This is a small cafe located next to Liberty Bakery that I'd have easily missed if I hadn't discovered it on Yelp. I've sampled their Olive Oil and Orange Cake and Almond Croissant Bread Pudding. I'm seriously surprised by how good both desserts were. The staff were also quite friendly, and the prices were reasonable. I'd highly recommend people to check this place out. They do jazz up some of their desserts with accompaniments like whipped cream and sauce, so it's probably better to have their food at the cafe (instead of takeaway) if possible.
Olive Oil & Orange Cake ($5.25)
4/5*
*The cake was meant to be served with whipped cream and lemon curd, but because I had it to-go, I had to forgo the accompaniments. Even without them however, the cake was still delicious. It was incredibly moist and tender, and had a great fragrance from the citrus. I do wish that they did not include the rosemary garnish: I made the mistake of tasting one and it was very bitter and unpleasant.
Almond Croissant Bread Pudding ($5)
4/5
This is actually the first bread pudding that I really enjoyed. It was very moist, with a nice butteriness from the croissant. It was coated in a layer of caramel/toffee sauce, that provided a great sweetness and flavour. The toasted almonds on top lent a really nice fragrance as well as texture.
So. This is the deal. Every time I visit Main street, I was take a peak inside Coco et Olive in hopes that I would find that AMAZING chocolate cake I had there oh so long ago in 2012. It was THE chocolate cake and I would rave to everyone about how good it was. More importantly it was also Flourless, so it was kinda of guilt free (cough cough not really).
.Years ago, there was a sweet little Parisan style café tucked into a quiet block in Kitsilano. Nothing short of a Vancouverite’s dream: good coffee, superb food and a lovely ambience. It was Mike’s favourite place for coffee. The owners – originally from Paris – got used to seeing him and two of his co-workers show up in their suits a few times a week for an afternoon coffee break. It was a popular place: madness at lunch. But when the clock’s hand slumped past one, this café was a peaceful oasis, and really, the only place they wanted to be. That’s where their stomachs led them. Some things changed over the years. Mike no longer works in Kits. And that petite café closed; the vacant building has since transformed into a yoga studio. But we’re happy to learn that coffee shop has reincarnated to hipsterville in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. At Stop 32 in our Search for Vancouver’s Best Coffee, we’re here to check out the rebirth of Coco et Olive.
