3.6/5, a great / small place for lunch. The daily soup has a high quality taste. I also like the pastry. (why can't I rank 3.5 instead of choose either 3 or 4 on zomato? sad).

Everyone needs a good arsenal of tasty tacos in their back pocket. In the interest of establishing such a thing for myself in Vancouver, we visited the West End’s Molli Cafe. Selected as Best of the Americas 2016 in Vancouver Magazine, they seemed like a safe bet for some authentic Mexican eats.

It’s a teeny tiny place with only a small handful of tables including a little bit of seating outside on the sidewalk. The white subway tile is offset by a few Mexican decor elements, and most notably a beautifully colourful mural that is simply eye-catching. We visited late on a Saturday afternoon and were excited to eat! (It’s good to note that they are only open until 7pm in the evenings.)

We approached the counter and looked over the chalk board menu which mainly featured tacos and tortas, and proceeded to place our order with one of the friendly staff members.

I felt somewhat underwhelmed by the beverage selection. Everything on the menu was very basic “coffee shop” fare and it didn’t seem to match the food all that well. (They claim that their coffee is from Mexico, so I guess that’s a thing.) For example, they have hot chocolate on the menu. Why not make it Mexican hot chocolate and then it would be that much more interesting? As for the cold drinks, there was nothing delicious like horchata in sight. They do offer a few flavours of Jarritos (but not Mexican Cola, the best flavour in my opinion) and a few fruit juices. I went ahead and chose a Pineapple Nectar Jumex... But only because there was nothing better.

I’m a very big fan of the torta, a delicious and giant Mexican sandwich. Dare I say it, I prefer them above tacos in most cases. So I was very excited to see them featured quite heavily here, with four different ones to choose from. Although the tacos sounded pretty good as well, also with four types. I noticed on their website that “lamb consomme is available Saturdays only” and they also show lamb tacos. However, either of these items seemed to be offered at all, at least not anywhere that we could see. And we were there on a Saturday. I went ahead and selected the Pollo Torta (Pulled chicken, cheddar cheese, avocado, tomato, chipolte onions, cilantro, mayo - $9.75). Normally I would lean toward the pork option, however the toppings on the chicken torta sounded way better. After a short wait, our food arrived. My sandwich was served with some pretty sad looking tortilla chips, maybe like five of them. No salsa. Although we were given a bottle of likely homemade spicy chipolte sauce. Thankfully, the torta itself was pretty good. The bread is an incredibly key component, and it was fresh-tasting, crusty and soft, with a bit of chew - exactly the way that it should be. I was most impressed by the massive chunks of juicy chicken! It tasted tender and delicious, and was most certainly abundant. The rest of the toppings worked very well; the cheese added a nice sharpness, the avocado and tomato were fresh and bright, and the stewy, smoky, spicy onions created a lot of flavour. It was a very good messy sandwich, like it should be.

While my sandwich was decent, I felt as if they could have done more. Nothing about my experience really stood out as exceptional. They offer a “soup of the day,” and I do love Mexican soups, so maybe that would be a worthwhile item to try. They didn’t really have very much available for desserts either. They serve breakfast, so I would be interested in going back to try that.

Vancouver has a huge concentration of restaurants, no joke. Even for someone as greedy as me, I can’t eat at every place I want to due to time, money, and mood. It took me being on a staycation before I was finally able to check out Molli Cafe. It’s a cute, small space with friendly service. Recommended if you’re in the area.

A Mexican cafe on Burrard. With pots of cacti and tacos available, it’s not your typical cafe. The staff is friendly, and we ordered a coffee (12oz) $2.25 and I tried a flower tea $2.50. Sheepie ordered a cookie, but it was hard, and not that really good. Now, my tea was fascinating. I had never seen anything like it. When the staff brought over the glass pot with the blue flowers floating in beautiful blue water, it took my breath away. Just mesmerizing blue. When I poured into the white cup – which in itself was uniquely shaped. Love it!

On the outside, Molli Cafe looks like your neighbourhood coffee shop.  In fact, it had taken over the space of the Green Mango Cafe, which served your typical paninis, wraps and sandwiches.  I regularly walked by Molli Cafe and thought that the offerings would more or less be the same.  It wasn’t until I stopped by one day and looked at the menu posted on their window that I realized it was not a regular coffee shop.  In fact, I was quite surprised to learn that they serve Mexican food – tacos, tortas and soups!

