each individual nigiri or roll (preferably nigiri, as it sounds a bit more classier). Because cretiveiy is something I try to bring in all aspects, I combine the watching of these youtube videos with a casual take-out nigiri combo and pretend that I am feasting on the best the world has to offer. Which never works...

I was looking for a small shushi restaurant and found this jem. I had kanpachi, shimaaji, Hiram, Toro, a spicy roll and BBQ salmon skin salad. All very good but I like the best the toro (tuna belly).
Would recommend you call ahead to make reservation.

Cute family run Japanese eatery that specializes in raw cuts that are super fresh. Prices are steep, and I think that their sushi rice could use a lot of work, it does have the same fragrance as other places. Especially when the sushi is simple I want me some good sushi rice. Not a very diverse menu, not the best place for parties or kids. Service is slow, restaurant is small. Come here if you want a nice place with simple eats.

My favorite sushi restaurant. Kojima San and his wife serve authentic, freshest sushi in town.
They are really particular in keeping their ingredient's quality at the highest. They refuse to serve anything that is lesser than perfect. I admire their professionalism.

Sushi Hachi has been on my wishlist for a very long time, and I finally got to try it. They open only 5 days a week for 3 hours a day, and usually fully booked throughout the weekdays. I was lucky enough to make a reservation on the same day I was planning to visit.

Unagi, Amaebi & Hamachi Nigiri Sushi
Although I am a huge fan of hamachi over anything, Unagi was very impressive than anything else. I started thinking I might have been eating unagi wrong all these years.

Considering its high quality this Chef's Choice Sushi is ridiculously cheap and worth the price. For 10 pieces of nigiri sushi + 1 maki, it's well-priced for $25. I must admit that every piece was amazing, and specifically I was astonished by this tekka maki. I never ordered a maki for myself unless it comes with a combo. Usually it tastes just simple and kind of bland for my liking. But then Sushi Hachi's maki changed my whole perception! Nori itself was very tasty which went very well with the warm rice and delicate, sweet tekka inside. I'd eat 5 orders of this.

Another must-have at Sushi Hachi is Chef's Choice Sashimi ($25). You get a good selection of sashimi with 6+ different kinds. Everything was very fresh, and nicely sliced in good size.

I walked in at about 7:30 pm, there were a lot of people. Luckily I had a reservation. The decoration was simple and traditional, with some Japanese prints on the wall. The only sushi man is efficient but he is the only sushi man! His wife is the server/cashier and she is very apologetic when food comes even a little slow and she is very friendly.

Today all seafood was freshly from Japan- what a treat! First up was the spicy octopus salad. I asked for the spicy sauce on the side (yes, I'm a spice weakling) but the dressing was already so good I didn't need any sauce! The bite sized octopus added a bite to the fresh greens. The miso soup was white miso unlike other Japanese restaurants which serve the darker miso soup.

Then came the BC Roll, unagi nigiri, toro aburi nigiri, and tamago nigiri. The BC roll was delicious! The salmon was not too heavy and there were nice fresh cucumbers inside, but I wish the skin was crispier. But the star of the show was the toro aburi! The tuna belly was buttery and melt-in-your-mouth. The tuna had a nice smooth smoky flavor, but not too overpowering.

The unagi was very flavorful and had a sweet and umami taste. The tamago was sweet, like syrup, but not too sweet. My two friends got the omakase, and it came in two plates, both with 8 pcs each, adding up to 16 pcs, and there is a LOT of sushi. On the first plate, the best response for sushi was the toro nigiri. Like its torched cousin, it melts in your mouth. On the second plate I tried the chopped scallop roll. The sauce was like mayo and the scallop was really soft and delicious.

There was a plate of aburi with the omakase, 2 hamachi, 2 toro, 1 octopus and 1 other sushi I forgot. Then there was MORE omakase, unagi with long tails that droop off the side of the rice...cool! Then and only then was the meal finished.

What a legendary sushi place! Recommended and would come back at any time. Problem is it's a little pricey and very popular meaning you need a RESERVATION! This tiny hidden gem has the best sushi I have had in a long, long time.

We were 5 minutes late for our 6pm reservation, and wasted no time to place our order because we had to be gone before the 7:30pm reservation. They only have 2 rounds of dinner service here because they are only open 6 – 9pm, 5 days a week. The small dining room of Sushi Hachi, barley fitting in 20 seats, was almost fully filled, with a lonely empty spot at the sushi bar with a reservation sign. I felt like waiting for the opening of a sold-out show, thrilled, anxious and nervous, and the anticipation of the entire audience was going through the roof. The show runners were only 2 people, including the Japanese sushi chef and his wife, the only server of the evening who seemed to never stop running. Once a while, the chef ran away his sushi bar and presented his dish on a table by himself.

