I bought a raspberry/rhubarb pie there today. It's the BEST pie I've ever eaten. The buttery crust and the sweet yet tart filling made for a dessert that will not soon be forgotten HIGHLY recommend

One of a number of casual eatries that's located near The Drive, Uprisings Bakeries offers a decent selection of pastries and other sweets, as well as various sandwiches, salads and soups for breakfast/lunch options. For my visit, I had their Raspberry Rhubarb Slice and Blueberry Cinnamon Bun (details below). Both were tasty, and the prices were very reasonable. While not outstanding, I think that this is still a solid bakery, and is definitely worth checking out if you're near the area.

Raspberry Rhubarb Slice ($3.10):
4/5
The filling was quite delicous: thick and flavourful, with a great balance between sweet and tart, and bursting with pieces of rhubarb and raspberry seeds. The crust was also perfectly baked, a little more crispy than flaky, and stood up well to the filling.

Blueberry Cinnamon Bun ($2.10):
4/5
The bun was a bit unusual in that it contained blueberries. The berries proved to be a nice addition however, adding both texture and fragrance. The dough itself was soft and chewy. Being both a massive sugarholic and a lover of cream cheese icing, I was a bit disappointed by the relatively scant amount of icing topping the bun. Although they did have some additional icing inside the bun, which paired very well with the jammy blueberries, I still would have liked to have more (I'm crazy for cream cheese icing). Being a "cinnamon" bun, the cinnamon flavour was a bit weak, although I personally wasn't bothered by it.

Oh what a lovely pie. "Oh What a Lovely Pie" is the title of a 1990s record album by a cheeky Aussie punk band named "The Cosmic Psychos." Only it wasn't the kind of pie you get in a bakery that they were singing about. But I kept thinking about that album title as I was eating the huge slice of raspberry rhubarb pie I got at Uprising. Lovely size -- it was 1/4 of a 25-cm diameter pie, and only cost $3.50. Lovely flavour -- totally raspberry, without even a hint of the rhubarb, only I could tell from the tartness that the rhubarb was working as a taste accelerant. Lovely crust -- thick, not dainty, but crisp and not claggy. Even a lovely colour -- hot red, with just a hint of pink. I think the Psychos would have been excited to see that in the pie they were singing about.

Brings People Closer!!. I was talking to a much older woman the other day about the drive and where I used to go to school. We weren't really on good terms and to try and say something nice she managed to talk about this bakery she really liked. and I said oh i love uprising!! and she goes THAT'S the ONE! and we no longer became enemies. Thank You UPRISING! for bringing people together! hahah

Setting out to the Drive - An Experiment. As we set out from Yaletown, were realized that neither one of us really knew how far Commercial Drive really was. Through Chinatown, through neighbourhoods off Pender, across Venables - low and behold, one hour of walking later, stood our destination. To our advantage, right at the corner was our first stop, "Uprising Breads Bakery". Inside, the happy shop-keep brew an espresso for me, and a hot chocolate for my father. Delightful, we sat, ate a chocolate croissant and morning glory muffin (all made on premises) and started writing notes. The bakery itself, bright yellow and red, was a bit of a dump. But the satisfying snack made up for the appearance. At the cashier station, a sign reads, "we use only organically grown fairly traded locally roasted coffee". Amiel, the barista, gave me his top 5 coffee shops on Commercial Drive - I happily accepted!

The Jalapeno Cornbread smelled lovely and was not at all spicy as I thought it might be. The cornbread was buttery, dense and had a lot of whole corns in it. This small little loaf was about $6 but I can guarantee you one slice is filling enough.
