The menu at Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian declares, " Eat Right. For the love of our animal friends and for our beautiful planet." Very nice! We arrived Sunday morning for the dim sum menu although they offer a full menu of vegetarian delights. We started with the familiar Deep Fried Taro Dumplings. This was crispy and hot on arrival and had a savoury filling of what I assume included mushrooms and bamboo shoots among other things. I always believe that when vegetarian restaurants offer some deep-fried dishes they will be able to reach my heart. The Pumpkin Congee was chock full of tasty Kombucha squash. Rich and comforting, this dish would not have profited from meat. Definitely at the creative end of the scale, was Mango Green Tea Mini Pancake. Halfway between rice roll and dessert, this pancake being almost tortilla-like while the filling was cold and sweet. Definitely, something we would order again and just a bit off the beaten path. Also in the rice roll area, were the Red Rice Rolls. other than the obvious (being red) this came close to the rice rolls we are used to. Again, they had a mixed filling but must have included some Chinese donut as they had some crunch. The Xia Long Baos were a bit of a miss as far as purists might be concerned. They were tasty and I would try them again but the soup had completely leaked out by the time they reached us. I think the problem might have been with the dough as they were quite sticky and were difficult to get off the paper in the steamer. Still, they were texturally and even in the thickness of the dough, decent enough. Just no soup! Another deep-fried dish was Deep-Fried Bean Curb Skin stuffed with Burdock. Served with vinegar on the side, these again fulfilled our fatty, crunchy cravings. Finally was another near-miss with Siu Mai. Listed on the menu as corn and oatmeal, for some reason, I was expecting a different texture but they were definitely of an oatmeal texture. Not bad just not something I would order again. All in all, it was nice to know that this Chinese custom is available for the vegetarian community. The back corridor has a few pictures of well-known vegetarians and their sentiments that should give us pause to reflect. The foodie community needs to come out more to promote this healthy, earth-friendly and humane style of eating. Meatless Monday just seems a little weak these days. I will be the first to admit that it is not easy but seems more and more the right choice to make.
Best to go in bigger groups .. some of the dishes come in big quantity and are totally worth it.....
O was in town so I suggested we check out a dim sum place that specializes in vegetarian food, Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant. They’re sister restaurants to Po Kong (which is directly across the street from them). We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 12:15pm) and it was busy. Luckily, we were able to get a table right away but if you’re a bigger group, make a reservation. The inside is typical Chinese fashion. Service is standard too.
We have come here for dim sum and dinner, with both meals being very yummy! All the dim sum staples were very good, service was excellent and the prices are fair. We would recommend and have returned!
DISCLAIMER: I grew up eating Chinese food and my mom's wonton soup, so Chinese food is comparatively mundane for me. If it's a delicious novelty for you, then you might want to rate this restaurant higher. NOTE: This is a vegetarian Chinese restaurant that uses meat substitutes. Part of my positive tilt on how I rate them is in the quality of the fakeness of the meat.
Come here for boyfriend birthday. He loves to try vegetarian food. This location was in trouvé by one of his colleague.
Two of us tried 4 dishes.... yes... we ate a lot. Very very hot wonton, cold plate combination two, bean curd skin roll and veggie ball mushroom with black pepper sauce .....plus tapioca taro sweet soup.
Veggie ball may not sound very tempting. But when you know it is trying to mimic chicken texture, you would be amazed.
I want to try their 'pork belly' which is made from taro. It looks just like the Chinese BBQ pork belly. Will go back and try other dishes for sure! ( and remember to take pictures next time when I visit again.)
Sun Bo Kong is an award-winning vegetarian restaurant for Chinese cuisine. They are open 7 days a week from 11 am to 9 pm. Reservations are also available. I came here for lunch to try Chinese vegetarian food. A nice change to eating a meal without meat. Gluten Combination comes with a 4 flavours on a plate with different sauces. The gluten is spongey kinda like tofu. A good starter to the meal and easily can be shared.
Immaculate service and delicious food. We came for my sister's birthday. As we came in they greet us all smiles. We then got seated and ordered food within 5 minutes. The first dish arrived within 3 minutes and our entire order arrived with 10. We found an object in the soup and they dealt with this immediately by offering to remake the dish. We asked for deep fried milk, and got 6 pieces of the milk thing and 6 of the deep fried taro. This was unexpected and were delighted by the gesture. Some favourites of the night were the deep fried milk thing and taro, the bean sprouts, and the fried tofu in sauce. I highly recommend trying Sun Bo Kong!
Came here for a delicious meat free dim sum with my relatives. I was so impressed with the quality and taste of the ingredients and didn’t feel like not eating meat was an issue. Dim Sum here is like eating dim sum at a regular restaurant, most of the dishes mirror their meat counterparts.
It was just the two of us, but we wanted some variety. We ordered two dinner combos and a small soup. Food was very tasty and there was enough for leftovers. Service was friendly and fast. Perfect when you just don't feel like meat for dinner.
