Breka is a popular place for university students to study. The main reason is because it is open 24 hours! During exam time, Breka gets quite packed. I've tried a couple pastries and they were decent!
I am nostalgic about this place and it was my nostalgia that took me there. I used to live in the neighbourhood once. I had a vegetarian pocket and coffee and just savoured the atmosphere. It is open 24 hours and it is a great place if you want to have a conversation, do homework or write something.
We enjoyed our visit at Breka downtown the other day that we decided to try their other location on Fraser and 49th, right in the heart of Punjabi market. This location is a lot smaller and older than the downtown location. Nevertheless, the menu and the baked goods were the same. This was also a busy location since it was in a shopping area and also a bus stop was right outside. So we saw lots of customers waiting for the bus come in to grab a quick dessert.
Breka’s Bakery is a small chain of cafes in Vancouver. Although it is quite popular and has a lot of baked goods and coffee selections, it is almost devoid of hot foods. They do have soups and a few sandwiches, but this place is definitely geared more towards the type of people who drink coffee on an hourly basis.
Location : 49 Metrotown bus to Fraser street
Ambience: Busy busy place with cute decor.
Food : My favourite pick up items are Belgian chocolate mousse(which I always crave for), veggie roll( because it resembles the patties served in India ), of course chocolate donut with sprinkles.
*My sweet tooth gets satisfied only with Breka’s Belgian choc mousse. Stay away from the Mango shake.
Bottom line: Tina RAVES about Breka and we were on a #CakeSearch mission so she brought me to Breka. If you're lactose intolerant, make sure you bring your pills cause there is a lot of dairy-related food here. My cake was decent but I'm not a huge cake fan, to begin with. The service was good and I had no complaints about that. Tina couldn't finish her Dolcé cake but I tried some of it and it was decent, especially the chocolate part.
Seating at this particular Breka is very limited in comparison to the amount of traffic coming in. As I waited in line I was worried I was not going to get a seat. Their desserts look fantastic, absolutely impressive. It would have been lovely to indulge in pieces of cake, pie and/or pastry but my friend had recommended particular foodie treats. I got the goat cheese quiche, apricot jelly donut and ordered a decaf iced caramel macchiato.
The food was great but they made me a hot version of the caramel macchiato and were not thrilled when I mentioned I wanted an iced version. I think they just threw my drink onto ice because it was quite warm when they gave it back to me.
This location is crazy-busy and wow, it is so loud! Mostly because of the traffic. Several times big trucks went by blaring their horn making me jump in my seat. Not a quiet and calm oasis. The food was good, the service was a little disappointing and the limited seating in comparison to the flow of traffic was a tad stress-inducing.
My advice? Either pick up one of those incredible treats to take with you when you leave or come later on when all the other cafes are closed. Take advantage of their location being open 24/7 if you want to get some work done and chat with a friend.
Breka offers a pretty nice assortment of both sweet and savoury goods, most of which are very reasonably priced. On my first visit, I got their popular Red Velvet cake. For variety sake, I decided to get a Dulce de Leche donut. I also had their Beef Sausage roll.
Beef sausage roll: 3/5*; I'm not sure if I'm fair in my review because I had the roll to go, and did not bother to have it heated up. Hence, the outer crust was kind of hard not very enjoyable. I did like the sausage stuffing though; it had a nice flavour and spice.
Dulce de leche donut: 4/5; The donut was a nice size (probably 1.5x the size of one from Tim's). It was soft and fluffy, and had a coating of white chocolate on top that I really enjoyed. My main issue is that there isn't enough dulce de leche filling (which was quite good and had a perfect level of sweetness). There was only a dollop of it in the center, while the edges were all empty. Fortunately, the white chocolate kept the donut from being bland.
Red velvet cake: 5/5; This cake was every bit as good as I had hoped it would be. The cake was nice and moist and the cream cheese frosting had a perfect level of sweetness mixed with some tang. The small pieces of chocolate cake sandwiched in between were a nice touch.
Maybe it's because my palate isn't "refined" enough, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything that I had at Breka's, and I thought that it was every bit as good as the offerings from higher end patisseries, but at a considerably lower price. This is a place that I'll certainly be coming back to many times in the future.
This location is constantly busy from day to night. Personally I say it dies down between 1am to 4am lol. Your gonna see alot of students here studying. Everytime the bus stops at the front you see a heard of people getting inside. Very good buisness here.
The desserts are good. My favorites are the mango cake and pistachio cake. The coffees are decent here. To my surprise if you order a regular cup of Joe, they will do Americano as a standard, cool. I usually grab a double shot with a touch of brown sugar in the morning.
Free WiFi here, parking is limited but it's still not too bad.
