PICTURE HEAVY REVIEW
Located in the Harbour Centre, this is perfect for people who work in downtown or study in SFU. Everything came out sizzling hot and would be a fantastic lunch or dinner. This is the Ribeye beef. . Coke and lemon drink!. Hainanese chicken, tender, juicy. Great sauce. . Curry beef, generous portion of beef. Creamy coconut milk taste. Comforting.
I tried Teppan Kitchen as I heard others say Pepper Lunch was overpriced and too hyped. I will admit, I think teppan kitchen has better prices and serving sizes too. I loved the idea of the food coming out on a hot sizzling pan and being able to see the meat and food cooked in front of your eyes, it was almost interactive. Who said playing with your food isn't fun? The food itself was great, i enjoyed the flavours and it was definitely filling. I feel like this is as good as it gets considering its food court food, so based off of this I likely would try it again.
Teppan Kitchen has recently decided to expand and open up another location of their very successful eatery at the food court at Harbour Centre downtown. I was invited by Chinesebites to do a tasting of their menu items. Some items were exclusive only to this new location. . We tried nine dishes from their menu and also drank some of their cold drinks offered. My favourite being the red drink with sprite and Rebina mix.

What I ate: Beef Special with Egg and Cheese
From: Teppan Kitchen
Payment type: cash, debit, and credit cards (Two thumbs up)
Preparation wait time: Approx 6 min
Flavour Rating: 4 out of 5
Value Rating: 4 out of 5
Would eat again: Yes!
To make it better: An upgrade to this spectacular dish would be to have different marinated flavoured meats. Bulgogi marinade, spicy garlic marinade, or curry perhaps! (since curry is good for dieting...haha)
Chef's take on it:
I knew I wanted to eat something from Teppan Kitchen when I planned to come by for dinner after work, but it was my first time trying them out and I didn't know what to order. So I asked the cashier for her recommendation and this hot plate of rich, meaty, gooey, out-of-this-world dish. "The Beef Special" came out. (I didn't even bother looking at their menu board)
So, what is so special about it? It has a healthy amount of rice in the middle of the hot plate, your choice of toppings around it (it is beef on mine, but I saw chorizo sausage on someone else's plate), a soy-based sweet and savoury sauce on mine, corn, green onions and depending on what you order, you can get grated Mozzarella and an egg cracked on the hot plate...Sizzle sizzle.
The aroma is buttery, sweet, savoury at the same time, and the tray can get pretty heavy if you ordered a drink as well. And guess what, the drink only cost another $.25...a quarter!
I wait until the plate cools down a bit, and start to dig in. The first thing that goes into my mind is: "WOW...this is really good!" I realize that I love everything about it...the flavour of the beef, the sauce, the gooey-ness, the texture, the amount, and right up to the after taste.
And finally after 3/4 of the way or so through the meal, I realize that the rice that was put first on the hot plate, has now become scorched. That just adds another layer of flavour in my mouth...it's not burnt, but perfectly scorched! It has now transcended into another being altogether. It is almost Godly!!
WOW....
Now, unfortunately from a diner's perspective this dish can be seen from great to mediocre at the same time. Because not everyone loves the richness of the ingredients and the scorched rice. I saw another guest left the scorched rice un-eaten...Duh!! But hey...this blog is about the dish itself, not the various people who are eating it, right?
Overall, I really...really enjoyed the dish. Thank you for recommending and preparing this special meal for me.
Great Job!

I first came to know Teppan Kitchen when I attended the Taste of Aberdeen media event a few months ago. Located within the Aberdeen Food Court, Teppan Kitchen serves Japanese-style, sizzling-plate-teppanyaki meals – that is, food cooked on a hot iron griddle. I thought the item we sampled during the media event was pretty good. When I was at Aberdeen Centre recently, I decided to try another of their dishes to round out my review.
Great place to grab a quick meal at Aberdeen Mall in Richmond. The food comes sizzling hot in a stone plate. The food is delicious here and they are super quick! I also tried their fries here too and is really delicious! We usually go to Aberdeen for a quick meal and teppan kitchen never disappoints. Its delicious and super satisfying.
Our go-to order is the daily special ‘A’ grade beef teppan rice ($8.95 +$0.85 for cheese). The daily special comes with a complimentary miso soup and drink, but Mamallama wanted the 7up Ribena, which I think costed us an extra dollar. I picked up the teppan plate, sizzling hot. I had a few times where the plate wasn’t hot enough. I love the char on my meat, and the slightly burnt crispiness on the rice. If the plate isn’t hot enough, those elements disappear. Baby-Paca and I enjoyed this plate doused in their garlic butter soy sauce. The flavour was buttery and savoury. A little greasy, but we don’t mind it too much. There were plenty of thin beef slices, which were shear and tender. The rice was was topped with scallions and corn nibblets. I love how the corn were like little pockets of juiciness that pop when you bite into them. The cheese was a yummy addition, nicely melted and stringy. The miso soup was pretty standard, I liked that it wasn’t too salty. As for the drink, the Ribena concentrated black currant juice was mixed with 7up with a few slices of lemon. We poked at the lemons to achieve the desired level of sourness. It wasn’t too watered down or sweet.
The prices at Teppan Kichen are decent and so are the portions. The wait time is usually not too long, and I love how they have various sauces put out on the side for customers to abuse. Teppan Kitchen is a pretty good option if you are ever undecided on what to eat at Aberdeen.
We were all looking forward to having this because who doesn’t like mixing up teppans? If you like Pepper Lunch, I suggest you try this one instead because it’s comparable and it’s cheaper than getting it there. I don’t know if it was because we didn’t let it sit in the hot pan long enough (we were just too desperate to try it) but the rice didn’t end up reaching the “chewy” texture stage.
Aberdeen centre’s food court snakes around and allows over 20 different stands to have their own dedicated space. Lots of effort was put into decorating each stall. Each had its name in bold, a menu with photos, and some even a display of items served utilizing accurately portrayed plastic food. Not surprisingly, most of the writing used was Chinese characters, but the coloured photos and the glossy fake food helped to bridge the language gap. I will be covering all 20 of the foodcourt dining options across several posts.
Ordered beef teppan rice - good portion size to fill you up but not as much meat, lots of rice and although it was quite oily, sauces were good as long as you don't overboard and it becomes too much!
