To be honest, I didn't have particularly high expectations for this bakery; it looked quite standard from the outside and it certainly doesn't have the same popularity and praise that other nearby locations like Thomas Haas has. The place was relatively small, and offers only a limited selection of desserts (although they do have a fairly decent number of breakfast/lunch items like quiches, sandwiches, scones and muffins). I had their Lemon Tart and Chocolate Success (details below), and was pleasantly surprised to find how good both of the desserts were. Futhermore, their prices were very reasonable. All in all, I was pleased with my experience, and I think that this place definitely deserves more praise.
Lemon Tart ($4.5)
4.5/5
The lemon curd was creamy, tart and bursting with a bright citrus flavour. The meringue on top as fluffy and sweet, almost marshmallow-like. The crust was tender and easy to cut into.
Chocolate Success ($4.65)
4.5/5
This consisted of two thick layers of chocolate mousse sandwiched between two layers of cake and encased in a shell of chocolate. The chocolate mousse was thick, creamy and bittersweet while the cake was incredibly tender and moist. I did find the chocolate shell to be a tad waxy and perhaps not of the highest quality.
The staff are really friendly and the pastries are delicious, I always come here to study because the environment is peaceful and quiet. Great overall french cafe
Last month, a Bastille Day festival that took place at the Yaletown Roundhouse to celebrate the French national holiday. It was a free public event where Vancouverites enjoyed an afternoon of French culture, entertainment and delicious food, of course! There was a “Taste of France” market at the festival where a few of the popular French bakeries in town were selling pastries and viennoiseries. Among them were Faubourg, French Make Baking and Baguette & Co. With the sweet smell of baked goods penetrated the air, I was certainly in the mood for a delicious croissant. The question was which vendor should I go with?
