My grandparents brought me here and it was fantastic! Best batter on the fish and the fried oysters were to die for! Staff was very friendly as well.
My new go-to restaurant for halibut and fries. The very best in Greater Victoria! Huge portions, awesome service and great prices. I highly recommend Naughty Nellie's.
Kind of strange not to sell just chips, I mean money is money, right? I hate Cod fish for fish and chips because the fish is so oily and it is deep fried which is even more oily. Ordered the two piece halibut and chips. The food is very tasty. Little more than I would like to pay, maybe I was feeling poor that day. I would return if I was in the area and wanted more fish and chips.
Best fish and chips ever! Wonderful large portions of fresh halibut, and the fries are excellent. Warm and friendly service too! We are regulars now!
Best fish and chips in town. Whether taking out or eating in this is the most consistently good place in town for fish and chips. Chips are always fresh and not the overcooked burnt variety you will find elsewhere. The fish has a delicious batter and is always fresh cooked to order. We are lucky to have this in our town.
Coupon in newspaper... Honestly the best in town. Very worthwhile to use the halibut dinner coupon in the local newspaper to try this place out. You won't regret it.. lots of chips to share too!
Been going on and off for 10 years. Probably best fish and chips this far from water. Owners are hit and miss on personality and friendliness, but I don't eat in so it's all good.
They do server lots of chips but there's not much taste to them (no salt) and not really crispy, could use a few more minutes in the fryer to be really good and I like vinegar on them so that's flavor.
The fish is kinda greasy but it is crispy, if you let them sit on paper towel for a few minutes before serving (take home) they are really quite good. Decent size fish portions but not cheap. 35.00 for 3 halibut and 1 chip order. Not a regular, don't crave them but go maybe twice or 3 times a year consistently.

At Last: Sigh!. Naughty Nellie’s is the sort of fish and chip shop I’ve been waiting to locate in Victoria for too many years. Being a relocated Brit, I had all but given up on finding an authentic old-style fish and chip shop, when a friend recently asked if I’d tried “Naughty Nellie’s. (NOT to be confused with Nautical Nellie’s.)
Small, warm, cozy and clean, this delightful little shop is tucked away in a strip mall at the northern end of Shelbourne St.
Despite the place being packed, we were seated immediately, albeit a bit too close to the door which when opened as it was often, allowed the evening chill to waft over our table. Nonetheless this was eclipsed by the cheerful warmth of the interior and we considered ourselves fortunate to be seated without reservations at 5:00pm on a Friday evening.
My friend had two pieces of cod and chips and I had one piece of halibut and chips. Both were served promptly with homemade coleslaw, homemade tartar sauce and whole-wheat buns with butter. We dithered over ordering tea as we’ve been disappointed many times in local cafés where we got only lukewarm, weak tea in a pot that dribbled, but we took a leap of faith and ordered a pot for two. Voila! Piping hot tea, no dribbles and milk — without asking. Bliss!
Both orders of fish were cooked perfectly in a light batter to a golden brown. The cod was moist and the halibut as it should be, fresh, moist and flaky and the abundant portion of chips were hot, crisp and — like the fish — greaseless.
The coleslaw could have had more of a bite for my taste and I prefer a creamy slaw but in this instance I’d consider any criticism of the condiment picky because everything else was perfect including the prompt, friendly service.
If you are from out of town and looking for a great fish and chip supper, I strongly suggest you bypass the tourist traps downtown, get on the number 28 bus (confirm this) at Douglas and Fort St. going North along Shelbourne. Tell the bus driver you want off at Naughty Nellie’s. It’s at 4081 Shelbourne St. (about a 20 minute ride )and worth very minute of the trip.
What a joy to enter into a sparkling establishment where the owners know exactly what they are doing and obviously have a deep respect for their clientèle.
For the two of us, our fish and chip suppers cost a very reasonable $26.00 and change. I was surprised to see only one young server on the floor but she took care of her “full house” with ease, in a quiet efficient professional manner. Well done everybody! We’ll be back. PS: Any chance you will get around to putting homemade pie on the menu?
Great fish & chippies! Interesting server- she comes across as any other older individual- a nice curmudgeon with a smiley face! The people who didn't like her must have been having a bad day.
The fish is very tasty and crispy but the fries are meh. No flavour and they give you a ridiculous amount. I'm a heavy eater and we had to waste so many of the fries cause they reheat horribly.
No complaints!. My husband and I have been eating here since they opened many years ago. We love that the fish is cooked well with crispy batter, good portions and not dripping in fat. We usually have the cod dinner but have also had halibut; the difference is the cost. I also know about the rest of the menu (lunch) which is on a large board in the shop. The lunch menu is different due to a high school being nearby. I recommend the wrap (for lunch).They are usually very busy during the 2-hr dinnertime often with lineups. We have also eaten take-out which has a too-large portion of fries but they are still cheaper than other F&Chip shops. You can ask for a smaller portion. You can't order 'only fries' when they are busy. If you don't want a hi-fat meal, don't eat F&C! My husband says their F&Chips are better than in UK.
Best fish and chips in Victoria by far. Unpretentious little restaurant in a shopping mall but the very best halibut and chip in victoria...light batter, chunks of whitening , fresh halibut , crisp chips. Brits know good fish and chips when they see it!

