Can't believe I went so long without knowing this place existed. Aside from the food being delicious, the restaurant itself is very nice, the service is good, and you can see the sushi being made. They accommodated my gluten-free diet so easily, without even a blink of an eye. It's clear they know what they're doing. Great sushi, will be coming again!
EDIT: went again, the tobiko roll is really good! The staff is so warm and friendly (:
We wanted to eat at an authentic Japanese restaurant, and were hoping to try one that we hadn't already tried before. After a bit of searching on Google, my husband chose Uma Sushi . It's a small and quiet restaurant, only about half a block away from the busyness of Cambie St. With a 4.5 star rating on Google, it sounded like a very promising restaurant so we were very much looking forward to this meal.

Ingredients were fresh and everything was nicely prepared; however, given the high ratings this place has received, we were honestly a bit disappointed with this place. While we couldn't really find fault with the food, we just weren't blown away by it either.
Their sushi donuts were visually stunning but when it came to eating them, they tasted quite ordinary and handling them was a bit of a challenge. Just my own personal opinion: Perhaps air frying them into Yaki sushi donuts might have made them easier to handle and given them a bit more flavor as well?
Aburi Sushi was good but we felt that we'd actually had better Aburi elsewhere, at restaurants with lower ratings.
Service: Good
Parking: Paid parking on the street
Location: 450 West 8th Ave., Vancouver
Went on a weekend afternoon and most of the seats were full. The place cleared relatively quickly and there was bar seating available. The menu is accessible via QR code, but physical menus can be provided upon request.
There is a fair amount of variety for each type of food they serve, donburi, appetizers, nigiri and sashimi, combos, and rolls. There are also daily specials on a chalkboard near the front door. The sashimi don, tamanagi roll, and salmon and avocado roll were delivered promptly upon ordering and the presentation was clean and simple.
The sashimi was recently fresh and the texture of each piece was great. The rolls had a fair amount of fish inside and held together when picked up and dipped in soy sauce.
We stayed for about 45 minutes and the staff did not rush anybody out. Would recommend for a casual meal of good quality.
Wow oh wow - the food is just amazing - we had sushi platter + sashimi platter as well as spicy tuna rile and an avocado tuna dish - all were incredible- this place is a hidden jem! I will will back tomorrow
Food portions were bigger than expected. The donburi were very filling
Lots of vegetable options and salads for eating healthy. The staff were so friendly and organized
I recommend
delicately prepared & the takeout containers are pretty! also the first time i don't hate cucumber in a cali roll ♥️
Delightful spot for sushi and Japanese food. I got a seat for one right away at the counter spot. I ordered an assorted chirashi donburi ($18) and it was a great lunch meal. Fish tasted fresh and the rice was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the salmon, tuna, octopus, tamago and inari.
Hidden gem spot for sure! This is the place if you’re looking for something a little more high quality than your usual cheap lunch sushi place. Everything is super fresh. Slightly higher price point, but pretty worth imo. The uni nigiri is bomb
Had a lovely dinner with my sister at Uma Sushi today. She ordered the Himawari donburi with extra cured egg yolk and miso soup, while I had the Shiromi Donburi with extra miso soup.
The donburi was excellent. The fish was very fresh and tasty, you can also feel the sweetness and the texture from the slices. The portion was also great for me.
We also ordered a small plate of Tako Wasabi for appetizer. I highly recommend this dish if you're a fan of raw octopus and wasabi. Uma Sushi's Tako Wasabi was hands down the best I've had in Vancouver so far.
Overall, food was excellent, reasonable price, and the great service.
We're definitely coming back soon!
When I saw a photo of their sushi donut, I wanted try it for lunch. The restaurant was very small, right across from winners, but I have never noticed it before I decided to come here. Today, I ordered the sushi doughnut (salmon on fire), Snow White roll, and air fried prawn tempura for takeout. The sushi rice was perfectly cooked and the ingredients were all very fresh with perfect flavoring. The air fried prawns which I thought would be healthier than the deep fried version, but the batter outside wasn’t light or crispy. It might be just cold by the time I got around to eating it. I might come back to try their other items.