I’ve been hoofing it home from work quite a bit these days, and almost every time I did I’d take the Burrard bridge which means I’d pass by Molli Cafe enroute. From the outside, it looks like just as the name suggests, a cafe. What I never realized though is this place is much more than a cafe, they serve almost exclusively Mexican food. I was stopping by to say hi to Grandma’s Boy to borrow his DSLR camera (I’m in love) once again and asked if he wanted to grab dinner. He agreed and spent about 30 seconds searching the interwebs and immediately decided on them, mentioning he’d been wanting to check them out for some time and that they had really good reviews. I didn’t believe him when he said it was a Mexican place so we decided we should go investigate. There was a sandwich board outside mentioning an upcoming Vancouver Foodster taco challenge that was running from May 21st until June 14th to which got me excited for a brief moment, only to realize I was there a day before the challenge began. Blast! Looking at the menu it had all the usual caffeinated beverages, along with a display case of juices and what I’m assuming are Mexican drinks. For foods there were 4 tacos and 4 tortas (beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian variations), a salad, a soup of the day as well as a few breakfast options. Everything had the Spanish equivalent name with the ingredients listed in English below which was helpful, so I can only assume this place was leaning towards the authentic side of things. What’s more, the man working in the kitchen was what I’m assuming to be Mexican and was very friendly, offering suggestions on what to order. I suspect he was the cafe owner as he came by our table after we finished to see how we enjoyed our meal. I do like it when the staff are eager to please, so this was nice to see. Lovely cafe, lovely proprietors, delicious food!. A gem, for sure. A bright, cheerful space with some Mexican decorations that add bright colors in a tasteful way. Totally sweet, helpful, friendly staff. Food is wonderful!

I had delicious soup of the day: pisole (hominy corn) and pork. Charmingly, the clear, very flavorful broth, full of pieces of pork, came with a side plate of shredded lettuce, cilantro, chopped onion, and home-made hot sauce. Add as much or a little of any of it to your soup according to your taste. Fun!
The soup had much richer flavor than soup I have had at way more expensive restaurants.

I also had a soft black bean and fresh cheese taco. Also very delicious. They also make tortas, a sandwich on a fresh roll.

And dessert? Your choice of several types of excellent, simple, freshly-made Mexican pastries. Their spiced Mexican hot chocolate is absolutely magical!

The people running this restaurant really know what they are doing. A pleasant surprise!

Their concha bun is so good. Bread is moist and soft. Perfect amount of sweet balanced with light flavor bread. I like ot a lot, just not a big fan of the chai spice taste. Hope there will be more options of concha.

I'm a major taco head and I've been to most of the taco joints in Vancouver. I visited Molli Cafe yesterday for the first time and it blew my taco head right off. I ordered one of each: cochinita pibil marinated pulled pork, cabbage, pickled onions tinga de pollo chicken, chipotle onions, sour cream, cilantro frijol con queso slow cook black beans, farm style fresh cheese, cilantro papas con chorizo potatoes, home made chorizo, sour cream, cilantro Each one was perfect in every way. The topping were all moist and perfectly seasoned. And the flour tortillas was warm and soft. Just go you won't be disappointed. Unless of course your believe that Taco Bell actually serves tacos!

Delicious! The cochinita pibil torta was great. The torta came on a baguette - not what I'm used to but I liked it. The hotchata and pico de gallo were perfect compliments to the torta.

I ate Barbacoa Tacos here and they are 100% authentic Mexican tacos, I have recommended this place to a lot of people. The only issue is that the place is very small, I went here in a party of 10 people and we had to sit on ledges because there were not enough chairs. The place seems to be very popular, so it might take a while to get the food. The employees are very kind and tried to do the best for us even when we were a lot of people.

Popped in for a bite during the West End Heritage Tour and had the most delicious torta and some kind of juice they make there, sorry I didn't catch what it was called. My brother enjoyed a couple delicious tacos. The staff were lovely. Definitely want to go back soon.