Been ordering take-out from Naughty Nellie's for the past 2 years now. Just this last visit dined-in.
Great for take out, I always enjoy the fish and chips wrapped in lining and newspaper. They do have separate menu for take out and dine in, so it's best to call if you have questions. They do have a website with menu items. Take out is always great, the fish is decently sized, with a good amount of fries to share. Same fare with the tartar sauce and coleslaw. Plenty to go around, great, easy, simple.
Tried the calamari; it was tender, not gummy at all. I got the one-piece cod and chips, which was I thought was a fair price for the size of the size of the fish. For the fries, it was really crispy at dine-in, but of course, it might get slightly softer for those that take out. It doesn't bother me, but for those that like super crispy, just please note.
The dine in experience was good, except space is limited, so you might have to wait for a seat- although service is pretty quick, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue. They do take reservations, but only for groups of over 6 people. Also, just double-check their hours before ordering, as they do close for a little bit in the afternoon.
We come here because of the name, not just fish and chips. The prices are good, food is good, good service and relaxing atmosphere. We ordered cod + halibut meal and 5 shrimps with a piece of snapper. They were very tasty!
It was our first time ordering fish 'n chips from Naughty Nellie's and what a delightful experience it was! The whole family, kids included, beamed about the onion rings. My daughter claimer they were the best onion rings she'd ever had. They were real good. The fish was delicious - done just right with good flavour. The coleslaw was lovely. If there was any slightly negative feelings it was towards the fries - they could have used a little more crisping. That said, the portions were generous so there were fries left over for lunch the next day. I fried them up and honestly, they were better the second day. The fries were awesome after a second frying! We loved our food from Naughty Nellie's and if we're in the neighborhood and have a hankering for fish 'n chips, we'll certainly be stopping by. Recommended.
Last night my friend recommended this place, so I gave it a try. First of all, the food was delicious. I ordered the Cod & Halibut, which was very fresh with crispy crust. The server (probably the owner as well) Jerry was a pretty friendly guy and periodically came around and checked-in with everyone. He also seems to know many customers (so great retention there). The only reason that I would take off one star was because Jerry wasn't emotionally engaged when serving, but that's really minor. Also, this place offers discounts for seniors 65 and over, which is extremely kind! Overall, nice place, will come back for sure.
Always hot and 🍟 fries are crispy. I can't say enough about how great this place is! Portions are large, and eating is better, but also, if you take out your get cod 2 piece dinner for cheap...
I’ve eaten here a few times and the food and service are always consistently great! I’ve had the halibut and cod, and really liked both. Portion sizes are good and they’re always quick. Everyone there is always very friendly and helpful. They get pretty busy too on the weekends which is nice to see!

I had ordered a halibut and cod 2 piece dinner with 2 fried oysters. Excellent meal overall. The halibut unfortunately was a bit overdone as its a bit of a tricky fish to do. However, the cod was very nicely done. The oysters were outstanding and I would gladly order a full meal of this anytime. Large, plump and tender with a light coating, it definitely stood out. The fries were OK, but the Cole slaw seemed to miss a bit of zing. Still, service was friendly and the locals seemed to be enjoying their meals as the place was quite busy throughout.
Absolutely brilliant fish and chips! Beautifully crisp fish, great fries, and luscious mushy peas. Loved that I was able to have ling cod here and the service was super friendly. Huge thumbs up!
Best fish and chips we've had in a while. We had the 2 peice halibut with small fries (small fries were plenty enough for 2 people) fries/chips were cooked to perfection. The halibut was cooked to perfection and lightly battered. We order take out and are in the parking lots since we were on a work trip and had a small dog with us. The tarter sauce was blended perfectly with zesty lemon and dill. Coleslaw was fresh and and just the right amount of dressing. They also had an assortment of drinks so we got a can of coke to go with our lunch. Over all we highly recommend. Staff was super friendly and helpful prices were reasonable. Highly recommend the fish and chips at Nellies!
