The last time I came here was probably 9 years ago, nothing has changed! While writing this review, I found out that The Patty Shop has been open for 40+ years, since 1979!
This is a small take-out shop that serves several varieties of Jamaican patties, as well as rotis. You can buy patties either freshly made or frozen, which come by a dozen. I've tried their Pizza, Hot Beef and Curry Beef patty and a Chicken Roti. The patties had a great crust, and a good filling ratio; my favourite flavour is their Curry Beef. I also really enjoyed their roti. My one wish is that they could place a few chairs or a bench outside their shop; currently there is nowhere to sit so you'd have to take your food to go (I ended up eating everything standing up). All in all, I really enjoyed the food here; this is a place that's definitely worth visiting. Be warned; they are cash only, so make sure that you have some money on you.
Pizza Patty ($2.44):
3.5/5
This is served hot on Wednesdays; you can get their frozen version on regular days. The outer layer is very light and flaky. The interior is filled with tomato sauce and what appears to be pieces of ham/pepperoni. Although I was initially worried about the patty being a bit too thin and not having enough filling, the ratio was actually quite perfect for the crust.
Hot Beef Patty ($2.34):
3.5/5
This was similar to the pizza patty, but was filled with ground beef. The beef was very savoury and juicy. I personally didn't find it to be very spicy: it just had enough heat to provide a slight kick.
Curry Beef Patty ($2.34):
4/5
This was similar to the aforementioned patties, except that it was filled with curried yellow beef. The curry was very fragrant and savoury, with just a slight bit of heat. This was easily my favourite of the varieties that I've tried.
Chicken Roti ($9.50):
4/5
This consisted of curried chicken and potato wrapped in a roti. The roti is soft and tender, with a slightly chewy texture. The curry was similar to that of the filling in the beef patty. I was quite impressed by their chicken: they actually have some very large chunks of meat inside, which was also very tender, well-seasoned and flavourful.
Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 4/5
Service: N/A
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Curry Beef Patty, Chicken Roti
Simply amazing each time. They need more locations. Cheap and filling at the same time. The chicken option is more of a curry like and my go to option. Other chicken options would be good too.
Oh man, how can you not like this place?
$7.70 for a hot beef, curry beef, and a chicken. Fresh and hot in a paper bag. First time here, but I will come back often.
Having moved from Toronto, we had some MAD cravings for some beef patties and chicken roti. Thank goodness we found the Patty Shop! It's a bit out of our way, so we are lucky they have bags of the frozen patties available, $22/dozen. Its CASH ONLY.
A couple of weeks back, my sister insisted that we should go try some Jamaican patties at The Patty Shop located in the Arbutus area. Since it was our first time trying Jamaican food, I was pretty ecstatic about trying something new that was beyond my culture. My opinions here would be based solely on my experience as a first timer. I honestly did not expect this place to be so far from where I live and I imagined this place to be a sit and dine café, but I was far off from it. It is a tiny shop where you do take outs and buy frozen packa
Glad i finally tried this!. This place has been on my radar for a while now and today is the day i finally got to try a couple of patties!
I tried 2, the mild beef, and the mild chicken. Both were fantastic! The pastry was great, crisp and flakey. The perfect vessel for the filling in my opinion. The filling was piping hot and not short on flavor or seasoning.
To be perfectly honest i am not familiar with Jamaican food or seasoning, but i do know that i really like the patties they produce here. The only other experience i have with jamacian patties is with patty king back east. That is my benchmark (i know, not much of a benchmark) so if you can think of others for me to try, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Happy eating everyone!
Be careful with the menu!. I've tried their pizza and taco which are wed&thur specials. They are not the pizza and taco you have in your mind... they are actually pizza toppings and taco fillings in a patty. pizza is filled with sausage. It's good but hot beef is better. they also have roti. I've only tried the veggie one and it was delicious!
I'm addicted to these parties! AMAZING! Totally recommended, be warned, you'll also become addicted to these amazing patties! :)
Patties!. We were introduced to this little shop by a friend and decided to stop by and grab some for a try. We went for the mild beef...since we don't know how hot it is. We don't know how 'authentic' Jamaican patties are supposed to taste, but these ones were super delicious and tasty. Flaky crust with a nice beefy filling - seasoned with some tasty spices. They have a nice level of spiciness to it. For me, I still have to have a glass of water beside me when eating them though. A few times we bought a bag of a dozen frozen patties. Very convenient -- just shove it in the toaster oven -- comes out hot and tasty. This place has got one of the best patties we've had.
