Zen Japanese Restaurant

I enjoyed every single bite of the food I had here. The food was wonderful, the ambience was wonderful, the service was wonderful. I’d love to come back here more often if only it weren’t that pricey.

This place is a bit hidden. If it wasn't Dine Out, I never would have trekked out this far. Not the most attractive entrance, you would mistaken it for any other typical Japanese restaurant. But once you got past the front door, the interior gives off a completely different dining experience. 

Having attended Dine Out last night at Bistro Sakana (which was a very underwhelming experience), we were hoping this wasnt just another 'wanna be posh' Japanese restaurant. Have to say, although it lacks the hip and busy vibe of Yaletown/Downtown district, the food is nicely executed. It's no fine dining like Miku but nevertheless, points of a nice ambience, great seating and food is fresh and a decently portioned.

Appetizers of fried lobster roll, a generous plating of coleslaw mixture wrapped in rice wrapper, topped with a lobster tempura and occupied by a mayo mixture. Plating was kind of funny...kind of like Tic Tac Toe XD.

Other appetizer of fried scallop and crab cake (4 pcs total) was plated with diced beets, cucumbers and bit of micro greens. I thought the amount of mayo mixture underneath was ridiciously overwhelming..but my brother managed to scoffed most of it down.

Entree was 9 pc nigiri sushi, very fresh and presented beautifully. The fish was not paper thin but reasonable in thickness. This is priced at $29 on their menu so this would be worthwhile to try rather than ala carte. The other entree, miso sea bass, had "wok hey"...a nice smokiness to the overall fish and underlaying bed of asian vegetables.

The dessert, warm brownie with ice cream or matcha tart, both equally delicious and very simply executed and not too sweet..the brownie was melt in your mouth texture...only criticism was both desserts lacked embellisments.

Besides the great food with generous portions, the service was great even with full house. The waitresses were all brisk with service but very courteous. 

We actually can't wait for summer to roll in so we can try this place...the ceiling to floor windows and patio seating is definitely a plus. But we will be coming back way before summer hits.

You are definitely paying a premium for food here. Don't bother trying the normal menu, as you are just paying a premium for items that you can get anywhere else. Very creative rolls, with the Speckled Scallop Roll being especially delicious.
