Excellent! I'm giving a 4.5 star instead of 5.0 because I didn't love my margaritas (yes, I ordered two). The guacamole was excellent and while it's not prepared table side (they prep in the kitchen but finish it in front of you), you couldn't ask for it to be fresher. We also had the crab cake tacos served in the sweet jalapeno sauce. I would go back and have two orders of this and be done. My main course was the chicken enchilada in tomatillo sauce - the portions were huge, I couldn't finish. Our server was kind enough to tell me that the chef loves to prepare that dish because the sauce is the same as the one he learned to make with his father. I love hearing stories like those. I saw their nachos being served to another table and would have to say I'd go back just for those. Service was great, it was quiet (Monday night) but it appeared to me that the other tables there had also been enjoying their experience. I will definitely be back. I wanted to add that the prices are really good too. We drank, had several appetizers and our main courses and barely spent $55 each with GST and tip.
Went here with a few friends, we've all come to an agreement that the food was super delicious.
I like this place for the most part. Great ceviche, it's very similar to anything I've had in Mexico and miles ahead of anywhere I've had ceviche in Calgary. The guacamole they have is great! The rest of the menu items I've tried, were not so good, other than churros for dessert. Drinks, appies and dessert is probably the way to go here. They have an awesome patio in the summer too!
Finally a Mexican restaurant in Calgary that's so tasty and reasonably priced too, just like Mexican food should be! I had the chicken tacos with avocados and feta cheese and they were delicious! The waitstaff were also very pleasant!
The shrimp tacos are the reason to go here! They are ridiculously good. The rest of the menu looks great as well! I had the beef enchiladas with red sauce which were also super delicious, and unlike a lot of Mexican restaurants the rice and beans were flavorful. The guacamole is very close to the authentic ones in Mexico where it's made right in front of you.
We randomly picked this restaurant and I’m glad we did! I definitely recommend the Guacamole de Molcajete ($14), which is prepared fresh at your table. I have never had such delicious guac! For my entrée I had the Enchiladas ($16) with chicken and they were delicious. I love a good soft corn tortilla, and this was great. Service was chipper. I definitely recommend.
I'll be honest was not planing on coming here was going to a different restaurant but was closed & was too hungry to wait. As soon as I walked in I thought I made a mistake the inside looks like a lot of typical garbage Mexican restaurants with masks & sombrero's on the wall but was too hungry to go looking for something else & I am glad I stayed. I ordered the camarones, which is shrimp with sauteed vegetables, garlic potatoes with Mexican rice, & the tortilla soup. The tortilla soup was great comes in a bowl full of broth with chicken, avocado, tortilla chips & feta cheese on the side to add as you please. The soup had some heat to it not blow your head of but hotter than most people would like but I highly recommend. the camarones was also great 6 nice size shrimp & the chipotle sauce was fantastic & the rice had some nice flavor as well. I know it is not authentic Mexican but it was cooked perfectly & everything tasted fantastic will be back.
La Vida Loca - 4 out of 5 stars. This is something that has to be said, it is hard for Mexican people to find good Mexican food either in the US or in Canada (or any other part of the world to be honest).
I remember a few times when I was living in the UK that I tried places which served "Mexican food"; they were only the tex-mex type and wasn't something really out of the ordinary, bland and common stuff. But then I arrived to Calgary, and the first thing one Calgarian told me was "Chilitos" (another Mexican restaurant here in Calgary).
Well, it's been a few years since that happened and let me tell you I thought it was the same kind of food that was served everywhere else, no risk, no passion, no flavor.
After that a new place was open (La Vida Loca) on 17th Av as well. We tried and it was OK. Nothing fancy nor extraordinary.
Me and my wife went Sunday last week and we ordered a Pozole soup, a Tortilla soup and a Queso Fundido (with our respective micheladas of course!) Boy! Oh Boy! what a pleasant surprise.
We knew the Queso fundido was excellent (as usual). It brings you back to your child days when you wanted a really nice dinner and the only your mama had in the kitchen was cheese and bits and pieces of chorizo. We already knew it, what surprised us was the Pozole!
Wow!
And coming from a person which one of its favorite food is actually Pozole. Perhaps I was biased because I hadn't tried it for like 6 or 7 years, but the flavorful bowl, filled with spices and meat and corn, it was just excellent.
Quick mention to the Chicharron de Rib Eye, try it out as well as the Tarasca soup.
If you want to try some of the real Mexican flavors, please go and help yourselves!
Really Good. We stumbled upon this place with friends, and we were glad we did. Really friendly server, and everyone enjoyed their meal. The most amazing guacamole, made fresh at the table. So good.
Awesome Dinner!. I was really impressed with La Vida Loca. The food was authentic and was fresh and very tasty. I will be back.