Without hesitance, we attacked their daily special board. The Shima-aji Sashimi ($18) is a rare find in Vancouver as the supply of striped jack found in the city is imported from Japan. The beautiful metallic overtone on the skin showed how fresh it was. Less fatty but more delicate than Hamachi, it tasted more like Kanpachi, but definitely had a greater flavour. This sashimi dish opened the show beautifully.

The second climax of the evening was Sushi Hachi Chirashi Don  ($25), which is not like any Chrirashi Don I've had before. The presentation was whimsical, with the slices of sashimi lying flat on the dish, spreading out and looking like a gorgeous painting with vibrant colours from Hamachi, Wild Salmon, Red Tuna, Toro, Madai, Aji, Saba, Tako, Ika, and Tamago. And  the sushi rice on the side was perfectly cooked, dressed with Tobiko and seaweed, and quite luscious on its own.  There were 3 of us so we reluctantly used paper, rock, scissors to decide who picked the first piece. Although I lost and didn't get to eat Hamachi, I still find this rice dish awesome.

The best part of the the dinner was Chef's Choice Sushi ($25), with 10 pieces of Nigiri and one Toro Maki. The 10 pieces were visually stunning, showcasing some impeccable sushi chef knife skill by making very single one of them look amazing, and reminding us sushi making is such a sexy form of art. Tonight the chef's choices were Hamachi (yellowtail), Kanpachi (amberjack), Madai (sea bream), Shima-aji (striped jack), Hirame (flounder), Tobiuono (flying fish), Saba (mackerel), Hotate (scallop), Aji (jack makerel), and Marugo (red tuna). Taste wise, let's say I simply ignored the fact that I lost again in Rock, Paper, Scissors. because enjoying any of those 10 pieces in my mouth makes me feel like a winner. And surprisingly the story of this dish continued to wow us when we started eating the Toro Maki ($3.50). It is probably one of the best sushi rolls that I have ever had, and it is so simple. The ratio of the fish, rice and seafood was so perfect that it sends waves and waves of pleasure from the taste and the texture. It is definitely another I-could-almost-hear-the-angels-sing moment. For that we had to order another Toro Maki!!!

A mom and pop Japanese restaurant. Authentic traditional nigiri and sashimi, simple and done right; they also serve hot dishes and daily fresh sheets but very limited. Reservations is highly recommended as they only open in the evenings. Service is slightly slow since the husband and wife runs the place.

STUPENDOUS! the atmosphere is so cozy and cafe-like, unlike other typical loud, rushed restaurants. you can sit down and enjoy the quiet vibe while eating high-quality dishes! the fish are all so fresh, they melt the moment you eat them! you can tell the ingredients are good quality and fresh, and the chef puts lots of effort into making each one. he has lots of talent and it's clear he enjoys preparing such delicacies. you must try their house roll, oysters and chef's choice sashimi!

Amazing sushi. There's no denying that they are sourcing the best fish available and handling it the best way possible. Perfectly made rice and perfect fish/rice ratio. Highly recommended. Not inexpensive but it makes sense when you taste it.

I always drive by this place and have been wanting to check them out for awhile so I finally got us a table for my father's birthday as he's very picky with his Japanese food. It's a very small, husband and wife run restaurant so seats are limited and they are only open from 5-9 (Wed to Sat) so reservations are highly encouraged. The quality to price ratio is incredible. I got the chef's choice sushi combo for $30 which was amazing. Their nigiris are also very fresh and good quality cuts. This place is great to enjoy a nice authentic Japanese dinner but don't expect to get in and out right away if you are in a rush as it's just the 2 of them so relax and enjoy your food and company. Parking is inside Pacific Plaza and they close the gates beside Sushi Hachi by 7pm so you would need to walk around the main entrance. I love supporting small businesses when I can and being walking distance from my place, I would definitely come back again. My only regret was not coming here sooner!

This place has less menu items than other sushi places, but they are really good at basics. Chirashi Don has most of sashimi pieces on the menu and it was a good sampler type of dish. Loved blue fin tuna especially and just a heads up that their house rolls are very big.

I've been here a few times and every time I leave this place really happy. I would say one of the best sushi places I've tried in Richmond, very consistent. I usually order their chef's choice sushi. Service is friendly and food comes out pretty quickly considering it's only one chef making the food. Food is tasty. nice portions and fresh! Highly recommended! I do recommend you call maybe a couple of days in advance to reserve a table before you come, since opening hours are short and most tables are reserved every night. I see many people get turned away when they try to show up without a reservation.
