My TripAdvisor review:
A Peruvian restaurant with a French name in Chinatown. Only in Ottawa.
This was my first visit to Petit Peru, but not my last. The food was great--my friend and I split the Ceviche Petit Peru for two, and we started with beef empanadas accompanied by a superb dipping sauce called, ají huacatay. (The two main ingredients are the herb, huacatay, and the ají amarillo chili.) The empanada itself was excellent, with a flaky crust and savoury filling, and it was served piping hot.
Our ceviche (a cold soup served throughout Latin America) contained calamari, shrimp, tilapia, onions, roasted corn, and some other vegetables. There were plantain chips, sweet potatoes, and some fried seafood served on the side, but in the same over-sized martini glass. We washed it all down with some Materva, a yerba mate soft drink.
The service was fast and courteous, and we were informed that every month or so the restaurant prepares an all-you-can-eat ceviche menu. The next is coming up in mid-September. It would be worth a trip downtown, for sure.
Check this place out if you're on the west end of Somerset and not really in the mood for Asian food. (If you're like us, though, you can go across the street to the pho shop for some iced Vietnamese coffee to round off your meal.)
